Creme rises to the top

Image

Victoria Stadium,

West Phoenician Mountain Lions First baseman Leesa Creme, rises to the top after scoring a run at the top of the 6th from a hit by Chiffon DeMac winning the day.

The West Phoenician Mountain Lions took on The Mobile Grays from Npc West Florida in the first match of the softball competition which is part of the Tri Sport Tournament.

While not as popular as baseball, softball in West Phoenicia has slowly built a solid fan base ever since their first international win at the World Softball Classic #3. The win helped to boost the West Phoenician Softball league which currently has 12 teams as well as boosting membership. Additional international wins have aided in securing softball as a growing sport in the nation.

The first 5 innings were non eventful in relations to runs scored.
West Phoenician pitcher Kara Goldsmith and the Npc West Florida pitcher both played a spectacular game, their pitching stopped both teams from gaining any advantages.
While both fielding teams stopped any stray balls hit from the batters.

It was the top of 6th that finally saw some action that fans had paid to see.
Leesa Creme scored a double, after hitting it out into outfield, which Joseph Kelly stumbled to catch, allowing Creme the opportunity to reach second base.

Second baseman Pearl Nguyen was next up to the plate. Pearl's first swing was a strike, but thr second, was a fly ball that was caught by Joseph Kelly, but not before Leesa eased onto third base.
Chiffon DeMac next took to the plate. An older member of the team at the age of 32, she had announced she would retire after playing one more season for the New Tudor Dames in the West Phoenician league.
Chiffon missed two fast pitches, an issue many in the league knew sje suffered from, fast balls were not her friend. However on the third pitch, she swung, clobbering the ball into right field. Allowing Leesa Creme the opportunity to make a break to the homepage, while Chiffon DeMac was tapped out by first baseman Johnny French.

West Phoenicians who attended the match, set the stadium ablaze with a chorus of cries of joy and celebration that a run had been scored and they were now in the lead.

After the single run score at the top of the 6th, the remainder of the match continued with both playing a strong defensive game, stopping any further runs from happening.
However Leesa Creme reigned in the first match by securing the only run.

Dunfermians débuter in softball: 5-4

"Dunfermian Young Grenadiers' début in international softball is a mild one but also a good one" - says Konrad Albinsson, team's coach. After seven dramatic innings, Young Grenadiers emerge victorious over Novowaldensian Slingers.

"I feared we would loose on 7th inning, as we were heading to the tie" - says Otto Bristow - "but with God's help we managed to win".

What saved the young team at the 7th inning was homerun. Matthias Wardrobe run the entire field, securing victory for his team.

In our interview with the team's manager, Mr. Forest Hawthrone, he expressed hopes that participation of Young Grenadiers (many of them are northerners) in the RCN Tournament will increase popularity of softball at home.

"Softball is something foreign to our compatriots, and we are the first team to participate in an international game" - remarks the Team's Manager.

"It's still early to augur what the Young Grenadiers will achieve in this tournament. But we already know that for us, the Northerners, this means a lot" - says one of the fans - "We finally have a sport team that have our fellows".

INT'L SOFTBALL TOURNEY OFF TO GOOD START

LOGON -- In the first Tri-Sport Tournament between several of our allied nations, a Fluvannian team has gotten off to a good start in the first leg. The first sport, softball, saw the Palmyra Lake Monsters of the Piedmont Softball Association shut out the Victorian Blue Flames of host nation Logon.

Given that the DSJ is a newspaper based in Oshkosh, and the Piedmont Softball Association is a semi-professional league from down south, it would be a valid criticism that we do not cover it nearly enough. Baseball and softball simply aren't as popular up north, where hockey, broomball, rallying, soccer, and even bandy in niches retain more popularity. That said, for our northern readers, allow us to offer a brief overview: the PSA is a semi-pro softball league consisting of eight teams from mostly southern and coastal regions of the Duchy of Piedmont. This is largely due to the popularity baseball has enjoyed in the Umitaku community, who are mostly resident of the same areas where the PSA is most popular. The Palmyra Lake Monsters are the reigning champions of the PSA, having won their third title during the 2019 season. Unlike some leagues -- though consistent with the National Hurling Association, which is also more popular down south -- the PSA operates as a league table format; there are no playoffs unless the final standings result in a tie at the top, in which case a best-of-three series occurs.

