2020 Arvenian General Election (Debate/Closed)

Primary Thread: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=488657
Manifesto: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=489679&p=37505939#p37505939

The Kingdom of Arvenia is now due to hold election in 2020. It has been four years since the 2016 General Election, which was held a year after the short-lived reign of the Supreme Crisis Assembly. Since 2016, general elections are held every four years instead of six years, although the Prime Minister can have at least two terms.

This general election sees the country either elect a new PM or even re-elect the current one. The current Prime Minister is John Greatwall, the founder and leader of the Royal Assistance Party (previously known as the "Royal State Party").

This thread is for debate between the PM candidates. You can make questions for the candidates to answer during debate.

October 11: Major Candidates (RAP/ARP/ASDP/APDM/CNP/AGP/ERP)
October 12: Major Candidates (NRP/ACDP/PRP/AVF/ALP/SUP/RCP)
October 16: Radical Candidates (William Kenway vs Colonel Ernie Flanders)
October 17: Independent Candidates (Amanda Benásquez vs Shaun Wellington)

Major Candidate Debate 1

The major party leaders are fully prepared for the first debate of the 2020 Arvenian General Election. They were fully prepared and will now fight it out in a vocal manner (rather than a physical manner).

Moderator: "Here we got the current Prime Minister John Greatwall, who is the head of the ruling Royal Assistance Party, followed by opposition leaders George Santoro of the Arvenian Reform Party, Michael Wang of the Arvenian Self-Defense Party, Connor Benway of the Arvenian People's Democratic Movement, Tyrone Shakullah of the Civic National Party, Misato Sugiragi of the Arvenian Green Party and Joanne Holmes of the Equal Rights Party. So, how is it going, fellow candidates?"

PM John Greatwall: "I'm fine tonight."

George Santoro: "Me too."

Michael Wang: "Same here."

Connor Benway: "I'm ready for this debate."

Tyrone Shakullah: "I'm fine as well."

Misato Sugiragi: "I'm totally fine."

Joanne Holmes: "I'm fine."

Moderator: "Okay, here are our first questions."

OOC: Now it is your time to make questions for this debate.

Question 1: How could healthcare be improved from the present policies under the Royal Assistance Party, unless you are John Greatwall, in which case, why is the continuation of your administration’s policies beneficial and sufficient to the Arvenian people?
Question 2: Do you believe that the Arvenian economy is in good shape? If not, why would your economic plans improve the situation?
Question 3: To Mr. John Greatwall, what role does the monarchy still have to play in the modern era? To all candidates, is there still a need for the Arvenian monarchy?

Moderator: "All candidates agree that they will do so much to improve Arvenian lives and help move on from the Supreme Crisis Assembly, so their answer to this question is largely the same, but too complex to explain at this moment."

Hanshire wrote:Question 1: Do you think the World Assembly oversteps its boundaries and is sometimes invasive?

Answer 1
PM John Greatwall: "I haven't seen such thing yet."

George Santoro: "Me neither."

Michael Wang: "I don't think so, but I fear that the WA would do."

Connor Benway: "Only if the WA handle things like labour and immigration pretty badly."

Tyrone Shakullah: "Same as with what Connor said."

Misato Sugiragi: "Only if the WA messes up with the fight against global warming."

Joanne Holmes: "I haven't seen the WA overstep its boundaries yet."

Answer 2
PM John Greatwall: "No."

George Santoro: "No."

Michael Wang: "No."

Connor Benway: "No."

Tyrone Shakullah: "No."

Misato Sugiragi: "Hell no!!"

Joanne Holmes: "No."

Answer 3
PM John Greatwall: "Possibly yes."

George Santoro: "Yes, even though I don't promote conscription."

Michael Wang: "Yes, as the ASDP is supportive of compulsory conscription."

Connor Benway: "Yes, but I am not a fan of conscription."

Tyrone Shakullah: "Yes, but military service should be more voluntary."

