Military Coup in Mali

Postby Kowani » Mon May 24, 2021 4:44 pm

Malian soldiers unhappy with the new government announced by the transitional authorities took the president and prime minister by force on Monday to the Kati military camp, a few kilometres from Bamako, in a coup shaking the country plunged in a deep crisis.

"The president and prime minister are here in Kati on business," a senior military official told AFP. A government official, also speaking on condition of anonymity given the sensitive nature of the information, confirmed that the heads of the transitional executive, President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane, had been taken to Kati, the centre of Mali's military apparatus.

It was there that President-elect Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta was forcibly taken by coup colonels on 18 August 2020 to announce his resignation. It seems that the same colonels are at work nine months later.

Their intentions are not known. In 2012, Prime Minister Modibo Diarra was arrested by coup plotters and forced to resign.

Shortly before, the transitional Prime Minister had indicated that he had been taken under duress by soldiers to the home of President Ban Ndaw on Monday.

"I confirm: Goïta's men came to get me to take me to the president who lives not far from my residence," said Moctar Ouane in a brief telephone exchange with AFP, referring to the Malian strongman, Colonel Assimi Goïta, current vice-president of the transition.

The conversation then broke down.

Bamako was buzzing with rumours that were difficult to confirm and international missions issued messages of caution. The capital, which along with Mali saw its fourth coup since independence in August 2020, nevertheless presented an air of relative normality on Monday evening.

The events came just hours after the announcement of a new government, which is still dominated by the military, but from which officers close to the junta that took power after the August 2020 coup and of which Assimi Goïta was the leader have been removed.

After a few weeks, the colonels had installed transitional authorities, including a president, Ban Ndaw - a retired military officer - and a government led by Moctar Ouane, a civilian. They had reluctantly, and under pressure from the international community, committed themselves to handing over power to elected civilians after 18 months, not three years as they felt was necessary.

Faced with growing political and social protest, the Prime Minister resigned ten days ago and was immediately reinstated by transitional President Ndaw, with the task of forming an inclusive team.

The great unknown was the place that would be given to the military, especially those close to the former junta, and concern has grown in recent days that the colonels are not satisfied with the choices of Moctar Ouane.

In the government announced by the transitional presidency, the military still hold the ministries of Defence, Security, Territorial Administration and National Reconciliation.

But among the changes announced in a statement read on public radio and television, two members of the former junta, Colonels Sadio Camara and Modibo Kone, leave their respective portfolios of Defence and Security.

They were replaced by General Souleymane Doucoure and General Mamadou Lamine Ballo respectively.

The new government also welcomes - in Education and Land Affairs - two ministers who are members of the Union for the Republic and Democracy (URD), the main political force of the 5-June Movement (M5), the collective that led the protest that led to the overthrow of President Keita. A source close to the presidency told AFP on condition of anonymity that "this reshuffle sends a firm message that respect for the transition deadline remains the priority.

According to this source, "a readjustment was necessary in the posts of Defence and Security", whose new holders "are not emblematic figures of the junta".

In mid-April, the transitional authorities announced the organisation of a referendum on 31 October on a long-promised constitutional revision and set February-March 2022 as the date for presidential and legislative elections, at the end of which they would hand over power to civilian leaders.

Military junta in Mali has arrested President Bah Ndaw, Prime Minister Moctar Ouane and Defence minister Souleymane Doucoure of the country's interim government following a cabinet reshuffle on Monday.

"We are closely monitoring events and remain committed to supporting the transition. We call for calm and demand the immediate and unconditional release of the President and the Prime Minister. Those who hold them will have to answer for their actions," said UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

The UN peacekeeping mission further said the military must ensure the integrity of those detained.

"We are in close contact with ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) and the AU (African Union) within the framework of the local transition monitoring committee, as well as with other international actors engaged in support of the ongoing transition," MINUSMA added.

Mali's interim government resigned earlier in the month, with the country's interim President Bah Ndaw, having instructed interim PM Moctar Ouane to form a new government, Sputnik reported.

Former defense minister Bah Ndaw was then appointed to be interim president and former foreign minister Moctar Ouane became interim PM to oversee the 18-month transition period in the run-up to the new elections that will return Mali to civilian rule.

"Instability in Mali began in August of 2020 when rebels announced the arrest of then-President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse. Later, the president announced his resignation and the dissolution of the country's parliament and government," the Russian News agency said.

Meanwhile, US State Department has issued a travel alert and asked US citizens to avoid travel in the city to Bamako.

"The US Embassy has received reports of increased military activity in Bamako (Mali). US citizens are encouraged to avoid non-essential travel inside the city at this time, and monitor local media for updates," said the US Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs.

it appears 2021 is the year of coups (will update the title depending on what happens)
Anyway, the tl;dr is somewhat flexible-it appears two leaders of the previous military coup, Colonels Sadio Camara and Modibo Kone, were removed from their posts in the government, of Defense and Security a short while ago. Though the military has seized the highest actors in government, it is not currently confirmed whether or not this is a retaliatory action (my bet's on yes).
The government-in-detention had pledged to return the country to civilian control in 18 months, so it's also possible that this is an attempt to prevent this.

The UN has already called for the immediate release of President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane

This will be updated when more details become available

Abolitionism in the North has leagued itself with Radical Democracy, and so the Slave Power was forced to ally itself with the Money Power; that is the great fact of the age.

The triumph of the Democracy is essential to the struggle of popular liberty

Conspiracyyyy timeeeee:

1. This is a group of the millitary that didnt want the 2020 coup to occur in the first place and this might restore the old one
2. This is a group of millitary that were in the 2020 coup but planned to take power for a long time, and that the promise of civilian rule were lies and they were surprised when it was about to occur
3. There was NEVER supposed to be a civilian transition and this is all a psyops operation

now reminder that its 3 am and I havent eaten in 7 hours so this might seem like insane thinking but fr I think its definitely a retaliation for removing the posts of defense of security

9 years a colonel? No wonder they are all coupie should have given one a kick upstairs to brigadier in a different part of the country.
The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion … but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.

The most fundamental problem of politics is not the control of wickedness but the limitation of righteousness.

Better suggestion:

SPLIT IT.

The north belongs to the Touareg, the south to the Malinké. Kindly ask the south to give full independence to the north? It's not like that border (rawn with a colonial ruler no less) has any ethno-linguistic or historic value.

With the north gone, the south can focus on restoring civilian law.

The north can do as it pleases. Institute a council of Marabouts, if they want.

It seems I've jumped in a bit late with this trilogy, just like with many other series and franchises. But to be frank, I don't think the situation will stabilise at all seeing how there was a coup just last year. But hey it could (hopefully) turn out fine

AGAIN?! Seriously? There was coup last year, too.

The military has been trying to control Mali since the last coup. This is probably another attempt. I wonder if the coup will exacerbate the ethnic violence there.

UN Demands President and Others be Released

Here’s an idea, UN: no.

Edit: Of course, the coup was the VP’s idea. Nothing suspicious there.
