Bahia Roja's Liga Nacional (CLOSED)

La Liga Nacional de Fútbol or Liga Nacional is the top professional football division of Bahía Roja. Administered by the Asociación Futbolística de Bahía Roja, the league is contested by 12 teams in a closed association of independently owned clubs from all around Bahía Roja. The league has a fixed membership, but is currently considering expanding to 16 teams by next season.

Throughout its first five editions, three teams have constantly dominated the league. The Universitario de Baruta, champions of the very first Liga, hold the current record for most Nacionales won, with 3 titles to their name. Both Atletico de Puerto Cano and Astronautas F.C hold one title each. Coincidentally, both Atletico and Astronautas have also ended up as runner-ups twice.

Other teams that constantly show potential throughout the league and like to challenge the leaders are the Halcones de Capuchinos and AD Bosqueverde, with Capuchinos ending up as runner-ups in the second edition.

CURRENT TEAMS

Image

TEAM PROFILES

Image
Astronautas F.C
Championships: 1 (Fourth Edition), Runner-Up: 2 (Third and Fifth Edition)

Manager: Julian Dávalos
Rivals: Atletico (The Puerto Cano derby), Universitario
Formation: 4-4-1-1
Main Line-Up: GK Axel Ferrant | DF Arturo Atenas, Darwin Silva, Juan Mastache, Keynner Rivas | MF Carlos Tenorio, Diego Alvarado, Johnny Ochoa, Christian Villa | FW Ernesto Capmany, Brayan Navarro

Information: A deadly mix of strong defense and offense. Astronautas is one of the most widely supported teams in the league, especially by those in southern Puerto Cano, however both their players and fans are disliked heavily by other teams in the league because of their constant showboating. They go head to head every once in a while against Atletico in the most exciting match of the league: the Puerto Cano derby.

Image
Atletico de Puerto Cano
Championships: 1 (Second Edition), Runner-Up: 2 (First and Fourth Edition)

Manager: Nico Andretti
Rivals: Astronautas (The Puerto Cano derby), Universitario
Formation: 3-4-3
Main Line-Up: GK Aarón Quesada | DF Daniel Tafalla, Juan Piñón, Ramón Pozo | MF Erick Villacrés, Rubén Moruga, Máximo Campos, Luis Miguel Aguayo | FW Luca Sáez, Diego Ferrant, Mario Rubio

Information: Hungry to no avail, Atletico has been one of, if not the strongest offensive team in the league. Their attacking trident, comprised of captain Luca Sáez, Mario Rubio and Diego Ferrant is feared by defenders and goalkeepers alike. They tend to clash constantly with their fierce rivals: Astronautas, where Diego's brother: Axel, plays as the goalkeeper.

Image
AD Bosqueverde
Championships: None, Highest Placement: 4th (Third Edition)

Manager: Jaime Magrina
Rivals: Capuchinos, Universitario, El Emilio
Formation: 4-3-3
Main Line-Up: GK Samuel Arias | DF Alexander Illescas, Anthony Arnal, Wilmer Lacasa, Kevinson Guerrido | MF Emilio Collazo, Manuel Dengra, Vicente Coronil | FW Lorenzo Farias, Daniel de Almeida, Tulio Asdrubal

Information: Bosqueverde has constantly shown potential throughout the years. However, they tend to fall short in their midfield and possession game. Recently, Bosqueverde has languished on the table, dropping from 2nd place to 9th place on the most recent edition of the Liga, after a series of embarrassing losses and ties.

Image
Halcones de Capuchinos
Championships: None, Runner-Up: 1 (Second Edition)

Manager: Julia Abellán
Rivals: Bosqueverde, El Emilio, Universitario
Formation: 4-4-2
Main Line-Up: GK Lucas Damasceno | DF Danilo Diaz, Luciano Rodríguez, Arthur Paiva, Isaac Pareja | MF Rodolfo Vila, Matthew Gisbert, Iván Pardo, Jonathan Reyes | FW Guillermo Noboa, Carlos Sanz

Information: The city of Capuchinos built a strong team that constantly delivers when it comes to goal-scoring and community service. The players and staff dedicate a good part of their money to improving parks and sports plazas in Capuchinos. Capuchinos has yet to win the championship, but each year they end up close to taking the trophy home. Their closest call was on the Second Edition of the Liga, where they ended up as runner-ups by merely one point against Atletico.

