5th Hopalian Parliamentary Election

Postby Hopal » Mon Jun 07, 2021 6:26 pm

It has been almost six months since the last Hopalian Election, and almost 10 ten months of rule under Prime Minister John Stophoe, the longest serving Prime Minister in Hopalian history. He has been a controversial figure at time but he has had the ability to unite the nation when it mattered the most, he has shaped Hopalian policy moderating some of Hopal's socialist and big government policies. He has become a respected leader after rallying the Hopalian people in times of crisis and leading Hopal through to a new era. He announced in late March that he would not seek re-election to a third term saying that "politics has become too tiring" for him, leaving a power gap in the governing Independence Party in which he was the dominating figure that held together a party with people from all different points of the political spectrum.

The Election was originally scheduled for June 28, but after the Minister of the Environment Mary Koi resigned following a damning report on the Ministry of the Environment by the Ministry of Oversight causing the collapse of the Second Stophoe Administration triggering an early election. The election would be rescheduled for June 19 with the campaign season starting June 7, making this campaign season the longest in Hopalian history. John Stophoe was invited by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Harrison to form a third administration as Interim Prime Minister until an election would be held, an office that he holds today. But it isn't just Stophoe and his party that will be experiencing power gaps this election season, the Civil Rights and Liberal parties will both be having open leadership races this election seasons after their leaders Lena Griskoi and John Leswig both announced they would not run for Prime Minister a third and fourth time respectively. But with these open leadership races and with the amount of seats in Parliament being lowered from 650 to 470 as declared by the Hopalian Elections Commission, with each Member of Parliament representing more people in the next Parliament, pitting incumbents against each other in certain races, this election will certainly be an interesting race.

This thread is open for endorsements, questions for the leadership conventions and debates, as well as questions more generally, and also speeches supporting candidates in Hopal if applied for.

The first Leadership Convention of the night will be that of the Civil Rights Party at the Port Hope Convention Centre in Port Hope, three people have declared their intention to run as candidates to become the Leader and Candidate for Prime Minister of the Civil Rights Party. Mike Fury is on the more libertarian and classical liberal end of the party advocating for the repeal of all restrictions on all things and for a return to the Capitalism system of economics with a smaller government. Gamora Andill is on the more left wing end of the party advocating for easier access to the government for people and less restrictions and more support for people. While Ken Alloway is in the middle, a close associate of Former Leader Lena Griskoi and is trying to keep the party together, trying to combine these ideas while making them a bit more moderate.

Hopal wrote:The candidates release their platforms on the Convention floor and the floor opens for questions.

One person in the audience asks "Can we truly be free under a Socialist System?"

Mike Fury immediately answers with a resounding "NO!" he further explains his position saying "We cannot be fully free until the restrictions and burdens on society are removed. If we are restricted, than we aren't free are we? Isn't that Socialism just is? It's just a restriction on people doing business on economics. I want to see that restriction repealed, I want to see people be able to do what they want, to make money, to make business, and that is what will happen if I'm Prime Minister."
Ken Alloway objects saying "I think Civil Rights and Socialism can live together, while yes I agree people need more economic freedom, and I'll give that to them on a local level. But we still need to be sensible, we need to protect Hopalians from big multinational companies that are just there for their money, and we need to preserve the Hopalian identity."
Mike Fury blasts back saying "You know Socialism doesn't protect people, it's just a ploy to give more power to the government, that's what it is. And people should be able to make their own decisions about what's right for them, they should be free to make their own decisions, isn't that what this party and Civil Rights is all about?"
Gamora Andill interjects saying "I think we all agree that people need more freedom, they need more economic freedom, but I think we also need to ensure that everyone has equal opportunity and ability to be free, which some people just didn't have under Capitalism, look at America for instance."
"America is great, America is Free." Mike Fury says before the next question is asked.

Another person asks "Is the government too big, is the government corrupt?"

Mike Fury answers with a "Yes" explaining "The government is too big, and it has been intruding on people's freedoms."
Gamora Andill says "People need to be able to access their services, and the government despite being big is slow, and there is too much in the of acutally doing what it seeks to achieve, and to help the Hopalian people."
Ken Alloway simply replies "I don't know, and that'll be investigated when I'm Prime Minister."

A differen person asks "Should Hopal intervene in foreign conflicts?"

