So, I have a quick question. Doing a bit of research around NS, I heard there used to be a right-wing and left-wing general thread. Why were those shut down?

They were shut down mainly for being too general and hard to moderate. I mean, there are a ton of variants in leftism and rightism, so they eventually became just general chat threads of sorts for people who belong to those ideologies. So, they were shut down after mods decided to not allow chat threads beyond a dedicated one that was mod sanctioned.

TL;DR: the right-wing thread was filled with regulars who consistently broke the rules and harassed others, and used their thread to do so. So the mods shut it down, and at the same time shut down the left-wing thread to avoid the appearance of ideological bias.

Pretty much. The last iteration of LWDT actually wasn't that bad as far as rule breaking goes.

The RWDT was shut down because it was full of rule breaking behavior and a hub to target attacks against other users.

The LWDT otoh, was shut down because the mods didn't want to appear ideologically biased, even though there was miles of differences when it came to rule breaking behavior between the 2.