Misato Sugiragi: "I support gender equality, but conscription is not a good idea."

Joanne Holmes: "Yes, but military service should be a voluntary thing for everyone."

Answer 4
PM John Greatwall: "I don't know."

George Santoro: "I don't think so."

Michael Wang: "Yes, as long as the crime rate remains high in our country."

Connor Benway: "I am not a fan of execution."

Tyrone Shakullah: "I don't think we should execute people, no matter how severe crime can be, because life should be valued."

Misato Sugiragi: "Death penalty is basically the same as murder."

Joanne Holmes: "Execution should be abolished in favor of imprisonment, rehabilitation, restraining order, community service and fines."

Answer 5
PM John Greatwall: "Both."

George Santoro: "Both, although prison reform is needed as well."

Michael Wang: "Both."

Connor Benway: "Both."

Tyrone Shakullah: "Both."

Misato Sugiragi: "I think prisons are for punishment, while rehabilitation should be used elsewhere like rehabilitation centers."

Joanne Holmes: "Both, although prison conditions should be improved and that there are other alternatives to imprisonment such as community service, restraining order, house arrest and fines."

Answer 6
PM John Greatwall: "I think so, although there should be some limits."

George Santoro: "Absolutely, they should participate in politics."

Michael Wang: "I am not sure about this."

Connor Benway: "I support full political participation for all immigrants."

Tyrone Shakullah: "I think so, but they must adhere to our constitutional values and stay honest in order to participate in our politics."

Misato Sugiragi: "I support full political participation for everyone, including immigrants."

Joanne Holmes: "They should participate, no matter what the law says."

Answer 1: "I believe that a conservative government should be helping the general population, no matter if it is big or small. My government would do anything to succeed in such complex situation."
Answer 2: All candidates agree that the economy is in good shape. But as long as it is not, they all got their own plans for the economy (see the primary debate thread for more information).
Answer 3: "I think the monarchy has the goal of symbolically representing our country and commanding our military. However, I think the monarchy should be given more influence in order to become an efficient branch of our government."
Regarding the third question, most candidates are neutral, since only the ACP is anti-monarchist.

Some Foreign Policy Questions...
Question 4: How will Arvenia support it’s allies and other democracies abroad?
Question 5: What do the candidates make of elections in other countries, such as Torisakia or Dalmannia? How confident do incumbent administrations appear to be in reelection?
Question 6: Will Arvenia join any international pacts to combat climate change?
Question 7: What would be Arvenia’s stance on foreign intervention if you become Prime Minister?

Question 6: Will Arvenia join any international pacts to combat climate change?
Question 7: What would be Arvenia’s stance on foreign intervention if you become Prime Minister?

Answer 4
PM John Greatwall: "It will be the same as during my administration. We will aid our allies against any threat, be it domestic or foreign. Regarding democracy, we would likely support other constitutional monarchies in order to preserve monarchism."

George Santoro: "We will not act militant, but we will diplomatically support our allies. Regarding democracy, we will do everything we can to promote and defend democracy."

Michael Wang: "Regarding this, we are better off supporting ourselves, since helping our allies equally amounts to joining military alliances, which my party is fiercely opposed to."

Connor Benway: "We will support both our allies and other democracies through any means necessary, be it diplomatic or economic. We will oppose any threat posed by fascists, communists, neoliberals and fundamentalists."

Tyrone Shakullah: "We will support both our allies and other democracies, as we all value democratic principles and civic nationhood. We would like to act more diplomatic, as we don't want to see a Third World War."

Misato Sugiragi: "We will do anything we can to support our allies and democratic values, as it is the same as supporting the environment and fighting against climate change."

Joanne Holmes: "We would like to defend our allies and other democracies, but only as long as that concerns gender equality, racial equality, disability rights, animal rights, labour rights and LGBT rights."

Answer 5
PM John Greatwall: "I don't know, but I think the incumbents would be as confident as I am."

George Santoro: "I doubt that it is true, but I hope elections are as swift and good as possible."