Ken Alloway is the first to respond this tike saying "If we truly believe in Civil Rights, in Human Rights we must try to give the world, everyone in the world these rights by whatever mean nesessary, if that includes intervention in conflict then so be it."
Gamora Andill differs saying "I think we ought to focus on and fix the problems in our country, our own government. And make our country perfect before we can go around fighting in conflicts saying we are doing it for the good of the people."
After thinking about it for a short while Mike Fury responds saying "We need to have a smaller government, so we can't and shouldn't have the government fighting and determining our position in foreign policy. If individual Hopalians want to fight in foreign conflicts they can do that, I can't stop them."
Ken Alloway responds pointing out a precious comment Fury had made saying "But what out spreading Civil Rights, isn't that what this party is all about?"

Before the leasership vote Gamora Andill and Ken Alloway come to an agreement in which Ken Alloway will incorporate some of the positions on domestic policy of Andill's platform in his own platform and Andill will drop out of the race and endorse him. Another person who endorsed Alloway was Lena Griskoi who spoke fondly of her friend on thr convention floor. Alloway woukd win the leadership race with 68% of the vote against Fury's 32%.

The second leadership convention was that of the Independence Party which was left with only one candidate after Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and prospective candidate for the Independence Party leadership Bob Doling announced right before the convention that he would be leaving the Independence Party and joining the Civil Rights, after being persuaded by the election of their new leader Ken Alloway. That left the Minister of Finance and Chair of the Independence Party Harry Felixon as the presumptive leader of the Independence Party. Felixon has been an establishment member of the Independence Party, being Stophoe's right hand man supporting him in all of his endeavors. He has been a quiet yet influential man. While Doling on the other hand is fairly new the Hopalian political scene, he quickly rose up the ranks becoming Minister of Education in September, before becoming Minister of Foreign Affairs in January as the only person who would agree with Stophoe's new interventionist approach. A decision Stophoe now regrets as he grows tired of war and political life. Something that was shown as Doling was shut out of Stophoe's third cabinet, he had also been defeated in the election to become the Chair of the Independence Party to Felixon, he did not receive Stophoe's endorsement. He is a nationalist leader who supports intervention in foreign conflicts, but he also supports giving more liberties and rights to Hopalians, in stark contrast to Felixon's more moderate views.

Felixon would receive 100% of the vote in the leadership race as the only candidate.

-The third and last leadership convention of the night of June 7 was that of the Liberal Party at the Avion Convention Centre in Hopton near Hopton Airport. The two candidates that declared that they were going to run to become Leader of the Liberal Party were John Sanchez and Maximo Castro. Sanchez is running as the more establishmentarian candidate, he was Minister of Immigration under Prime Ministers Harrison Reid and Jack Nicholls and also Minister of Industry under Prime Minister Jerry Manion, he is running on a platform of maintained and protecting the current institution, standards, policies, and programs in place right now in Hopal. Maxime Castro was also a Minister the in first three Hopalian cabinets, serving as Minister of Health under Prime Ministers Harrison Reid and Jack Nicholls and he was also Minister of Immigration under Prime Minister Jerry Manion, he is the more libertarian candidate in the race, and while he is by no mean advocating for what the Civil Right Party stands for he does support more freedoms for Hopalians.

Hopal wrote:The candidates release their platforms on the Convention floor and the floor opens for questions.

The first question asked was "Should we grant Hopalians more Civil Rights? Why or why not?"

Maxime Castro doesn't hesitate to answer and does so immediately saying "We should absolutely give people more Civil Rights we need to be a free society, and I don't see the point of some of these useless restriction that just restrict for the sake of restrictions. I'm not advocating for a total life on restrictions, like some in the Civil Rights Party are, I'm not that foolish, what I am advocating for though is the removal of these absolutely useless restrictions that harm the Hopalian people and infringe upon what should be their rights."
John Sanchez responded saying "There are restrictions, yes. But there are reasons for those restrictions, they are to protect the Hopalian people, to maintain our public decency, you know and we all know that."
Maxime Castro retorts by saying "0.9% of Hopalians die in police custody, 10.6% of our national budget is allocated to Law and Order, Hopalians are getting for doing the slightest little misstep that goes outside of a law. This needs to stop, this is too far. We need to remember why we came here, why we declared this country, what our purpose, what our values were. We have a national identity that has been lost, and we need to reclaim it."
John Sanchez replies by saying "The Liberal Party built what is Hopal today, and our government and our standards are our national identity."
Maxime Castro finishes by saying "But what about when we declared this nation."

The second question asked was "When is it necessary to intervene in foreign conflicts?"

