Opening Ceremony

As the spectators filled the brand new stadium to the sound of bass vibrating from the sound system, the excitment could be felt in the air. Each guest was given a glow stick as they entered, in typical Saint-Augustine fashion, this was going to be one big party. Once the stadium had been completely filled with people, the flood lights switched off, revealing a sea of glowing sticks that covered the entire venue. The crowd began to whistle and cheer, waving their lights to the music. The stage was set for singers and musicians to play. But before any performers came out, a projection of Princess Stéphanie's opening message was played. The brief message was met with claps, cheers, and whistles from the 75,000 strong crowd.

Soon after, native Sawyer dancers came out and performed an ancient version of the haka to introduce some of Saint-Auguste's most famous singers as they then performed their hit records. Various balloon cannons and confetti where blasted into the crowds. After the performances had finished, it was time for the competing nation's teams to enter the stadium and perform the "Parade of Nations". Saint-Augustine athletes entered the stadium first, each holding a large Saint-Augustine flag, donning the navy and gold uniforms. Fireworks popped above the stadium in the colours of each nation as they entered. Once all the athletes made a lap of the stadium, they finally came to the centre. Fire dancers then formed a large circle around the track, jumping around and throwing fire into the air in a wild display. It was time for the beacon to be lit!

None other than Prince Pierre himself had the honour of lighting the beacon. Prince Pierre himself is an excellent sailing athlete, and will be competing in the games with the Saint-Augustine sailing team. He proudly took the torch and lit a tall sprial tower to spread the flame up to the top, which was in the shape of a leopard's head. The fire burst out of the leopard's mouth. The crowd roared. The games had officially begun! After the ceremony was completed, serval after-parties commenced across the city, most notably the VIP after-party held by the Royal Docklands in which the royal family attended and elites from around the world, and their friends, were invited. It began with a song from Saint-Auguste's top artist at the indoor venue, before everyone heading out to their yachts, mingling, dancing, and drinking the night away.

“Me too honey, me too. When were we flying out Noah again?”

“On the 4th day, his brother is playing in the rugby match. He’ll only stay for one day although he said he might fly back out for the closing ceremony.”

“Right now I am most excited for the Saint-Augustine wines we’ll be drinking when we arrive.”

“I’d much rather see what shenanigans Caane will get up to! By God, he might start an international incident.”

“Hello athletes of our glorious kingdom! I am sure you’re all excited to represent our nation on the international stage. We’re coming to show the CWS who’s the best at these summer sports.”

Willem was wearing a tracksuit as opposed to his usual three-piece. Being allowed to wear comfy sports clothing had always been one of Willem’s favourite aspects of the games."

“Now we’ve got quite the flight ahead of us so I’ll let the captain tell you how the flying goes.

Willem started moving to his seat before quickly realising he had forgotten to say something.

"When the usual instructions are done a video will start playing on those screens in the chair in front of you of our Queen who will give you some rousing words.”

Wilhelmina sat comfortably on her stadium chair as she looked at the wonderful displays of Saint-Augustine culture. Besides some of the Batavian staff making snarky remarks on the French language, as was common in Batavia, most people seemed to thoroughly enjoy the spectacle.

As the Batavian team walked onto the field, it had been Noah’s brother Sepp, captain of the Rugby team, who was holding the flag. Other athletes were walking right behind him in an orderly fashion, all holding up their arm to do the ‘Olympic greeting’ as they walked past Princess Stéphanie. They were excited to represent their people.

Adalwolf Brauer, like the Kherkovians that surrounded him, sat bemused at the spectacle of the opening ceremony that unfolded before them. He held a glowstick in his left hand, and a Kherkovian flag in his right. While the scale of the event was perhaps comparable to sporting events back east, the Saint-Augustine way struck him as slightly… gauche. Surveying the Kherkovian contingent carefully, Brauer was able to tell that they were largely feeling the same. They clutched their flags eagerly, however, excited for the chance to support their nation in a foreign land. Adalbert checked his Volkstelekom smartphone – it was late, and he had work to complete back at the hotel this evening after the day’s events.

The Kherkovians present did not fit the traditional definition of ‘tourist’. Foreign travel was almost completely banned for Kherkovian citizens. Business purposes were one exception, but even then, movement, activities, almost everything was extremely heavily monitored. Travel to occasions like the Summer Games was organised completely at the behest of the Imperial Government, who would purchase tickets, coordinate travel, arrange hotels, food, refreshments, entertainment… the list was endless. The tickets would then be distributed to Imperial subjects that had performed a particular amount of service for the Fatherland, and displayed an extensive devotion to the Kaiser. Most of this year’s attendants were veterans from the conflict in Kemaria, but professions ranged from doctors to construction workers. And, even then, they were chaperoned around like cattle by Imperial ‘Wardens’, as well as various support and security staff.

