What is your general ideology? (read more before voting)

Postby Sanlibutan » Fri Mar 12, 2021 1:45 am

Skip the paragraphs below to get to the simple definitions if tl;dr.

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in. Apologies in advance if it isn't. It is not my intention to be a burden here.

I am interested in creating a (fictional) nation (almost) entirely based off the political opinions of denizens of the Internet. I have not really tried something like this before to this extent, so I am curious if it can manage to help create something stranger than anything I could think of. This nation would serve to be a competitor to the nation I am currently working on (Sanlibutan) — to be its foil maybe, or merely a geographic neighbour.

Obviously, asking people their opinions on every topic, especially the Issues on NationStates would be an extreme undertaking. Instead, I desire only to get the most basic of an idea of what ideologies people hold. I am not a statistician and this is not an exercise in science. No attempt at accurately collecting the views of everyone on the Internet is intended. If anything, haphazard collection is best.

Given I find NationStates a useful tool in creating experimental fictional states, I think it would be good to start by asking the people here — given I suspect they probably hold quite a manner of idiosyncratic ideologies. To make things simple (although you are of course free to provide comment), I think doing a poll is best.

The ideologies listed below are defined for clarity. It's okay if you have a different definition or outright reject the definition I provide, but please still vote according to the definitions I provide regardless. They are not defined as a way to say "this is how they actually are" but rather to avoid at least some amount of ambiguity. Also, it's okay to vote for two ideologies that are seemingly contradictory to each other. The system I have made for them is designed to handle contradiction. Now, let's get to the definitions applicable to the poll...

Socialism: The means of production are owned and/or managed collectively by society

Republicanism: The citizenry elects their own representatives to serve in government office

Liberalism: All citizens are treated equally under the law and individual freedom is respected

Internationalism: The nation seeks out friendship, cooperation, and integration with the world

Environmentalism: The natural environment is preserved and under protection from non-sustainable exploitation

Capitalism: Market forces dominate the economy and property rights are protected

Conservatism: Traditional values, social hierarchies, especially those pertaining to the family, are upheld and/or enforced by society

Authoritarianism: The government is granted extensive powers to limit political opposition and/or exert its influence in the private affairs of citizens

Nationalism: The national interest and needs of the people are strongly prioritized over foreign interests

Productivism: The natural world, including its physical and genetic resources, is intensely exploited and is used to generate economic prosperity

You don't have to vote for two ideologies, you can also just vote for one if that fits you best.

Although I am critical of all ideologies, I voted for liberalism because I believe in personal, political and financial freedom based on a democratic, just society.

Environmental Socialism. I believe we need a world where resources are shared equitably and in a balanced, sustainable manner that won't reduce earth to a wasteland.

Productivism doesn't constitute an ideology. It's a belief, sure, but it doesn't really meet the threshold of being an ideology as such.

more or less, it can be defined as "anti-environmentalism", or an opposition to protecting the environment.

Add an option for Anarchism, or at the bare minimum Libertarianism- Liberalism in my eyes does not go far enough in encompassing individual liberty and freedoms.

that does make sense. Id recommend replacing productivism with anarchism or libertarianism.

Liberalism.

Also "republicanism" if we go by the OP's definition, which would make the United Kingdom a "republic".

Possibly "conservatism", specifically the bit about "preserving traditional values". I consider liberal values to be "traditional". Liberalism's been around for centuries.

But liberalism supersedes everything else and I would describe it as my overarching worldview and the very foundation of my political identity.

Indeed. With regards to liberalism, I regard it more as an ideology committed to the maintenance of the status quo nowadays. Libertarianism and anarchism go much further in the direction of preserving individual liberties and freedoms than contemporary liberalism ever could.

Choosing from the list, I'd say I'm Capitalist, Conservative and Authoritarian. Something similar about my IRL views I'm a center-right or moderate conservative on political and social issues, approve of Capitalism on economics, and sometimes I can be a bit Authoritative... At times...

Don't be silly people. Just because an entity has those two words in its name doesn't make them those things. Is North Korea "democratic"? It's the Democratic People's Republic, no? Is the Chinese Communist Party truly communist? No. The same thing applies here.

Liberalism and environmentalism. I don't have a nation that represents my political views yet, but I might create one soon.
Controlled by the same player who controls The Allied Tribe.

I'm not as active as I used to be (probably active once every 3-7 days) as I'm spending a lot more time on more important things. This has nothing to do with why I'm not as active, but I'm sad because a lot of ideas I thought of but never used in an F7 thread (e.g. the life simulator and make a multiverse) were used. Next time I think of something I should probably use it immediately instead of waiting a few months and having somebody else take it.

This is the eighth line. If your signature is longer than mine, it's too long. (including spaces)

Im a Democratic Socialist and an Irish Nationalist. Irish Nationalism is a predominantly left-wing strand of nationalist belief based on popular sovereignty and self determination. And in Northern Ireland, where im from, it is characterised with a struggle for civil rights and equality under the law after facing decades of discrimination based on ethnicity, national identity and religion.
