2021: A New Decade

Image

OOC|Discord: Coming soon|Map: Coming soon

The 2020s. A decade set to be nightmarish and a turning point in the history of humanity. Climate Change is the existential threat that must urgently be tackled in this decade, and humanity must learn to cope with the constantly growing population that does not look likely to slow down let alone stop growing anytime soon.

In Asia, the Chinese Dragon is emerging as the regional hegemon, pushing regional nations to choose sides between them and the West while internally the regime battles against resistance in Hong Kong and ethnic tension in the far West. In India, the nation is dealing with religious unrest and rapid economic growth and modernization as well as increasing tension along the border with Pakistan, particularly in the Kashmir Region.

In Europe, Euroskepticism is on the rise in many European nations. The successful Brexit referendum led the charge showing Euroskeptics all across the continent that leaving was possible. In Spain regional tensions threaten to explode between Madrid and Barcelona.

In the Middle East, tensions between Israel and Iran are at an all-time high. Adding to this is the emerging regional cold war between Saudi Arabia and Iran. In Yemen, the civil war still burns as a testing ground for this regional cold war.

In Africa, ethnic and religious tensions pose a danger all over the continent. In the Congo, warlords fight over land and resources like coltan offering fortunes on the international market. In the Saraha and Sahel regions, remnants of ISIS and other organizations ravage the land and people. Yet there are lights of hope that still sparkle.

In North America, Canada is dealing with ever-increasing political divides much like the US to the South. Inside the US tensions between Republicans and Democrats have never seemed worse. In Mexico, the Cartels fight hard against the central government in Mexico City their corruption touches most parts of the nation.

In Latin America, the dictator Nicholas Maduro still clings to power even as his position is contested by Juan Guaidó. In Colombia, an unstable peace agreement official holds peace between the government and FARC.

How will the nations of the world tackle these issues? How will their pasts define their future, which nations will come out on top during this decade, and how will future generations remember this critical decade?

In this roleplay, you will take the helm of the nation of your choice. You have the ability to change the history of your nation from 1991 onwards within realism and with a few major event exceptions as well as anything states in the OP or other applications.

Major Unchangeable Events:

Fall of the USSR as a Communist state

Parliament Majority Leader Christos Ferentinos On Spending, Elections

Image

Parliamentary Majority Leader Christos Ferentinos (National Hope) commands six out of the ten MPs in the parliament. He led National Hope, Gavdos' conservative party, into a victory in the 2019 parliamentary elections, ending eight years of Liberal majority. His main campaign promises were to prevent any new taxes and oppose Gadvos' possible entry in the EU. In the 2021 presidential elections, though, held on January 1st, Nikos Romanos, candidate of the Liberal Alliance, won the presidency, ending five years of National Hope's hold of the presidency.

Now Christos Ferentinos has two worries: how to work with a President from the opposing party and how to prepare for the May parliamentary elections. "I can work with the President," Ferentinos told our reporter. "As long as no new tax is imposed and he does not seek to force us into the EU, we can compromise on other issues, such as spending." Feredinos was thus giving a nod to the President's infrastructure plans. "I will have to look into the details of the plan, but yes, we can certainly work with the President on updating our infrastructure."

Asked about the elections, he replied: "I do not think that the presidential elections are necessarily an indication of what will happen in the parliamentary elections. Mr. Romanos' victory was a close one and I do not think most Gavdians want to give him a Liberal majority in parliament. Most people will want National Hope to retain its majority in order to act as a check to the President and steer him in a more centrist direction. Gavdians oppose new taxes and entry into the EU, so we should do just fine in the upcoming elections and retain our majority."

Pressed about the presidential elections, he stated: "Our defeat was because of Mr. Alexiandres' [National Hope's presidential candidate] bad debate performance, which caused a minor swing that was enough to deliver the victory to Mr. Romanos. I do not think this indicates a condemnation of conservatism. Look at the numbers; despite that debate performance, Mr. Alexiandres managed to attain 49% of the vote; people recognized he was a good candidate and that conservatism is the key to our prosperity."

Parliament Minority Leader Vasilis Leventis On Elections

Image

Vasilis Leventis (Liberal Alliance) has been Parliament Minority Leader since 2019, leading the opposition to the National Hope. With the Liberal Alliance, Gavdos' centrist party, winning the presidency, it now looks possible that he could attain the office of Parliament Majority Leader if the May parliamentary elections confirm the swing to the Liberals. "We won the presidential elections because people were sick of the status quo. I believe we can repeat this victory on the parliamentary elections' ballot. People want change, and for the President to be able to upend the status quo, he must have a working majority in the parliament."

Asked about the National Hope victory in 2019, he stated: "In 2019 we lost because the people thought that National Hope couldn't turn things around because they lacked a parliamentary majority. Well, after 2019 National Hope had both the presidency and a majority in parliament and didn't do anything with it; so they lost the presidency and now they are going to lose their parliamentary majority."

Vasilis Leventis belongs to the center-left wing of the Liberal Alliance, and has been pushing for tax reform and more ambitious welfare and infrastructure spending. It remains to be seen if his progressive message can turn things around; so far, in polls, National Hope is at 53% as opposed to Liberal Alliance's 47%. "I don't worry about the polls," Leventis assured us. "I worry about getting our message across to the people of Gavdos. We are going to win this!"

21 January 2021
Washington D.C.
United States

It was Roland Wilkerson’s first official day as President of the United States and already he had a lot on his plate. The Forces Cooperation Agreement between the US and the USSR was due for renegotiation and the Soviets were making noises about not renewing it without a demonstration of commitment from the West. The trade war with the Chinese was continuing to hurt US jobs. The peace deal with the Taliban was not making the headway many had hoped it would. And the nearly four months of riots in the summer of 2020 had shone a spotlight on the issues of police use of force in many cities around the United States. And then there was the laundry list of campaign promises that Wilkerson had made. Statehood for several US territories, expanding US energy independence, reforming the criminal justice system, repairing US relations with foreign allies, and strengthening the United States in cooperation with its neighbors.

Wilkerson leaned back in his chair behind the Resolute Desk and rubbed his eyes. It had all sounded so simple as he made the promises on the campaign trail. Even when he’d known that his promises would be difficult to implement, he’d been surprised by how easy they sounded when he spoke them aloud. Statehood for Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands sounded incredibly easy but required broad support in Congress and the cooperation of the territorial governments to reorganize them into proper states. Special elections would need to be held to elect Senators and Representatives from those states and renovations made to the Capitol Building to provide them places to sit during debates and votes and offices from which to work. And yet none of that came to mind when you just voiced the idea of statehood.
Of course, Wilkerson was certain he could get enough support in Congress for Guam and Puerto Rico to become states. There was enough support in both territories for that change to justify it. But that would then also require an actual discussion about statehood for D.C. and he wasn’t sure he could get enough support for that one. Even if he could, it would be a hard won fight that would require enough compromises that he might not be able to get other things passed. And there was everything else he wanted to do.
Criminal Justice Reform was something that was sorely needed, especially in the light of events from the previous administration.

Wilkerson sat up abruptly. That’s it, he thought. Criminal Justice Reform was the one thing that most Americans could agree upon and it was something that he could already start on. The House had passed a Marijuana decriminalization bill back in December but he could get out ahead of this thing and make waves immediately with an executive order. He drafted two orders. One would order all Federal law enforcement officers and Federal judges and attorneys to ignore marijuana possession, sale, distribution, and transportation when seeking to charge offenders. The other would commute the sentences of prisoners who had been convicted of possessing or trafficking marijuana. This wouldn’t free that many people, since it would only really impact federal agencies. But, hopefully, it would get the ball rolling and encourage Congress to make progress on decriminalization legislation. Simultaneously, it would start progress on one of his campaign promises.

He sat back again after having written the orders to consider other needed tasks. The Status of Forces Agreement with the USSR which governed US and USSR force interactions and their cooperation in the War on Terror was due for renegotiation this year and his predecessors had done their damndest to piss the Soviets off in that regard. The Soviet Ambassador had made sure a letter was presented to him on this, his first day on the job, clarifying the Soviet position that the US force drawdowns in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other hotspots were violations of the Agreement and indicated a lack of commitment from the United States to ending the threat of global terrorism. Or something roughly to that effect. He thought for a moment. The first step would definitely need to be a propaganda effort. Something to show both the American and Soviet peoples that they were still like minded and friendly nations. A series of meetings with the Soviet president would serve that end nicely and would let Wilkerson get the measure of the man. It had been Wilkerson’s experience that the only way one could ever know if a person was indeed trustworthy was to meet them in person in an informal setting. A relaxed individual was more honest than one who knew that eyes rested upon them.

He leaned forward and typed out a brief letter inviting the Soviet president to Washington for preliminary talks. With any luck, he could salvage the relationship with the Soviets without creating a political situation that was untenable. But, then again, luck wasn’t known for being a reliable ally.

Kabul River
Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan
22nd January 2021

Approximately two dozen military aged males walked along a dirt path towards the Kabul River. The men wore the typical garb of Afghan tribesmen, distinguished only by their heavy armament. RPGs, AKs, RPKs, and RPDs were slung over their shoulders. Grenades, magazines, and ammunition belts were carried over their shoulders or clipped to harnesses. From ground level, they would be difficult to see in the darkness. But to the thermal imaging camera of the Avenger drone 10,000 meters above them, they were as clear as if they were standing in an open field.

The drone’s pilot tracked the column as they continued walking along the path and determined that the column was likely headed for the Darunta Dam. If they made it, they would probably attempt to damage the dam, cutting power to several villages and cities, including Jalalabad. A request was sent up the chain for clearance to engage. It took nearly half an hour for a decision to be made, with the pilot tracking the column the entire time. They were barely a mile and a half from Darunta when clearance was received.

To the Afghan men walking down the path, nothing was out of the ordinary. The cool, night air was still, without so much as a breeze to ruffle their traditional Perahan tunban dress. Even if they had looked up, they would not have seen the drone as it circled overhead, even now making the final preparations for its attack.

The Avenger’s internal weapons bay swung open and a pair of GBU-53/B Small Diameter Bombs glided silently towards their unsuspecting victims. All twenty four of these men had families. Mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, wives, sons and daughters. The drone pilot understood this but the drone didn’t not and the two bombs wouldn’t have cared even if they could know.

The bombs silently crossed the twenty kilometer horizontal distance between the drone and their target in a matter of moments. The bombs struck home with thunderous explosions that shook the immediate area.

In the air conditioned container that served as the drone’s control center, a soft voice spoke for the first time in over thirty minutes. “Positive impact. Stand-by BDA.” The drone circled back around as the smoke cleared. The same voice, soft and measured, “No heat signatures. All targets eliminated. No collateral.” With a final confirmation from headquarters, Lieutenant Grace Anderson studied the effects of her work from the safety of an air conditioned trailer on the other side of the world.

Rome,Italy
Office of the Prime Minister, Italian Parliament Building

Prime Minister Matteo Salvini is going over paperwork concerning NATO, The EU and the USSR. In the years following the 2008 Financial Crisis, the Italian people grew very Euroskeptic almost to the point that in next few years, his fellow citizens will be wanting to leave the EU like the UK did. While was still friendly with its fellow European allies, the one nation it distance itself from was Germany. Italy became very close friends with the UK, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and The USSR.

22nd of January
Berlin, Germany

It was an election year and in the parlance of German politics that would have meant a shifting of the dynamics between parties, as well as a new round of faces in the upper realms of German politics. Alas, that was the case this year. While Chancellor Lindner was still running on the FDP's ticket, President Schulz was not running on the SDP's ticket this year, with his planned replacement being Olaf Scholz. Amidst the planning for the elections this year, there was also the typical long term planning and idealism that was characteristic of many nations around the world. But one sore thumb stuck out amidst this field of idealistic dreams and plans; Italy and its Euroscepticism.

