An all-female cabinet?

Postby Allenstadt » Sun Sep 13, 2020 9:42 pm

Consider the following scenario.
The president/prime minister of the country you live in (real life country) has appointed a all-female cabinet. What would be your opinion on this matter? Would it be unfair to do this, or a great advancement of women's rights?

My opinion
I think that the cabinet should strive for a male-female balance rather than an all=female cabinet.

Cabinets should really be elected by the people, but I wouldn't be bothered if someone filled their cabinet with women exclusively. It's not like it's gonna be the start of some dictatorship of women.

Ideally, the most qualified should be a part of the cabinet. But since we're striving for equality and taking into account various barriers people face, it's better to have an equal male-female ratio than an all-woman cabinet.

But kinda related to cabinets, I prefer Maplewood cabinets. Hardwood is okay

I would think this is wrong. The male and female perspectives on issues are often equally valid but different. Also either gender could potentially be biased. I think they should strive for gender balance.

The only thing I care about when it comes to people running my country is how qualified they are for their job and what ideology they espouse. As long as those two criteria are filled and filled well I couldn't care less if they are all male, female or little green men from mars.
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

Just putting women into power is a liberal delusion of what is "feminist." Of course, representation matters, and women ought to be encouraged to participate in politics, but in the past, female world leaders have often been awful, not just on women's affairs but just in general (looking at you, Thatcher and Thatcher 2: Brexit Boogaloo) - so, clearly, just being a cis woman doesn't automatically give you the feminist card.

Power politics will exist with or without a female president or an all-female cabinet. As long as the structure remains the same, it will produce the same results.

No thanks. We've had enough things rebooted with an all-female cast to realise that novelty in composition tends to be a replacement for rather than a prelude to novelty in content.

Feminism is being destroyed by people who think putting women in all places of power is empowerment. Ensuring that a woman does not get denied a position of power or authority on the basis of her gender is more important than the latter, which is just a gimmick to make themselves look as a progressive leader to their people.

Were all male cabinets particularly damaging for the centuries they were the norm? Based on the experiences of recent times mixed cabinets don't seem much different in effect to single sex ones, so I doubt an all female cabinet would do anything much different.

The point is to not waste the human capital of some section of the population, by excluding them as a matter of course. Times are going to get tougher and we are going to need all the people with great abilities.

I think there was a joke about neoliberalism I heard once that went something like "neoliberalism: when it's a national issue 50% of slaveowners aren't women".
Hyperbolic, for sure, but kind of accurate; the problem isn't the male―female ratio, it's the fact that the whole thing inevitably corrupts over time and stops representing their people. Adding in a couple female billionaires doesn't really solve the whole... you know, "military-industrial-congressional complex" thing. Or the increasing militarization of police. Or the fact that certain plants are illegal because of religion in an ostensibly secular society. Or... you get the point. If someone's actually willing to tackle the actual issues rather than pandering to some claimed camraderie with the voter entirely on the basis of their gender.
For myself, I could not bring myself to vote for a Kamala Harris type (which is why I'm not voting Democratic, because let's be honest she's the Presidential nominee) because despite the fact she and I share a gender we're just about completely at odds otherwise.

Putting women in positions of power alone and giving men and women equal representation on the basis of having equal presentation isn't empowerment. If not for a democratically elected cabinet, the most qualified individuals should be selected. If it just so happens that it's all men, all women, or equally balanced, then so be it.

That would depend on the method used to appoint the ministers. If they were picked solely because they were female or due to the existence of a gender quota, then that would be discrimination against men and just plain wrong. But if they were picked based solely on personal merit and because all the male candidates really, REALLY suck at what they do (unlikely), then this is fair. Equality of opportunity trumps equality of outcome. The first form of equality is compatible with social liberal principles and a capitalist system. The second is more closely associated with Marxism and social democratic principles.

If the women are among the best in their field, then yes, I would definitely agree with it. If it was purely for political reasons like appealing to the hardcore feminists, then no. The thing that should be evaluated here is skill at their field, not anything else.
