It was over. It had been such a frustrating season, but a satisfying one as well. Team Blue had been devoid of any of the trouble they had gone through their first two seasons in the NSSCRA, ran up front and won races. But as the flag dropped to end the season, all was not well in the Team Blue Camp, specifically with Drake Stevenson and Taylor Henderson.

It happened midway through the race, when Drake was trying to pick up Hendo to move the two up to the front of the pack. Unfortunately, when that happened, Drake somehow got disconnected from the draft and never regained it for the rest of the race, which led to him streaming out a series of profanities over the radio. It was caught on the show “NSSCRA Radioactive” the next day.

And after the race, discuss it is what they did. Hendo was not pleased with Drake accusing him of not drafting him right, and made her feelings known.

“First of all, we’re supposed to be a team,” Taylor said. “You know this just as well as everyone. You were hee-hawing like a jackass in and out of line, I’ve got to keep going otherwise I would have lost the draft too!”

“But, Hendo, damn it!” Drake said, trying to come up with the right words.

“Damn it nothing, dude,” Taylor replied. She could see that he was, more than anything else, frustrated over a bad finish, and also understood that what he said in the heat of battle probably should be taken as exactly that – something said in the heat of battle.

“You know, you’re pissed off, and I get it. We’ll get ‘em next time,” Taylor said.

Meanwhile, Frank Bronson was sitting on the roof of his car on pit road, watching the Valentians celebrate the NSSCRA title for Anastasia Aye. The Valentians had come into the NSSCRA at the same time the Hapiloppians did, but somehow or another, the Valentians had much better fortune, much better luck than the Haps. Bronson only had three wins in the NSSCRA to his credit, and as he sat there, he couldn’t help but wonder what he could have done differently.

He was so happy for the Valentians, though. All of Team Blue was. They loved the Valentians – those quirky, interesting fellows who were wonderful to everyone, and now they had received the reward they so deserved. One day, Frank thought, that would be someone from Team Blue hoisting the NSSCRA trophy. Maybe it’d be Drake. Maybe it’d be Hendo. Or maybe it’d be Chris Holmes. How sweet that would be, Frank thought.

But as he sat there, it hit him. He had to stay with Team Blue. His driving days were over, and he’d stay as a representative of the team, a driver coach to help out the three drivers. Team Blue always worked best with a driver consultant helping the three drivers out, and the driver consultant the team had this season wasn’t much help.

Eventually, he got off the car and walked back to the Team Blue Center, quietly packed his things up and got ready to head home. He said nothing to anyone. Even on the flight back, Frank stayed about as quiet as could be, thinking about his career. Thinking about he had gotten started so many years ago, how he worked his way up through the ranks so quickly before winning the HASCAR Challenge Cup at the age of 19. And then he struggled and struggled afterwards after his team folded the next year, trying so hard yet failing to replicate the same success he had the year he won the Challenge Cup. The critics said he didn’t have it. His championship-winning year was a fluke, a lot of people said. But those that knew, and we mean truly knew, knew that his problem was the bad luck when his team closed, and he had poor equipment. Frank could only carry that poor equipment so far. One of those that knew was Ken Henson, then the head of Team Blue. In 2018, Henson offered a deal to Bronson to drive for Team Blue in the team’s foray into the NSSCRA.

It was the chance Frank needed, and he made the most of it. He started running up front again, winning races and contending for championships. He could at least show his critics that he had it. And that, more than anything else, made these last few years of his career a roaring success. He could show the world that when he did leave, he didn’t leave trying to cling onto the back of the pack. He left running up front, and that’s all that mattered to him.

As he flew home, Drake Stevenson, having gotten Jeremiah Brooke’s and Stacie Houston’s address from a teammate, finally got around to ordering that fruit basket, as well as a congratulatory message.

“I know y’all will be great parents,” Drake wrote in the message.

As Drake looked out the window of the Team Blue Shuttle, he saw Newmanistan get slowly smaller and smaller as the plane increased in altitude. It hadn’t seemed all that long ago when he was just so excited for the season to get going. He was convinced it was going to be a championship-winning season. But it wasn’t. It was, at the very least, a season he could be proud of. He had finally broken through and gotten that first win. All he knew was that next season was going to be better. He was sure of it.