Brexit in many cases had silenced and even killed off Euroscepticism in many countries as they saw the effects that leaving the EU had on the UK. In many ways it was a vindicating feeling for Berlin and Brussels; the thought that the cold hard evidence would be a sufficient dissuasion. Alas, they were wrong. While Eurpscepciticism had certainly been dealt an existential blow by Brexit, the EU's policies in the wake of the 2008 economic crisis still fostered resentment from many. Whoever ended up being the next leader of Germany would have to deal with these issues without turning the EU into a raging dumpster fire. Some in the German government and among its political society had begun to wonder if enforcing the German Model all over Europe was causing the damage; others merely implied that the damage was caused by the local governments and that the German Model was the solution.

The FDP and especially Chancellor Lindner had been quite open to alternatives in terms of Germany's policy within the EU and outside of it. In many ways, they were a government more willing to experiment in forging new alliances; akin in some ways to Willy Brandt and his Ostpolitik. But one thing had especially troubled Lindner during his tenure of chancellor. It was the EU's inability to take a unified stance on many issues because of the union's divisions. At times Lindner would say privately that if he could, he would dissolve the EU for a month and show the more rebellious nations of the EU the pain they would endure without the EU. But that all was the late-night musings of the chancellor. Just like the far-out idea of reclaiming Königsberg.

Whatever the year ahead may hold, Germany and its government were going to try their hardest to maintain the status quo and improve the world. That was practically the EU's unofficial mission statement and as the de facto leader of the EU, it was Germany's job to enforce the status quo without alienating other member nations, or allies.

Snapping out of his semi-daze, Lindner took another glance over at the paperwork at his desk and sighed. The typical budget report fluff of what the expenditures were, the lower budgetary surplus but how that was a good thing, in this case, the improvements in infrastructure, etc. With a sigh, he looked over some intelligence reports and then began to read a newspaper on his computer. Scanning over the headlines he merely rolled eyes before taking a glance at his watch. It was an oddly silent day, suspiciously so.

15th January
London, United Kingdom

It had been barely two weeks since the end of 'Brexit' and the flames in London still hadn't gone out. There had always been a sense of 'conflict' between those wishing to Remain with the European Union and those whom had wished to Leave the European Union. Although when the clock in 'Great' Britain had struck 00:00 on the last few seconds of New Year...it was like someone had detonated bombs all across Britain...as the worst that had been predicted by many 'dismissed' experts had come true. Overnight, everything had gone wrong in the most horrible way possible: trucks had been literally stopped near the border, vital trucks that had once constantly carried necessary supplies like medicine, food and other essential goods to and from Europe and the United Kingdom. This had caused a sudden shock for many stores all over the Isles - as many businesses were told that their 'goods' wouldn't be arriving on time or likely even in the upcoming week itself. This caused an artificial shortage - when the BBC reported the rows upon rows of trucks held up at Channel Tunnel and unable to pass through. Causing further delays of people coming or going through Calais itself.

By morning, everyone had heard the news...that Britain had literally dropped out of the European Union...it was followed right after by the Pound itself - as investors and businesses were literally shaken and tripped over each other. The famous banking services in London itself hitting a literal brick wall - as red tape literally tangled them up like barbed wire, and to prevent a total collapse of their assets...many of them had literally jumped ship and moved their HQ over to other regions in Europe due to the sudden shock itself.

Needless to say...by the first week alone...half a million people had literally had their future ripped out. Many had lost billions of pounds of worth in investments and savings; jobs having to literally drop people from their work overnight, or their business going bankrupt overnight from the shock itself of having so much chaos and money flowing or going in every direction. This was further compounded by the literal lack of any infrastructure or even funds - after all...NOBODY expected Britain to literally be thrown out onto the streets. Not those in the working class nor those in the higher echelons of power. Although the reality was much...much worse. As the reality itself came literally crashing down for many involved at that. Especially the younger generation whom had been suffering especially in this century - as things had been slowly recovering from the 2008 Crash. Many of them had been very vocal against Brexit, if lacking in activity in the crucial moments, until now...

"DEATH TO THE FASCISTS!"

In a sense, in less than two weeks Westminister had turned into a literal warzone - similar in size and scope and even meaning to Euromaidan in Ukraine. As thousands upon thousands of students, unemployed workers and several other people had been 'assaulting' the Palace of Westminister and were out for blood this time. Being just as bad, if not worse to the many riots that had happened in the United States - except this time, those in power had no excuse and no way to 'lie' themselves out of this mess. Boris Johnson had become the most hated man in London and most hated Prime Minister in British history. The masses which had remained divided against each other over their 'flavor' of Brexit had by now completely unified their hatred against the Tories. As only the hardest and most fringe politician or individual had desired a total and hard Brexit - and NOT the kind that had ruined their economy and way of life completely.

Either way, as far as things were happening - the House of Commons had assembled for an emergency meeting and all but declared special elections to soon occur - all the while Boris' Government had been sacked by a vote of non-confidence...with only a handful voting against such an act. Considering how the Tories were literally bleeding people, influence and support - many people were predicting an almost 'landslide' victory for the Labor Party, whom were promising to cease this 'anti-EU' sentiment and return to a time of 'normality'.

President Nikos Romanos Announces Infrastructure Spending

Image

President Nikos Romanos, in his first major policy announcement since he won the 1st January presidential elections, has announced his infrastructure spending plan. Updating Gavdos' infrastructure had been a major campaign pledge, and the President wants to make good on his promise. He has announced a $350,000 spending proposal that will see roads expanded, public transportation strengthened with new, modern vessels and 4G coming to Gavdos.

"Gavdos is a modern, European, first world country, and our infrastructure should reflect that," Mr. Romanos stated. "This bill will create new jobs, boost incomes, attract migrants and entice tourists. It will be a much needed stimulus that will finally see our economy escape the stagnation of past years and grow rapidly. It will be the signature policy of my administration. An administration that puts jobs first. Working together, we can make Gavdos the jewel of the Mediterranean."

While President Romanos hopes to see his plan approved by the parliament, it will all depend on how cooperative the opposition will be. The President's Liberal Alliance party has only 4 MPs whereas the conservative National Hope party has 6 MPs. Without a majority, the President may need to revise his plans and make concessions to get the support of National Hope for his bill.

Parliament Majority Leader Christos Ferentinos On Infrastructure Bill

Image

The Parliament Majority Leader Christos Ferentinos has been careful not to make any definite statements on the President's plans for infrastructure spending. "We need assurances that there will be no new taxes imposed to finance the bill," Mr. Ferentinos said, "and that the President will not seek to bring us in the European Union. We may also need to revise the amount of money that will be spent, as the last thing we need is more debt. Those concerns aside, though, I am inclined to view the President's plans positively and I do believe that infrastructure spending is necessary."

This statement has been interpreted as a message to both National Hope moderates and hardliners. Moderates have been assured that he will not reject infrastructure spending nor will he refuse to work with the President, while hardliners have been assured that he will strike a hard bargain in order to give National Hope's support to the bill. Maintaining that delicate balance is a necessity for Mr. Ferentinos, as the May parliamentary elections approach. In order to maintain his majority in the chamber, he needs to win over both staunch conservatives and moderates who wish to see National Hope act as check to the President's liberal impulses but who also don't want gridlock.

Parliament Minority Leader Vasilis Leventis On Spending, Elections

Image

Parliament Minority Leader, Vasilis Leventis, has praised the President's announcement. "It is a bold, radical policy proposal that will completely transform Gavdos into a regional hub with top notch infrastructure. Instead of a rock, we will become a model for the future. This bill will also translate into jobs, jobs, jobs. That is; money, money, money. Money in the pockets of hard-working Gavdians. No longer will we be reliant on summer tourism. This is the kind of radical thinking we need. We will take this country forward!"

Asked about how this will affect the May parliamentary elections, he replied; "I believe it will boost our chances of recapturing the parliament. People realize that in order to get our infrastructure updated and jobs created, we need a Liberal majority and not a conservative majority that will attempt to sabotage and cripple this ambitious plan. It is thus imperative that the Gavdian people give us a vote of confidence in the upcoming elections."

So far, polls show National Hope at 52% and Liberal Alliance at 48% in the parliamentary preference, though the President has a 65% favorability rating. It remains to be seen if the President's favorability will translate into a Liberal swing, but so far National Hope remains the favorite in the polls and looks poised to retain its majority. Both parties have been in full motion, mobilizing their supporters, but it seems that the elections may be decided on the center; National Hope desires to persuade centrists that it will act as a responsible check on the President's liberal agenda while the Liberal Alliance wants to persuade centrists that without a liberal majority, gridlock will ensue.

Vice-President Giorgos Mavrotas On Foreign Investments

Image

While most attention focuses on the infrastructure bill and the parliamentary elections, Vice-President Giorgos Mavrotas spoke in a teleconference about the government's agenda of attracting foreign investments. "I believe that this infrastructure bill should be viewed within the context of attracting foreign direct investments," he stated. "Indeed, our top priority is to attract foreign investment in Gavdos. Without divulging anything, I can state that we've already made progress on that front and the results shall be seen in the coming months."

"Our top priority is to get the economy moving," the vice-president explained. "We need modern solutions to our problems. Tax cuts are no longer the answer. We need updated digital and physical infrastructure, we need to promote an open and welcoming society that attracts bright minds, we need foreign investments that respect the environment and workers' rights and create a win win situation for both investors and workers. We need to work together as a society. We need a new type of capitalism, what I would call 'popular capitalism'."

Foreign Minister Thanos Tzimeros On New Foreign Policy Agenda

Image

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thanos Tzimeros, has spoken about the new direction that Gavdos would take on foreign policy. "While Greece is of course our first and foremost ally and the United States are always a dear friend," he said, "we will be seeking closer ties with the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics and the European Union. With the Soviets, we can seek further cooperation on financial matters, as Gavdos is very much open to Soviet investment and I do know that there is interest on the part of the Soviets for investments in our country."

"With the European Union, things are a bit more complicated," Mr. Tzimeros said. "Our party seeks entry into the European Union, but with society split on that issue and National Hope in control of the parliament, I do not think membership is imminent. We can however seek closer economic ties to the European Union, even while remaining outside of it. We will especially seek to work with Germany on investments into the renewable energy sector. Gavdos is almost always sunny, and we can make use of solar power."

Rome,Italy
Prime Minister's Office

While awaiting the Soviet President's response, Prime Minister Salvini held an emergency cabinet meeting with his ministers. He began the meeting, "As you have all heard, Boris Johnson was just sacked as the Prime Minister of Great Britain by a vote of No Confidence in their House of Commons. All this is due to them leaving the EU without any agreement. This has seriously affected their economy in a bad way and I believe it is our duty as one of their trusted friends and allies to help a friend who is in dire need. If Germany thinks Italy will follow them like a lost puppy, they are wrong. I will not stand by and let Germany dominate the European Union like it has been doing these last few year. I will be proposing a bill before the House of Deputies asking for 100 billion Euros in economic aid to the UK. I will make this bill my top priority as the British people are our friends and friends help each other." His other ministers nod in agreement.

Official Press Release of the Office of the Italian Prime Minister

In official statement from Italian Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, he has announced that he will be introducing a bill before the House of Deputies asking for 10 billion Euros in economic aid to the UK due to their recent economic downturn after leaving the EU. He said while his government is very much anti-EU, Italy must take a much more careful approach if Italy does leave the EU in the future. For now he said, Italy must take a leadership role within the Union to counter German influence. In other news, Prime Minister Salvini announces that Italian companies will begin investing in other countries across the Mediterranean Sea and around the world primarily Turkey, Egypt, Indonesia, India, the USSR, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.