Michael Wang: "I have no say in this issue."

Connor Benway: "It depends on how confident incumbents are, but elections in other countries varies."

Tyrone Shakullah: "I agree with George."

Misato Sugiragi: "I find no difference between our elections and the other countries' elections, but I doubt about how confident incumbents are."

Joanne Holmes: "Same here. Confidence is complicated."

Answer 6
PM John Greatwall: "I think that is possible, because we can't let Earth die."

George Santoro: "That would be a big priority for us all."

Michael Wang: "I think our country is better off fighting climate change on its own."

Connor Benway: "I find it appropriate for our country to join the international fight against climate change."

Tyrone Shakullah: "We will do anything to preserve our natural resources and bring an end to climate change."

Misato Sugiragi: "I am very supportive of such pact, as I am a fierce supporter of green politics."

Joanne Holmes: "I would support such pact if it means to save billions of lives on this planet."

Answer 7
PM John Greatwall: "As I am the current Prime Minister, I will continue my policies, but modify them in order to make them more efficient than they are right now. Regarding foreign intervention, I would like for our country to fight against climate change and provide other countries with humanitarian aid."

George Santoro: "If I get elected, I will provide other countries with humanitarian aid, fight against climate change, put sanctions on authoritarian regimes and bring our troops home from the Middle East."

Michael Wang: "I would like to see our country rather stay away from foreign affairs, as we should focus more on our domestic affairs."

Connor Benway: "I would provide other countries with humanitarian aid, protect the environment, support immigration and fight against China's geopolitical influence. That country is basically brainwashing Western companies who are investing in its domestic market."

Tyrone Shakullah: "I would like to support humanitarian aid, preserve natural resources, manage immigration and oppose authoritarianism."

Misato Sugiragi: "If I get elected, I would focus more on fighting against climate change, which would be our largest priority so far."

Joanne Holmes: "I would like to try promote both social and economic equality on a global scale, with a secondary focus on humanitarian aid, fair trade and sustainable development."

Moderator: "Now, we got just two questions left. These are:"
Question 1: What would your economic policies be like?
Question 2: What would you do about COVID-19?

Answer 1
PM John Greatwall: "Same as my administration has right now. My government is dedicated to improving working conditions and expanding state investment."

George Santoro: "I would bring about economic reforms based on my liberal beliefs. We need to regulate the economy for the common good."

Michael Wang: "Our economy needs to be nationalized and that all trade should be supervised."

Connor Benway: "We need a socialist market economy."

Tyrone Shakullah: "We need a market economy that is nice to both rich people and poor people."

Misato Sugiragi: "We need a circular economy based on green politics, which would include carbon tax and green industry."

Joanne Holmes: "Our economic policies are all derived from social democracy, especially with a big focus on economic equality."

Answer 2
All the candidates have made it clear that they would do everything to end COVID-19 and stop it from worsening in Arvenia.

Moderator: "Well, that was all for the night. See you all for the next debate with the other major candidates."

OOC: The answer to the final question would be too long, so let's wrap this up.

Answer 1:
Jody Morrison: "Of course it must be illegal, because it goes against Christian faith. Couples who divorce in secret will risk both imprisonment and loss of custody."

Earl Gomez: "Since I advocate for the lack of government intervention, divorce should be a matter of privacy that the government has no say in, even though I believe that divorce shouldn't pander to feminism."

The other candidates rather thinks that divorce should be legal.

Answer 2:
The candidates seems to agree on this, although Jody thinks that parents should only adopt children who aren't non-Christian.

Answer 3:
Jody Morrison: "Yes, because only it can keep children in line. Without it, children would be rude and disobedient."

Earl Gomez: "All parents and teachers have the right to this, so the government shall not interfer or even ban it."

The other candidates fiercely opposes this, especially in regards to human rights.

Answer 4:
Earl Gomez: "I believe employers have the right to decide how they should pay their employees."

