The Center of Politics

Postby Infected Mushroom » Mon Jan 25, 2021 9:55 pm

Please consider the following hypothetical:

You are a minor noble in the hierarchy of the Empire. You have some lands and some titles and you live comfortably on a big estate in the countryside. You are respected in your community and the commoners In the area consider you to be a person of honor.

However, in the grand hierarchy of the Empire, you’re a small player. You have no influence at court where the big decisions are made (in fact, you never go to the capital except occasionally) and if push comes to shove, you can’t even put together a proper army. Your province is small and on the remote side of things.

One day, after a power shuffle in the capital, you are given a rare opportunity to move to the royal court and hold a medium level ministerial position. Although it’s not yet at the very top, there are opportunities here to amass power and profit and possibly even command the ear of the Emperor.

However, you have heard about the capital. Being the center of power, the royal court Is notorious for being a place of politics, backstabbing, deal-making, intrigue, and sometimes lethal falls from power. One of your uncles in the past was invited to the capital for such a job... when things suddenly went south and he was standing in the wrong camp, he was executed... and that was only five years ago.

The current emperor is strong and skillful with lots of allies. However, he can also be moody and rapidly order people executed on false charges. There’s several camps and cliques of powerful nobles who consistently plot and play the line.

Do you accept the offer and travel to the capital to play a high stakes game of politics?

Or is it a better fit for your personality to stay in the province where things are more simple/familiar and safe?

Do you want to expand your power and influence? Do you want to try and shape national policy for the greater good/the good of your house? Or are you content?

Please choose and justify.

Given the capital’s reputation and my generally non social personality, I would probably stay and not go to the capital. In a game of politics I wouldn’t last long.

I would travel to the capital to fight for reforms based around Healthcare and gender equality and then after five years I would abdicate the throne and transition the country to a Republic (as opposed to a constitutional monarchy) and go to being a private citizen.

Why would I do this? Because leadership shouldn't be hereditary. It should be earned, and someone else deserves the chance to earn leadership in the country.

GMS: I Posted this Post in the wrong thread by accident.

A Few Excerpts:
Breaking ‘Unity’ Pledge, Joe Biden Backs Trump Impeachment Trial

but said he doesn’t think 17 Republican senators will vote to convict Trump.

I always knew the unity talk is just political talk. There is no such thing as unity with the Leftist Liberal Democrats in Congress. GMS.

I travel to court to act as adviser to the king, and then when I discover that the queen was involved in the conspiracy that assassinated him and her children are not his, but the result of an incestuous union with her brother, I meet her in a garden where I explain to her that I'm on to her, and then cut her head off with my greatsword and throw her children into the dungeons. Then I reveal that my "bastard son" is actually my nephew, child of my sister who had secretly married the previous king, and thus the legitimate heir to the throne, and invite his aunt to return from her exile overseas and reign alongside him. And to bring any dragons she might have with her.

I'm moving to the capital to improve national policy and gain more land to farm for revenue. The revenue will be used to increase the size of my army and to invest in military technology.

Go to the capital and play politics Machiavellian-style. I may have to sacrifice some of my principles but so long as I get my favorite reforms done I have no qualms.

Feudal society is mostly about land and fortifications so I think that after my move to the castle the house I belong to would have a lot of influence over national policy proposals. My ministerial position would only last as long as I live but wealth can last generationally.

If you move up the capital and do well, the influence of your house and estates could increase by a lot

How good are you at court politics though?

This seems like a terrible idea, I’m not risking my neck to be Minister of Fisheries or whatever, especially if I’m living comfortably in a nice house in the countryside surrounded by people who like me

Well, politics is a tool. If I seek good ends through good means justice will be done. It sounds like, in your example, that there are criminals within the King's court. The King himself might be a criminal.

It sounds as if I have a pretty ideal existence as it is, so I think I'll stay put.

Also, watch in wonder as NSers prove that they have no idea how pre-modern societies actually functioned.

I am not skilled in Political intrigue enough to last in a Game of Thrones/House of Cards style capital, so I'm staying in my lands and just will make the lives of my people better and try to get the good graces of the Emperor through warfare. Perhaps he'll recognize me that way after I help win a big battle or siege and he'll give me more titles/land. I know it would be a much longer route to power but I prefer it over whatever hellscape the capital is.