Robert Mugabe. His dictatorial rule as President of Zimbabwe has been a mismatch of inital prosperity blindsided by foolish economic decisions, nationalist attitudes and a near collapse of the social state. The only reason why angry mobs didn't ransack government buildings had two main factors: The first was the Isitya Sesonka, or bread bowl, which had gaurenteed the bare minimum plus a little bit extra. Schooling was provided for those from 8 to 14. It made little sense, however, to construct large scale universities and higher education in a nation whose average life-expectancy was just 60 years old. Why not put that money to good use in buying a large yacht... in a landlocked country. Ok, so the Zimbabwean political elites wern't the smartest bunches of shit from the cow-pie, but they knew to employ the breads and circuses. The second was cold, hard steel graciously supplied by Somalian warlords, who themselves had bought them from Iraqi terrorists, whom themselves had been sold the weapon by stalin himself apparently. President Mugabe took little stock in such rumors, so long as they were weapons that worked some of the time without blowing the farmer-turned infantry grunt's arms off, that was the Zimbabwean stamp of approval.
The sliding of a glass door caught the ninety four year old president's attention in his swiveling chair. The elderly african was met with the glare of his personal secretary, Mobutu Ngawazame.
"What? Can't the president linger around in his office this early in the morning, or has the cabinet decided they want to throw in their lot with fucking gucci grace again?"
"No..." started Mobutu, his pale green eyes sharpening before his left hand disappered into the confines of his pocket. Mugabe flinched, he blinked, he broke. Mugabe would make one hell of a terrible civil war general, unable to rally even a customary patriotic warcry before probably being murdered by some fucking jhonny reb.
"If you're going to do it, do it to my ex-wife!"
Mobutu's features shifted suddenly at the squeamish tone the normally tough president yelped at.
"What? I'm not going to kill you." He then pulled out a cell phone. What struck Mugabe was the design of the phone. It looked not like the rotary one he had in his office, nor the blocky and cumbersome one in his secretarys, no, it was a smart-phone. One with that fancy schmancy "touch" screens.
"A gift?" Mugabe readjusts his glasses on his face, squinting at the backside, clearly labled 'made in china'.
"An Interview with a western journalist. They're doing a piece in the times of new york about Zimbabwe, so I offered to get my connections and have you meet with him in his hotel room, or you could do it over the phone. Your choice."
"Talk with the west?"
"Yes, a simple chit-chat, as the americans slander it. Nothing more than a few easy questions. Like, what are your economic policies and how do you think this is affecting the people?"
"Then I can explain about the Isitya Sesonka."
Mobutu nodded his head enthusiastically before turning the doorknob.
"One more thing Mugabe, try not to piss your pants on tv, It'll also be filmed for western media, I think the outlet was Foxing News, or NCC, some western bastards like that."
"Oh, fuck you. The great Robert Gabriel Mugabe does not piss his pants, his pants simply combust!"
Mobutu lightly punched the dictator playfully on the arm before kissing his elderly forehead.
"Don't fuck this up. You'll have to get there by 4."
With a slam of the door, Mugabe was alone in his office once again. He spun back in his chair and stared whistfully at the city of Harare, hand touching the glass.
"Why would he come all the way here?"

Peter Hughes-Wilcox gingerly set up the microphone in his hotel room. Carefully lowering it in between two folding chairs that he had requested, he let out a sigh of relif as a knock on the door brought his attention away from the exhaustive preperations. When he opened the door he took in the sight of the commander of Zimbabwe. Dressed in a three-piece suit, his skin looked as dark as chocolate, though he was rather old, and seemed to breath a bit harder than he had remembered on his last birthday party.
"President Mugabe."
"Ah, hello, uh, fuck I forgot your name, can I call you asshole?"
"It's Peter."
Mugabe scowled for a brief moment before a beaming smile was reintroduced to the social space by the president.
"Ah, Asshole-Peter it is! That's a solid compromise, eh?"
Peter frowned as Mugabe sat down on one of the folding chairs, watching as a red light on the reporter's laptop went to green, a sign that they were live with the interview. Just before it started, he let out some gas. He could apolgize to crop-dusting the room, but where was the fun in that? Being an immature nintey year old was sure to let out some tension.

PETER: "Hello, I'm Peter-Hughes-Wilcox of the BBC. Tonight I've got an exclusive interview, carefully arranged between top ranking zimbabwean officals and members of the british government in a rare moment of solidarity and agreement. Temporary sanctions were lifted on certain Zimbabwean officals in order to gain myself access. My special guest, President Robert Gabriel Mugabe of Zimbabwe."
MUGABE: "Thank you asshole-Peter! I mean, Peter. That's your name ain't it? Have I been lied to like some bitch?"
PETER: "No, no, you're quite right, I'm peter. Now, Many outside members of the regime have been critical of your rule. There's been widespread condemnation of your anti-white policies and potential human-rights abuses. What do you have to say for your actions? Do you express regret at your xenophobia and transphobia?"
MUGABE: "Trans-what?"
PETER: "Transphobia, fear of people who are transgender, with bigotry and sexism against such a diverse group of people. Do you regret that?"
MUGABE: "I have no regrets. You know, when I first got in politics, Zimbabwe was managed by a racist regime, real bad people. I was a freedom fighter. You know I fought in many war. Many wars, I fought in and I get respect. I get respect from my church, my men and my people. That is how I was able to rule for so long. You can't show weakness. In Zimbabwe, you show weakeness you fucking die. I don't show weakness. Not for me, no. If I was to regret, that-"
PETER: "That would show weakness."
MUGABE: "Bitch do not interrupt me. Where was I?-"
PETER: "You were talking about the need for strength in Zimbabwe."
MUGABE: "You are a bitch, interrupting me. Stop it you god shit. Now... If you are weak, you die. That's why I show strength, by killing many of those men who think they are women and the women who think they are men. It's not right. Sick in head they are. Solution is a bullet to the brain. Not in Zimbabwe, maybe in those western infidel countries, or possibly Russia, but not in glorious Zimbabwe. You know, I had legislation passed that has the death penatly for such debauchary and bitchyness. Good People, the Parliament is. Strong, and Bigly sexy."
PETER: "Right.. Now, onto this second topic, The... apologies in advance if I butcher this, Xhosas isn't my first language, The Isitya Sesonka. Many left-leaning groups argue that this is simply too lax, not enough to cover all the ailes of the people of Zimbabwe, such as food shortages, lack of access to clean drinking water, insufficent education and a high level of unemployment. Do you ever think you might expand it?"
MUGABE: "You know the first rule to being a dick is to run over your neighbor with a lawnmower. The first rule to being a dictator is to run over your neighbor's neighbor with his lawnmower instead. The Isitya Sesonka is designed to keep the people appeased. I can be blunt and say It's not working. I'm showing humility in admitting that your millions in foriegn aide go right to my pockets, not the Zimbabwean people. I only give 1% of my personal wealth to the government, However, this year I'm announcing that I shall double it. I must be more generous in helping lift the zimbabwean economy out of despair."
PETER: "What about your rampant anti-white policy that seems to drive your foreign affairs, with you recently calling the Queen of England quote "a f**king b*tch." Aren't you afraid that you're going to have a dependancy on foreign aid, and it might be shut off if your not careful."
MUGABE: "No, I'm not scared of that. The west has historically bullied many smaller countries, poorer countries like us. I stuck with the west until I couldn't. I can't stick with the white man anymore. The white-man is a paler version of the devil. Fucking white people. They bring in drugs, crime and they probably get away with nasty shit. I swear they're plotting to bring back Ian Smith. They're plotting against glorious Zimbabwe Pan-African national socialism!"
PETER: "Woah, you're saying that the white minority is plotting to establish a nazi regime? That's an inciendary claim to make against a minority group."
MUGABE: "It's true. I have no facts, but It's my gut feeling. The damn whites are ruining glorious Zimbabwe. Those uneducated hicks, white fuck trash, they barge into the country and expect every little thing to be handed to them? Well I'll tell them this, they are cockroaches. Little fucking cockroaches. What happens to cockroaches?"
Mugabe then eyes a cockroach scurrying along the ground next to the reporter's feet. While this would raise an alarm in some western country, in this third world shit-hole, not many people would really bat an eye, and would even exchange bizzare looks at the freaked out nature of some westerner.
SLAM
Mugabe's foot squished the bug, killing it instantly with a sickening crunch of it's little bones. Without missing a beat, he eyes directly into Peter's camera.
"They get exterminated."

Official Press release of the Office of the Zimbabwe President

President Robert G. Mugabe has announced that he will introduce a bill before the National Assembly that proposes the reclamation of the remaining 280 white farms. He argues that this is "long overdue" for the "rightful masters of Zimbabwe." Proponents of the bill argue it would boost cotton production, aiding the local textile industries and strengthening the economy, with rudimentary estimates saying the move would increase the GDP of Zimbabwe by .2% by the year 2022.
Opponents of the bill come from a few members of the Movement for Democratic Change, with a spokesperson arguing that the move would "backfire" pointing to the other instances of land reclamation from the initially prosperous white farms into mismanaged black farms. Outside observers, however, see the move as pandering to the anti-white rhetoric that has "consumed the ZANU-PF" over the last few years.

In other news, Mugabe has decidedly rejected most, though not all forms of foreign aid and humanitarian supplies, threatening to "organize the Abathanda Ubuzwe to rough up the damned nuns that are turning our children homosexual." This has lead to an increased spike in violence against human rights journalists and humanitarian aid workers. One Red Cross Ambulance was reportedly, in the words of the gunner of the offending tank that shot at it, "Blown the Fuck Out." Pro-Mugabe mobs have also been rummaging the streets of the capital, setting fire to white-owned businesses and forcibly marching onto the remaining white farms and burning them down.

Official Statement of the Foreign Ministry of the Czechoslovak Federative Republic

Regarding Zimbabwe, the Czechoslovak Federative Republic officially condemns Robert Mugabe and his promotion of violence against the country's white population, as well as his disregard for foreign aid and human rights. As a response to this, Czechoslovakia will offically be placing diplomatic and economic sanctions on Zimbabwe, while all Czechoslovak nationals are advised to avoid and/or leave Zimbabwe immediately. Czechoslovakia would encourage other European states to do the same. Czechoslovakia considers Zimbabwe to be a rogue state, while designating the pro-government militia group Abathanda Ubuzwe as a terrorist organization.

As an ethnically Slavic country, Czechoslovakia is also disappointed that Robert Mugabe calls himself "African Hitler", which is very alarming due to the atrocities that the Nazis committed against Slavs, Jews and other minorities during WW2.

January 21, 2021,1:27 pm, Havana, Cuba

In the plaza in front of the capitol building, protesters filled it to the brim, holding up picket signs and fists. Surrounding them are armed-to-the-teeth Civil Defense National Reserve members, who are in charge of making sure protests do not grow out of control. Meanwhile, inside the capitol building, the National Assembly of People's Power was holding an emergency meeting, attempting to address recent protests. However, they couldn't agree on how to adequately deal with the protesters.