Image
SD Central
Championships: None, Highest Placement: 10th (Third Edition)

Manager: Álvaro de la Cruz
Rivals: Royal Club, San Miguel
Formation: 4-4-2
Main Line-Up: GK Bruno Amengual | DF Christian Manzanares, Mat Morillo, José Figueroa, Pedro Fernán | MF Martín Manzanedo, Gael Mancebo, Sergio París, Raúl Dávalos | FW Abel Fraga, Saúl Rasgado

Information: Most teams in the league think of Central as an easy opponent. To be fair, they are fairly easy to beat. But every once in a while, their players manage to stagnate or downright stop winning streaks. Last edition alone, they managed to be the only team that beat Universitarios twice. Keep an eye out for them; they might pull an ace or two out of their youth academy.

Image
Deportivo Asuzal
Championships: None, Highest Placement: 8th (First, Second, Third and Fifth Editions)

Manager: Víctor Barrueco
Rivals: San Miguel, El Emilio
Formation: 4-3-3
Main Line-Up: GK Édgar Andrade | DF Julian Indiano, Tommy Mina, Pedro Berrocal, Luis Lain | MF Pascual Carballar, Efrain González, Alonzo Cortés | FW Mateo Elvira, Bernabé Andrade, Marco Cotilla

Information: Deportivo Asuzal and ending up in eighth place go hand in hand. Fans of Deportivo keep waiting for their spell to be broken and break the eighth place barrier that has plagued the team since the beginning of the league. And under the direction of their new manager: Víctor Barrueco. Deportivo will strive to win, or at the very least get seventh place instead.

Image
El Emilio F.C
Championships: None, Highest Placement: 4th (Fourth Edition)

Manager: Rafa Águila
Rivals: Capuchinos, Bosqueverde, Deportivo Asuzal, Tiburones
Formation: 4-1-3-2
Main Line-Up: GK Lorenzo Molina | DF Diego Tenorio, Juan San Martín, Jerry Rojas, Ramón Alemán | MF Rico Alcabú, Gerardo Romero, Roberto Aparicio, Gustavo Reyes | FW Aarón Curbelo, Dylan Alcocer

Information: Some teams are made to win, some are made to lose. And some, like El Emilio F.C, are made to watch the world burn. They are despised across the nation for ruining the chances of underdog teams to win the league. And, they're the infamous team that made Capuchinos miss out on what could have been their first cup. It almost seems like they thrive from seeing their rivals suffer, and there's no signs of that changing any time soon.

Image
Royal Club
Championships: None, Highest Placement: 7th (Second and Fourth Edition)

Manager: Oscar Beldad
Rivals: SD Central
Formation: 4-4-2
Main Line-Up: GK Luciano Yepes | DF Ignazio Belasio, Sergio Halder, Silvio Duarte, Esteban Calvo | MF Natalio Iadanza, Alanzo Manna, Sandro Baresi, Édgar Galán | FW Hugo Correa, Dylan Seco

Information: Royal Club has a reputation of being posh and fancy. Ironically, they tend to give out the most disappointing performances in the league. That does not bother their fans, who usually come in suit and to Royal's games and celebrate the team's sporadic goals by clapping and nodding their heads. The team is hoping to receive players from more civilized countries when the transfer window opens. The nerve.

Image
San Miguel
Championships: None, Highest Placement: 10th (Fifth Edition)

Manager: Ramón Coronil
Rivals: SD Central, Deportivo Asuzal
Formation: 4-4-2
Main Line-Up: GK Julian Cherro | DF "Tajo" Ibañez, Fidel Páez, Xavier de la Cruz, Romeo Juárez | MF Roddy Molina, Alanzo Manna, Milagro Acuña, Damian Valdéz | FW Luis Fanucci, Aleix Peralta

Information: San Miguel usually stays at the bottom of the table throughout the league. The team is currently going through financial difficulties that make it hard for them to train their players properly. This however, was tackled by their new manager, Dr. Coronil, who hopes his investment into the team pays out nicely next season.

