Organization of Regions

Postby Skeptical Wondering » Wed May 05, 2010 9:26 pm

Hello, I'm rather new to the game and I would like to be able to find regions that suit my tastes. But I can't seem to find a good way to do this. Is there a way to find, say, all the autocratic regions? Or all the libertarian regions?

No, I don't think so. It took me a few days before I found a decent leftist region.

Unfortunately, no. On the plus side, this won't matter in most regions; comparatively few of the thousands of regions in NS are actually organized along political lines in an ideological way.

It matters a little more if you're looking a regional government system in practice. Some regions are definitely more democratic than others, some may appear democratic while actually being run by an oligarchy, and some may emphasize a '"hereditary" system of royalty that is far more open to change and contributions from newcomers than other apparently more democratic regions.

So, it depends on what you're looking for. If you know what sort of region you might like to join, I can suggest a few from those with an active forum government, although I'm not as familiar with some of the newer regions in NS these days.

Thank you both for your replies.

Naivetry,

I am looking for a democratic government which, while open to new ideas, does not immediately accept any new idea but carefully considers the idea before implementing it. So I guess a thoughtful democracy, if there is such a term. If that region also happens to discuss political theory, or the philosophy around governments, laws, and politics so much the better. Thanking you in advance!

Oh, goodness. Sorry for taking so long to respond (had family in town all last week).

Let's see. Liberty Alliance used to write a lot of very detailed legislation, and I know they welcome new people. I'd recommend Philosophy 115, except they aren't very organized as a government; they tend to limit their discussions to the RMB. Equilism (sorry, can't help it...) would also fit the description; we love a good debate, some of which you should be able to see even before you register from our World Assembly voting threads. For openness to new ideas, I'd say you should probably stay away from the Pacifics, although both The South Pacific and The East Pacific have been a little more flexible these days. Neither gets much into the discussion of political theory, as far as I know.

Openness to new ideas is the measure I'm having trouble with, because it's something you only get to see from really getting involved in the government and trying things out, which I haven't had time to do in more than my own region. There are a lot of other democratic (sometimes Parliamentary) regions I could suggest - places like International Democratic Union or Liberalia/Technopolis. I'm not sure how their government works, per se, but you may also want to look at Ulthar, which is uniquely focused on studying the mechanics of NS.

Again, I'm not as familiar with most of the newer regions, but the ones I've mentioned all have enough history behind them not to change on a whim, and are still welcoming enough to take new players seriously and consider their ideas on their own merit. I've purposefully left off a number of active and democratic regions that seem more impulsive than thoughtful to me, but that's just an outsider's impression, and I'd be happy to hear suggestions from others who get out more these days.

Thank you Naivetry!

I can recommend other regions as well. Ulthar has ambassadors in regions containing 11% of NationStates and according to our Ambassadors in regions listed on our World Factbook Entry, there are some pretty cool communities out there.

So rather than too my own horn, I'll toot some of theirs.

Large, active military defender regions = 00000 A World Power, Texas, and Yggdrasil
Lighthearted RMB discussion for the like minded = Kittens Sanctuary, Philosophy115, The Free States of Gaia
Specialty regions with a specific theme = Haiku: RMB dedicated to haiku, The Skeleton Army: RP region raiding and carousing, Test Lab1: region dedicated to testing flags, adspam, and RMB posts
Inexplicably silly = Animal House

There are others, from small to gigantic. Each has a unique culture. Many of them list their "friends" on their WFE too. One way to find a home for a nation is to go and hang out for a while and find out if you feel like you fit in.