John Sanchez smiled and took up this question first saying "Thank you for the question, any I say whenever democracy, human rights, and people are at risk. When there is a threat to those three things we need to intervene, we need to protect democracy, human rights, and people, and I will do just that as your Prime Minister."
Maxime Castro thought over this question for a bit before responding "I think we should wait the judgment of the ICDN before intervening in conflicts, I think we are stronger that way, and we will truly enter when what Mr. Sanchez described is at risk. I don't think we should be a nation that goes rogue, there's too much with that, and so I would follow the lead of the ICDN when entering foreign conflicts."
John Sanchez responded by saying "I agree with you we should try to get the approval of the ICDN when intervening in conflicts, but I think we should do what is right no matter what."

There were no major endorsements by party leaders in the Liberal Leadership Race, with the outgoing Party Leader John Leswig refusing to make an endorsement. The highest profile endorsement would probably be that of disgraced Former Prime Minister Jerry Manion endorsing John Sanchez. Manion had been the person who had put in place many of the restrictions in Hopal today, though he became disgraced after an invasion and what was essentially a coup after Manion's refusal to allow a Parliamentary Investigation into the Baltic NRC scandal of his predecessor. But it would be Castro that narrowly wins the leadership race with 51.26% of the vote to Sanchez's 48.74% of the vote.

Two more conventions were held on June 8th, that of the two minor parties the Christian Party and Peace Party.

The first was that of the Christian Party, which unanimously elected Kenmori Silfern to be their leader by a voice vote. Silfern was the charismatic priest of Christ's Church in Hopal, a fundamentalist church in rural Hopal. He is considered to be a radical even by a lot of the Christian movement, he led an armed uprising against the government, he created his own version of the Christian Party for the 4th Parliamentary Election after it disbanded before the 3rd Parliamentary Election. He has since made it his own party lining it up with his own fundamentalist views, so it isn't a surprised he would be unanimously acclaimed as its leader.

Platform
-Remove the separation between Church and State
-Make Christianity the official religion of Hopal
-Make Hopal a theocracy
-Make homosexuality illegal
-Make abortion illegal
-Keep current restrictions in place
-Keep most current programs in place including socialism
-Withdraw from the ICDN and make a Christian World Alliance

The second convention would be that of the Peace Party which also chose its founder to be its leader through the next election unanimously. Their leader though had starkly different views to the leader of the Christian Party. Barbara Lambdon, the Minister of Education under Harrison Reid and Jack Nicholls had founded the party under the party under the principle of making peace with the world. After breaking with the Liberal Party after losing its leadership election in the last election Lambdon created the Peace Party running on a platform of making peace in the world and expanding social programs, and she would run under the same platform in this election, unanimously winning the leadership race of the Peace Party.

The Liberal Party inquires into why a banker from a capitalist and gun-supporting country would support the most pro-socialist and anti-gun major party?

The first poll of the election season was released before the first debate of Prime Ministerial Candidates on June 12, the first question was: Which Party do you currently Support? The Results are as follows: Civil Rights Party-37% Independence Party-23% Liberal Party-21% Peace Party-3% Christian Party->1% Undecided-15%

When the Undecided vote was asked which Party there were leaning towards, added on to the previous poll, the results are as follows: Civil Rights Party 43% Independence Party-25% Liberal Party-25% Peace Party-5% Christian Party-1%

That result translated into seats in Parliament as per geographical constituency are as follows: Civil Rights Party-178 seats Independence Party-159 seats Liberal Party-130 seats Peace Party-6 seats Christian Party-1 seat
The results show that no party reaches a majority of seats, that number being 236 seats meaning that according to this poll there will be a hung parliament meaning that there will have to be a coalition agreement to form a government or Hopalians will have to elect another Parliament. The poll also shows that the Independence mostly wins their seats in the north of or north of Hopton, governmental districts, and in the port cities. While the Civil Rights Party has support in urban areas, and among young people in university districts. Liberal support is spread out across the country though it is concentrated in the towns in the valley region. The poll also shows poor results for the Christian Party with many people not regarding them as a serious party.

The first Prime Ministerial debate of the election season took place on June 12 at HBC headquarters in Hopton, the debate was moderated by HBC News Chief Anchor Heather Coleman.

"Thank you for tuning into the first Prime Ministerial debate of this election season here in Hopal, and thank you to the candidates for attending. Here in attendance are all of the candidates of all 5 parties running for Parliament: Harry Felixon for the Independence Party, Ken Alloway for the Civil Rights Party, Maxime Castro for the Liberal Party, Barbara Lambdon for the Peace Party, and Kenmori Silfern for the Christian Party. This is an election that may change the course of Hopalian history and it is imperative that your questions are answered, so we will be taking question from all across Hopal and indeed around the world. But first let's let the candidate give their opening statements, what you stand for, why you're running, and how you'll govern. The candidates will speak in order of their placement in the last election so first let's hear from Harry Felixon."