Image
Tiburones de Esparta
Championships: None, Highest Placement: 5th (First and Fourth Editions)

Manager: Albert Capitán
Rivals: El Emilio F.C, Tigres
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Main Line-Up: GK Juan Ascaso| DF Adrian Torrente, Saul Esposito, Mikel de Herrera, Renato Baggio | MF Ricky Bolívar, Marti Alonso, Cayetano Simone, Israel Sacristán, Aitor Zapata | FW Ben Montilla

Information: Just like real life sharks, Tiburones preys on their opponents and waits for the right moment to strike. Their lineup punishes any team that leaves holes and empty spaces in their defense. Curiously, defense is Tiburones' biggest weakness; so it's easy to use their offensive efforts against them. Tiburones went down in history by scoring 9 goals against Tigres in what is considered the worst thrashing in the history of the Liga, (so far).

Image
Tigres de Candelabros
Championships: None, Highest Placement: 5th (Second Edition)

Manager: Cech Ferrer
Rivals: Tiburones
Formation: 4-3-3
Main Line-Up: GK Gerard Artigas | DF Jesus Monedero, Santiago Russo, Hector Teixidó, Dario Corredor | MF Omar Pisano, Gael Laguna, Ian Montes | FW David Pastor, Alvaro Torres, Mati Soldado

Information: If one could descrive the Tigres' perfomance in the league with one word, it would be: inconsistent. Being a Tigres supporter is like playing Russian Roulette. You could either defeat Universitario 5-1, or you could receive 4 goals in the first half of a game against Tiburones. Who knows? One thing is for sure: you'll never be bored watching Tigres go up and down the table throughout the league.

Image
Universitario de Baruta
Championships: 3 (First, Third and Fifth Edition), Runner-Up: None

Manager: Jacobo Casaus
Rivals: Astronautas, Atletico, Capuchinos, Bosqueverde
Formation: 3-5-2
Main Line-Up: GK Iker Pomar | DF Ruben Ávila, Alvaro Torres, Eddy Vera | MF Jeremy Costa, Franco Valerio, Dante Prats-Moya, Jan Sahagún, Franco Pugliesi | FW Raul Sagese, Pablo Cruz

Information: The stars of the Liga. All teams fear the day where they have to face-off against Universitario. A well-rounded team; Universitario possesses a squad filled with wonderkids such as Iker Pomar, assist-leader Dante Prats-Moya and the league's leader in goals: Pablo Cruz. Universitario are unstoppable, as long as they don't get confident. We've seen how badly that went for them... twice.

MATCH OF THE MONTH

There's no doubt that San Miguel scoring against Universitario near the final whistle was this month's highlight.

The game was completely dominated by San Miguel when it comes to possession of the ball, and yet, a fatal mistake on their midfield was punished severely by Universitario. The counter-attack resulted in a wonderful header by Raul Sagese, assisted by Franco Pugliesi, to make the score 1 - 0. A yellow card was given to Roddy Molina after a mistimed tackle that sent Franco Valerio to the ground. Universitario became close to stretching their lead three times, but all of them ended with Julian Cherro deflecting the ball away. With five minutes to go, a corner was given to San Miguel. Damian Valdéz made a short pass to Alanzo Manna, who crossed the ball into the area. The ball was received by Luis Fanucci, who gave a strong shot that bounced back from Iker Pomar's gloves. The ball ended at the feet of Aleix Peralta, who tapped it in to tie the game.

An unexpected show of strenght from San Miguel, a team considered to be one of the weakest in the Liga. In any case, it was a great match to start our sixth edition with and it set the season's tone early on. As we've seen this month, it's anybody's game at this point.

Let's see how the teams stand on the table after an exciting month!

