Does the state control all media in your country?

Postby The United Confederacy of the Americas » Sun Jan 03, 2021 7:59 pm

we have a government rating board that rates and at times ban anything found dangerous, they rate all movies, tv shows, video games, books, plays, radio broadcasts, etc. We have outlawed rap music as a danger to society and the state due to its violent and dangerous lyrics that worship cop killing and belittle out great women. News in all forms is controlled by the state, all media is reviewed by a board of censors to see if it is legal to publish, anyone caught with illegal material is arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Any anti-slavery propaganda is immediately taken care of with extreme prejudice and those found guilty are given hard labor, sent to reeducation camps, or executed.

The state has a monopoly on television (only TVP1, TVP2, TVP Info, TVP Historia, TVP Kultura and TVP ABC are allowed to display).
The internet in the Polish People's Republic is controlled by the state, too. The western websites and social medias have been banned.
Running a private radio station without consent of the government is illegal.
When it comes to the private press (including internet), there is considerable freedom of speech.

Yes, all major media outlets are state-owned, though the government has only minor restrictions on the content of them.

we don't control the media, only control it when we must like when a news media starts publishing hate speech, inciting criminal activities or talking about how birds shouldn't be allowed to become citizens of our nation
It's okay to cry. Crying is something we have all done, so why do you not let your feelings out?

No, but our nation does have its own broadcasting channel for political news.
Trenakan National News, Wednesday, May 12th BREAKING NEWS: An amendment to the Trenakan Constitution is proposed in the Reprasentantenhäus, proposing that presidential elections in the future use ranked-choice voting, instead of first past the post voting. It is thought to have bipartisan support, with a majority of Trenakans from all parties supporting it. However, President Schmidt has said that he opposes ranked-choice voting, which could sway enough legislators against voting for it to halt the proposal from reaching a 2/3 majority.

The Aikolandais Government neither controls nor censors all media in our nation. We do have a state-owned public broadcaster that formerly had a monopoly on radio broadcasting (until 1973) and officially had a monopoly on television broadcasting until 1970, when the first private television channel in our nation began broadcasting. (We say 'officially' as cable television was introduced in the early 1960s to allow access to French television channels, but what was then-known as Société Télévision Aikoland had a legal monopoly on television broadcasting from within Aikoland)

Oh. The first time we tried doing that, there was a week worth of riots and an government building almost burned down. People though we'd turn totalitarian if we controlled all media. After that, we keep our distance. But there is an law that has all media outlets report truthfully and transparently.

Most TV and Radio broadcasters are owned by either the federal government or state governments, or both have stakes, however, they operate independently and many regional variants exist. Public TV and Radio is payed with a small TV license fee upon the purchase of a television or radio set. Civilian cooperative media exist but are not free to use or have advertisements in them to help funding. State owned but not controlled because of constitutional law guaranteeing freedom of the press and open expression of culture, in general many governments, especially the imperial one, take a hands off approach. Usually every TV or radio sold in the Realm has free access to the basic package of stations and channels that all come from publicly owned media. Though we do have a channels that are jointly owned between the Federal Government and other governments like with France, and the stations Arte. Of course some states have their own public media specific to their language like in Hungarian, Czech, Polish, Ukrainian, Serb-Croatian, Romanian, and Ruthenian. However, some regions can get foreign stations and channels from Poland, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Romania, Russia, and Serbia.

In the overseas territories they have their own networks, but also access to other networks, but like internet streaming is more popular because of infrastructure disparities.

No, the freedom of the press is constitutionally enshrined and protected by our nation's laws. While this freedom is not carte blanche for the media to do whatever it wants (we obviously have laws in place to prevent the broadcasting of known falsehoods, slander, and things are just illegal like calls for violence), it does mean that the state itself does not control any form of media (outside of obvious things such as press releases from the government). Even the GBC, our nation's public broadcaster, which is owned by the state operates independently and the Government of the Democratic Republic is forbidden from interfering with its content.

There is one publicly funded broadcasting network and the state is constitutionally prevented from dictating or otherwise interfering with its coverage. However, independent watchdogs have found that it is much more likely to take a pro-Government stance than its privately owned peers, regardless of which party is in power.

No. Most media outlets are autonomous cooperatives. They are subject to oversight by the Union of Journalists and Reporters, but the law heavily restricts the ability of the UJR to control content.

There is a state-run media outlet, the Public Information Center. However, the PIC's function is to serve as a clearinghouse of information, and does not do any independent reporting. Since 2005, the primary focus of the PIC is maintaining its website (, which collects and summarizes the news as reported by all Mevraqi media outlets. Most people consider the PIC a secondary source, and mostly refer to it when major outlets disagree about current events.

The state does indeed control all media, though not always through direct ownership of the platforms.

ALL content meant for mass distribution, or limited distribution with the intent for it to go viral, MUST be approved by the Bureau of Propaganda prior to release. This includes video games, fiction books, and movies as well as news, commentary, and non-fiction productions such as biographies, history shows, and educational programming. It also includes advertising - a category that includes spam, as well as the more traditional forms.

The definition of "mass distribution" is that more than 5 people are intended to see it, or that it can reasonably be expected to have a good possibility of going viral. There is only one exemption, and that is for those communicating with direct members of their own lines (families) - with content not reasonably expected to be of interest to anyone outside of the line. This is the sort of content that those within the line usually aren't actually interested in either, but are spammed with anyway, such as pictures of some kid's Sapience Day celebration.

Penalties for violation are severe. Individuals who violate this law, regardless of reason, will spend at least 1 year working in the mines as slaves with their bodies controlled by override chips. The maximum penalty is death. Assuming they don't draw a death penalty, they will also be banned from all media forever. Also, if they worked for a media company and used that company's resources for the creation, distribution, or promotion of the offending content, that company will be seized by the government and its controllers banned from working in media or owning any more media companies.

The death penalty applies if the material also violates laws on what it may contain, for instance by insulting or fomenting discontent with Leader Megatron, our nation, our culture, or our history, our government, our form of government, our laws, and other things of this nature.

There is no social media here. It's not expressly banned, but the wide-net definition of what counts as "mass media" makes social media impractical because nobody wants to have to submit their tweets or posts to the Bureau of Propaganda and then wait hours or a day to get approval before they can actually hit the "submit" button on the site. All forms of social media are classed as "mass media" due to their very nature.

Also, we will note that the term "propaganda" has no negative connotations here. It simply refers to propagating our viewpoints and culture (and censoring any opposing ones), much like it used to mean in places where the word has lost its original meaning. We simply didn't have language drift in that way. Also, we like to name our government agencies honestly instead of using euphemisms. It ensures that nobody gets any wacky ideas about what their mandates are.
