[SUBMITTED] Nickel and Diming

Postby Jutsa » Thu Oct 08, 2020 7:50 pm

All suggestions welcome. Also, I have no idea how realistic this issue is, but it was still fun to make. :)
And, yes, I'm aware I'm using Macronesia again. :P

Title: Nickel and Diming
The Issue: You agreed to meet with the Prime Minister of Prudenlund, a tiny allied nation that holds close economic ties with @@NAME@@, on a request for assistance. It seems that pirates from Tasmania, a country embroiled in civil war resulting in little ability or care to patrol the high seas, have been raiding merchant ships from Prudenland, causing panic and significant economic disruption along your ally's ports.
Validity: Nautarky; Existent Military

Option 1: "It's not easy for a nation's leader to ask this sort of thing," states the Minister of Prudenlund, sipping tea while adjusting @@HIS@@ spectacles. "The fact of the matter is, we're losing money, and despite our own strength on the waters, we cannot afford to send out ships to protect every single cargo ship out on the high seas. That's where you come in. As a close ally and trading partner, we're humbly asking for your services. We're not talking escorting every last ship — just a few deployments to secure our trade lines with our other partners. In exchange we'll place a substantial discount on several of our goods. So... do we have a deal?"
[effect] the navy spends more time hanging out with friends than defending the nation's coastlines

Option 2: Your Financial Minister fingers you into another room while your secretary offers the Prime Minister another scone. "Look, I know we're all chummy chummy with the Prudes, but we're talking about compromising our security and national budget, here. They are not our responsibility, and I don't think they're going to suddenly stop being our allies if we say no. Tell you what. We'll offer them a small financial package to soothe our relations. Nothing significant. Merely enough to say, 'thanks, but no thanks'."
[effect] @@LEADER@@ has inadvertently subsidized foreign pirates

Option 3: You're about to walk back into the room when a MP catches you. "Why not blow them right out of the water? Hey, I'm just saying, those pirates might be a force to be reckoned with, and they're technically doing nothing illegal on international waters, but if the Tasmanian government is too 'occupied' to keep their problems away from us civilized nations, then we'll take care of them ourselves. Sink one of their ships under the assumption they're pirates; if they don't get the message, sink another one. And another. Not just for Prudenlund's safety, but our own, and everyone else's. Plus, it'd be a good way to project power."
[effect] @@LEADER@@ sunk Tasmania's battleship

Validity: Pirates
Option 4: "YARR!" cries Captain Hookbeard, swashbuckling his way in through an open window, startling everyone aside from the Prime Minister patiently waiting in the other room. "Ye maties are too soft! We oughta be plunderin' the Prudenlundian dabloons for yeselves! Nothin' would make those Tasmanians cry more than losing the booty to @@DEMONYMADJECTIVE@@ might!"
[effect] privateers raid ships hauling goods to @@NAME@@

Considering that in #889 Macronesians are the ones taking action against your acts piracy, I doubt they endorse piracy themselves, or have a weak enough government for non-sanctioned pirates to operate from there.

Hmm. Excellent point. Though it shouldn't be too hard to pick another nation to do the pirating.

Hypothetically Dàguó might work... :P
ed: Other possible candidates: Wezeltonia, Nova Syrupa, East Calypso, Tasmania, South Nobovindia, Albionia.

In modern-day real life Somalia is the nation best-known for piracy, which I'd place in the vicinity of Bigtopia or Maxtopia or Zompaboodaland on the NationStates map, though none is a perfect match.

For a more Caribbean feel, Manamana is known to have very lax law enforcement.

Hmm. Excellent point.

Probably will go with Bigtopia or Manamana. Both are good ideas.
I just hate using Bigtopia for literally everything.
(though I didn't personally use it yet, funnily enough.)

I'll probably go with Manamana, actually. I do like that idea. :)

Manamana isn't "a large oceanic nation with an impressive navy", though, just a small libertarian country that criminals can use as a base of operations because the local government can't be bothered to do something about it. (In the case of real-life Somalia, it's more that their country is ravaged by civil war and so the crippled vestige of the legitimate government can't do something about it even if they wanted to.)

In fact no present-day nation in real life practices government-sanctioned piracy, which isn't necessarily a reason to preclude it happening in NationStates, but it would still distance the issue from real-life relevance.

I genuinely just search and replaced Macronesia with Manamana. I'm sorry.

Hopefully everything needing change has been changed to things not needing change. <:)

edit: though, the crippled inability to do something about the pirates could be an interesting angle... hmm.
I'll definitely consider using Bigtopia after all. :P
Edit: And, note to self for later: Tasmania actually might just be the perfect candidate if I take that route. And I think I just might do that. :)

I like it! However, I do feel that option 4 is a bit thin, and the effect line especially is kind of drab (I understand it's a niche option, but it feels a bit tacked on in its current state).

Some minor editing suggestions:

has requested to meet up with you and request assistance.

Instead of using "request" twice, I'd just say something like "has requested your assistance" or "has met with you to request assistance."

It seems that pirates from Tasmania, a country embroiled in civil war resulting in little ability or care to patrol the high seas, have been raiding several merchant ships from Prudenlund

This reads a bit weirdly. Maybe say "have raided several merchant ships from Prudenland" or "have been raiding merchant ships..." instead.

We're asking you as a close ally and trading partner for your services.

Maybe "As a close ally and trading partner, we're humbly asking for your services."?

Why ask nation specifically? Can we assume that nation has the manpower to do something about it?
If you're against political parties who support the CCP, then vote against the Australian Labor Party
New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Aardern is so deeply in love with human rights and Muslim lives that she's actively going out of her way to refuse to acknowledge China's persecution of Uyghurs. It's impossible to love human rights & Muslim lives more than that!

Hmm. Good point. This issue wouldn't really be valid for nations with a small military. I'll add that to the validity.

Alrighty, I think I'll put this draft on "Last Call" for now.

I'll review it one last time when I actually have the time, but I'd like to get some of these drafts submitted so I can start uploading my new backlog of drafts.

Besides, this has been up for only half a year, and I think I like where it's gone. But, again, I'll have to take another, in-depth look at it. :)

Edit: Submitted! :D
