The Chiefdom of Copper Cuprum is a small island nation located somewhere in between the Lazarus Ocean and the northern waters of the region of Esportiva. According to local legends, the Chiefdom was founded back in 537 AD when Chief Wun of Wa Wun (currently known as the capital city Wa Deg) and his confederation defeated the confederation of Chief Nor of Ken Nor, subjugating the latter and forcing the surviving chiefs to swear fealty to Chief Wun and only Chief Wun. However, the Chiefdom would not be discovered by another nation until 1914 when the Fleftic Navy was searching for the daughter of then-President Rufus Wole Mensah, whose ship had vanished in a strong storm near the island. The discovery of the island, compounded by the fact that the Chief of Copper Cuprum at the time, Zed, had married Fatimah Aliramah Mensah, resulted in a sudden and unexpected alliance between Copper Cuprum and Abanhfleft that lasts to this day.

As far as sports goes, rugby league is definitely the most popular sport in Copper Cuprum, having been brought here by Abanhfleft-based Presbyterian missionaries who introduced the sport to the Copperite people as a way of connecting. The reputation of rugby league was cemented in the collective psyche of the Copperite people when a team of thirteen locals assembled by Chief Zed squared off against a team of missionaries and won. The ritual of the Copperite national rugby league team killing a chicken before the start of a match also started in this first game against the missionaries, and undoubtedly the team's victory ensured that the ritual would be seen as a good luck charm by the Copperites. The primary currency in Copper Cuprum is the copper coin, but the Fleftic new penenk, Espo, and NS dollar are also accepted as legal tender since carrying fistfuls of copper coins is practically an art form that only the Copperites have managed to master.

This is the first time that Copper Cuprum will be participating in the Rugby League World Cup. Rugby league is the most popular code of rugby football in the Chiefdom, with the Copperite Rugby League being the oldest sporting competition in the country dating back to 1937. Copper Cuprum had been long isolated from the international community since it is a small island archipelago located deep in the middle of the Lazarus Ocean, far from any regular shipping lanes since man first sailed ships. The nation was only discovered by the Fleftic Navy in 1914, when they were searching for the daughter of President Rufus Wole Mensah, whose ship was wrecked in the general vicinity of the islands. Arriving in the capital of the islands, they discovered that Chief Zed had made the President's daughter his queen, generating a sudden alliance between the two countries. And Copper Cuprum was also rich in copper, so that was a good thing for Abanhfleft too...

Name of nation:
The Chiefdom of Copper Cuprum
Demonym: Copperite
Kits: Initially, the Copperite national rugby sevens team was not supposed to wear any kits as ordinary people know them. Instead they would have played wearing only white loincloths and nothing else. However, in the interests of modesty and compliance with the international standard, the Copperite team has elected to wear a new uniform with alternating black and white hoops and black shorts.
Team colors: Black and white
Style modifier: +1.00 (A balanced team with a slight focus on offense)
Head coach: Count Varozke Sifoto (48 y/o, Copper Cuprum)
Notes: It is Copperite tradition to slit the throat of a live chicken before a game and then spread the spilled blood on the field. However, after the Valladar authorities advised the Copperite Football Federation against performing this tradition after local audiences were shocked by this tradition, it has been decided that in place of this tradition, Copperite players will now cut off the head of a rubber chicken before a game and then toss the head around like a hot potato. Originally the Copperites had brought back the tradition of killing chickens but after incidents in which spectators rushed the field to save the hapless chickens, it was decided that the rubber chickens will be used starting from the Rugby League World Cup. The Copperites hope to turn this tradition into their version of the haka.

The starting XIII are basically domestic league superstars, but not all positions are created equal. Abbadie is an exciting talent, but with very little experience, he's extremely explosive and athletic but does not always spot the best course of action. Canlas and Satomi are a beacon of reason and quality at centre to cover for that.

Fujioka is the clear star of the team, with his kicking and experience, but tendency not to get hit, he can set up his teammates like nobody else. He doesn't want to hold the ball for too long, though.

