Background
Turanda and Lajastine are neighboring countries on the continent of Meillur, mostly separated by the Bay of Bendas, a narrow inlet of the Southern Sea, though sharing a border in the south and the far north. Both largely grasslands and savanahs, they are both fairly small countries. Lajestine, the larger in both size and population is gone to over one million citizens, the more mountainous Turanda just 700,000. Lajastine is predominantly comprised of the Lajaz ethnic group with numerous nomadic peoples, while Turanda is nearly divided between the Lajaz and Jinsi ethnic groups, with the latter holding a slight majority. Turanda is predominately Christian while Lajastine is predominately Muslim. But till recently, despite these many differences, they lived peacefully alongside one another.
The Turandan Republic gained its independence, unifying under Christian Jinsi Danladi Obasey in spring of 2132. His dictatorial tenure as the 1st State Counsellor however was brief following his arrest of Muslim Lajaz General Abderrahman Al-Aziz, which sparked revenge in Al-Aziz’s brother and son, Zarif and Dulamah. They struck back with the devastating Independence Square Bombing, assassinating Obasey, killing twelve others and injuring hundreds. Zarif fled to the harsh arid southern countryside of Turanda, founding the rebel group, the Lajaz Freedom Fighters (LFF). Dulamah meanwhile feels to the Lajastinean Embassy in Bendas, capital of Turanda. Here he was give refuge. The refusal to hand Dulamah over to Turandan authorities by the Lajastinean diplomatic mission sparked a month long crisis.
The Sultan of Lajastine issued an official denouncement of the Turandan Government following the passage of law legalizing of same-sex marriage, escalating the crisis. Turanda in response severed all diplomatic ties, further escalating the crisis. That crisis came to a grim end when Turandan forces assaulted the Lajastinean chancery and captured Dulamah. This spark a panic amongst expats living in both countries and a flight of foreigners and increase of sanctions. In Lajastine the assault on the embassy building was called an act of war, and in Turanda, the 2nd State Counsellor, Fayola Obasey ordered the execution of Dulamah Al-Aziz and the preemptive invasion of Lajastine.
