It takes so much courage to be honest with one's self about your feelings. Anyone who identifies as LGBT has my respect on those grounds alone, man. Given how hard life is for everyone that's a huge step that sets the tone for how a person lives their life.

I think the rise in identification has a lot to do with it being more accepted by society as a whole.

I noticed that a lot of gays in the US media happen to be minorities as well. I'm starting to think there's an intricate plot by neo-Nazi engineers and politicians to sterilize the ever-growing non-WASP community from ever surpassing the Old Stock demograph. The US Gov has a history of sterilizing Native American women, along with the deportation of citizens of Mexican descent, not to forget how Japanese-descent folks were sent to camps. Given how often the WASP-dominated Conservative media lumps minorities with the LGBT, I'd say they're doing it for a reason: They WANT every non-white to be gay, therefore unwilling to breed.