The following is translated from Spanish
Diaz-Canel: "Order! Order! If we are to solve this domestic crisis, we must cooperate."
NAPP member #1: "Well, the way I see it, we must negotiate with them. This way-"
NAPP member #2: "You want to negotiate with those traitors?! They are counter-revolutionary insurrectionist pigs! We shouldn't even consider negotiations!"
As the two bickered, President Miguel Diaz-Canel was tapped on the shoulder. He turned, and a woman handed him a report from the State Ministry. He read the paper thoroughly, then called out, indicating the two NAPP members to stop.
Diaz-Canel: "I have just received a report from the Ministry of State. Apparently, the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has been removed from his position via a no-confidence vote, following the fallout of the no-deal Brexit. The Ministry inquires what we shall do and/or say about this."
NAPP member #3: "Well, what do you suggest?"
Diaz-Canel: "Well, I suggest we send the best of wishes to the new Prime Minister."
NAPP member #2: "And why should we do that?"
Diaz-Canel: "It could help our image to show solidarity with the British. It could have positive long term effects."
NAPP member #2: "What does it have to do with us? With the protesters?"
Diaz-Canel: "Well since you can't agree, I will take executive action myself. We will congratulate the new British Prime Minister and continue supervising, and only supervising, protests."
Diaz-Canel then ended the emergency meeting, while protests continued outside the capitol building

Official Statement from the Cuban Communist Party
"The Cuban Communist Party hereby recognizes and congratulates the new British Prime Minister. We hope that this will bring good fortune to Great Britain, and to their relations with us."

Buenos Aires, Argentina

The last few days in Buenos Aires have been obviously bleak. Although the skies tend to be clear at this time of the year, 2021 being no exception, less people are in the streets, unless its looking for a job. Business close down at a slightly accelerated pace, and small bound-to-fail startups pop up here and there through downtown, with handcrafter products being offered for some hours before the would-be entrepreneur gives up and goes back home.

Almost as a reminder of the situation, this frame escorts the cars that head to the building of the Commerce and Services Chamber of Argentina, just next to the Government Building -La Casa Rosada- and embedded into the late 19th century urban landscape.

The cars, many of them blinded and protected from would-be attackers, head through the narrow streets into the building. One after another, representatives of various production and financial sectors reach the meeting. Inside the chamber they all converge into a room, sitting at a long table. The end-seat is reserved, and the seat next to it is also empty, and soon they are the only to arrive before the meeting can commence.

The talking reveals the overall situation.
The recent election of President Wilkerson had not been kind to the Argentine standing towards creditors. A stronger Dollar meant a weaker Peso, so now the imports and exports became more expensive for Argentines. Already two demonstrations had taken to the streets on Monday and Tuesday. Large ones.
Perhaps that is what made President Fernandez that somber as he walked into the room. Every one of the attendees turned and gave a couple of steps towards their appointed seats. Fernandez gave not a gaze to the bankers, agrarian managers and industrial handlers in the room. The man following him, the President of the Central Bank of Argentina. Miguel Angel Pasce’s face denoted an obvious upset. More obvious than the underlying redness in Alberto Fernandez’s face. Had the two been fighting? The Big Names of the Argentine economy exchanged nervous faces before they were given permission to sit.

“Gentlemen…” The President began. “I am entirely sure you all know why we are gathered.”
Fernandez’s eyes scanned the faces around him. They knew, for sure. “Our economy has been struggling for decades, and even by the previous government we feared a new 2001. Fact is today we are facing another scenario in which everything could collapse.”

The devaluation of the Peso and the bad capital leaks in the economy surely came to their mind. “I still believe we can avert this storm, and I need you all for this. Mr. Pasce here assures me that we can have a new policy in a couple of days, with a slight cut of the fiscal rates, nothing new there. We will also extend the Exchange Holidays, from eight days to fifteen, the new days to be taken next week, and add a few requirements and limitations to the purchase of American Dollars.”

There was a murmur.
“Also, we are set to increase the PAIS Tax on Exchanges and using that additional income to add to the Bicentenario Fund. I am sure you will all join us in this effort to ensure better conditions with the IMF.”

Now the murmur became something more. Not quite an uproar, more like an unspoken grumble. Pasce’s face turned tense, as if he expected backlash, and he eyed the President.
“Sir…” A man called Cavallo, linked to big soy producers in the countryside, spoke up. “While I understand the need, you do understand our industry can’t take this blow. It just can’t.” He asserted with a general agreement.
“Jaime, you know what is about to happen. We can’t hold our promises to the IMF and our loans will expire soon. Without this extra cushion we are roasted.” He added a bit of informality. Fernandez’s appeal didn’t garner more support. But nobody rebuked him.

Outside it seemed the collapse the President predicted had already started. However it was not quite that. A crowd gathered outside the building, occupying the street all the way to the Casa Rosada. Flags of Campora, Frente de Todos and other Kirchnerist groups blocked the dim sunlight at the floor of the street, and more people kept pouring in. Slogans like “Down with the FMI payment”, “More Jobs Now” and “Oligarch meat for the people” were also visible. But the chants that began dissonant and unorganized became more uniform, more coordinated. “We, with Cristina.” Over and over.

And Cristina did listen. From the access hall to her office at the Congress building some blocks across she watched the gathering on TV.
“Who called for this?” She asked.
“Máximo says it wasn’t him.” A secretary replied, putting down her phone. “Santiago hasn’t picked up.”
Cafiero... the Chief of the Cabinet. Cristina considered him loyal to her. But perhaps a bit inexperienced. Was he trying to put pressure on the businessmen? After all, the taxation was her idea. But if he had, it was grossly miscalculated.
“Zuain sent a message too… He sent you an e-mail, madame President.”
Cristina’s eyes split from the TV and looked at the secretary. “I will read it on my office.” She stood up and headed through a door and closed it behind her. She checked a couple of corners, making sure she wasn’t being watched, and booted up her computer, then read. She would have to act quick.

January 22nd

The contents of the meeting were kept a secret, but the intentions of the President made were public within the hour. Already a pandemonium took over the nation, at least on the layer that sews together economy and politics. Members of the guilds and industry that attended the meeting were making calls. Governors, particular those opposed to the government, representatives and senators were informed ahead of time of the extra taxation and how it would affect the economy of their districts. That very day protests were organized for the 22nd against the extra taxes and exchange rate restrictions and the economic situation of the country. And it promised to be massive.

Kirchner didn’t let down. She had to counter, and so more protests were called to oppose. From the first moment it looked as though there would be violence. Police across the various provinces called the Campora to move their demonstrations to another day or elsewhere, but they were unheeded. The dawn of the 22nd the various leaders who called for the protests announced they would not sponsor a manifestation against the Government that day, cooperating with the Police, and would instead do it sometime the following week. A victory for Cristina.

Thousands take t the street, waving her flags and chanting her son. Cristina is, at this point, the embodiment of Evita. Leaders from across her spectrum brag of the power of Peronism, Justicialism and Kirchnerism, able to drive away the “fascists”. Some violence unfolds in the streets, outliers who decided to protest anyway, but other than some injuries, no damage is to be lamented.

Yet the storm is unleashed.

That very day a woman gets on a car, ready to go visit her sister. She turns on the radio and ignites the engine. Then pushed the pedal and the car moves across the road. Its eleven in the morning. Ana Boragni listens to the news. The violence was averted at least. In any case, it helped her and her husband. She reached a corner. Benito Juárez and Antofagasta. The red light forces her to stop. Perón with the 64th, in Villa Lynch.
It’s not a terrible place to live, all things considered. But Ana is still angry at this. Forced to hide. Hide from what? The Kirchners are in power. They should be able to protect them. Her husband is in prison and they have been unable to get him out still. At least she can visit her sister. He eyes look around. She is waiting next to a battery shop. And it seems busy.

Green light. Then a flash.

The air around her is filled with shrapnel. Then fire and smoke. Ana barely notices this. The shockwave sends her head against the window next to her, cracking her skull. Then the entire side of the shop catches fire, a toxic fire that seems to spread like napalm amidst black smoke. People run, but there is not much to do.

The Police reports the mishandling of car batteries in storage caused a chain reaction on the room located across the brick wall separating it from the street. The acid and soot that spewed out torched everything nearby, and bricks were found as far as three blocks away. Three people died, including one Ana Boragni, aged 63, who headed to see her sister. Not many noticed her name to be linked to the bombing of a building in 1994.

January 22,2021, 11:39, Havana, Cuba[size=150]

In Havana, the capitol pavilion was once again filled with protesters, seemingly more than there were yesterday. They began audibly chanting "DOWN WITH THE COMMUNISTS!". The chant was heard throughout the streets of downtown Havana.

Meanwhile, inside the Presidential residence, Miguel Diaz-Canel sat at his desk, reading social media posts on his phone. He then found the post that was made by the president of Zimbabwe. He read it thoroughly. "Hmm...this seems very vulgar." He then read the Official Press Release. As he continued reading, he became more and more stunned. "How in the hell have other countries accepted this?", Miguel said to himself. He then received a news alert. It read "ARGENTINE GOVERNMENT COMMENTS ON CUBAN UNREST". He tapped on the alert, it taking him to the news story. Included was the official statement, which Miguel read.

"Well, this is interesting." Miguel thought.

Back at the capitol pavilion, some of the protesters begin to tussle with some police officers. This then evolves into multiple protesters beating up the officer. Other police officers rushed over, but were pushed away by other protesters. Then, multiple people charged through the newly made hole in the defenses, going inside the capitol building. More and more begin rushing towards the capitol building, trampling police officers along the way.

Some people in the past few weeks have said the communist regime in Cuba was one disaster away from collapsing. This new development could mean the end of communism in Cuba.

PROTESTERS STORM THE CUBAN CAPITOL BUILDING

In a stunning show of rebellion, anti-government protesters have burst their way through police defenses and have stormed the capitol. It is unclear whether or not members of the National Assembly of People's Power are inside or not, but if so, they could be in danger. We will give you updates as soon as possible.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel held a personally written speech in his hand, as he stood just outside the press room in the Presidential Residence. He spoke to his Minister of Domestic Affairs. "Are you sure about this, Miguel?" Miguel replies: "I'm sure. It has become very clear that this needs to be done. The people of Cuba have spoken."

Miguel then turned, walking into the press room, where cameras and reporters from state-owned media set up. He walked up to the podium, placed his speech down, cleared his throat, then began to recite his speech(translated from Spanish).

"People of Cuba, my friends, I am deeply sorry. Only now do I understand that this government has failed to meet the needs of it's people. You have protested for the past month, and it has come to a head. The fact that it had to come to this is in itself humiliating. I deeply care about you all, which is why I have reached my decision. I, Miguel Diaz-Canel, am officially resigning from my position as President. Numerous members of the NAPP have already done the same. The people spoke, and we have listened. It took us until now to listen to the suffering people, who deserve much better. For this, I am deeply sorry. This was a very hard decision to make, but after listening to the masses, I am sure that this is what is needed for Cuba to grow."

Cuban president Miguel Diaz-Canel, and most of the communist government, have all handed in their resignations from their respective posts. This comes after protesters stormed the Cuban capitol building earlier today. We will bring updates as they come.

After the collapse of the government, people celebrated in the streets throughout Cuba, and especially in Havana. Fireworks constantly went off across the city. People also celebrated by burning pictures of Fidel Castro, who had been the symbol of their oppression that had lasted for generations. Inside the capitol pavilion, a stage was set up, and there was a crowd, eagerly awaiting the new acting-president, Julio Eduardo-Guttierez, who, as a member of the NAPP, privately supported protests. He walked onto the stage and up to a podium, the crowd applauding him louldly. Julio then began to speak(translated from Spanish).

"My people..., today is a new day." The crowed wildly applauded him, a testimony as to just how many hated the communist regime.
Julio continued. "No longer shall we suffer under an oppressive regime that favors an outdated and weak ideology. Today, Cuba is free. We have taken the shackles and torn them off! Today, we move forward towards a brighter future, and a stronger Cuba! We will embrace our neighbors, not push them away. We will become one with the world, and start over." People in the crowd applauded once more, as Julio continued. "I, as new acting president until proper elections are held, hereby call on the UN to strengthen and quicken Cuba's transformation. As for our neighbors up north, I say we welcome American cooperation with open arms. As for our Caribbean neighbors, including Jamaica, The Bahamas, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, I say we welcome Caribbean cooperation with open arms. As for our European neighbors, I say we welcome European cooperation with open arms. No longer shall Cuba harm itself by isolating itself. All our neighbors will be treated as neighbors and not enemies. With this global cooperation, Cuba can become great once more. As I wrap this up, I repeat, today is a new day!" The people than applaud again, as fireworks go off nearby.

