Need help with maps

How do you guys come up with maps for your nations? I can’t seem to find sites that work with me.
For example, how do I do this?

So about a month ago, I made this using GIMP (I don't have MS paint since I'm on a MacBook). I think it turned out ok, and something like this might work for you. I'm not sure what you would do if you want your nation to be a region of the planet though.

To be honest I’ve been having the exact same question.

For my map I just used MS paint but if you don't have windows you could always download something like Paint.net.