STANDINGS

Image

MATCH OF THE MONTH

Universitario is this month's protagonist alongside Royal Club, a team that seems to have undergone massive renovations since last season.

The goals started quickly with Dylan Seco scoring at the five minute mark with an impressive volley assisted by Natalio Iadanza. However, their lead wouldn't last too long in the first half. An own goal by Esteban Calvo drove the game to 1-1, and then Universitarios scored twice in a span of 20 minutes with a free kick that found its target by Dante Prats-Moya and an amazing run by Pablo Cruz. Halftime started, and after some key substitutions from Royal Club, the Universitario squad had a hard time catching up to their opponents. A brilliant move by Édgar Galán put the ball in a dangerous position that Dylan Seco took advantage of, driving the score towards 3-2. A few brilliant saves by Luciano Yepes kept Universitarios in check. Enough for Hugo Correa to take the lead and score against Universitario to cement the 3-3.

Is this the end of an era? Are we seeing the start of the downfall of Universitario? Stay tuned for next month!

STANDINGS

Image

MATCH OF THE MONTH

As expected by many, our match of the month is the Puerto Cano derby: Astronautas vs Atletico.

If there is any testament to how evenly matched Astronautas and Atletico actually are, it's this match's result. A lot of chances, and a lot of fights and quite a lot of questionable decisions from the referee according to Atletico fans. FOURTEEN ON-TARGET SHOTS... FOURTEEN! Fourteen shots denied by each team's talented goalies. In the end, a single goal was enough to decide who gets the top spot for the meantime. Brayan Navarro scores after being left unmarked thanks to the efforts of Christian Villa. 1-0.

Teams come and go from first place. Who will take the spot next time? Stay tuned to figure it out!

MATCH OF THE MONTH

El Emilio's win against San Miguel is our pick for Match of the Month!

It has not been a good season for El Emilio. They've lost 8 times through this season, and each loss was more painful than the last one. Due to that, seeing El Emilio beat San Miguel 3-2 was extremely entertaining. El Emilio scored first with a nice powerful shot by Dylan Alcocer. A few fouls here and there left El Emilio with 4 yellow cards and San Miguel with an injured player. El Emilio bagged two more goals to their name with shots from Alcocer and Curbelo, assisted by Gustavo Reyes. That didn't stop San Miguel from scoring twice against El Emilio, but their efforts did not pay off at the end. The game ended up 3-2 in favor of El Emilio, who were so desperately needing a victory.

Great game from both teams! The table is a wild place, and anything could happen. See you next month!

We have reached the middle of the season here at Liga Nacional.

It's been a tale of comeuppances and downfalls, of strength and courage, and of wins and losses. There's 10 weeks to go before we unveil our champion, but first, let's see how the teams are standing up.

In case you've missed it, here are the current standings as of Matchweek 12 in the league.

STANDINGS

Image

ANALYSIS

Throughout the Sixth Edition, it's clear that three teams have dominated when it comes to winning games and scoring goals. These are Astronautas, Atletico and Bosqueverde. This edition's surprise comes from Tiburones, who after having a rough start, managed to knock Astronautas out of the top 3 and have cemented themselves in third place.

As we've seen, predictions are nearly useless in this competition. So instead of trying to predict a winner, let's analyze what these teams did right, and in some cases, what they did wrong.

Image
AD Bosqueverde

Current Standing: 1st place
Highlighted players: Lacasa (DF), Guerrido (DF)

What they did right: Bosqueverde managed to hold back counter-attacks, offensives, speedy forwards and long passes with their common, but effective 4-3-3 formation. Lacasa and Guerrido make sure nothing gets past them and shut down possibilities for crosses and passes to the area from the sides. Bosqueverde is patient when it comes to attacking, the midfield tends to drop down a little bit and they utilize short passes to build-up momentum. It's this style of gameplay that has led to a streak of victories recently. In the end, as opposite squads grow tired, it's harder for them to catch up to the fast movements of the Bosqueverde squad.