“Water, Heinrich?” came a voice to Adalwolf’s right. Turning, he found his neighbour smiling and offering a water bottle. “The Wardens have just given these out.”

“Ah - thank you, comrade. The heat here is stifling indeed.” Adalwolf smiled in return, accepting the bottle and taking a drink.

The man to his right was Guntram Waltz, sat next to his wife Ilse Waltz. Guntram was a sailor in the merchant marine, who had been awarded two tickets due to his heroic actions in fending off CLF terrorists from attacking his ship earlier in the year. He lived in number 14 Opel Street, Lenzsteig. It was a small town just outside of Gatten, the city where his ship was based. It was a quaint, good town, with zero arrests for suspected insurgency for eight years running. Guntram had volunteered time and time again to help organise the celebrations for his town’s various Zohlburg 1500 events this year. The pair had four children – Bernd, Lotte, Elias, and Elisabeth, from eldest to youngest - who had been left in the care of Ilse’s elderly parents – Dieter and Karla Weber – while the couple were away in Saint-Auguste.

“No problem, comrade. It’s a strange land, this one.” Guntram continued, speaking loudly to be heard over the music. “Exactly as I learned about it in school. Thank God and the Kaiser for the Wardens!” He waved in thanks to the Imperial official that was leading their group. “I’d be quite lost without them.”

“Always getting lost, this one,” chirped Ilse, “on the sea, fine, but on land, it’s a different story entirely. That’s what you get with these sailor types who were assigned Navy in Imperial Service!”

“I apologise, Heinrich, she’s always calling me out!”

The pair laughed at their small talk, and Adalbert smiled. Of course, Guntram and Ilse had not parted with any information of their home life to Adalbert, nor was it common knowledge. Adalbert knew all of this because of his job. If Guntram or Ilse were to display behaviour unbecoming of a Kherkovian, they would be marked for re-education. If their mind became fully infested with heathen thoughts, they may have to be disposed of. And, God forbid, if the devil took control of them and they attempted to flee, their property and families would have to be seized to ensure they returned to the Kaiser’s light. Adalbert was not a doctor, construction worker, or sailor – he was an embedded agent of the secret police wing of the Reichsvolksmilitärpolizei, the RVMP. But here, he was Heinrich Ziegler, an Imperial clerk from the Kriegerburg in Gratberg.

“Hey, look, there – that’s us! Gott mit uns!” Guntram and Ilse leapt up from their seats, erupting into cheers along with the rest of the Kherkovians. Imperial flags flooded the stadium section that they were occupying, waved frantically in the air at the sight of the entrance of the Kherkovian athletes. Dressed in black and white, each carrying a large Imperial flag that matched the striking white sun of their outfits, they waved to the crowd, whilst at the same time keeping an orderly formation. It was an impressive sight, reasoned Adalbert, as he joined in with the flag-waving and patriotic chants. So far, the group seemed adequate. Perhaps Row F, Seat 101 occupant – Luka Fischer – could be waving his flag more enthusiastically. Adalbert would be sure to mark him for closer observation in his evening work – a complete consolidation of the day’s events for his assigned section of Imperial subjects. As the Kherkovian athletes took their place, Adalbert sat down again. It was going to be a challenging two weeks. But Adalbert knew it was his duty. The Fatherland had granted him so much, Adalbert knew he had to protect it. And challenging doesn’t preclude amusement, he thought. Adalbert had enjoyed his capture of a couple that had attempted dissent in the last Albionian Championship – and he became a hero in the office when no one else could get them to talk, but he could.

He leant over to Guntram and Ilse. Smiling, he shouted to them. “Let the games begin!”

Ahmed, head of The Demesetelian Summer Games Committee, sat in front of his laptop idly clicking through various athlete health reports. He had taken accommodation in the Summer Games village to try to better connect with the athletes, but was currently regretting his decision as the raucous of the village filled his room. Standing to close his door, Ahmed could tell many of the athletes did not feel the disappointment or stress he currently did. In fact, as he observed a speedo-clad swimmer with a giggling Saint Auguste girl on each arm pass his room, he for a moment felt a flash of...anger? Resentment? towards the athletes. Quickly pushing it away, he forced himself to remember that they were the ones going out to prove their worth on the world stage, and he was just the egghead trying to keep it all together. With the noise reduced to a dull roar, he returned to his desk to go over his schedule for the next few days.

