VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE REMOVES CHAIRWOMAN MANN
Chairwoman Led Out of Executive House at Gunpoint

PROTECTA NOVA--In a historic vote, Chairwoman Eliza Mann has been removed from office in the first Vote of No Confidence in the history of the Socialist States. The vote was called in response to the rampant military corruption scandal that implicated her in favoring military bases in areas of electoral support for funding, equipment and essential services. The scandal has come to be known as "Planegate," in reference to the initial F-16 crash investigation that discovered the corruption.

The vote was almost exactly split--121 YEA to 119 NAY, mostly along partisan lines with three key defections from the Christian Socialist Party, reflecting the deeply tenuous control that the CSP had over the Parliament. In light of the incredible split in the vote, CSP officials have publicly pledged to dissolve Parliament as soon as a new leader is chosen, which would force the election one month early, with ballots opening on October 1st and final count verification sometime between October 3rd and 5th.

The vote was held very quickly after Mann went on television and publicly refused to resign and the People's Court forced the vote, fearing a coup d'etat could be imminent. Mann was lead out of the Executive House by Army officials within five minutes of the vote, with the soldiers ordered by the court as well.

This is a developing story, and it is unknown what effects this historic dark moment in Shiatoruan history will have at this time. The CSP has not put forward a shortlist of potential candidates.

Chairwoman Joan Powers: What You Need to Know

In the early hours of the morning, September 24th, Parliament approved Joan Powers, the CSP representative of the Amelia Islands, as the 8th Chairwoman of the United Socialist States of Shiatoru. This is in the wake of Eliza Mann's removal from office. Within minutes, social media exploded with a new trend--"Who is she?" Here's what you need to know about the previously obscure representative.

She's a model CSP politican. Like many politicians from the Christian Socialist Party, Powers has been in power in the Amelia Islands since the first official election in Shiatoru in 1984. The Amelia Islands are the smallest state in the Union, with a population of only 3.4k, of which over 90% are white--a perfect encapsulation of the CSP's voting base, which has always been somewhat more to the center than other parties that brand themselves socialist.

She has few surprises in terms of policy. Throughout her nearly 40 years in office, Powers has consistently maintained the CSP party line--leftist policy with a dose of conservative flavor that calls back to the Midwestern US style that much of the American-descended population is fond of. The only major way she breaks from this seems to be in foreign policy--Powers is a staunch isolationist.

She has always been a critic of Mann. Ever since Mann first ran for the Executive Chair, Powers has been critical of her aggressive, theological rhetoric and militant foreign policy. She was one of the four key defections that removed her from power yesterday.

She has pledged to be a caretaker, and not for very long. As CSP leadership promised, Powers first act in office was to immediately dissolve the Parliament and hold the 2020 election a month early, on October 1st. In her speech on the order, she pledged that she would not campaign or make any major policy changes before the election, either foreign or domestic. "I am simply here right now to warm the seat and answer the phone," she said. Assuming the CSP loses its control over Parliament, she is set to be the shortest-serving Chair in the history of the nation, at a mere two weeks.