The forwards are somewhat young, but physically imposing. They could've been even younger, but at some point the selectors couldn't justify having a U-21 forward pack.

Rugby League World Cup XIX of Kayangan
The Malay Blood

In 2017 and 2018, Kayangan was hit by a series of anti-government protests across the country. To ease the anger of the people, President Dewa Artaruna Raja has launched an initiative known as the Happy People's Initiative. Among the objectives of the initiative is to entertain the people with sports. 2018, the Office of the Sports and Entertainment Commissioner (OSEC) has been created under the Office of the President. The Office of the Sports and Entertainment Commissioner has outlined three major sports that will be launched on a large scale - football, sepaktakraw and rugby. So officially the Liga Ragbi Kayangan is set up in 2019

In addition, the Office of the Sports and Entertainment Commissioner has also launched the Pertaruhan Artaruna Raja Corporation, a betting company where it encourages the people of Kayangan to bet on their favorite teams. Ohsem Health Ltd., largest condom manufacturer in Kayangan has been named the main sponsor of the Liga Ragbi Kayangan, and also Kayangan National Rugby Team.

Nation name: The Hannasean Federation
Team nickname: The Hannasean Hamsters
Team colors: Black and red with gold trim
Style modifier: +3

A 24-man squad has been named. In a reversal of the case in some other countries, in The Guild Federation rugby league is an amateur sport, and rugby union professional. Therefore, all of the players are amateurs, although some would probably be able to play at a professional level in other countries. With this the first Hannasean foray into the sport, an all under-25 squad has been named with an eye to gaining experience for the future. Expectations should be managed accordingly.

Logan Barling – Carpet, floor, and tile installer – Wing/Center

RP injuries to my players: Y, but please just say they’re injured and let me determine the severity. The Hamsters are physically fit and strong so don’t have them just wiped out by your players.
Godmod Injuries to my players: As above
Suspend my players: Y, but for convenience please don’t suspend Preston or Egan, or do something like have all my front-rows suspended. The Hamsters play pretty fair so don’t egregiously have them be dirty players.
Godmod suspension events: As above

General RP stuff: I will admit to not being a rugby league fan so may not do detailed match reports, so feel free to take the lead on that. Any reasonable combination of my players may start and players may sub out of position (within reason, don’t put a halfback at second-row!). I am open to any RP storylines within reason.

Rugby is the third most popular sport in Elejamie, just falling behind football (aka soccer; gridiron isn't really popular in Elejamie) and ice hockey. Although rugby union is the more popular of the two*, rugby league has a small yet loyal fanbase, especially those living inland. As such, the Elejamian Rugby Federation (ERF) has decided to send its best and its brightest from the Hinckley Bank Rugby League aka the HBRL (which replaced the old HBL, with the main change being that the tournament takes place in one year), which is the only rugby league league in Elejamie. Will they be able to bring a trophy home, especially since they were so close last time? Or will they fall short yet again? Let's find out...

* Rugby sevens isn't counted here because a) it's a variation of rugby union and b) the only rugby sevens tournament in Elejamie is the ERC Sevens,

Godmod injuries to my players: Y, see above.
Hand out yellow cards (sin bin) to my players: Y. A maximum of two per match (feel free to give it to two separate players or give them both to the same player, although that last one will count as a red card - see below).
Hand out red cards (sending off) to my players: Y. Again, one per match and a two game suspension maximum. Wait until the suspended guy comes back before red-carding me again please.
Godmod other events: It might be a good idea to TG me first

  • Remember it's AE at the beginning of Paete AEtomir's surname, as AE/ae is a letter in the Iyilim alphabet. Think of it as a bit like "ij" in Dutch. Æ is also acceptable (and it's what I used for the 15th RLWC roster). NEVER write "Ae", as that's incorrect.
  • All ages are taken from start of thread. Also, none of my characters have any birthdays coming up, so we don't have to RP any of that.
  • As always, if any of my players interest you, feel free to send me a TG saying which player you want, which club wants them and any other details (like wages, bonuses, etc.) you think you should mention.
  • "Starting interchanges" may seem like an oxymoron but, unless you choose someone else to take their place, they're basically the four players sitting on the bench for each match.

