Are there autonomous areas in your nation?

Postby Kergstan » Thu May 13, 2021 8:49 am

Are there autonomous areas in your nations and do they have increased control of their internal affairs?

Kergstan has 40 provinces and 3 autonomous provinces, which are Sepalan, Pashtar-e-Teke and Druk-Saba.
All autonomous provinces have titular ethnicities, which means that despite Corandians being the relative or absolute majority in these provinces, the head of the autonomous province can be only of the titular ethnicity.

The autonomous provinces also have the right to have many other official languages along Korandili, and also have the right to teach pupils in those official languages along Korandili.

Other rights are establishing provincial holidays, keeping a greater amount of taxes within the province to pay for cultural and linguistic initiatives.

Autonomous provinces also have some rights over land rights which are usually entirely managed by the central state.

Yes. Anatoliyanskiy has one autonomous protectorate named Horastya, which is scheduled to hold an independence referendum in June. It is an island about 100 Km away from the country, and speaks a unique dialect of Russian. Its ethnic composition is as follows: Russian, 60%, Anatoliyanskiyan, 30%, Indigenous, 5%, Other, 5%.

Surdana is also expected to receive autonomous status from the Federal Government soon as well.

We have five autonomous areas. They act similar to a independant country but they can't have their own millitry and and don't have a say in economic matters. They can be wiewed on this map.

Yes, we have one autonomous province on the Kola peninsula. The province is named 'Ëisvenka' but they prefer to call themselves 'Oristoniaka.' They act hostile when facing the Narvish government.

They're basically a Narvish confederacy.

Badjuristan does, actually, have 2, But they are quite weird and forgotten about/treated as normal state by the public.
The first is the Russian Far north, A large Panhandle (about half the size of the rest of the nation) that reaches up to IRL Khazakstan, Though the Russian Far North has been owned by the Soviet Union for 40 years, Badjuristan still Claims it and pretends it's an autonomous state.

the Other is Ogurja Ada, a small Island off the coast of Badjuristan in the caspian, Which has a small population and where most rich people live. It, However, has no real autonomy, and the public just pretends its a normal state.
The Islamic Republic of Badjuristan is a Post-soviet Republic, Which is Perpetually stuck in a Notion of Racism, Sexism, Homophobia, Poverty, Homelessness, Gang Wars, Corruption, and Famine.

Every constitute-nation of the Empire is both legally part of the Empire and an independent nation simultaneously, by definition every kingdom, duchy, and march is autonomous, just fully and not ceremonially.

Yes, there is one autonomous area by the name of Trygholm. Native Clansmen who reject the modern age and all of the technology it brings are protected under the Native Land Preservation Act, designed to give Old Norse Pagans the freedom to preserve their traditions without the interference of the rest of the nation's massive push to overhaul the entire nation with novel scientific advancement. This autonomous region is located within the district of Ødemarken, off the grid at the edge of the sea touching high mountain ranges where population density is low. This district is home to the highest number of Old Norse followers within the entire nation.

This autonomous region must still follow the standard under the constitution, but is reserved the rights to:
• Reject the construction of modern technology
• Prohibit usage of modern technology within the zone
• Give the dead a traditional burial at sea
• Refuse anyone without permission to enter sacred grounds
• Refuse foreigners from entering without a district tour guide
• Live without taxation under the requirement of being completely self-sufficient

Although certain restrictions do have their limits, they are as following:
• May not secede from any of the national laws located within the constitution
• May not discriminate against AI or alien beings from entering on a tour
• May not interfere with or destroy technology misused within the zone (This must be reported)
• May not use force to eject someone breaking regulations
• Reports against technology being used (besides drones or cameras) greater than a height of 100 meters will not be valid

All of Madrinet's provinces - known as Lieutenancies - are autonomous. The voters of a Lieutenancy elect a Council to deal with "the management of the administrative and financial business" of their region. Councils set their own budgets and taxes, are responsible for their own constitutions, and manage their own judicial system; the King further requires the Councils to manage certain other things - for example, all Lieutenancies are required to provide education and healthcare facilities - but the form these take are decided by the Council. They are free to conclude treaties with other Lieutenancies and also foreign states, with the agreement of the Department of External Politics. Notably, elections are held by general popular assemblies rather than a secret ballot; the rationale being that if one is ashamed to show support for a candidate then that candidate should not be elected.

The head of the Lieutenancy Councils is the Lord Lieutenant, the King's personal representative. They are the civic heads of the Lieutenancy with a largely ceremonial function, and oversee the Council's work as chairman; they are not entitled to vote at meetings, and are restricted to "advising, encouraging, and warning" the Council on matters of policy.
Image

The Lieutenancies roughly correspond with the feudal demarcation of Madrinet prior to independence and retain their historic titles; the largest are the Archduchies (in Madrinetan, Arc-Ducats) of Anteinde, Mauvin, and Courseilles; below them are the Duchies (Ducats) of Marbeles, Merlault, and Ruellan; the three Marquisates (Marques) are new creations intended to bridge the gap between large Comarques and small Duchies, and consist of Marisco, Marzglatz-Caulmont, and Marzglatz-Baileaul; and the Counties (Comarques) of Aurives, Bethencort, Tarlenheim, Henstau, Cordiers, Montzieu, Creste, Bélogne, Everstraten, Vitroux, Aviyonne, and Harcort are the most numerous.