In a season shortened by a pandemic, the Lake Monsters showed they still have what it takes to win close games. Enter their first opponent, the Victorian Blue Flames. Emily Liberman put on a fantastic display from the mound all day for the hosts, recording ten strikeouts; Lake Monsters pitcher Peg Hilliard only notched five, but also recorded fewer walks. The Monsters fielding was definitely the upper hand; we tip our caps to the "Blues" for trying for a few stolen bases early. We also tip them to the Blues for learning relatively quick that wasn't a valid strategy. Hilliard and catcher Carl Fischk were a fantastic duo at picking off and beating the runner on attempted steals, and that kept the Blue Flames' baserunners from taking large leadoffs all night. There was finally a breakthrough in the top of the fifth, which began with Monsters first-basewoman Carla Yashirenshi pelting a ground ball up the middle to center field for a single. After centerfielder Victoria Sheen struck out, third-baseman Jani Peskinen launched a curving line drive to deep right field. Rachel Alpharia misjudged how the ball would carom off the wall and back towards center, but when she managed to corral the ball, she came up with an absolute rocket. Unfortunately for her, by that point Yashirenshi had already dashed to third, putting runners on the corners. Carl Fischk, not the smallest man we've seen by a long shot, came up to bat and sent the first pitch far out to center, but not quite far enough for a three-run blast. It was however far enough for Yashirenshi to tag up and run home to score the game's first run; Peskinen moved over to second. Peg Hillard next at the plate managed to hit it right to shortstop Robert Barrett, who turned the ball over to second-baseman Selena Rodriguez, who tagged a sliding Fischk for the double play to end the inning.

Unfortunately for the Blues, they were unable to generate any good scoring chances themselves through the remainder of the game. They did manage to turn up the defensive pressure, but were unable to get on the board themselves, and the 1-0 score meant that the Lake Monsters sit in the upper half of the standings, along with fellow winners, the West Phoenician Mountain Lions and the Young Grenadiers of Ravenspire, Dunferm.

National News Network|Lakahana Forona Sywila

- Chancelloral Grounds Stadium in Colstoone, Logon.
In the first Tri Sports competition the National Presidential Republic of West Florida has been doing quite well, winning half of our games and winning the last game 7-1. However the tournament is not done yet! The tournament is still going on, and while it is the republic has determined to set a example to younger nations and win a gold medal. As things are going now, it looks like we will succeed! With a home run happening in the middle of the 1st for the Greys, when Chad Workman was batting. However the game was not without its downsides, which includes a hit made in the bottom of the 1st, where Michael Bright hit the ball and it smacked ol’ Joseph Kelly in his nose and broke it, which sadly was the 4th time he broke something this year. Following that incident, the Greys scored 2 runs in a row without being overly hassled by the opposing team. Then, the Mountain Lions came up to bat, and scored a run at the bottom of the 2nd. Following that move, the Greys scored at every inning they were batting, with some innings they scored 2 runs.

LAKE MONSTERS SOFTBALL COMES UP SHORT AGAIN

COLSTONE, LOGON -- The Palmyra Lake Monsters' third game of the RCN Tri-Sport Tournament finished with the same margin of victory as the first two: a single run. Unfortunately for the Fluvannian representative in the tournament, that margin was against them for the second straight game, as the Lake Monsters were shut out by the Young Grenadiers of Ravenspire, Dunferm.

"We just couldn't get things going," said Lake Monsters coach Frank Terrance after the game. "We weren't seeing the ball well at the plate at all. Fielding was well enough, Peg didn't have her strongest outing on the mound, but she still did well enough that the few mistakes she made were ones her teammates could cover for. Wasn't really an issue of defense, if I'm honest."

Certainly an accurate assessment from where we sit. After Daisuke Zakamatsu gave up four runs in the second game against the New Waldensian national team, Hilliard returned to the mound for the third chapter, where she held the Young Grenadiers to a single run -- albeit a shot over the left field wall by Grenadiers catcher Quin Alger. The frustration in the Lake Monsters' dugout was apparent when, after his third strikeout of the evening, catcher Carl Fischk, known for having a bit more passion than some, split his bat over his leg on his way back to the dugout. Some of that anger was obviously redirected; Fischk made two tremendous throws on the night to stop attempted steals of second base by first baseman Kennard Armannson in the second inning and shortstop Stuart Amtena in the fifth. At a minimum, games remain against the Mobile Grays of NPC West Florida and the West Phoenician national softball team, known as the Mountain Lions. No word has yet been received from the organizers of the tournament if this is a single or double round-robin.

Waldensian Radio News, 101.3FM out of Valdenton

"It's 6:02pm, the weather in Valdenton is a cool 47° with drizzle and a light breeze out of the northeast. Traffic is moving sluggish across the metro, with several weather-related accidents. I'm Douglas Machen, with your evening news update."

"Parliament is still locked up in a dispute over funding of the Coast Guard, with military officials asking for an increase to bring on several new icebreakers while some MPs want to see an audit of spending over the past two years. Budget Chairman Roald Mussner is holding another hearing on the issue tomorrow afternoon."

"The homeless population in Valdenton may be getting some additional relief, as the Gospel Rescue Mission held a ribbon-cutting at their new branch on the south-side today. Attendees included the mayor and members of the philanthropic community who helped fund the new endeavor, which will be able to house up to 100 individuals with a kitchen that can feed 300 at a time."

"In the world of sports, New Waldensians can look to success in two ongoing international competitions. In the World Cup of Hockey, the Avalanche have advanced to the playoffs in a stunning development on the international stage. With a record of 6-1-3, the Avalanche edged out World Cup regulars from the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, making the playoff with the 16-seed. Coming up tonight is the matchup with 1-seed Cassadaigua.
