Regarding New Flags

Postby Afsharid Persia » Thu Oct 21, 2021 12:11 am

I see the new default flags for each country are now SVG files and are much bigger than before. However, this has led to an issue where listing nations with flags in a factbook will show different sized flags next to the nation name in factbooks. This is very inconsistent, compared to before where all the flags in the factbooks would be resized to be the same size.

On a side note, the default flag for Iran is incorrect. I'd like to kindly request the developers to fix these issues at their earliest convenience.

I actually wanted to answer the question about the Afghan flag: unlike all the previous flag changes, changing the Afghan flag to the Taliban design could be very controversial — not only on the background of all the atrocities they committed in recent years — but also because countries like Canada designate the Taliban as a terrorist organisation.

Also, the old Islamic Republic has currently more international recognition than the new Islamic Emirate.

I've noticed that there are two China (PRC) flags listed in separate categories ('China' and the 'People's Republic of China').

There are actually three flags with ‘China’ in the name:

- ‘Republic of China’.

'Republic of China' nowadays is the effectively-separate nation more commonly known by westerners as 'Taiwan' (although the 'Republic of China' name had also applied to mainland China in the stage from the fall of the Ch'ing [or 'Manchu'] emperors until the Maoist takeover, during all but the last 2 or so years of of which Taiwan was actually controlled by the Japanese empire instead)

Here is an example factbook. For example, take a look at Qatar or Timor Leste. The size of the flag is much bigger and inconsistent with the rest

Regarding the default Iranian Flag

Postby Afsharid Persia » Thu Oct 21, 2021 1:19 pm

Also, to clarify, the default Iranian flag itself isn't actually incorrect, it's the crest in the middle that is. It seems like there was some accidentally overlapping or something when saving the SVG file that has made it incorrect. The actual flag can be seen with a quick Google search so the admins can compare and see the difference, it's quite an eyesore if you know what the flag is supposed to look like.

Yes, but I was specifically referring to 'China'' the country that we all recognise to a degree, but given that it may not have been noticed when they setting up the system for the flags. It is best to categorise it as 'People's Republic of China' to avoid this unnecessary debate. :D

But yeah, from what I've seen, there are two 'PRC' flags in the list. As for the flag of Chinese Taipei or 'Taibei' (Republic of China) - that itself is perfectly fine, since it is inherently an issue with duplication of flags, not the pretitle across Taiwan strait. I'll check if there are any mistakes with the list.

With the flag of 'Afghanistan', do we just add new flag under the label as 'Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan' and the Republic being labelled as 'Islamic Republic of Afghanistan', or does this not matter much, since the former Islamic Republic only controls pockets of small villages/terrian of questionable places of origin? But then... it 's like asking for other groups to be added on...?

Why do we have Spanish state flags but not American or (more pertinently) Australian - or any other country's, for that matter?

A player who provided improved versions of the game-listed flags, some years ago by now, was Spanish and chose to add those regional flags to the older selection in the process. Because they'd done such a nice job on the others somebody in the game's management chose to accept these additions. I can't remember their nation's name, but they were Commended by the SC for this work.

So, since the thread seems to have gone off topic a bit, I wanted to clear up two things:

1. Are moderators now aware of the flag sizing issue in factbooks and will it be addressed?

2. Are moderators now aware of the incorrect Iranian flag and will it be fixed?

I guess the rest of the concerns in the thread are also worth having a look at by the moderators as well, now that they have been brought to light.

Hi [Violet],

Are the moderators by chance aware of the 'China' and the 'People's Republic of China' duplication of flags as I've mentioned earlier?

Just wanted to make sure that we're on the right page!

Thanks.

These should be fixed now. If you still see the old version, try a browser restart or refresh.

Yes, the "China" entry is a shortcut to the "People's Republic of China" image. If I remember right, it was added because people would go looking for China under "C" and think it was missing.

I've added a new shortcut for Taiwan too, since it's not very well known as "Republic of China."

Thanks! Looks like it's been fixed for the most part, but there is still some slight difference in the flag sizes, not really sure if it's a bug though, could be more due to the actual flag shapes (compare Benin and Qatar for example in the dispatch linked below)

I believe that's the same situation as before, unrelated to SVG flags. It arises because flags have different dimensions, so one of these things has to happen:
  1. Some flags display taller than others
  2. Some flags display wider than others
  3. Some flags have whitespace padding around them
  4. Some flags have broken aspect ratios
We chose to do a bit of #1 and #2. I've tweaked the styling so that #1 happens a bit more often instead of #2.
