Addressing Food DesertsCategory: Health| Area of Effect: International Aid
Applauding previous efforts by the General Assembly, via The Food Welfare Act, to increase access to nutritious and healthy foods for malnourished and poor individuals and communities,
Recognizing that the aforementioned piece of legislation fails to address the issue of food deserts, a major impediment to progress in the fair distribution of foods,
Affirming that this is a problem that must be addressed with an eye for the countless unfortunate peoples who are malnourished or lack access to healthy and nutritious foods,
Hoping that addressing food deserts will make progress towards the overall resolution of global hunger,
The World Assembly therefore:
I. Defines:
- A food desert as an inhabited area with limited or no access to healthy and/or affordable foods for its residents
II. Mandates that the IFWO (International Food Welfare Organization) establish a metric for determining the sites of food deserts, and log and record these instances in the Food Desert Registry (FDR), a database to be created by this act,
III. Requires the IFWO to attempt to curb the impact of food deserts in member states through the establishment of food pantries and emergency kitchens in impoverished areas and nations, as well as the direct distribution of food to those residing in food deserts, where appropriate,
IV. Requires all member states who are financially able to combat food deserts through their own means in addition to efforts from the World Assembly,
V. Encourages member states to legislate financial aid for residents who may need it to obtain healthy and affordable foods,