Arthur Barrow: "I agree on that."

The other candidates disagrees. They believe that minimum wage is compatible with labour rights and thus should stay.

Answer 5:
Jody Morrison: "Yes, church and state should be interwined, as well as replace Megandelanism with Christianity, since Megandelanism is less organized than Christianity."

The other candidates disagrees. They think church and state should stay separate, while Earl believes that Megandelanism can handle secularism well.

Answer 6:
The candidates agrees on this and say that they will do everything to celebrate Arvenian history, while Rayung specifically believes that Native Arvenian history should be celebrated as well.

Nova Kartago wrote:Question 1: How do you see the future of foreign relations with other nations?
Question 2: What is the party’s position on the slave trade practiced by some countries and on homosexuality?
Question 3: After the recent victory of the Socialist Party in the legislative elections in Nova Kartago, is there any initiative to establish diplomatic relations with this country, and what is your general view of it?
Question 4: As for economic policy, how is Arvenia looking towards a free market without customs taxes ?
Question 5: What is the party’s position on immigration ?
Question 6: Does Arvenia intend to enter into new military alliances if your party wins the elections?

Answer 1:
Rayung: "I believe our country should stick to its current foreign relations, while putting an emphasis on indigenous self-determination."

Jody Morrison: "I would like for our country to establish diplomatic, economic and military ties with Christian countries, thus ending relations with those who are Muslim, Buddhist, Jewish or even pro-LGBT."

Earl Gomez: "While I don't see a possibility in supporting international free trade, I would like for our country to stay in touch with our current allies."

Arthur Barrow: "Me and my party are not really into foreign affairs, but we support free trade. I hope free trade stays alive and well."

Léon Ferdinand: "I would like for our country to disregard globalization, while we stay in touch with some like-minded countries."

Dan Gupta: "While I oppose economic globalization, I still support international cooperation, while staying fiercely opposed to countries that are racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, conservative, capitalist, communist, fascist and nationalist."

Arnold Schatzmann: "I believe we should provide developing countries with unlimited amount of aid, while we stick to our current foreign relations."

Answer 2:
Rayung: "The NRP is both opposed to slavery and neutral on homosexuality."

Jody Morrison: "The ACDP is opposed to both slavery and homosexuality."

Earl Gomez: "The AVF is opposed to both slavery and homosexuality."

Arthur Barrow: "The ALP is opposed to slavery and supportive of homosexuality."

Léon Ferdinand: "The PRP is opposed to slavery and supportive of homosexuality."

Arnold Schatzmann: "The RCP is opposed to slavery and moderately supportive of homosexuality."

Answer 3:
Rayung: "I think so, as I hope the new government would be supportive of indigenous interests."

Jody Morrison: "I believe there will be an initiative to establish such relations, but I don't know if the new govenrment is pro-LGBT, pro-Zionist or even pro-Islamist."

Earl Gomez: "I believe that it is possible, but only as long as the new government doesn't pander to less conservative values."

Arthur Barrow: "I am not into foreign relations, but I belive there is going to be good relations between our country and Nova Kartago."

Léon Ferdinand: "I believe there will be an initiative to establish diplomatic ties with Nova Kartago, as I hope the SP is as socialist as my party."

Dan Gupta: "I believe this is possible and that we will do everything to support diversity."

Arnold Schatzmann: "I can support this, but I hope there will be a balance regarding trade and cooperation."

Answer 4:
Rayung: "I am supportive of fair trade, community-based economics and eco-friendly taxes."

Jody Morrison: "I am against any kind of free market, because free market is an absolute violation of Christian values and social justice. I prefer a social democratic economy mixed with Christian cultural values."

Earl Gomez: "I think we must limit free trade in order to protect our own industries, as well as decrease government spending."

Arthur Barrow: "I am supportive of a free market without tariffs."

Léon Ferdinand: "I believe our country is in need of both nationalization and tariffs."