Placely Placington rugby league team something or other

Style Mod: +5
Colours: Black and white

Placely Placington are a somewhat familiar name to those who participate in the WorldVision Song Contest. From their chief scientist Dave the Hobo interrupting his entry midway to get a drink from a vending machine backstage to their grindcore singer sending two songs as one single entry to them sending a band who perform entirely in vowels, they've definitely seemed to have made their mark in the music world. However, with their WV83 entry not at the contest and the country still in need of money following that moment they all banned their economy, Chief President Man Dave McDaverson had an idea. He would send a squad of players to the then-upcoming Rugby League World Cup, win the tournament and use the money to pay off any debts. A simple plan, he thought as he smoked some more.

The downside? There were no rugby league players in Placely Placington. There were no rugby players in Placely Placington, full stop. There was A soccer player, who plays in all the positions for both of the country's teams, but he wouldn't have an idea of how to play this sport. So naturally they decided to go with Plan B. They cloned a whole bunch of Test Subjects, the grunts of the entire nation. The sorts who literally power the nation by pushing this big wheel with spokes that generates electricity. Sure they break down and die a lot, even by Placingtonian standards, but they can always clone some more. Sure they were rank outsiders to the point where they'll need three digit scoreboards to truly convey the score but they could always defy the odds. Regardless, this should be a fun tournament for all involved.

Team kit made by me in about ten minutes thanks to Google Image Search and Pixlr E. They are supposed to look that terrible.

Head Coach: Coach Man Blokey Thing Person Man Thing Man

14 Test Subject IM FB/W/C N/A
15 Test Subject IM C/SOH/HB N/A

To make things easier, feel free to use Test Subject (or merely just Subject) followed by either their number or position, much like what I've did with the Captain/Vice-captain thing. They may all be clones but they're still technically different people.

Choose my pointscorers: Y
Godmod scoring events: Y
RP injuries to my players: Y. Go nuts.
Godmod injuries to my players: Y. Deaths are not just allowed but also encouraged due to the nature of Placely Placington. Just as long as you don't make it too gory (just to avoid moderator intervention) you can kill off as many Test Subjects as you want however you want. Bonus points if you try and be as creative or as ludicrous (i.e. one of the Test Subjects having a bizarrely fatal allergy to air) as possible. Besides, the Clonomat's been brought over so they can easily bring back a new player as if nothing's happened.
Hand out yellow cards (sin bin) to my players: Y. No limits.
Hand out red cards (sending off) to my players: Y. Also no limits.
Godmod other events: Anything's allowed up to the dissolution of Placely Placington. Much like its denizens, Placely Placington can never truly die, it just dies for a little bit then comes back as if nothing's happened.

  • Because everyone in Placely Placington is an idiot, the Test Subjects themselves no exception, you're more than welcome to have any of the Test Subjects completely mess up the laws. Such as spiking the ball when they make it past the try line instead of putting it down for a try.
  • There is no IC link between Elejamie (my main) and Placely Placington, just to let everyone know.
  • This nation is a joke nation that was entered solely to bring this up to 32 nations, especially since I am set to move soon and time is of the essence.
  • In the event that I RP with this nation, I'd like all of my RP bonus to go directly towards my main nation (Elejamie) instead of this one. If this is not allowed, I'll delete this list point.

The Maudraiska Mirror

Number of Squirrels injured following Thundering Bears slide stampede

The Ancharmunn Squirrels could potentially start the upcoming Rugby League World Cup with up to three players out injured after their joint launch event with the Bostopia Stallions team, and the two team’s sponsors, Thundering Bears, descended into an evening of chaos.