The future of Cuba is still uncertain, but if you ask Cubans, it just got much brighter.

23rd of January
Berlin, Germany

Martin Schulz almost barfed. The German president was sick to the stomach at the news from Rome. The Italian government had perhaps unintentionally called Taiwan a country. Now most everyone could understand that Taiwan was a country all but in name, and what Italy had just done could to put it mildly complicate things between the EU and China. To add insult to injury, the Italians were now claiming the Germans of all people were the bad guys, and that they would basically attempt to make life living hell in the EU for Germany and its policies.

Composing himself, President Schulz took a seat at his desk and with a sigh, started typing on his computer. First, he sent a videoconference invite to Chancellor Lindner, and second, he sent an email to the European Central Bank. He typed the emails quickly, partly fueled with frustration and anger. In a way, he could imagine the ghost of Adenauer rising from his grave and marching to Rome to read the Italians the riot act and explain quite forcefully why one was better within the EU. Well, maybe Mario Draghi could do an equally good job. Either way, Schulz could feel his blood boil, and so he stood up and started taking deep breaths...breathing in...and then out...in....and then out. By the time he had calmed down, a notification on his computer showed the chancellor was ready to talk with him.

"Yes?" Schulz said as he sat down.

"Mr. President." Chancellor Lindner nodded.

"I assume you heard the good tidings from Rome." Sighed the president.

"I have. And I am impressed that Italian's think that they will survive without the EU. Have they forgotten that one Euro is equal to 2,000 Lire? I certainly hope not." Was the chancellor's reply.

"Well, not just that; the optics of such an act will look quite---odd---especially after what the UK has gone through. The cautionary tale will seemingly have to repeat itself twice." Stated Schulz.

"Perhaps in an attempt to keep the EU alive, we should dispose of the Euro," Lindner suggested.

"That is madness!" Gasped the president

"But is it? All else in the EU would pre preserved, simply the Euro would be gone. Replaced with the Deutsche Mark, Franc, Lira, etc. It would allow each nation more control of their finances, and conversely, it will mean that bailouts will be much more painful for other nations since they will have to repay the stronger nations on less favorable terms than the Euro. And it would both subvert Euroscepticism and create an unparalleled German hegemony of epic proportions. The glory days of the Deutsche Mark being the second-largest reserve currency would return, and so would the currency's unparallel stability." Explained the chancellor.

"Lindner, let's move on. Perhaps the situation in Cuba merits a press release." Suggested Schulz.

"Certainly. Certainly. Something around the lines of 'we support the democratic transition but also urge calm, restrain, and rational progress.'" Said Lindner.

"Yes, yes." Remarked the president.

"And as for Argentina?" Wondered the chancellor.

"It is an issue of their own creation. But if worst comes to worst, we will intervene." Replied the president.

German Foreign Ministry

The German Government and Chancellor Christian Lindner congratulate Acting President Julio Eduardo-Guttierez on his swift rise to power. It is the hope of Germany that this transition of power will lead to improvements in Cuba, with a hopefully brighter future for the Cuban people. The German Government urges caution in the transition of power and askes the Acting President to read lightly and carefully so as to not cause a major upset that could be detrimental to the future development of Cuba.

Germany welcomes Cuba back onto the global stage, and kindly requests other nations proceed to do the same. It is notably concerning to the German Government that its fellow EU member state---Italy---offered aid to the prior Cuban government, betraying and disrupting the traditional EU stance on non-intervention in conflicts and coups unless it is absolutely necessary to act.

Domestic Affairs

The Kremlin, Moscow, USSR
January 20th, 2021
8 PM MST

President Orlov sat in his Kremlin office watching the flat-screen TV as nearly 5 thousand miles away the new US President was being sworn in. Having just been sworn in himself only ten days prior, Orlov now hoped that he would be able to work well with his new American counterpart, but for now, his focus was on a more domestic matter.

Just then one of the phones on his desk started to ring. Answering it, Orlov listened as the voice on the other end informed him that they were ready for him in the Kremlin Situation Management Room. Normally the Soviet President would handle these matters at the National Defense Management Center at the Ministry of Defense but Orlov had felt that traveling there and back would be nothing more than a waste of time.

Karshi-Khanabad Air Base, Karshi, Uzebekistan SSR
January 20th, 2021
8:05 PM MST (10:05 Local Time)

Sitting on the runway of Karshi-Khanabad Air Base, a dark and winged silhouette sat as a few Soviet Airmen did a final check over the vehicle before giving a thumbs up and walking away and back to the control room. A moment later the engines of the Sokol Altius started up before it slowly crept started down the runway before picking up speed and lifting gently into the dark skies before banking South, a direction it would stay for a little longer than an hour.

Near Lashkargah, Helmand Province, Afghanistan
9:20 PM MST

High up in the sky, the Altius scanned the road below. Back in the USSR, a Soviet pilot sat comfortably as he gently guided the Altius through the air and kept a diligent eye on his screen. Finally, he found what he was looking for, a convoy of three pickup trucks heading away from Lashkargah. HUMINT had pegged this group as several of the higher-ups in the Helmand province’s Taliban that the coalition had been seeking for some time now. A clear priority for elimination.

Checking with the information he had on the target, and feeling certain that it was the target, the pilot turned over his shoulder and asked his CO to confirm. After a few minutes and one last call to higher-ups, the CO gave a thumbs up before the pilot calmly took a breath and pressed the trigger.

Moments later, on the ground in Helmand Province, a single, jarring explosion erupted were three trucks had once been.

Meetings

USSR-UK

January 25th, 2020
Moscow, USSR

The Russian military guard stood ready for the moment the British Prime Minister’s plane landed and taxied to the red carpet. With them was the military band ready to render a full official welcome to the PM.

Prime Minister Starmer would step outside the plane as soon as it touched down - in days like these, it was more important to look busy than appear ‘diplomatic’. Since the Brexit Debacle that had been choking the life of Britain for three weeks now - things had ‘modestly’ calmed down - although they were still bleeding: people, money, business, and savings by a good amount. They needed to get back on their feet and quickly - before something worse happened on top of everything else. Keir Starmer managed a moment to wave and smile for the cameras - although not much more than that - before he met and shook hands with his Russian counterpart.

President Orlov smiled as he shook the Briton’s hand saying “Prime Minister Starmer, I am glad you were able to make this trip. I believe that there is much we can do for each other. Please follow me and we can discuss things further at the Kremlin.”

Leading the PM to his Aurus Senat, President Orlov allowed him to enter first before he likewise slid inside right before the door was shut and the convoy headed back to the Kremlin.

Kremlin, Moscow, USSR

As the limo arrived at the Kremlin Senate Building, Orlov exited and led the British PM inside and to a large conference room. Shutting the door behind him, Orlov said “I was thinking to start it could be just you and I speaking together. Shall we start on your nation’s current… position?”

Prime Minister Starmer sighed in response to the statement. “I'm pretty sure you know how things are in Britain...we are barely holding things together...and we require immediate assistance…” he responded to President Orlov. All things considered, it was a truly absurd time when the former member of the Allies was asking aid from the ex-Communists.

“I don’t necessarily have time for political pleasantries sadly. So how about we merely lay out the cards now. What do you want and what can we provide?” he asked.

Orlov nodded as he said “To the point is always best. Well, one thing we would be interested in is naval technology sharing and perhaps leasing the Salomon Islands in the Indo-Pacific for a naval/airbase.”

“I see…” sighed Starmer - on one hand, it would be admittance to their loss of power, considering they would be leasing one of their foreign isles to the Russians - their former ‘enemies’. On the other hand - it had been almost thirty years since the end of the Cold War and the place ‘was’ an empty and desolate place in the middle of nowhere. If the Russians wanted to build stuff there AND aid their country at the same time...he wouldn’t say ‘no’ to them. Pride and arrogance were what led to this mess in the first place after all. “Alright...that sounds fair…”

Orlov gave a small smile as he said “Wonderful. Now on to the specifics of what we can do. The USSR is willing to float you a 20 billion USD loan at a 2% interest. In addition, we will buy 20 billion in UK bonds and buy out your shares in OneWeb. I also have a group of banks and private investors led by Sberbank and VTB who are willing to put up another 5 billion together for UK bonds. On another note, I spoke with the new US President who said he’s interested in a trade deal and loan for you as well and we agreed to work together to whip up more international loans or bond buys.” Sitting back in his chair he couldn’t help but remember, with a bit of sadness even, how mighty the UK had once been. An example of how any person or nation’s fortunes could change.

“That would be...most beneficial. However, we will need more than just...loans and money to fix our issues,” he responded. “We need to acquire new markets to help...distribute our goods. I understood the second portion of these talks would involve more...trade-oriented talks?”

“Is there...anything that Great Britain may offer to the USSR?” he added - hating to appear desperate, but with the amount of ‘shit’ that the Tories had left them - it wasn’t like he had much of a choice. They had ‘wanted’ to leave the EU after all, alongside with any benefits it once held - and while the bureaucrats were working overtime to try and restore the exchange of goods and services, it was taking the time and they needed something or somewhere to ‘offload’ their excess goods before the entire country began to ‘rot’.

“Besides everything we have already mentioned I believe the only thing of interest to us would perhaps be your future assistance in regards to Turkey. You see, I am going to start pushing for an update to the Montreux Convention allowing for the passage of Black Sea nation’s aircraft carriers.” Orlov said before taking a sip of water and sitting back.

“I understand...we can provide our...assistance...for whatever remains of it,” replied Starmer - it wasn’t necessarily how he imagined Britain being at the start of the 2020s. Although, after what the Tories left Labor...there weren't many options for them. “...I am sure we can talk over the ‘details’...”

“Thank you, the UK is seeing tough times but you are still a great nation and people in the eyes of the world.” Sitting back for a second, Orlov then said “Two last things, I propose we sign an emergency FTA for a three-month duration. The only stipulation on it would be that if any sector of either of our economies starts to be seriously negatively affected by the FTA, we can exclude that sector from the remaining time on the FTA. The second thing is simple, one of my objectives as President is the establishment of an independent Marine Corps. As such I would like Royal Marine assistance in the organization and basic training of this new force.”

“Sure...we can...help out with starting a basic course for your soldiers,” responded Starmer - as he knew that refusing anything that the Russian asked was a gamble in itself. When it came to military matters it was an even more delicate situation - though he was curious himself on why they needed another elite corps into the Russian Armed Forces.

“Thank you. No, shall we enjoy a dinner?” Orlov asked already very satisfied with the results of the meeting thus far.

Gavdos-USSR

January 27th, 2020
Island of Gavdos

Nikos Romanos, President of Gavdos, and Thanos Tzimeros, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Gavdos, were waiting at the Gavdos Airport, the only airport of the island. Five heavily armed men of the National Guard were accompanying them, waiting to give a proper welcome to the Soviet Foreign Minister.

The Soviet Government modernized Yak-40 carrying Dmytro Kuleba, the Soviet Foreign Minister, made a smooth landing before stopping at the welcome area. Onboard, Minister Kuleba stood by the door and, as it opened, he made his way down the steps and extended his hand to the Gavdos President and FM saying in Greek “Thank you for meeting with me.”

