United States: divide Washington into two states?

Postby Consigahria » Tue Jan 19, 2021 12:16 am

In the United States, lawmakers are considering dividing Washington State into two states, the state of Washington and the state of Liberty. I for one do not endorse this. I think it's a stupid idea. The state of Washington has been around for a very long time and there is no sufficient evidence that they (meaning the part of Washington that wants to become the state of Liberty) are culturally different from the rest of Washington.

What are your thoughts on this? Should Washington be divided into two states, or should it remain one state? Why?

The United States dividing is too reminiscent of the civil war for me, no. Opposed.

Calling it Liberty would be akin to calling North Korea the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. It would be anything but.

I thought we agreed that Northern California would be called Jefferson, a much more worthy name for a worthy state.

What is it with some Americans and doubling down on using the word "Liberty" to try and convince the rest of the world they've totally got droves of it?

Let me guess, this is an attempt by the Republicans who would never elect a single President ever again by popular vote and are slowly approaching a point where they will never be able to elect one by Electoral College either rigging the map in their favor (plus two Senate seats!)

The disenfranchisement of rural people is bad, so this is a good idea

It's more a chronic feeling of non-representation in Olympia by the entire portion of the state east of the Cascades. It's not without merit.

Well I prefer decentralization of authority across the board. If this leads to that in even a small way, so be it.

Also the last few elections have shown Urban-Rural is far more of a factor in voting patterns than region is like it used to be, so it makes sense to create new states so rural people who are disenfranchised aren’t ignored

Isn't Washington essentially North Oregon and West Idaho already?
Since Lillorainen's geography is currently being overhauled a 'tiny' bit, most information on it posted before December 12, 2018, is not entirely reliable anymore. Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

I'd have said American-affiliated British Columbia.

I mean in that case it would easier to just put in a popular vote and do away with the electoral college. That way everyone is represented equally.

Locked for insufficient OP.

A) The contention in the OP is unsourced; who are these lawmakers? Is there any external evidence that this suggestion is in any way realistic?

B) The OP does not offer their own opinion.

Two potential remedies if the OP would like to try again:

1) Provide an external link to the story, and state your own opinion.

2) Simply state that in your opinion it would be desirable to split Washington State, and briefly outline why; in this case no external link is required.
