The Black devils, consisting of 40 Eland 90s, 20 Eland 60s, and their 10 T-55sAM-1s join a convoy of RLI APCs, Mostly MAP-75s leading a few M113s, down the main service road to the boarder check point at Machipanda. Over them, 4 Mirage Fighters screamed low overhead, escorting 6 English Lightning fighters.
This formation, Known as Switchbale, flew like this for some time before arriving over the ZAF HQ at Maputo. Slung on the wings of the lightnings were a mix of 1,000 pound cratering bombs and a pair of HE-fragmentation bombs.
Lined up on the runway sat Mozambique’s sole fighter wing comprised of 18 MIG-21s and around the same number of MIG-17s and MIG-15s. The F-1s circled high, flying over watch for their brothers and sisters down below. The Lightnings screamed in fast and low, dropping their bombs along the lit runway and scoring several hits and putting the runway out of action. The parked migs didn’t fair any better, being blown to pieces by a combination of bombs and 30mm strafing runs.
A battery of ZSU-23s began to fire wildly in to the night, the lack of radar or night sights meaning their fire was ineffective, and they were quickly silenced by 30mm strafing rungs. Choosing to be thorough the reading party then focused on the air facilities it self, fuel tanks, tracking stations and other equipment, razing them with their remaining bombs and cannon rounds before their control bird, the E-2 Hawkeye, notified them of a radar spike coming from the Nouth.
Choosing now to leave, the entire flight turned, formed up, and made for the boarder. As they flew home, they passed the Hawkeye and its two F-1 escorts being refueled by a KC-130 while below them, a pair of Hind-Ds escorted a set of UH-1s and Alouette IIIs carrying a force of men at arms.
These were the men of the No. 1 Commando, Rhodesian Special Air Service and their mission was paramount. Their destination: Beira.