The muted television on the wall above him was tuned to the 24/7 Summer Games coverage, but no Demesetelian achievements were being touted. In fact, they had not won a medal in two days, something that weighed heavily on Ahmed. He knew the nation back home would be disappointed with the athletes, but his peers and the Demesetelian family would be disappointed with him. He was deliberating over his 2 o'clock spot, a pep talk with the Tennis players or attending a sparring match between the boxers, when his phone began to buzz. Number Unknown. Funnily enough, he knew exactly who this was. "My sultan." He answered.

The Grand Ole Palace

The setting sun casting rays of amber light through the tall windows of his office, Caane Demesetelis stood from his desk and walked to his drink cart to pour himself another whisky coke. Two parts whisky one part Coke, Caane sipped his strong drink as he left his office. Idly walking down the hallway, the silence was smothering. Only interrupted by the clicking of his heels on marble, he entered a stairwell and made his way down the three floors to subbasement B1. Stepping through an armored door to his shooting range, the absence of life was even more profound in the soundproof basement. No range attendant sat at the desk, and no university students filled the typically busy gun safety classroom. The world was silent. Caane had sent away any unnecessary staff and family for the week, and the palace seemed more like a tomb than the pride of the family it typically was. Grabbing a DR-15 from the wall rack, Caane loaded a magazine into the gun but did not fire it. Typically the shooting range was a good release for him, but at this moment the smell of spent gunpowder only reminded him of his nation's failure today. Unloading the rifle and placing it back on the wall, Caane exited the range with the same indifference he entered it with. Entering a nearby elevator, Caane continued to aimlessly walk the halls, only stopping once he reached his favorite smoking lounge on the fourth floor. Taking a seat on a comfortable leather recliner, Caane lit up a cigar and tuned the large television to the Summer Games coverage. Becoming more and more agitated as he watched the newscasters go on and on about 5 days of Saint August gold and some Britcani long jumper, he took out his phone and began to dial.

"My sultan." Answered Ahmed.

"Ahmed" Replied Caane, ever so slightly slurring his words, "What is going on over there? Two days of nothing?"

"My sultan, our athletes have been performing to the limit. We had a good showing in equestrian, but it is very unfortunate our shooting was not up to-"

"Unfortunate!? We got nothing! Our nation is a laughing stock of the Commonwealth! We pride ourselves on our strong weapons manufacturing but we can not present a single contender worth a damn when it comes to shooting? What happened to Balneen? You promised me a gold medal in his category!"

"It is very unfortunate Balneen was not feeling one hundred percent today, but I promise you the skill of our athletes will shine in the upcoming days." (Ahmed had scolded Balneen for his excessive partying when he arrived to the shooting arena hungover, but would not dare to share this with the Sultan) Quickly thinking of how to please the Sultan and end this conversation, he continued, "I promise you improvement over the next few days. Our tennis showing will represent our great nation's glory, that I swear." A slightly uncomfortable moment of silence passed before the sultan spoke.

"I truly hope so Ahmed, I do." Replied the sultan, almost dejectedly. "Make us proud. Everyone here is watching your athletes with great interest."

Leaving Ahmed with those words, Caane hung up the phone. The conversation did nothing to help the profound sadness he felt for his nation's mediocre showing throughout the games. He turned off the television and stubbed out his cigar in a single motion. Rising from his chair, he began to once again idly navigate the labyrinthine palace, this time towards the kitchens. The head chef was still on standby for his needs, and Caane could use a good sandwich to soak up some of the alcohol.

Slowly returning the phone to his suit jacket pocket, Ahmed rubbed his temples and sighed. He confirmed his pep talk with the tennis players tomorrow and closed his laptop. Rising from his desk and leaving the room, he walked down the hall with a reserved calmness not typical of someone who had just been chewed out by the disappointed leader of their country. Stepping outside onto a large balcony overlooking the Summer Games village, Ahmed caught the swimmer and his ladies smoking a joint. Silently he held out his hand and the swimmer gently placed the burning joint in it. He stared at him with what the swimmer interpreted as silent anger but was really a cold indifference. Quickly shuffling back into the building neither the swimmer nor his entourage met the committee head's gaze. Now alone on the balcony, instead of stamping out the joint Ahmed took a large puff as he leaned against the railing, contemplating the potential results of the upcoming events and their implications relating to his tenuous standing among the Demesetelian elite.