"Well thank you Heather, and thank you all for tuning in. I'm Harry Felixon, I'm currently serving as your Minister of Finance, and my stance is simple continue what has been a successful Stophoe administration. If you like what we have, if you think what we have now is perfectly fine, than I am the candidate for you. I am running to preserve all that we have accomplished, to stand with the silent majority, for those who work and don't complain, I am your candidate. I will govern with a steady hand, with caution, and cautious optimism, I will carefully consider my options, and I will govern with reason. I will listen to others and all of you on how to govern, that is my promise to you."

"Right then up next is Ken Alloway."

Ken Alloway nodded "Unlike some here may think Hopalians do not stop for second best, they do not settle for what is comfortable, but for what is right, those are the Hopalians I am running for, and those are the Hopalians I will govern for. I will truly bring power back to the people, bring government closer to the people they govern, I will not persecute Hopalians the way previous governments had. I will stand for your rights, I will ensure your rights, that's why I am running. Hopalians are too restricted these days, we do not want authoritarian democracy, we want a free nation, that is my vison for Hopal, and that is the Hopal I will create."

"Up next Maximo Castro."

"Somewhere along the history of our nation we lost the purpose of our founding, we forgot the vision of our founder, we forgot the vison of Harrison Reid. The dream he had when he proclaimed our nation, the one he tried to implement during his short tenure. I am running under that vison, to restore that vison for Hopal, and to make that dream a reality. We need to be free yes, but we also need to maintain our system, that is socialism, we need to return to the pacifism of the past, we need trust in our institutions may that be the Ministry of the Environment of the ICDN. We need to preserve our way of life, but we also need to revitalize it. That is what I will do as Prime Minister, and again I am running to restore the vision of our first Prime Minister."

"Barbara Lambdon."

"Remember when our government worked for the people, remember when we actually tried to solve our problems, to make peace in the world, to use our diplomatic channels. It's been a long time hasn't it, I know, and as Prime Minister I will do all of that again, I will restore the purpose of our government, values to our work, and I will use every avenue to prevent war, to do all of that, that is my platform, and that why I am running."

"Alright, let's hear from Kenmori Silfern."

"I am guided by my faith, by god, the bible, and Christ. I am running for their vison, we have lost our faith, we lost Christianity not just in Hopal, but in the government, to restore Christianity is what I will do, and why I am running. I will govern my god, Christ, and the bible, it is that simple."

"Thank you all again for attending, we will now take questions."

On June 14 Maxime Castro met with Harrison Reid and many other government officials in Hopton, presenting himself as the true statesman in the race highlighting his experience in government, continuing his messages of being the candidate to carry out the vision of Harrison Reid and the candidate that will protect current programs and the jobs of government workers. Harry Felixon remained on the coast meeting with Port workers and union officials in Port Hope with Linda Cole, the Minister of Public Services and Former Minister of Labour and union leader, Felixon tries to present himself as the candidate for Labour and union workers. He then went to visit suburban voters in Port cities presenting himself as the candidate for ordinary people. Ken Alloway went to visit various churches and mosques in the countryside meeting with various religious figures saying that he will give all people religious freedom when elected. Barbara Lambdon visited college and university districts in Hopton trying to rally support among young voters. Kenmori Silfern gave angered and fiery speeches in his constituency and called for a meeting for Christian leaders at his church.

On June 15 Ken Alloway made his way to Hopton meeting with business leaders and government officials in the business district where he received an endorsement from the Valleski Foundation for Capitalism in Hopal, and he pledged to allow more economic freedom to people in Hopal. Meanwhile Maxime Castro traveled to Port Hope and meeting with the Mayor of Port Hope Erik Liberman portraying himself as a statesman and he made a speech on Hopal Beach where Harrison Reid proclaimed the founding of Hopal, he said that he would "fulfill the promise and legacy of Hopal and its founder." Meanwhile Harry Felixon attending many town halls on the coasts presenting himself as a leader who speaks with his people. Barbara Lambdon visited a national park and met with environmentalists and activists affirming her support to fight climate change. Kenmori Silfern met with Christians leader trying to get their support, but it was much to no avail and he would condemn most of the leaders after the meeting.