With the Charmunnry and Bostopian sides both being sponsored by their local divisions of the Thundering Bears conglomerate the two teams came together at the Eilifint Bhán National Stadium in Ballyfeeaknock for their squad launch events, and to announce that the two nations would play-off for the Thundering Bears Trophy in a warm up match prior to the World Cup.

With the stage set within the members bar of the Eilifint Bhán National Stadium, the event was also expected to provide a platform for Thundering Bears, a company primarily focused on alcoholic drinks in Ancharmunn, to also launch their new range of Rugby League World Cup themed drinks. However a shipping error instead left the bar stocked with a supply of soft play products, the area the Bostopian arm of Thundering Bears primarily focuses on, and a giant slide onto the stadium pitch put in place instead.

Whilst confusion initially reigned attendees quickly took it upon themselves to instead let their inner child out, and enthusiastically try out the equipment, lead chiefly by special guest, Emperor Boston. Once coerced out of the ballpit, a rather sweaty though beaming Emperor enthused, “Cor, this is great fun! They should put soft play centres in stadiums more often. I’m going to race [Bostopia coach] Steve Mahonston down the slide again, if he beats me I’ll award him a personally signed rubber brick!! Wheeeeeeeeee!!”

Whilst the Emperor was one of those chiefly seen to have been enjoying the equipment a number of players and staff also joined in. Ancharmunn captain Daniel Steele and his Bostopian counterpart Danny Winters were seen to be engaging in a competition to see who could race up the rope web quickest. The hooking pair of Tjarco Verheggen and Grey Hintsworth meanwhile had to be reprimanded after being caught competing to see who could throw the most balls from the ballpit at their coaches heads.

Whilst the nature of the event was generally one of joviality there was a few concerns of the bigger boys playing a bit too roughly after a rush to get down the slide resulted in a number of players getting hurt, some perhaps so much so that they may miss a few matches at the World Cup.

Ancharmunn Squirrels coach Lorenzo O’Sullivan has already said that star man, and key kicker, Liam Brannigan will definitely miss out on the Thundering Bears Trophy clash and at least the opening match of the World Cup after suffering a sprained wrist after being caught up at the bottom of a mass pile up on the slide. Fullbacks Charlie Andrews and centre Lorcan Eugowra are also understood to be doubts for at least the Thundering Bears Trophy match, whilst the Bostopian team are understood to still be assessing whether any of their players suffered injuries.

“There was some speculation that the Emperor caused the pile up, by shoving through a big crowd to go down the slide first”, O’Sullivan later told reporters, “But I’m not sure exactly what happened. I’m not even sure if he’s noticed it’s happened yet, he still seems to be on a sugar rush from the raspberry slush puppies he’s been downing all night to be honest, and is running around happy as a hare in mating season at the moment, bless him.”

“I did speak to him earlier in the evening though, and he seemed genuinely excited about it all. Seeing Bostopia establish itself as a rugby league nation, the Thundering Bears Trophy, and in particular that swing things made out of a buoy, so I certainly don’t think he wouldn’t have set out to cause any injuries by using the Thundering Bears branded drinks tray as a makeshift toboggan on the slide”

“It’s a bit of a problem being without Liam, and possibly Charlie and Lorcan too, and I’m sure Steve Mahonston will be having similar worries about a couple of his players that got caught up in the pile up, but I don’t think anyones going to be injured too badly out of this. To be honest, I was more worried about all my players going on the lash on a bunch of this banoffee sundae flavoured rum we were expecting to be launched tonight. I just hope that hasn’t ended up somewhere inappropriate.”

Postby Kayangan » Sun Jul 26, 2020 6:02 pm

FORMER national player, Agung Pitra welcomes if the Rugby Association of Kayangan (RAK) can create a special fund to help former national players who face financial and health problems. He said he was one of the former players involved in the difficulty of getting a job, especially in finding a team after three years of not training with the last time he was the assistant coach of the Setanggi Storm team.

"I support and hope it can be done because this is one of the purest and best social services," he said when met at an action session to meet his fans here, today.

