[DRAFT] Manic Street Peepers

Postby Frieden-und Freudenland » Sun Jan 17, 2021 3:24 pm

Inspiration: https://bigthink.com/strange-maps/germany-street-view

P.S. I couldn't find if Google has an NS version. I feel like it is so important that it should exist, but as I said, I could not see it. Let me know if you know if a Google reference has been used before.

[desc]World-famous tech-giant Whoogle provides a service called Whoogle Street View. Volunteers all around the globe run or drive through streets with a 3D camera and the images are then processed to create a realistic virtual 3D map of the city streets, which users can navigate online. As Whoogle is looking to expand the coverage of this service, citizens are debating whether @@NAME@@ should get on board as well.

[validity]has internet

1. [option]"Woah, that's gonna be so cool!" vociferates your teenage cousin, giggling excitedly. "All these different towns and cities, at your fingertips. You don't have to get off your chair to see all the landmarks or the celebrities' houses on Sunset Avenue... and uhm, uploading our 3D maps on Whoogle would probably be a good advertisement and increase our tourism revenue or something, no?"

[effect]the location of @@NAME@@'s top secret research laboratories is plainly visible to all foreign spies

2. [option]"Oh my, this is a terrible idea!" exclaims your aunt, instinctively pulling her cardigan tighter around her shoulders and crossing her arms. "All our houses and businesses broadcast to the world without our consent, burglars virtually exploring entrances and exits to buildings, lecherous men lurking on their computers to see if they can catch a glimpse of a young lady like me through an open curtain... Disgusting. If you have a modicum of respect for the privacy of your citizens, you won't allow this travesty to happen. Right, darling?"

[effect]@@NAME@@'s new tourism slogan is 'you have to see it to see it'

3. [option]"Oh, I am pretty sure we can alleviate these privacy concerns in exchange for a small fee," chimes in Whoogle CEO Barry Leaf, flashing a broad smile. "First of all, volunteers can film the streets at a scheduled time, so all residents would know about it and could take necessary precautions, like closing their curtains." He smiles at your aunt, who fidgets in her chair uncomfortably. "We can also pixelate bystanders' faces and remove any buildings that people don't want to be included in Whoogle Street View. What do you say?"

[effect]@@NAME@@'s streets on Whoogle are littered with pixelated bums of mooners
[validity]capitalist

3. [option]"Oh, I am pretty sure we can alleviate these privacy concerns in exchange for a small fee," chimes in Socialist Peoples' Director of Boogle Barry Leaf, flashing a broad smile. P.S. I am open to smarter title suggestions.

I think this issue is solid, it reads very smoothly. I think option one could use a bit more... motive, I guess. As it currently stands, option one just seems like a sillier version of option three, I don't really see many people choosing it.
One: Allow street view because... celebrities or tourism or something.
Three: Allow street view but in a way that doesn't restrict civil freedoms or privacy, in a way that harms no one.

Also, I'm not sure how issues are actually coded into the game, but this very easily seems like it could work for socialist nations too, with a change of description from Boogle as a private business to Boogle as a joint internet service between several socialist nations.
Seventh(?) time not dead nation.

These are all good points. Thanks, Lelscrep.

I added to Option 3 that the CEO demands a small fee for going into the trouble of editing pictures for privacy, etc. That should work towards making #1 and #3 non-equivalent.

Good point about socialism. I guess I was being "denkfaul" as Germans say. :p We give up on socialism too easily. Indeed, the issue could be accommodated for socialist nations. I just removed the mention that Boogle was from the United Federation. It is still implied that it could be a foreign company, but who is to say it is not from East Lebatuck? ;) The CEO is also given a different title for the socialist version.

Option 5- Perfect opportunity to boost our tourism industry. Make sure that only the nice areas are available on Boogle Street View and don't allow photography of slums or industrial area

I can't think of one either, but in my drafts I've always gone for Whoogle, to go with the existing WhoTube.

[desc]World-famous tech-giant Boogle recently unveiled a new service called Boogle Street View. Volunteers all around the globe run or drive through streets with a 3D camera and the images are then processed to create a realistic virtual 3D map of the city streets, which users can navigate online. With both excitement and privacy concerns over the service mounting, citizens are debating whether @@NAME@@ should get on board as well.

My only worry here is that it seems odd to call this a new service when RL Streetview has been going for FOURTEEN years now. You may be like me, living in shock that we are now living in a weird Star Trek future that would have been inconceivable to us as kids*. I mean, I can now talk to my computer, and tell it to play pretty much any film or music ever. HOW COOL IS REAL LIFE NOW? Anyway, point being that Streetview can't really be pitched as an up and coming thing any more.

Is there a way to reframe this issue to assume that Street View already exists but that Whoogle/Boogle simply want to get more complete coverage?

(*and yes, you're clearly old like me. The issue title gives it away. :) )

OK, I called it Whoogle and rephrased the description to say they are looking to expand the coverage of a service that they are already providing.

Regarding age issues, c'mon, I think I am 10-12 years younger than you, but still a millennial and old enough to know about the Manic Street Preachers. I was 15 when Your Love Alone Is Not Enough came out, I think this was the first time I became aware of them :p and still listen to them with joy to this day.