What they did wrong: Even with Lacasa and Guerrido on the sides, Bosqueverde sometimes leave a lot to desire when it comes to clearing the ball away from their area. Fatal mistakes in defense and midfield have cost them games, and their forwards are average compared to strikers like Diego Ferrant from Atletico or Brayan Navarro from Astronautas. This leads Bosqueverde in vulnerable situations that can be hard to escape from as seen by their match against Tiburones in Matchweek 7.

Image
Atletico de Puerto Cano

Current Standing: 2nd place
Highlighted players: D. Ferrant (FW), Rubio (FW)

What they did right: Strong formation capable of quickly switching from offense to defense. The performances of strikers Diego Ferrant and Mario Rubio, (the former being the top scorer of the league at the moment) have been splendid. That is not to say, everybody else has done a bad job, of course. The team comes together thanks to the midfield and defense, who been working together nicely in order to score goals and win games. Overall, a strong showcase of strength from the squad and kudos to Mr. Andretti for doing such a good job.

What they did wrong: As seen by their most recent game against Astronautas, their biggest strength can be flipped to become their most annoying weakness. The 3-4-3 formation leaves a very wide gap behind the defense that can be easily exploited by teams that rely on counter-attack and long passes. Mistakes can also be easily punished by opponents, especially if they occur on the back. Some argue that a lack of width in the midfield slows Atletico down, but, it seems that the risk they take with midfield has paid off nicely when setting up scoring chances for the forwards.

Image
Tiburones de Esparta

Current Standing: 3rd place
Highlighted players: Sacristán (MF), Zapata (MF)

What they did right: Tiburones continued their tradition of strong midfield game, and most experts agree that this tradition played an important role in their climb from 9th to 3rd place. Their 4-2-3-1 formation leaves five men in the middle, ready to attack, dispossess, assist and, sometimes, score. A key player in this highly impressive midfield is definitely Israel Sacristán, a box-to-box, highly versatile midfielder that seems to have infinite stamina.

What they did wrong: The Tiburones' defense had a hard time finding their footing at the beginning of the season. But, once they did, it became nearly impossible to score against Tiburones. Tiburones would benefit greatly from being able to figure out a way to switch from defense to offense efficiently. If not, it's very likely teams will catch up to their passive gameplay and punish them for it.

Image
Astronautas F.C

Current Standing: 4th place
Highlighted players: Navarro (FW), A. Ferrant (GK)

What they did right: Having a strong offensive squad that can counter-attack quickly and punish defensive mistakes. The decision to use Capmany as a false number 9 to leave speedy forward Brayan Navarro unmarked against the goal was a smart tactical choice and the midfielders are always on the lookout to pass the ball forward, especially assist-leader Christian Villa. Let's not overlook the performance of Axel Ferrant. A player that is considered the best goalkeeper in Bahia Roja without a lot of dispute. He's saved Astronautas more than once thanks to his quick reactions and impressive elasticity.

What they did wrong: That 4-4-1-1 formation is a gamble that has not been paying off recently. Earlier, teams fell victim to the counter-attacks and offensive efforts of Astronautas. However, Bosqueverde noticed the wide gaps in defense and made use of strong possession gameplay to score against Astronautas, and it seems more and more squads are catching up. Ferrant makes valiant efforts when the defense falls apart, but understandibly, there's so much he can do against two forwards completely unmarked in the area.

Back at it again at Liga Nacional. Bosqueverde holds an one-point lead over Atletico and Tiburones. Astronautas rolls down to 4th place and a battle between Capuchinos and Universitarios is brewing. Royal Club struggles to not fall to the bottom three, and Deportivo Asuzal strives to get out of 12th place.

We have interesting matches for this week: Capuchinos will face off against Atletico and Astronautas back to back. They're looking to hurt the Puerto Cano teams and hope to get a boost that leads to the top 3 spots.

Do we have a champion already? Let's find out in Matchweeks 13 - 15!