Harian Negara reported the views of former Langbuana Viper players, Kebal Induk who called on RAK and the Kayangan Professional Rugby Players Association to work together to create a special fund to help former national players. The mission is not impossible as corporate companies usually do not mind channeling funds for charitable purposes as they obtain tax relief from the Inland Revenue Board. According to him, realizing the budget constraints by the Athlete Welfare Foundation which has to bear many former athletes not only from rugby, it can at least give a second option for former players to get help.

"Apart from that, sports sector initiatives are also provided through the assistance of the Athlete Welfare Foundation, while for the private sector, the ministry is in talks with the Department of Treasurer on a proposed initiative that may be taken in the budget arrangements later," he said. Regarding the One-Stop Center for Athletes (OSCAR) which was developed a long time ago, the Office of Sports and Entertainment Commissioner said, it is still significant as a one-stop center for athletes to seek advice in various aspects.

‘Stallions?’ He said disdainfully, looking out upon the rugby pitch where a rugby league side were seemingly trying their best if nothing else. ‘What sort of a dickhead name is that? Look at the state of them. Donkeys would be a compliment.’

Pat looked across the field and couldn’t see anything he could use to argue his mate’s point with. ‘It wouldn’t have been so cutting a remark’ he thought, had his mate not been the Head Coach of the national side and the ‘them’ in question the national side itself. There were one or two standout players of course, a couple of bright sparks too, but the youngest of those was barely old enough to win a fight with a wet paper bag.

‘The other choice was “Thoroughbreds” apparently Steve’ Pat replied, trying to act as though Stallions was better.

‘Thoroughly-fucking-knackered more like. What sort of a muppet comes up with “Stallions”?’

A familiar, overly cheerful voice rang out from down the touchline ‘Hello! Only me!’ The ‘me’ in question was of course the Emperor, the muppet in chief himself.

‘Morning chaps’ the Emperor said, ignoring the fact it was two in the afternoon. The response received (a grunt at best) was rather gruff, the coaches more interested in the training session rather than the Head of State. ‘Erm… first match preparations not going well then?’

‘It’s two P.M. The game kicks off in an hour. You’re clearly hungover from Friday night – still. Some idiot pushed our hooker off the slide whilst trying to push their way to the front of the queue and now we’re having to play a 16-year-old boy there against a team of grown men’ Steve McMahonston replied, annoyed being the politest word that could be used to describe him.

‘The 16-year-old?’ The Emperor replied, seemingly now slightly more interested, though whether this was because he was intrigued by the use of dashes to join the words up, or in the player himself remained to be seen. ‘Yes, the 16-year-old. Better than we thought he would be.’ ‘Interesting…’ the Emperor said, tailing off into thought. Steve and Pat were glad for a bit of quiet and for the usually bouncy Emperor to be quite placid.

The three of them watched from the sideline as player after player attempted to score tries, only to find themselves being foiled by either sloppy play or a short run into the goalposts. It looked like the Bostopia side, in their first game, would probably find themselves having to go without more of their planned starters than would be ideal. Still, playing against Ancharmunn would be a solid test to see what the lay of the land was.

Who are Thundering Bears?

Thundering Bears are a Bosto-Charmunnry conglomerate who specialise in either alcohol or soft-play equipment depending on what country you are in. In Ancharmunn, they supply bars up and down the nation with the most popular drinks on the market, while in Bostopia they supply soft-play centres up and down the country with the equipment needed for children to have fun on and keep safe, whilst shipping out some, but not many, barrels of stout along with them to the soft-play areas that also have bars on-site. The facilities with bars are generally also owned by Thundering Bears, trading under the name ‘Little Bears’, giving them a guaranteed stream of income.

As Bostopia was already awash with breweries and spirits producers by the time trade links were established between the two countries, Thundering Bears did spot gaps in the market in that some of the larger cities in the country only had one or two soft play areas, which were located on the wrong side of town for a significant proportion of parents. Thundering Bears took this opportunity quickly, building new or buying existing warehouse units and converting them to high-quality, safe spaces for children to have fun in, whilst their parents could watch on from a café/bar area, stocked with Thundering Bears products.

