i brought this up a while back but i can't find the post due to my old nation being Gone so i am just opening a new thread to ask about this because i don't remember anyone telling me details anyway. is there any possibility of allowing emojis and other non-BMP values in forum text in the near future? i've been getting just more and more frustrated with the lack of emoji support as i try to write longer-form and more constructive posts and it would just be great if we could add support for those because the forum smilies suck.

an alternative if the database cannot be converted without serious downtime: could we replace the dated, ugly smilies with a fuller set of plaintext-aliased emoticons based on twemoji, like on discord? i have to imagine phpbb allows for customization of which smilies exist, what image they use, and how they're aliased, right?

there's not enough of them. in the span of today i have wanted to use U+1F62D, U+1F5E3, and U+1F440, none of which have an analogue in the current smiley set. the current smileys also look extremely ugly in my opinion. but ideally we would have database support for emoji which could coexist alongside smileys so people who like the ugly ones can stay happy and so can i and other emoji preferrers

I would agree with the idea for more emojis. But I don’t think we should replace the style/look of them

I would agree with the idea for more emojis. But I don’t think we should replace the style/look of them

again, i'm proposing as the primary option support for unicode emoji codepoints alongside the current suite of ascii-aliased smileys. im only suggesting a stylistic change to twemoji if that is not technically feasible

old things are not always better. they clearly aren't good as they are since i have had multiple issues finding a graphical expression. i don't care what the spelling is. and you clearly don't talk to a lot of people online, especially women, outside of nationstates and reddit if you think nobody uses emojis.

literally the change i'm proposing should affect you in no way, all it would do is make it easier for people used to the modern web experience to use this site.

there have been serious proposed changes around here. they're considering migrating to new forum software. how about we wait for technical to actually chime in instead of making assumptions?

How do you even find up to date forum software that doesn't support emoji? They're more then a decade old!

I remember reading somewhere the new forum will be custom written, rather than an off the shelf forum software. Which makes sense as it'd be easier to properly integrate with NS.

are you the one writing the software? do you genuinely think it will be that difficult to include full UTF-8 (or UTF-16, or UTF-32) support in the sql database for new posts? because on the sql administration software i've used it's literally something you can select from a drop-down. unless you're anticipating that the new web software will be written in assembly or sysv-era c and use a non-sql database design.

can i ask, do you know what utf-8 is? or the supplementary multilingual plane? or anything about text encoding at all? it doesn't even seem like you understand the question i asked, much less the concepts necessary to properly address it or discuss your technical opinions on the matter, so why do you think it's your place to comment?

Is it relevant to this specific conversation? Are you asking in good faith, or are you asking just to score points and jump to conclusions?

Nevertheless, it may surprise you that I do know what UTF-8 is; a character encoding format.