The Soviet Minister was led to Kastri, capital of Gavdos. Upon entering the Presidential Palace, the Soviet Minister was led to a wide conference room in which the two sides could negotiate.

Entering the room and taking his seat, Kuleba smiled as he said “Well shall we get started? The USSR is interested in expanding our relationship with Gavdos greatly. Firstly we would be interested in building a military signals intelligence base here. Would you be open to that?”

“We would be interested,” President Romanos replied, “but it depends on the offer you are making. In exchange for allowing the construction of such a military facility, we need Soviet funding in expanding our port of Kastri. We aim to make Gavdos a strategic trade post between Africa, Asia and Europe, and expanding the port would greatly help. We also need assurances that if we ever decide to join the European Union, we shall be allowed to do so. This is to be cooperation between two countries, but should not be viewed as tying Gavdos exclusively to the Soviet Union.”

“The USSR works hand in hand with the EU on many matters. That will not be an issue in the slightest as long as the EU doesn’t attempt to nullify our agreement. As for the port, we would be more than happy to help you in this but we would need one thing, docking rights for all Soviet ships.” Kuleba replied.

“We would be ready to grant docking rights for mercantile ships. Also, Soviet businesses shall be given a preference in the expansion of the port, as the project shall be undertaken in cooperation with private companies.”

“We would want the port to be accessible for our naval ships as well. Not to act as a base but in case of emergencies. We do appreciate the preference to our companies.” Kuleba said before taking a sip of water.

“If it’s only for emergency cases, then it can be agreed to.”

“Very well. As for other investments, I have been informed that Azimut Hotels is very interested in opening up a luxury resort here on your island. Is that something you’re open to?” Kuleba said.

“Of course. We are always open to foreign private investments.”

“Very glad to hear that. Back to the port, how much direct investment would you need?” Kuleba inquired.

“The cost should be at around fifty million,” Romanos responded.

“Very well, that won’t be an issue at all. Now is there anything else we have to discuss?” Kuleba said.

“I do not think so,” Romanos replied. “That should conclude our meeting. Looking forward to our cooperation.”

USSR-Germany

Khrabrovo Airport, Kaliningrad, USSR
January 30th, 2021

President Orlov stood among several of his key aides and ministers as the German Chancellor’s jet came into sight. Waiting for the small military honor guard to get into position, Orlov followed suit and stood prepared for his German colleague. As soon as the small meet and greet was done here at arrival, both the German and Soviet leaders would board the Soviet’s Mil Mi-38 Presidential helicopter for a short flight to the actual city of Kaliningrad.

The A319 carrying the chancellor landed at the airport, and had soon taxied over to a parking spot close to the helicopter. Stairs were wheeled over to the front left hand door. Soon thereafter, the door opened, and Chancellor Lindner emerged from the aircraft. After taking a quick glimpse around his surroundings, he walked down the stairs and towards his Soviet counterpart. Following him was the typical entourage of aides and advisors as well as translators that such a meeting demanded.

Shaking the German’s hand, Orlov said “I hope your flight here was comfortable. If you’ll follow me we can head to the main location for our meetings today.” Leading the German up and into the helicopter, Orlov took his seat as he rehearsed what would be discussed today.

Kaliningrad City Hall, Kaliningrad, USSR

As the helicopter came to a landing, Orlov followed the German off and led him inside the City Hall and into a meeting room. Taking a seat, Orlov said “Would you like water or something else perhaps? If not we can get started with whatever you have first on your list of priorities.”

"Ah, I appreciate the offer. But I much rather get to business. Perhaps starting with something mutually beneficial; the restoration of old Königsberg. It would draw tourists to Kaliningrad, beautify the city, and symbolize a new era in EU-Soviet relations." Said Lindner.

“What exactly did you have in mind for this restoration? As far as splitting of cost and the scope of it?” Orlov asked as a took a sip of water, mulling the idea in his head.

"The scope would be the reconstruction of important historical buildings like the Königsberg Castle as well as the restoration of remaining structures exteriors to their original condition." Lindner said before adding on: "Frankly until there is a survey, we won't know the cost of the project. But the funding can be covered in part by donations and grants from UNESCO."

“Well I am definitely open to laying the groundwork for this with a survey et cetera. After that we can work out all of the respective details.” Orlov said.

Taking a sip of water again he said “Now is there anything further regarding the project you’d like to discuss or shall we move on?”

"I think it is best if we move on. Trade perhaps." Lindner mussed

“Very well. The USSR is very interested in increasing our trade with the EU nations, perhaps even working towards a future free trade deal. I believe that both sides only stand to benefit from such a move. What are your thoughts?” Orlov asked.

"I am in agreement. Free trade is mutually beneficial in many regards. The problem, the thorn in my side over this will be the Baltics and the former Eastern Bloc nations in the EU. They are notorious in regards to ruining the best thought out EU plans." Replied Lindner.

“Very true. And I suppose the…. troubled history between my nation and theirs doesn’t help. Nevertheless, I believe it is something we must strive for. Perhaps one on one meetings will help grease the gears so to speak?” Orlov proposed.

"Perhaps. Perhaps. Though I cannot speak with certainty if that would work." Said Lindner before slightly changing topics. "What is the USSR's plan for a future where fossil fuels are redundant?"

“Well as you know under President Putin the Soviet economy embarked on a plan of diversification of our economy and to great effect. While fossil fuels are still a major element of our economy, it is no longer the only thing keeping us going. On a domestic front, I plan on increasing, through free-market ideals, the prediction, and usage of electric vehicles and other alternative fuels. Why do you ask?” Orlov replied.

"Interesting. The reason I ask is because eventually Germany, the EU, the World will stop purchasing fossil fuels. And you may know, that deadline is approaching rapidly. A major part of the EU-Soviet trade is in hydrocarbons, and it is clear that those resources are on their way out. So then the question is, what will replace that key trade cornerstone?" Lindner explained.

“We still do possess vast amounts of many other natural resources. But even besides that, the Soviet Union is a wealth of everything from food products to manufactured goods of all categories. I’m confident that these things can fill in the gaps of hydrocarbons. Not to mention we are in a position to export energy in more eco-friendly forms.” Orlov insisted.

"That is something only the future will tell. Much like how the future will vindicate what my predecessors and I have been saying all along, advice not heeded." Lindner said as he shook his head before saying: "Is there anything you wish to discuss?"

“Yes, I wanted to discuss working together to push back against the unwanted influence of… a certain authoritarian socialist state. I believe that China going unchecked poses a major threat to both the USSR and the EU, not to mention the wider world at large.” Orlov said bluntly.

"That may be where you are wrong Mr. President." Lindner retorted bluntly. "China is very much a threat in it's own ways, but the greatest threat to stability in my experience as Chancellor has been extremist movements like Euroscepticisim, isolationism, and protectionism. It is these seemingly mundane issues that can wreck a nation. Look no further than the UK if you have any doubts."

“I agree with you Mr. Chancellor, but I don’t believe we should ignore the threat China poses. All I am saying is I think that a bilateral plan to contain China would be beneficial.” Orlov said.

"Mr. President, China is distant for those of us in Europe, a foreign land of great interest, but separated by thousands of kilometers. Simply China isn't perceived as a threat. If anything, I regret to inform you that some in Europe still view the USSR as the single largest threat to their nations. And for us in Germany---both in the government and outside of it---see the death of a European identity and of European unity, as the greatest threat." Lindner explained.

“I understand but the Chinese have a worldwide ambition. An ambition I believe we should be weary of. Regardless, I understand your concerns with internal matters. Now is there anything else we shall discuss?” Orlov asked.

"Perhaps it is best if this meeting is continued at a later date." Lindner sugessted.

“Very well Mr. Chancellor. I believe that we will have a solid relationship in the coming years.” Orlov replied.

January 23, 2021, 2:25 pm, Havana, Cuba

Julio sat at his desk in the presidential residence, having just signed multiple executive orders aimed at remedying the damage left by communism in Cuba. He had also drafted his first bill, which he called the Liberate Cuba Act, which would completely legalize private enterprise and have 90% of state owned market properties sold off, which would put $26 billion US dollars into the treasury. Julio planned to use the money to improve infrastructure across Cuba, put much-needed money into the pockets of Cubans, and purchase better equipment for all branches of the Cuban military. He was relishing in his accomplishment when the phone on his desk rang. Julio quickly answered.

"Hello?", he spoke into the phone.
"Greetings, Mr. President.", said the Minister of State on the other side of the phone.
Julio:"Ah yes, what do you have for me?"
MoS:"Well, you know the situation in Argentina?"
Julio: "Yes, what about it? Do you suggest sending aid?"
MoS : "Actually, yes, I think we should."
Julio: "I think we should wait until this bill of mine passes. Once we have money left over, then we send aid."
MoS: "Yes, that could be best. On other news, the Soviet President has requested an audience with you as soon as possible."
Julio: "Hmm... I just might hook him up on that."
MoS: "Well, then, anything else, Mr. President?"
Julio: "Have an envoy sent to Washington D.C. If we don't get American sanctions lifted, this state that Cuba's in isn't going anywhere."

Official Statement from the Cuban State Ministry

"The Republic of Cuba hereby deeply thanks all nations supporting our democratic transition. We will need the utmost respect amongst our fellow nations if our transformation will go anywhere, so all of the support is more than welcome.

Speaking of support, we have noticed that mum is the word from Washington. The United States is perhaps the biggest player in Cuba's future, as many sanctions pressed on us come from America. We plead with America to consider negotiations to lift sanctions, otherwise Cuba will not be able to move forward politically, economically, and socially."

Santiago, Chile

The former Miss Universe sat in her car, looking outside her window. It was late at night. How would she tell her son? She was crying, but not so much for the death of Carlos than for the prospect of telling their son that his father was dead. They had visited him some weeks before, but it seemed he would get better. Her phone blipped again, so she turned it off. Messages both directly to her or through Social Media. The news of the Former President’s death spread. Hopefully Máximo would be asleep. Hopefully. She could not count on a hope. The former model grabbed her phone once more and turned it on again.

“You awake?” She asked, then sighed. “Come home… No, I’m not mad. I just need you to be home.” She said, with some pauses, then made a long one, pinching her near-perfect nose bridge with her left-hand fingers. “Your father. He had an attack. I have just been told that he didn’t survive…” Her words read more like a flushing of a dam, a contained sentence that she wished she could hold a bit longer. “I know it was sudden. Maxi, I’m sorry. Want me to come and get you?”
Some words exchanged across the line. “Maybe you can’t drive… I am going to get you.”
She hung up and threw the phone to the other seat, holding her head. It wasn’t as bad as she feared, but it was bad nevertheless. Maximo was at some party. He could have heard from his friends. It was a good call to phone him. The car started and she drove through the suburbs, always climbing the hills towards the edge of the city. A flash of images came to her mind. Pictures of Carlos’s first son. Zulema claims still he was assassinated. Would they dare to do the same to her? To Máximo? Cecilia Bolocco could not fathom that fear. She just pressed the pedal and sped towards the party.

The phone rang as she stopped. The lights of the house reflected on the windshield. But it was somewhat quite for a party. That startled her for a second, but then imagined Máximo had told his friends, and that they decided to make the environment less festive. She glimpsed at the name on the panel of her car. Zulema.
“Zul…”
Cecilia. I take it you heard.
“Yes. I am sorry.”
Thanks. It’s been strange. We were gathered in my sister’s house. Then we got a call that Carlos was having an attack. By the time I got there he was gone.
“How is your girl?”
She’s… holding. We expected this outcome. Máximo?
“We didn’t expect it. He didn’t. I am picking him up now.”
You should. Listen. Somebody tipped me that he wasn’t alone when the attack begun, and that the person cannot be found. I know what you think of me, but please be careful.