Where is the athlete heading after retirement? If you want to continue your studies, you have to face the problem of qualification in addition to having to fight for a place, so the dream of at least holding a degree is just a dream.

In fact, worse, there are athletes who postpone their studies because they are not able to focus fully while continuing their studies at public universities. The scenario was detected by sports associations in the country when some athletes under their auspices expressed difficulty in continuing their studies due to the problem.

The matter was revealed by the President, Rugby Association of Kayangan, Anjungan Bijana who thought it was time for the sports industry in the country to move one step further by setting up a sports university to solve the problem as a whole. He said, the establishment of the university is not only able to further strengthen sports science in the country, but also 'repair' existing weaknesses, especially involving athletes who fail to further their studies at a higher level.

"For example, through the establishment of a sports university, of course, their class schedule will be according to the time appropriate for the athlete, which will be implemented online or at the appropriate time. Harian Negara reported that after the existence of plans to establish a sports school that produces various world-class athletes, it is time for Kayangan to take another step by creating a sports university.

The existence of such a university is expected to further develop the country's sports industry by not only producing world-class athletes, but coaches, instructors, entrepreneurs, physiotherapists and various other fields.

Article posted on the Long Boring Overwrought Set-up To Literally One Joke section of the SuperBusiness website.

RLWC Predictions: We Ask The Public

Rugby league remains an amateur, minority sport in the Federation, and with most eyes glued to the playoff race in the Hannasean Baseball League or getting ready to watch the field hockey and softball tournaments at the upcoming Summer Olympics, punditry for the Rugby League World Cup, in which the Hannasean national team will be competing for the first time, has been hard to come by. So we turned to the ‘man [and woman] on the street’, YOU, the public, to find out what you thought.

We asked one hundred Federation citizens who they thought would win the opening match of the tournament, between the Ancharmunn Squirrels and the Hannasean Hamsters. 94 of the respondents answered: “What are you talking about?” But we’ve collated the remaining six answers.

    Alicia Perrier, barmaid

“We’re very excited for the game. We’ll be showing it live in the bar and there promises to be a good crowd. People say rugby league isn’t popular in the Federation, but that’s because we don’t have a professional game – it doesn’t mean the passion isn’t there. Our bar is just down the street from the Federation Sports Center and lots of the lads come and have a drink after training. And some of them have a drink before training. And Jack Egan quite often pops in for a drink during training. But so long as he makes his field goals and keeps hitting his tackles hard, I don’t think the fact he hasn’t been able to pass a sobriety test since he was in kindergarten should count against him.”

    Max Lush, financial services

“Jolly good show, should be a ripping lark. Can’t see why they’ve gone and sent all those plebs, uh, those professionally challenged gentlemen. Me and Oli and Tarquin and Oliver and Charles and Ollie and Mungo and Olivier used to cut a pretty sight on the ol’ rugger field, what what, and would have put in a damn fine showing on the pitch and known how to tie a Windsor knot. Did you see those scruffs disembarking the plane? What a rotten lot of scoundrels they looked. Hmm, can’t see how our boys are going to be up to much snuff when it comes to actual business end of the wotsit, I’m afraid, old chap. And even if they were, would we really want the grubby oiks getting ideas above their station? Probably smear any silverware they won with their mucky fingerprints. Ghastly stuff, simply ghastly.”

