History:
Chiang Kai Shek's disastrous defeat at the hands of the Chinese communists resulted in the KMT government fleeing to Taiwan and Hainan, where they continue to hold out on their own against the PRC till this day. In 1951, Chiang's government was deposed in a coup by members of the Li military clique, composed of members of the Li familial clan and their associates. This clique has ruled the tiny republic with an iron fist ever since, and continued with the statist economic policies of Chiang Kai Shek while merging them with the conservative Confucian ideals of the initial Republican movement to create a nation conservative in almost all aspects.
RP Example(s):
The city of Guangzhou. Birthplace of the nationalist movement. Home of the heroes of the revolution. And now --- all that the party had left in its control.
The streets of Guangzhou had for the past 3 decades known nothing but violence and brutality. In 1928, when Chiang Kai Shek had consolidated his control over the city with his nationalist government, an iron hammer fell upon the opponents of the conservative wing of the KMT within the city, leading to brutal purges and public executions. In 1942, as the forces of the Empire of Japan grew ever closer to the city, martial law the likes of which the nation had never seen before was declared in it; every street, every corner, every building had an NRA soldier in it.
But this time it was different. This time, it wasn't the authoritarian grip of the KMT that was slowly suffocating the residents of Guangzhou. It was the chaos, and the unrest and uncertainty; a far cry from what the city had seen before.
The communists were coming, that was the word on the street. Chiang's last good Marshal had been defeated just to the North, and now the Guomindang were in full retreat. The President himself was nowhere to be found, as thousands upon thousands of soldiers and civilians crowded around the government district looking for answers; while thousands more cramped into the docks, seeking boats to take them to the new destination. Some headed off to Taiwan. Others to Hainan.
Dozens of miles away, on the island of Taiwan, a man stood on the balcony of his villa at the peak of a hill, staring out onto the horizon with binoculars. He was in full uniform, and did not move much. Suddenly, a figure approached him from behind, a bunch of papers in his hand. He leaned down towards the man's ear.
"President, sir. Operation White Sun is a go."
