[ISSUE DRAFT]: The God Illusion

Postby Allenstadt » Tue Aug 04, 2020 8:50 pm

After @@RANDOMFEMALENAME@@, an important theologian, allegedly proved that the Violetist god exists, the government is in disarray. While he has only released the paper to the government and not to the public, there is considerable worry as to what to do with @@HIS@@/@@HE@@/@@HIM@@.

Issue validity: the nations must not have state-controlled media, and cannot be a theocracy or have state-mandated atheism.

1. 'This is an disaster!' squeaks @@RANDOMNAME@@, your Minister for Secularism. 'Violetists are barely a tenth of our population; but if anyone catches wind of this, they'll want to be the ruling class! There might be a civil war! We must pay off this scholar before all hell breaks loose!

Result: Anti-governemnt philosophers are among the nation's richest citizens.

2. 'Why waste money?" questions the head of your secret service, @@RANDOMNAME@@. We could just as easily make her ... disappear.

Result: Being a successful theologian has its risks.

3. Your minister for the Free Press stands up, outraged. 'I cannot believe you can even think of doing this! That woman must be allowed to publish whatever she wants whenever she wants! We do have free speech, you know...'

Result: The book 'How to Assassinate @@LEADER@@ is a bestseller.

4. Your brother, who's not supposed to be here, looks up from his phone. 'The Minister has a point. If you make all media state-owned, you wouldn't have this problem.

Result: The 'hour with the Opposition' has been replaced with the 'Ideological Purity Hour'.

5. Richard Dowkins, author of the book 'the Deity Delusion', calls you on your phone. He says 'I heard about this. Give me a few months, and I'll be able to debunk the fraud, so no harm done.'

Result: Atheists and Theists are reduced to tears on the debate stage.

This might be a violation of player autonomy/beliefs, particularly with the description not just suggesting but affirming that this deity exists. You may want to base the issue around evidence of the god existing instead, or some other premise in which there is still a way in which the player can still cast doubt on the existence of the deity, if they so choose.
Stay safe, be kind, and have a great day! :)

I added 'allegedly' to the issue, and the 4th issue allows you to disprove the theologian.

It says Violetist god, even though our savior Violet is a goddess. Violet could probably do.

Some of your quotation marks differ. Make them all “ and not ‘.

Effect lines don’t start in capital letters.

Option 2 is missing quotation marks.

I think you should add more elements into the premise that hint at the scientist proving the existence of this divine entity to be a fraud, or a phony scientist. Otherwise you risk running antagonizing people, because a lot of nations are played as Christian, or Islamic nations or other major religions. Encountering an issue like this wouldn't go over well with them, I believe (I hope I will be corrected if I am wrong). "Allegedly" isn't really enough I'd feel and I am missing the element of how exactly this scientist managed to do this. If you added something in about some obscure divine communication, like the seance supposedly organised by Andrija Puharich, that would allow people to more easily dismiss this as fake, if that is the way they would want to approach this issue. Plus, it would make for a fun gimmick in the premise :P

Jokes aside, Violetism is a joke, and should be treated as such. Now back to my “actual” views.

Heresy! May Violet’s evil alien bunny-knights devour thou like a mind-carrot!

Absolutely! Violetism is a joke and I'd treat it as one myself (seeing as I am not that religious myself anyway). However, I can imagine that this would go over poorly with players who do put a lot of their religion into their nation. Nothing wrong with that of course, it's just a concern I have around this issue draft :)

My point was agreeing with you, and saying that OP should put more emphasis on the joke parts, to make it more obvious that it’s a joke, such as the Grand High Poobah.

Atheist players may also take exception to the notion that any deity has been proven to exist.

Just a thought, rather than having it be proven, you could have the theologian successfully predict several unlikely events before they happened.
which also opens up the possibility that she may have caused them?

Oh, without a doubt! It's why I think adding more hints at the scientist being not all too credible, would be a good way to lessen the truthfulness of the research :)

I'd like to note that this has actually been used in Issue #924 which has a pretty hilarious title.
