Would you like to order in for every meal?

Postby Luziyca » Sun Apr 18, 2021 9:08 pm

As someone whose family frequently orders in food, I have been thinking about this scenario for a long time, because my cooking skills are at best, microwave or oven-tier, my mother's cooking skills leave a lot to be desired (though slightly better than mine), and my dad is not always in the mood to do the cooking. Should I improve them? Definitely. But that's irrelevant for the scenario.

Without any further discussion, NSG, my question to you is would you like to order in for every meal?

Basically, every time you want something to eat, you order in some food, full stop, and for the sake of this scenario, let's assume you have an account with infinite money that can only be spent on food, and said food can be delivered to you (from the nearest major city). As for the food in your fridge/freezer/where-ever that exists right now, well, I suppose whenever you try and cook you is moldy, tastes shit, and well, unappetizing.

Personally, I'd probably do so under such a scenario: given that if I have enough money to order in whatever I want, I would likely do so, because the food is delicious, and is often better than what I can make. If I want a light snack, I could just order that, and it'd get here whenever. Plus, if I'm tired of a certain location, I can always order in from somewhere else. Plus, I'd be able to support the local economy without leaving my house.

ewww no, why would I want to eat crummy takeout food for the rest of my life? As a person that can cook I can tell you that unless Im at an established dine-in restaurant my cooking is way better than whatever fast-food or delivery place can make.

With more food delivery services thanks to the pandemic, I actually am ordering in more than I usually do. Sure, my family still cooks now and then, and recently (like yesterday and today), we got homecooked pasta! ^^

However, there were those days when you are just craving outside food, and it really does help satisfy your craving. I knew I got a few excellent Japanese bento sets, prata, and chicken biryanis (Indian curried rice, more or less) thanks to me exploring a lot of options.

And yes, given where I am at, fast food isn't too bad and I actually like eating it in moderation.

I would absolutely love to do this but I'm in a situation where groceries are already paid for and can't afford to dine out as much as I would. If I had the means, I would order in, but not just at fast food unless I had the cravings for it or on the road.

Certainly: if I did actually cook the way my late grandma taught me, instead of letting that skill rot, then I'd honestly have answered no to my question, because I'd have the skills to make great food. Plus, there's nothing quite like an occasional homemade sandwich (peanut butter and nutella).

It does satisfy the craving: there are some times that I crave something that I have not had in a long while, and if they're available, great, I can satisfy the craving with said food.

And yeah, there will be this one or two things that I would never order, because I know homecooked is always the best. Case in point, the tomato pasta that me and my family ate together! ^^

For the others, like the aforementioned foodstuffs, no harm in trying to cook them, but you are mostly better off ordering because if they turn out a little cold, at least they are reheat-able and will be delicious, just the way they cooked it.

My parents tried cooking biryani and fried rice a few times. Ahh... doesn't really work.

Hmm.. I wonder which is more sustainable, for everyone to order in or to cook at home. I suppose all the packaging, bags and transport is a detraction but you gain the power of volume and efficiency.

However personally I really like cooking, I grow certain things like onions and chillis on my patio, I buy from markets so I feel that's more sustainable than ordering in all the time.

Cooking is easy, especially given online recipes.

I suppose it depends on where you order, too. I am not making off Singapore to be like this haven of flawless delivery meals, but 9 out of 10 times it's a hit.

And yes, that 1 out of 10 times... there is this thing that I either regretted ordering, and even more of a regret with eating it. I err... yuck, is the best way to put it.

As for cooking, I need a recipe for my Burmese-style biryani. I ain't talking about the ones I can find on Google; there is this particular place I ordered from, but it was a rare occurrence because of availability.

I don't know if SG is like HK, where you can't buy a normal bag of rice, you can only buy extended family packets of rice you need a wheelbarrow to get home.

If I want rice I pop to the local restaurant and order as required, so to that extent I do often order in but it's for a good reason.

Ahh... you could get some cooked rice, but I usually order it as extra rice on top of some food item I am getting. So Japanese Cuisine + Extra bag of rice.

Grocery delivery services are another thing, but that was for bags of uncooked rice.

That is an incredibly good question: it probably depends on where the ingredients ultimately comes from, and whether if everyone cooks at home they get the ingredients on foot, by bus, by car, or where have you. Getting the ingredients at a farmer's market in Amsterdam and cooking at home would probably be far more sustainable than ordering in there, but in a city like Anchorage, where most things have to be imported from a long ways away anyway, and where it seems to be very car-centric, everyone ordering in probably is slightly less environmentally sustainable than everyone cooking at home, though if we factor in volume and efficiency, it might be slightly better?

So, if you agree to this offer... any food you put in your fridge or freezer will immediately go off? And all the fresh veggies in your wire-racks? And the cans and basics in your cupboards? Even the milk for your hot drinks, rancid?

Take-out is full of fat, sugar and salt when compared to a home-cooked meal; the texture never seems to be as good, you can be waiting ages for it to arrive, and -- if you're me -- you have to just trust the takeaway place that it's gluten-free (and half the time, it's not).

I think I'll decline and continue to buy my own food and cook it. A life without fresh, home-cooked food sounds rather unappetising.

I kind of have been, it has its downsides. I might be getting sick of it but now I have to overcome laziness.

I will admit I have not thought that completely through, but I feel that for the sake of this, beverages are exempt.

But first, it'll be unappetizing for you to eat them, then they go off because you've let them sit for too long... and well, yeah.

Cooking at the end of a long, grueling day, is often what I do to de-stress. I rarely, if ever, order food, when I do its usually because I'm sick or too busy to leave my desk.

I've noticed that the last two lots of people renting the house next to mine, never cooked and subsisted entirely on fast food. Personally I almost never eat fast food, and I enjoy cooking, so it would not be my choice. I think it will be a sad loss if cooking becomes something only a few people know how to do. It will likely also make it harder for those of us still cooking to get hold of fresh ingredients.

No way! All that takeout food is pretty mediocre (I can think of at most five dishes from out that I could eat regularly), never gonna be hot like something fresh out of a home kitchen, and the freedom you get with cooking your own meals is a lot of fun. Just take courage and follow recipes from online and you'll get the hang of it eventually. :)

Once in a while I like to cook. Also I would feel weird ordering an Orange or a beer. And I would want that orange or beer sooner than 20 minutes.

otoh meals would be more varied and especially for Thai or Chinese cooking, better than what I can get at home, and no washing pots and pans.

I dunno.

Nah. Food I make is generally better than that I can get delivered - except for some preparations, like pizza, which I can't do at home.

I know of some really good places to eat in the local area here so I'm going to have to say yes. I know I'd eat a crazy amount of seafood (and kinda already do) but there isn't many days that go by where I'm not either craving sushi or calamari... Only difference is now it can be professionally made and delivered right to my door whenever I want!

Given you never know when you may end up in a situation where you can't order in, it's always good to learn how to cook.

Personally I enjoy cooking, and I also find being able to cook well is one way to impress someone. I've already earned some good points with my girlfriend's parents and I haven't even met or spoken with them yet.

I'm also lazy though, so I probably order more often than I should.