The second poll of the election season was also released on June 15, When asked Which Party do you currently Support? The Results are as follows: Civil Rights Party-32% Liberal Party-25% Independence Party-22% Peace Party-4% Christian Party->1% Undecided-16%

When the Undecided vote was asked which Party there were leaning towards, added on to the previous poll, the results are as follows: Civil Rights Party-38% Liberal Party-29% Independence Party-24% Peace Party-8% Christian Party->1%

That result translated into seats in Parliament as per geographical constituency are as follows: Civil Rights Party-158 seats Independence Party-156 seats Liberal Party-150 seats Peace Party-8 seats Christian Party-1 seat
It seems that Ken Alloway's rural tour did not work as he did not gain many seats that area, though he did see an uptick in support. But his support of religion and capitalism has seemed to give losses in the cities and among higher educated individuals. Maxime Castro though has gained a lot of support among people in Hopton gaining seats from the Civil Rights Party and from the Independence Party in the government districts. The Independence Party's losses seem to be counteracted by their gains in the coastal region gaining seats from the Civil Rights Party. The Peace Party is also gaining both seats and support from the Civil Rights Party in Hopton, among younger and poorer voters. Meanwhile Kenmori Silfern is losing support outside of his constituency and seems to be alienated from even his own base in the last election after he condemned Christian leaders.

On June 16 seeing as his polling numbers were going down Ken Alloway attending many liberal and socialist conference trying to win back socialist and liberal-leaning voters saying that he'll keep socialism and all that Harrison Reid and Hopal has achieved, and said that he was the true liberal candidate as he was the one advocating for liberty and liberalism. While Harry Felixon returned to Hopton to try to win over urban and bureaucratic voters espousing the achievements of John Stophoe and what they have done for all people and government workers. While Maxime Castro tried to rebuild the liberal party's relations with unions and labour, meeting with many union officials and workers, but they didn't get much of anywhere. Barbara Lambdon met with college and university students in Hopton saying that she will be the one who can build the best future for Hopal, one of peace and prosperity and she tried to portray herself as the most prudent candidate. Meanwhile many of his advisors and the people closest to him advised Kenmori Silfern to dropout of the race after his lashing out against Christian leaders but he doubled down in his comments in a speech at his church.

On June 17 Ken Alloway continued his strategy of trying to win back his old supporters this time focusing on young, urban, and student voters trying to portray himself and his vision as the best one for the Hopalians of the future asking a congregation of students in a university hall "Do you want a restricted future?" Barbara Lambdon in contrast went on an offensive against Ken Alloway attacking him calling him "a fake liberal" and saying that his future would be one of "war and chaos." Maxine Castro meanwhile met with activists and representatives of various organizations in Port Hope, saying that he will listen to all Hopalians announcing that he would create a new government department to listen to ideas and concerns of Hopalians and try to implement the best ideas of all Hopalians. Harry Felixon remained in Hopton meeting with various government officials and cabinet ministers highlighting his work within and connections to the Stophoe Administration. Kenmori Silfern tried to rally his supporters and gain traction and support in his constituency.

The second poll of the election season was also released on June 17, When asked Which Party do you currently Support? The Results are as follows: Civil Rights Party-32% Liberal Party-25% Independence Party-23% Peace Party-7% Christian Party->1% Undecided-12%

When the Undecided vote was asked which Party there were leaning towards, added on to the previous poll, the results are as follows: Civil Rights Party-35% Liberal Party-30% Independence Party-25% Peace Party-10% Christian Party-1%

That result translated into seats in Parliament as per geographical constituency are as follows: Independence Party-160 seats Civil Rights Party-149 seats Liberal Party-147 seats Peace Party-16 seats Christian Party-1 seat
The Peace Party has made significant gains winning seats in urban Hopton from the Civil Rights Party and Liberal Party. The Liberal Party and Independence Party swapped seats with the Liberal Party gaining seats in Port Hope from the Independence Party and the Independence Party gaining seats from the Liberal Party in Hopton, with the Independence Party gaining more seats overall and managing to get the most amount of seats in Parliament. But with the Civil Rights Party in damage control they have lost some seats to various parties. The Christian Party has managed to hold on to the one seat, and that is the constituency of Kenmori Silfern, holding on to the seat despite its many blunders.

Is this based solely off what NSG votes for, or are you going to add your own results?

I'll use the NSG votes as a very rough indicator of which direct polls and the popular vote is going, but it's mostly off of what I think Hopal would vote for. But for example if a candidate I though a bad day, but their votes on the poll were going up then I would their IC numbers stay around the same or go up by a little bit.

Would endorsements actually affect support for a candidate, or is it solely a declaration of who you support?
(I'll cease with the questions if you want. I'm just curious as the OP was rather vague.)