Cecilia seemed to hesitate. She knew Zulema’s conspiracy theories. But she couldn’t just dismiss them. Not after she thought about them too. Not when they were both just widowed to the same man.
“Thank you, Zul. I will take care. You too. I will book a flight…”
No, don’t come. It’s not safe. I will let you know.
The other phone was silent for a second, then Zulema hung up, leaving Cecilia in her car perplexed and even more scared.

Buenos Aires, Argentina
January 29th.

The Argentine Economy plummeted in ways that brought back memories. It seemed as though the departure of Carlos Menem, the former President between 1989 and 1999, brought with it one last bitter joke. Almost as a reliving of the final years of Menem, prices rose even faster, and some Government programs in the farther Provinces were shut down. In Buenos Aires things seemed to be somewhat well-headed for the time being, but an overall sensation of stagnation quickly overtook the streets. People flocked to the banks to withdraw their savings, and this made many fear that there would be a new Corralito, which further fueled the panic.

It’s Friday, so when the Government announced the suspension of Bank Activities on Saturday and Sunday the effects were not as scary as previously believed, it seemed the economy would survive another weekend.

“One day of a drop… One day!” The President of the Central Bank, Pasce, said furiously in his office. He would have to work till late. “And it wasn’t even related to Menem?” He enquired to his attachés, who stood still before his desk. “This has already made talking to our creditors almost impossible.”
“There is so much we can do, sir.” One of them replied, almost embarrassed at their impotence. “On Monday the market will not crush, it will shut down entirely.”
“Explain…” Pasce demanded.

“The perception is that our economy can collapse under a whim. We can barely explain today’s fluctuation through some odd words being used in the news last night. But in reality its just a faster crumble of the entire system that’s been coming down since last week. There is just no trust, and at first it was on the creditors and investors part. Now its permeating to the people. On Monday the trickling of people heading to the banks will become a flood.”

He had to inform the president. He had to do something.

“What about Government funding?” Alberto Fernandez asked Pasce.
“It will remain, partially. The Provinces will be hit the worse.” He declared. Both sat on opposing couches on the Casa Rosada. “Some Social Security funds will probably dry up In Tucumán and Salta. You could maybe safe the energy sector on Neuquén, but if nothing’s done the entire Patagonia will be running without funds to keep functioning, it will glide down as long as it can.”
“I still don’t fully comprehend how this happened…”

Pasce wasn’t entirely sure either. “International investors largely look to our political situation. Last month hasn’t been entirely beneficial. As such there has been a reduction on international investment, and an increase in the push towards recapitalizing. Some businesses are closing down, but the banks are so far holding most of the pressure, offering credits. Except they are reaching a point at which they will have to use the Dollars. Once that floor it touched it will be a massive capital leak, the banks will show, and investment will stop entirely. Within a week unemployment could reach historic levels.”

Fernandez crossed his fingers over the desk, sighing. “How much?”
Pasce didn’t doubt. “Between nine and twelve per-cent, according to our most conservative estimates. Up to thirty if the worse scenario plays out.”
Fernandez opened wide his eyes and looked straight at the man. “Which is?”
“A complete collection of debt to the private level, both from foreign and national investors.”

January 30th

A procession of people entered the Blue Hall of the Congress. It was a humble shadow of the masses that flooded the place when Maradona passed away months before. But it was a steady stream of people slowly moving into the hall. Mostly middle-aged or a bit older. They were usually wearing slightly informal attires. One every then came with more formal garments, mostly black. They approached the center of the marble-sided room and passed by a cordon between them and the former President.
Carlos Saul Menem laid in a black wooden coffin. His remains covered with an Argentine Flag, but atop it the flag of the Province of La Rioja, his Provincial Homeland. At the head of the coffin overlooked a Christian Crucifix and a Muslim Crescent and Star. A guard of the Patricios stood watch on the remains, coldly guarding the Former President. The People passed under their scrutiny in silence, giving faint looks and solemn smiles to the family. His ex-wife and daughter stood nearby. They seemed affected.

But it wasn’t a lot of people. An old man approached the ex-wife, Zulema, and whispered at her ear. She considered it for a couple of seconds and nodded. At a gesture given to the guards and some of the Congress Staff the cordon was opened on a side, and people were allowed to come to the coffin itself and say a couple of silent words to the unhearing body within, or to say something to the family. Two grandsons of the former president were there as well, and an older cousin of them who showed up to show support, standing watch on a side. People began to walk into the perimeter and whisper.

“I don’t care what they say. You were the greatest of the last decades…”
“I recall aiding your campaign in the 80s…”
“I owe your husband my life. I hope you find rest as well.”
“Somebody like you is what we need.”
“Your Grandad was great. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise…”
This bastard had my son killed…

Zulema opened wide his eyes. The man passed before her as he whispered. Slightly caned, probably in his fifties. He walked towards the coffin, and the family was in shock. The man spoke up. “He covered up his shit and blew up the evidence. My son was…”

The guards standing by the coffin turned to him. Two facing him, the others keeping their eyes wide open. All of them using their sabers as weapons.
“Stand back!”
“…He was nine! He suffered for years. And this bastard…”
“BACK I SAID!” The saber was laying on the man’s chest. He cried.
“I hope my son faces him. I will be there soon to join him…”
The man raised his left hand, showing the Guard a trigger, wired to the sleeve of his jacket. He then swiftly moved his right hand, and opened fire with a revolver. The sword found the chin of the man..

The following explosion made the coffin drop to a side, partially on fire. People was already running before, but not Menem’s family. The three shots were largely un-aimed, but one proved deadly. The former wife of the defunct was shot and bled down on the floor. The Guard who stabbed the man was across the room, his insides ripped. The old man was nowhere to be seen, and fifteen minutes after Congress Staff declared the emergency the State was announcing that a terrorist attack had been perpetrated at the funeral at the very heart of the Republic.

January 31st. Buenos Aires.

Official Statement Regarding the January 30th Events.

As it is known to the public, on January 29th former President Carlos Saúl Menem passed away after a short but intense battle with an urinary infection and a long-live heart condition. The funerary rites, which respected the known wishes of the late President and those of the family, were organized by the Vicepresident of the Nation, Cristina Fernández. As stipulated by the Vicepresident the Blue Chamber at Congress was comodated for the public wake at which the Argentine People and friends of the late President could say their final goodbyes and support the family. At the event the first wife of Carlos Menem, Zulema F. Yoma, her daughter Zulema María and her two sons, Luca and Facundo. Other friends and relatives joined the family.
As the wake progressed a situation progressed at which a man, now identified as Estefano Quiroga, age 47, attending as one of those willing to pay homage to the deceased, threatened the family and approached the coffin. One of the guards, a member of the Infantry Regiment N° 1 <<Patricios>>, Lieutenant Horacio d’Ardieros, faced the intruder. According to witnesses d’Ardieros issued his ceremonial blade to make defense of the body, at that moment Quiroga detonated an explosive vest he carried, only after issuing three shots against the family of the Former President.
Both d’Arderios and one of his comrades died instantly. Another member of the <<Patricios>> was pronounced dead short after arriving at the Dr. Cosme Argerich Hospital. President Menem’s former wife, Zulema F. Yoma, was also killed in the incident, having been shot in the neck by Quiroga. Her grandson, Luca, was also wounded by gunshot, but was stabilized upon reaching the aforementioned hospital. The rest of the family suffered varying wounds of moderate to benign gravity, and are all as of now out of danger. Due to the shrapnel of the explosion several other attended were affected. Twelve more amongst friends, family and the general public were killed, and forty-seven more wounded, two remaining in life-threatening conditions.

It is still uncertain what motivated this attack, and no evidence as of now suggests that Quiroga acted assisted. It is known that Quiroga inhabited the city of Rio Tercero in 1995, but any motivation arising from the explosion that happened that year at that city is only speculation at the moment.

Argentine Security forces and Police both National-wise in the Provicial level are working tirelessly to clear the matter and bring either justice or closure to the victims of such an attack.

Signed.
Felipe Carlos Solá. Minister of Foreign Relationships, International Commerce and Cult.

Prime Minister's Residence
Tokyo, Japan
January 21, 2021 JST

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sat in his office, watching the new American administration being sworn in. Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Finance Tarō Asō, sitting in a chair next to him, noted "This administration will not be as friendly towards our plans for modernization as the last one."

Abe turned off the TV. "Don't worry, they have bigger issues on their plate. Their chief concern in Asia is China, so I doubt they will punish us for seeking to defend ourselves from China."

Asō nodded. "Do you plan on watching the test tomorrow sir?"

Abe shrugged. I will be attending our missile drills in north Honshu. They are more important than an obsolete weapon incomparable to what our enemies have. Kishi will attend in my place."

Asō nodded again. "Of course. What of the China plan?"

Abe smiled. "According to my commanders, the fleet will set out by the 25th for the Senkaku Islands for our 'survey.'"

A small crowd of military commanders, government ministers, soldiers, and scientists watched from a distance as a C-130 flew overhead escorted by 2 F-15Js. Overhead, parachute could be seen being released as the bay door opened. Out came a massive bomb, the biggest Japan had ever possessed in history, cruising down to Earth.

It seemed to unfold in slow motion as the bomb exploded sending a sizable cloud of fire and smoke into the air as the 16,000 pound bomb detonated. It was very similar to the BLU-82, but it meant much more to Japan. This bomb represented new Japanese capability and militarization, a break from the past. Several soldiers and ministers could be seen arms raised in the air, shouting a joyful "Tenno Heika Banzai!" Celebrating the new Japan, and the possibility of a future with bigger and more powerful weapons.

As a Japanese E-2 Hawkeye flew overhead, Prime Minister Abe sat with several generals from the Air Force and Army in a stand overseeing a dozen Type 12 Kai Surface to Surface missile launchers on a beach, near five Type 37 Medium Ballistic Missile launchers. Soldiers ran back and forth manning their weapon systems as they prepared for launch. Abe had a small grin, having finally delivered on the promise to gain offensive capabilities. Now Japan sat capable of launching preemptive strikes on North Korean nuclear missile silos without having to rely on any other nation.

He turned when he watched in awe as the order to fire was given and missiles flew in rapid succession, each Type 12 launcher firing 6 missiles towards their designated targets. A total of 72 missiles arced up into the air, aimed at open sea just 25 miles west of the location in a zone that had been cleared of civilian traffic after nations notified a day prior. Next was the Type 37 Ballistic Missiles, similar in range to the Perishing II each launcher firing their unarmed missile at a target 1,000 miles away.

As Abe left the test site he made a remark to a reporter, "Our test marks a new age of safe, reliable, Japanese deterrence. Today we remind our enemies that we can strike them if they attempt to do us harm or pose a threat to the peace and stability of the region."
A proud Conservative.

“Well, Abe apparently is as tone-deaf as ever.” Vice Admiral Zachary Hill looked at the visiting civilian with a raised eyebrow. Julia Martin looked every inch the analyst that she was. A casual style of dress, glasses, and an unassuming face complimented a sharp, focused mind. And, as Deputy National Security Advisor, those were exactly the tools needed to furnish the leaders of the American military with proper appraisals of situations. It didn’t hurt that her comment about the Japanese Prime Minister was, in Admiral Hill’s opinion, exactly correct. “You would be correct, ma’am. Prime Minister Abe has long held that Japan needs a proper military to be truly safe. With the revision of Article Nine, he has the ability to make that military. And, as evidenced by their missile program, they don’t care about the consequences.”
“The Chinese are definitely going to be unhappy about this. They’re going to demand an end to Japanese tests. They haven’t been thrilled with Japan’s military reforms to begin with and neither have the Koreans.”
“Miss Martin, far be it from me to tell the DNSA how to advise the President but the Japanese are going too far. They call this deterrence but are apparently blind to the position they are putting us in. Under the Security Treaty, we are required to defend Japan from attack. At this rate, they are going to force the hand of the Chinese. And we are in no position for a war with a major power. I truly believe that we need to lay down the law with Japan. We cannot support their move in this direction.” Martin looked at Hill and said, “Admiral, you are suggesting that we deliver an ultimatum to one of our oldest allies?”
“Yes.”
“Alright, Admiral. To be perfectly honest with you, the NSC has been saying that for the last four years. Maybe this new president will actually listen to us.”

