Planet Earth, So Hot Right Now!

Postby Major-Tom » Mon Aug 17, 2020 2:27 pm

A news story that is unsurprising, we may just be seeing the new hottest day ever recorded with temperatures of 54.4C or 130F, being recorded in Death Valley.

See link, BBC News.

What could be the highest temperature ever reliably recorded on Earth - 130F (54.4C) - may have been reached in Death Valley National Park, California.
The recording is being verified by the US National Weather Service.
It comes amid a heatwave on the US's west coast, where temperatures are forecast to rise further this week.
The scorching conditions have led to two days of blackouts in California, after a power plant malfunctioned on Saturday.
"It's an oppressive heat and it's in your face," Brandi Stewart, who works at Death Valley National Park, told the BBC.
Ms Stewart has lived and worked at the national park on and off for five years. She spends a lot of her time indoors in August because it's simply too uncomfortable to be outside.
"When you walk outside it's like being hit in the face with a bunch of hairdryers," she said. "You feel the heat and it's like walking into an oven and the heat is just all around you."
What were the previous records?
Sunday's reading was recorded in Furnace Creek in Death Valley.
Before this, the highest temperature reliably recorded on Earth was 129.2F (54C) - also in Death Valley in 2013.
A higher reading of 134F, or 56.6C a century earlier, also in Death Valley, is disputed. It is believed by some modern weather experts to have been erroneous, along with several other searing temperatures recorded that summer.According to a 2016 analysis from weather historian Christopher Burt, other temperatures in the region recorded in 1913 do not corroborate the Death Valley reading.
Another record temperature for the planet - 131F, or 55C - was recorded in Tunisia in 1931, but Mr Burt said this reading, as well as others recorded in Africa during the colonial era, had "serious credibility issues".

I suppose the discussion really is how do we mitigate days like these? Because dangerous heatwaves like this, particularly in my native Southwest US, may soon render cities such as Phoenix, Yuma, Palm Springs, Lake Havasu City and others uninhabitable in the near future. And that asks the question, how the hell can we take climate inaction sitting down? Why would we assume that climate change is something that we shouldn't work aggressively to solve?

Yet some claim climate change is a hoax perpetrated by China because...because...because...because...

Idk. I guess it's easier to convince yourself everything is alright than to fix things when they aren't alright.

It's just so easy to see. From wildfires, floods, firenados in California, and deadly heatwaves that last for weeks as opposed to a day...to me climate change is already rearing its' ugly head and is killing folks, and yet it feels that save for avowed environmentalists, it's at the bottom of everyone's priority list.

Except we aren't. We have neither tried hard enough to stop it nor are most people preparing.

What happened to the 134*F record from Death Valley in like 1913? Has that officially been debunked like the Libya record has?

It's probably better to take such previous records with a grain of salt, considering the vast improvement in accuracy since then.

I wanna go to death valley and see what that feels like. A temperature over 120.

I don't know if you can really feel a temperature gradient at that point. 120+ might feel identical to 105.

It is 34°C here in Saskatoon, so I believe it.

I think that we've basically crossed the Rubicon when it comes to climate change, given nobody wants to do anything about it. I think the best we can do is prepare for the worst, given that the largest polluters are showing no signs of slowing down.

This. Absolutely this.

It's so ridiculously utopian to think all of humanity will band together when everybody knows the ones who can do the most are also the least affected by it. Look at COVID; we can barely scramble to organise when it does affect us - and that's with immediate and visible consequences. And people still think we can just magically get billions of people to suddenly focus on climate change? Ridiculous.

The ecocide is already happening, and poor, equatorial peoples are already bearing the brunt of it, despite being the least guilty of this sin. Until industrial power becomes irrelevant in the First World - either through technological ascension, or collapse - nothing is going to get done. China, even if it succeeds in transition to renewables before full industrialisation, can only do so much, and with the way the other world powers have been handling everything until now, it won't be enough.

The fuck is this shit? China has singlehandedly canceled out the collective reductions of the US, Canada and the entire EU.

Current emissions do not matter - the smog that US, Canada, and the EU have created during their industrialisation is still in the air, and their reducations have not done anything to change that.

Trends matter, though, and China is singlehandedly the biggest worldwide investor in renewables (at a time when, funnily enough, the EU's and NA's investments have either stagnated or declines), is the biggest producer of hydroelectricity, and are on track to beat Europe in every other renewable energy source and become the world's leaders in the field.

I'm not praising China, but this is an undeniable trend. It's also, like I said, not enough.

All I'm saying is we can give in to defeatism early or at least see if we can't mobilize enough to put something of a dent in carbon emissions. One option will result in catastrophic results, the other in not-as catastrophic results.

Our chance of disaster if we do nothing is 100%. Our chance of disaster if we try is maybe 50% at lowest and 75% at highest.

Those are the odds. Which sound more favorable?

Abolitionism in the North has leagued itself with Radical Democracy, and so the Slave Power was forced to ally itself with the Money Power; that is the great fact of the age.
