At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, every state and territory agreed to pay for their residents to quarantine in other states (that was before every individual had to pay their own way). New South Wales has taken in most of the overseas arrivals into Australia, as such most money is owed to NSW. However, as Queensland had a dispute with the federal government about quarantining people in Toowoomba, QLD has renigged on the agreement and failed to pay their $30 million debt to NSW. QLD deputy premier, Steven Miles, took it one step further and actually tore the bill, uploaded it to the publically accessable internet and has since encouraged Queenslanders to print a copy and destroy that copy. The NSW treasurer has responded by telling anyone who wants an interstate holiday to instead travel to Adelaide (South Australia) or Hobart (Victoria). Every other state who has been billed so far has paid.

Here's my thoughts on the matter;
1. New South Wales=/=The federal government. The NSW has no more authority of the feds than what you do. Your beef is with the feds, not the state
2. NSW has taken in your residents and thus has taken the risk of quarantining themin Sydney, risking an outbreak here, whilst sending them back to Queensland squeaky clean. Pay your damned bill like you promised you would!
3. This is a very immature way to act. I don't care whether or not you agree with paying this bill, there are mature ways of handling it. As a senior politician in charge of the country's third largest state by population, growing and stop acting like a 5 year old brat

Anyway, that's my 2 cents, what do you think NSG?

I'd say the matter of who should pay for it should ultimately come down to which government ordered the quarantine. Did Queensland lock its own people out and leave them for NSW to deal with, or did NSW lock the door and tell the Queenslanders that they can't leave, or was this some coordinated interstate/federal policy?

None of the above. The federal government ordered the quarantine. Since then, most international flights carrying residents from all over Australia have landed in Sydney, New South Wales, where they were forced immediately into quarantine at the state government's expense. As NSW was taking in the bulk of the quarantine, it meant that NSW was taking in the bulk of international flights. International flights contained people from all over the country, paid for by the state of NSW

In that case, I say the feds should be footing the entire bill, not "each state pay for your own people".

NSW and Qld should act like the big states they are, and agree to split the bill ...

...between Tassie and SA.