Dan Gupta: "I think we should replace our free market economy with either a decentrally-planned economy or a socialist market economy. My view on tariffs is very mixed, so I can't explain it yet."

Arnold Schatzmann: "I believe the market should be used to solve many social issues, while it is regulated on behalf of public interest. Regarding customs, I think tariffs should be as moderate as regular taxes."

Answer 5:
Rayung: "I stand for moderate restrictions."

Jody Morrison: "I believe we should only accept Christian immigrants."

Earl Gomez: "I stand for moderate restrictions, although parts of my party are divided on this."

Arthur Barrow: "I believe in less restrictions."

Léon Ferdinand: "I prefer moderate restrictions."

Dan Gupta: "I believe immigration should be both legal and unregulated, because border control is oppressive and xenophobic."

Arnold Schatzmann: "I support moderate immigration control."

Answer 6:
Rayung: "I don't think so."

Jody Morrison: "I hope for at least a Christian alliance."

Earl Gomez: "I don't think so."

Arthur Barrow: "I am not interested in foreign relations."

Léon Ferdinand: "At least we should create a Pacific NATO."

Dan Gupta: "I don't support war."

Arnold Schatzmann: "I don't think so."

All candidates believes that they will do so that Arvenian culture stands out in many ways (depending on how each candidate would do this).

Moderator: "Now, we got just two questions left. These are:"
Question 1: What would your social policies be like?
Question 2: What would you do about COVID-19?

Answer 1
Rayung: "I promise to uphold the cultural values of my people."

Jody Morrison: "I want a socially conservative society that adheres to both Christian values and social justice."

Earl Gomez: "I want to ban abortion, prostitution, drugs, pornography, adultery, human enhancement and same-sex marriage, as well as leaving family matters to individual families, not the government."

Arthur Barrow: "I'm supportive of same-sex marriage, gender equality, cannabis legalization and weaker immigration control."

Léon Ferdinand: "I dedicate myself to upholding socialist values, protecting human rights, supporting gun control and opposing religious fundamentalism."

Dan Gupta: "I advocate for a society where there is equality for everyone, while there would also be unregulated immigration, drug legalization, gun control, free healthcare and progressive censorship."

Arnold Schatzmann: "I am neither conservative nor liberal in regards to social issues, but I will use our market economy to solve many social issues. There will also be support for need-based affirmative action, moderate gun control, moderate immigration control, mixed healthcare, direct democracy, common sense, youth rights, electoral reform, education reform and prison reform."

Answer 2
All the candidates have made it clear that they would do everything to end COVID-19 and stop it from worsening in Arvenia, although Arthur Barrow has no clear stance (since he is libertarian, of course).

Moderator: "Well, that was all for the night. See you all for the next debate with the more radical candidates."

Radical Candidate Debate

As the second debate ends, the third debate is about to start. This time, it will involve two radical candidates. It will be followed by a debate for the independent candidates.

Moderator: "Now that the previous debate has ended, let's introduce our next candidates. These are Colonel Ernie Flanders of the Arvenian Communist Party and William Kenway of the National Socialist Party. So, how is it going, fellow candidates?"

Col. Ernie Flanders: "I'm fine, comrade."

William Kenway: "I'm alright, just as long as this commie doesn't win."

Col. Ernie Flanders: "Hey, shut up, you fascist pig!"

Moderator: "Okay, okay, calm down now. Here are our first questions."

OOC: Now it is your time to make questions for this debate.

Col. Ernie Flanders: "It is simple. We should replace our free market economy with centralized planning, because economic inequality is a product of capitalism."

William Kenway: "I believe we should create a new economic system that is neither capitalist nor communist, although it is not similar to that of the Third Reich or other similar states."

Col. Ernie Flanders: "That's simple too. Capitalism is to be blamed for social inequality, so the ACP wants to improve our social lives through any means necessary."

William Kenway: "Ha, I prefer getting rid of all strangers and freaks that are roaming our beautiful country. They are to be blamed for social inequality."