There are no autonomous areas in the Democratic Republic, as a unitary state, any of the limited authority the administrative divisions is given comes directly from the Forum and it can be revoked at-will the simple passing of a law.

Not yet - but a commission has been set up to prepare a constitutional change for this very purpose.

Rhynuwe has recently discovered that there is an indigenous tribe "hiding in plain sight".
We are, at least on paper, a signatory of human rights statutes for the protection of indigenous tribes and their cultures; we signed it some 75 years ago, when we still had a colonial empire and thought we could keep it if only we paid some mouth-service to all this indigenous tribes and human rights stuff.

Well, we lost the colonies anyway (and a good thing too - colonialism is a black page in our history). And the signature was still there - and we kept the on the books just to have a claim to moral probity.

And then it turned out that the fishing communities living in the very closely knit, coastal villages between our Royal city and our Capital were, actually, a very ancient people. That they had only adjusted to various cultural changes on the outside, and that their religious extremism and endogamous traditions were just a ruse to stay ethnically and culturally apart from all the rulers and nations that had usurped their lands.

And then two more areas were found with the same ethnicity: one by the coast of our largest lake, and one south of a dredged lake in the North-West. A parliamentary delegation was set up to enquire with these locals whther they consider themselves a separate, indigenous nation (yes they did) and whether they wish to form a separate province (answers are inconclusive) and whether they wish that province to have limited autonomy (no conclusions as yet).

A northern province, which holds an ethnic minority, has asked for limited autonomy as well. And then some of its islands were found to hold that same ancient ethnicity. Which would mean splitting up the province and then giving both parts limited autonomy.

Lastly, in the east, there appears to be a village or two with this ethnicity - which would not warrant a separate province, but a greater number of the indigenous tribe appears to live across the border, in a neighbouring country. We need to discuss that situation with our European partners.

Thermodolia has two fully autonomous (Commonwealths and Republics) and one semi-autonomous (States) sets of regions.

All of the below definitions are lifted from the constitution

Commonwealths shall be semi-independent administrative regions which shall have the ability to ignore parts of this constitution and federal law in accordance with their constitution, however federal courts and the Constitutional Court may impose constitutional and federal law on a commonwealth at any time. Commonwealths shall further have the power to have their own constitution and government, form their own self defense forces, have their own language, join international organizations, and have their own citizenship laws.

Currently none

Republics shall be autonomous administrative regions which shall have the authority to set up their own legal systems, national languages, religions, shall be exempt from national laws but not federal law, shall have authority over their borders, and shall have a high degree of autonomy from the federal government.

The federal government shall not alter the borders of the a republic without their explicit consent. Republics shall create their own constitution and system of democratic republican government.

Currently there are four republics

States shall be administrative regions which shall have the authority to create their own laws that are not already prohibited by national, federal, or constitutional law. States may also create their own constitution and shall not have their borders altered by the federal government without their explicit consent.

There are currently 63 states

There are two major regions within the Commonwealth that maintain significant autonomy, though it should be noted that the nation as a whole is quite decentralised.

The Central Australic Territories are the most autonomous administrative division in the Commonwealth, as well as the largest and least populated. Technically - and constitutionally - speaking, the Commonwealth shares sovereignty over the area with the Australic Aboriginal Nation, which is itself a confederation of Australic indigenous groups. The laws of the latter are considered supreme for residents, excepting if they conflict with the constitution, and a separate judicial hierarchy exists to carry out traditional justice - again, providing it is congruent with the constitution.

Aside from the C.A.T.s, the other largely autonomous region in the Commonwealth is the disputed territory of New Guinea. Due in part to both the decades of conflict over the island and the extreme terrain, it has proven thusfar unfeasible to admit the region as a regular territory or state. As such, the island has a high degree of autonomy, and much of the population of the interior still lives entirely separated and thus de-facto independent from Australia or any other state, and therefore technically not beholden to the Australic Constitution.

The North American Union consists of 49 provinces and four indigenous federalised territories. The IFTs are autonomous territories for native peoples who were recognized by treaty with the Crown to have protection from the Crown as well as autonomy in most domestic affairs while external and trade relations were handled by the Crown; these are essentially huge tracts of land set aside for native peoples for historical reasons like alliances with the British during wars. They are functionally the same as provinces but have more autonomy on domestic affairs and are less bound by domestic general-level laws and thus must harmonize domestic policy by treaty negotiation with the general government as well as by inter-provincial agreements with other provinces. IFTs are considered to have special sub-national citizenships but are considered North American nationals and protected persons.

A variant of land set aside for native peoples are the Land Grants, which are autonomous areas within provinces rather than at the provincial level. They are more subject to general-level laws than IFTs but do have autonomy for domestic affairs within provinces. They are created by treaty with the General Crown but with provincial input as well at this level. They were created as a compromise to not divide the land out west too much into many jurisdictions while also respecting native autonomy.

Since Zhouran is ethno-culturally homogeneous, there are no autonomous areas in the country. However, Zhouran is divided into five cultural regions given that each cultural region has its own unique modern subculture and identity that adds up to the "Zhouranese Identity". For example, Zhouranese people from Northern Zhouran like to joke about how they could be their own independent country simply because they're "more disciplined & hard-working" than the rest of the country, meanwhile those from South Central Zhouran joke about how they deserve autonomy simply because those from the rest of the country won't understand their "way of thinking".