United States
January-March 2021

The aftermath of Brexit was still only just being realized. The British economy was in tatters, the Government reeling from special elections, and hundreds of thousands of people had taken to the streets in protest. For America, Britain was more than just a friendly European nation. They were a major economic partner and military ally. In the first session of Congress, a bill had been proposed to provide a four-year economic aid plan for the UK, totaling $40 billion by 2024.
The UK wasn’t the only issue in Europe. Italy had inadvertently recognized Taiwan as an independent state, creating room for a confrontation with China. In the same breath, the Italians appeared to ignore the disaster that Brexit had been, arguing in favor of further distancing Italy from the EU.

In Cuba, protests against the Communist regime were picking up. The capitol had been stormed and the Government had resigned. A new provisional government appeared to have been formed, though it remained to be seen if that would last.
To add further complications in Latin America, a series of explosions and political protests were ravaging Argentina. In the last couple of weeks, dozens had been killed or maimed in apparently unconnected explosions. One was at a battery shop, evidently the result of battery acid mishandling. The other was a clear terrorist act at the wake for the former president. But with little intelligence, there was little the United States could do but wait.

To improve relations with the USSR, President Wilkerson offered an invitation to the Soviet President in order to hold a meeting, suggesting an itinerary that would include increased US support in the War on Terror and the expansion of economic, political, and military cooperation in Europe and Central Asia.

Fleet Problem XXIX was scheduled for later this year. Heavily classified, it would be the largest US Navy Exercise of the 21st century, involving the entire 3rd Fleet. While the details were highly compartmentalized and dispersed on a need to know basis, it would involve CSGs 1, 3, and 9 with LCSS-1 and the Port Royal against CSG 11 and ESG 3 with DESRON 31 representing the OPFOR.

A proposal was on the table for restructuring the Infantry Brigade to improve its combat effectiveness. Slow moving with mostly leg infantry, the IBCT was, in its current structure, ineffective on the modern battlefield. The proposal would disband one of the three infantry battalions to allow the standing up of a Special Troops Battalion. The Special Troops Battalion would become the home of the Military Intelligence and Signal Companies, as well as receiving an Electronic Warfare Company and an Air Defense Company. The Engineer Battalion would receive a fourth sapper platoon and would reorganize the two horizontal engineer platoons into a horizontal engineer company with three horizontal platoons and a route clearance platoon. An EOD platoon would be added to the EB headquarters. The Cavalry Squadron would gain a 92-man mounted troop and a 28-man dismounted troop. Finally, the two remaining Infantry Battalions would be increased from one 4-platoon heavy weapons company to two 3-platoon heavy weapons companies each. Reorganizing all of the IBCTs in the Army in this way would open 1,200 positions within the Army for other units. Several options were available for those positions, either adding 60-men to the artillery battalions or being used to stand up additional units in other key areas. One suggestion was to reform the Long Range Surveillance units disbanded in 2018. The proposal would require careful thought before either being accepted or rejected but it was clear that change would be needed to keep the IBCT relevant.

The Next Generation Combat Vehicle Program was humming along well. The Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle was beginning to reach field units, while progress was being made on the Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle and Mobile Protected Firepower systems. The OMFV had two possibilities, between General Dynamic’s Griffin III IFV and Raytheon-Rheinmetall’s KF-41. The General Dynamics Griffin II was competing against BAE’s modernized M8 Armored Gun System in Soldier Vehicle Assessment Trials that would run through June. Additionally, the Light and Medium Remote Combat Vehicles were finishing their prototype trials and were ready to move to SVA trials. Finally, the Decisive Lethality Platform prototypes were expected by 2023.
The Next Generation Squad Weapon, set to replace the M249 and M4 with a 6.8mm rifle, was advancing on schedule, with a final design set to be decided on by 2022. A pair of .338 medium machine guns were also in competition for replacing the M240.

The President’s insistence on Criminal Justice Reform was already seeing results. Non-violent drug convicts were on their way out of prison while legislation was being proposed that would take sentencing power away from prosecuting attorneys and turn it over to judges. Funds for body cams, additional law enforcement training, and increasing funding available for social workers to handle mental health situations. The United States, ostensibly the Land of the Free, was home to the largest population of incarcerated persons in the world. Reform was necessary but, at the same time, couldn’t be done willy-nilly. In addition to changes seeking to reduce officer involved shootings and reduce prison sentences for non-violent offenders, several studies were commissioned to determine the best methods for reforming the criminal justice system.

Statement of the American President on the US withdrawal from the Open Skies Treaty

Throughout history, war has been a constant worry. Every government in history has been forced to ask the question, “What is my neighbor doing? Where are their troops? What are their intentions?” For centuries, all anyone had to go on was guesswork and the word of spies. But guesswork is spotty at best and espionage is a dangerous field. So, at the height of the Cold War, with the threat of nuclear annihilation hanging over the world, the Open Skies Treaty was crafted. Though initially rejected, it was eventually agreed to and ratified in 1992. It ushered in an era of calm, allowing NATO and the Warsaw Pact to see what the other was doing without fear of reprisal. It allowed there to be certainty about intentions and actions.

Or it did, until my predecessor made a grave error. On the Twenty-second of November of 2020, the United States formally withdrew from the treaty. It was the last in a series of disastrous foreign policy moves made by my predecessor, a series of moves that have had lasting consequences. It is my intention to correct those errors and I will start with the Open Skies Treaty.

I am asking the USSR and the nations of NATO to forgive this lapse in judgement and I am asking the United States Congress to once again ratify the Open Skies Treaty. I ask this in the interest of continued cooperation with our NATO allies and continued peace and cooperation with the USSR.

I will also ask for the support of NATO and the USSR with expanding the membership of the Treaty. Continued peace and stability on an international level depends on access to information. Misunderstandings about the movements of military forces can and do lead to conflict and loss of life. In the interest of creating a better, more peaceful world for future generations, I encourage the nations of the world to consider ratification of this treaty. And I encourage all nations to pursue diplomacy and dialogue before resorting to rash measures.

March 2, 2021; 12:07; Havana, Cuba

Acting President Julio Eduardo-Gutierrez stood at a podium inside the press room in the Presidential Residence. He stacked some papers, laid them on the counter, and began to speak to a room that was, for the first time ever, filled with reporters from privately-owned news stations from Cuba and from across the world.

"People of Cuba, I just want to say that I am grateful for this opportunity to bring this great nation forward from such hardships we faced under communism. The recent passage of my Liberate Cuba Act officially killed off Cuban communism for good. It will also help our economy recover, and improve the military so that we can better protect our newfound liberty. Also, recently included in the bill, we will send 3 billion US Dollars in economic aid to our neighbors in Argentina. Recent events spurred by an economic recession were brought to my attention and I came to the conclusion to aid them during this crisis. For those Argentines over there suffering, help is on the way. Moving on, you may remember that in my inauguration address I said I would bring Cuba back onto the global stage. Well, I am thrilled to inform you all that I have sent an application for Cuba to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, as well as the United Nations General Assembly. I truly believe increased international cooperation will bring Cuba to a much brighter future, which is the reason I made the applications. More changes and announcements will be coming in the near future, so stay tuned."

Coast Guard Law Protects Chinese Sovereignty

Image

CHINA-Our esteemed government has passed a new law authorizing the Chinese People's Armed Police Force Coast Guard Corps to open fire on non-Chinese vessels operating in waters that are rightfully Chinese. Already foreign nations have begun protesting the righteous law without reason. Our People's Republic stands firm in the face of foreign pressure, and will not cease to protect Chinese sovereignty. President Xi has authorized the People's Liberation Army Navy to support the Coast Guard if necessary in enforcing Chinese sovereignty.

The PLAN has announced it will hold live-fire exercises, notably including the carrier Shandong, with the Coast Guard in the western Pacific to demonstrate Chinese intent to uphold its sovereignty. Warmly welcome the law and support it, people of China. For with the law China's rightful control over territories in the western Pacific shall be enforced. The law shall oppose the grip American imperialists have on the region. Oppose imperialism, support the law that will tear it down. Glory to the People's Republic of China!

Government Announces Improvement of Benefits for Uyghurs

WESTERN CHINA-Today the office of President Xi Jinping announced greater benefits for the Uyghur minority. In the press release, the government reaffirmed how all citizens of China are equal under the law, no matter their ethnicity, including the Uyghurs. Thus, our esteemed government declares, the government shall work to make the lives of the Uyghurs in western China as comfortable as that of other Chinese in eastern China. This includes development of infrastructure in areas where the Uyghurs have lived.

The government announced plans to build freeways, suburban areas, hospitals, apartment blocks, and power plants. In the press release the government mentioned that this was to reduce poverty in China and increase jobs in western China. However, the government included the announcement an encouragement of secularism among the citizens of the People's Republic of China.

"We encourage all the citizens of the People's Republic of China to embrace secularism and guide themselves by the principles of socialism and Xi Jinping Thought. In this way the People's Republic of China shall remain united and strong, strengthening to face threats of imperialism seeking to undermine China internally and abroad."
According to reports from our esteemed government construction firms have already begun building infrastructure in western China.

Finally, the announcement ended with an encouragement to embrace and rejoice for the labors our glorious government under our esteemed leader Xi Jinping is doing for the people of the People's Republic of China. They pointed out the lies and slander propagated in the West about untrue Chinese abuses against the Uyghur people. We encourage those not to join in spreading false narratives and listen to our honest government. Do not support opposition groups that spread these lies and seek to divide and undermine the people.

Rome, Italy

Prime Minister Matteo Salvini is reading his morning newspaper with a hot cup of coffee and a plate of scrambled eggs with cheese sitting on his desk. Matteo narrowed his eyes at what that bastard Xinping has said. So think they can beat United States on the world stage. Well think again stronzo because the U.S. Military is the best in the world both economically and militarily. Matteo thought. He buzzed the intercom getting his secretary who answered in Italian, "Sì, presidente del Consiglio Salvini. Cosa posso fare per me oggi?" He answered back, "Per favore, chiamatemi i Ministri della Difesa e degli Affari Esteri. Ho bisogno di loro per qualcosa di importante." Minister of Defense Alberto Santini and Minister of Foreign Affairs Umberto Santini who happened to be twins enter the Prime Minister's office. Alberto is the first to speak, "Ci ha chiamato signor Primo Ministro, signore." Matteo to the two men he had the most trust in, "Sì, davvero. Avete visto l'articolo sul giornale stamattina sulla Cina?" Umberto nodded his head, "In effetti abbiamo il signor Primo Ministro. Entrambi troviamo l'articolo molto preoccupante. Cosa abbiamo in programma di fare riguardo a questo signore?" Matteo frowned looking at each man in the eye, "Non c'è niente che l'Italia possa fare da sola, ma se possiamo convocare un incontro tra i leader dell'intera Unione Europea e l'Organizzazione del Trattato del Nord Atlantico allora forse possiamo fare qualcosa. Potremmo anche invitare il Presidente dell'Unione Sovietica Sovereign. Anche le repubbliche a questo incontro ". After this the meeting the two ministers went of to do their jobs.