    Bianca Paget, musician

“Being asked to sing the national anthem before the game is a huge privilege. We haven’t heard it being sung on the international stage since the women’s field hockey team won gold at the Summer Olympics all those years ago. Now, it may be becoming before a match that isn’t quite a clash of the titans, in a competition that may not be the absolute apex of sporting interest. But I don’t care: anytime I stand up to sing those proud words is a glorious moment and an opportunity to celebrate all that’s good about the Guild Federation, to advertise us to the world at large – and hopefully to fill 13 of our strongest young players with the motivation to go out there and get a great, historic win. Now, if only I could remember the damn words to the thing…”

    John Swayne, metal worker

“If there’s a game to target, it’s this first one. Ancharmunn’s key player injured, possibly absent, morale low after no doubt getting a bollocking; and it seems like they’re more interested in a rivalry with a team not even in their group. Yes, this is the one to go for. I think if the Hamsters come out early hitting hard, they could put down a strong statement that’ll help boost them when they meet the stronger teams later on. Cracking bunch of lads we’ve sent, just hope they can do us all proud.”

    Keira Cowlishaw, student

“I know we’re not the best team in the world but I just think it’s fun to see us getting back involved in international sports. Me and my mates loved watching the Olympics, the World Baseball Classic, the World Cup of Hockey, but it seems like the Federation teams don’t do those things any more. It’s really disappointing. I don’t know too much about rugby league but I’m going to watch every game, and keep watching so long as the Hannasean players are out there representing the Guilds! And I hope that even if they don’t do very well they keep sending teams and getting players out into the world. It’s the only way we’ll ever improve and have some teams to cheer about. Hockey and gymnastics are really cool but imagine if we had a baseball or ice hockey team worth supporting!”

    Bailey Maddox, furry porn artist

“What happens when the Hamsters take on the Squirrels? I think it’ll get very, very physical. Here, let me illustrate with this picture…”

Editorial note: The ‘We Ask The Public’ feature has been discontinued with immediate effect.

Ko-oren are definite contenders for the title, as the Dragonflies hope to win their second RLWC trophy. Having made just the one final, the goal is simple. Survive until then - but to honour the current generation of players, winning a trophy would be incredible. Some players have hinted at retiring from the national team after this World Cup, and a good result here will probably help their decision making. Canlas, centre, and Fujioka, halfback, are the ones that want to prioritise domestic play if they can, but despite rugby league being one of the five largest sports of the archipelago, there isn't a lot of depth at those positions - hence they were asked to suit up in green and blue one last time.

Players are from one of three regions: the east, Yoshima, with its Japanese-speaking population. They represent about half of all players. Then there is the southeast, Finisterre, with the romance-sounding names, who represent 15-20% of the players, and have some of the strongest club culture, particularly antagonistic towards Yoshima. The final 30% of players are from Cote Austral, who are on the sidelines in the Finisterre-Yoshima debate, but are a considerable force, with the richest clubs and a huge playerbase.

The most recent season ended with one club from each region in the playoffs: first a semifinal between the second and third ranked teams (Yoshiman Nitoya Foxes, Finisterran Ferrovente Scorpions), won by Nitoya by a single point off a Mori drop goal as the siren sounded. Mori has been on point all season, and his clutch thinking earned him a spot as the starting second rower for the Dragonflies. The Foxes then ran into the Aminey Buffaloes from Cote Austral, where they showed that true championship form comes from playing every single week, winning 32-18 at Aminey in the Grand Final. Fujioka scored eight points off three conversions and a penalty goal, with Mori adding six points from a try and a conversion.

Traditionally, the forwards are strongest from Cote Austral, the backs are from Yoshima, and whatever cement is needed to keep the team together is from Finisterre. Looking at the current roster, there's not much left of that: 50% of the forwards are from Cote Austral, only two backs are Yoshiman, and the spine is 0% Finisterran (instead, two out of three are from Yoshima).

The players to watch are Fujioka, flawless on kicks, backed up by Muramoto, who thinks on his feet making decisions who surprise foe (and friend). Abbadie is the fastest member of the team and often records a try. Rarely records two in a day, though. Canlas might be old, he's still powerful and accurate setting up tries. Up front, Matthieu and Mori are true stars of their clubs, both playing in the last Grand Final. On the bench, we can expect a lot from Brunet, Bran, and Levasseur - the latter still going at 33 years old, but will not think of retirement. Ever.