MATCHWEEK 13

Day 37

Deportivo Asuzal 2 - 2 Tiburones

El Emilio F.C 1 - 2 Universitario

Day 38

San Miguel 3 - 1 Royal Club

Capuchinos 0 - 2 Atletico

Day 39

Tigres 1 - 2 Astronautas

SD Central 1 - 1 Bosqueverde

A painful draw against Deportivo Asuzal hurts the chances of staying in the top 3 for Tiburones. Bosqueverde dethroned after conceding a last minute goal to SD Central in our match of the month, Astronautas tries to catch up to Atletico, but Atletico manages to take the top spot after demolishing Capuchinos with ease. It's crazy how things change around here!

MATCHWEEK 14

Day 40

Universitario 1 - 1 Tiburones

Royal Club 0 - 3 El Emilio F.C

Day 41

Atletico 0 - 2 San Miguel

Astronautas 2 - 1 Capuchinos

Day 42

Bosqueverde 2 - 1 Tigres

SD Central 2 - 0 Deportivo Asuzal

Another low blow for Tiburones, who could not maintain their position on the top 3. Same goes for Atletico, as their embarrasing loss against San Miguel left an opportunity for their eternal rivals Astronautas to place themselves in the top spot. Royal Club's chances are turned to dust, and Bosqueverde recovers after their previous match and wins easily against Tigres, but is it enough to give them second, or maybe even first place? Let's find out now.

MATCHWEEK 15

Day 43

Deportivo Asuzal 0 - 1 Universitario

Tiburones 1 - 1 Royal Club

Day 44

El Emilio F.C 2 - 1 Atletico

San Miguel 0 - 2 Astronautas

Day 45

Capuchinos 1 - 1 Bosqueverde

Tigres 1 - 2 SD Central

Atletico plummets to third with yet another loss. Astronautas recovers gracefully from their drought and reclaims their top spot in the tables. Bosqueverde clings on to the top 3 by tying against Capuchinos, and Tiburones finally gets a chance to recover and get inside the top 3 after almost losing against Royal Club, all they need is to win just once... and they're in. More to come here at the Liga!

MATCH OF THE MONTH

Bosqueverde's painful draw against SD Central is our pick for match of the month!

Bosqueverde was soaring high at the top of the table. And it seemed that they were going to stay there for a long, long while. After all, their next match was against SD Central, a team that's considered an easy opponent by most squads in the league. For 87 minutes, it seemed that Bosqueverde would maintain their position in first place. But, things turned sour for them when out of nowhere (and thanks to Bosqueverde slowing down their pace due to mistimed smugness), SD Central launched a strong offensive effort that overwhelmed their defenses. Gael Mancebo ran with the ball and tried to score from a tricky place, but the ball was deflected by goalkeeper Arias in a brilliant move. However, the ball bounced back towards the head of Abel Fraga, who tapped it in with a header. Squaring the game up with one minute to go.

Hopefully Bosqueverde learned something out of this catastrophical ending: never let your guard down, especially when you're in the Liga.

MATCH OF THE MONTH

Universitario's victory against Atletico is our pick for match of the month!

Atletico is trailing behind their sworn enemies: Astronautas. There's nothing that would sting more than their fervent rivals to win their second Liga before them. They desperately need wins, and they desperately need Astronautas to lose. However, neither of those things happened. Not only is Astronautas on a six-game winning streak, but Atletico lost painfully against Universitario. The first half was managed successfully by the Atletico squad, a goal by none other than Diego Ferrant put Atletico on the right path. But, things went south at 44 minutes played, when out of nowhere, speedy kid Pablo Cruz slipped past the defense and scored.

During the second half, Universitario found the spark that's been missing. They came out and punished every single defensive and offensive mistake made by Atletico. It was refreshing to see Universitario dominate a game once again after this less than illustrious season. Two goals by Raul Sagese and a free kick scored by Dante Prats-Moya set the game. Atletico had plenty of chances to recover, but they were wasted.

Even though this victory is not enough for Universitario to get back at the top, it was reassuring to see that the squad is still capable of demolishing teams, just like they used to do in past seasons.

MAN OF THE MATCH: RAUL SAGESE (UNIVERSITARIO)
