[Abandoned] Well Done!

Postby Cretox State » Mon Jul 06, 2020 1:26 pm

If wishing wells have been done before, please let me know. Any feedback is much appreciated.

Well Done!

Validity: All.

Description
Newspapers across the nation are abuzz today after a rescue team recovered a celebrity’s son from the bottom of a wishing well... along with a bounty totaling millions of @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@.

Option 1
“What a score!” exclaims @@RANDOMNAME@@, your Finance Minister. “Virtually every town in @@NAME@@ has one of these wells; who knows how much loot is sitting right beneath our feet? We need to excavate every wishing well we can get our hands on! It’ll be a great boost to my piggy ban- our treasury!”

Effect: children’s scavenger hunts are promptly shut down by men in dark suits

Option 2a
Validity: Must have market economy

“Have I got a deal for you!” says @@RANDOMNAME@@, a used car salesman turned personal injury lawyer and corporate lobbyist. “What’s the difference between a wishing well and a casino? Surprisingly little! Officially sponsor privately-run wishing wells, and we’ll turn coin-tossing into fun events for the whole family, complete with extravagant bids and amazing prizes! We’ll make sure the government gets its cut, of course.”

Effect: citizens compete to see who can throw the most money down a hole

Option 2b
Validity: Must have state-planned economy

“Why stop there?” asks an advisor who’s enjoying this way too much. “What’s the difference between a wishing well and a casino? Surprisingly little! Set up official state-run wishing wells, and we’ll turn coin-tossing into fun events for the whole family, complete with extravagant bids and amazing prizes! More money for our coffers, and some entertainment for the proletariat. I call that a win-win.”

Effect: citizens compete to see who can throw the most money down a hole

Option 3
“Can’t you see past your own greed?!” shrieks @@RANDOMNAME@@, whose son spent two days at the bottom of a well before being rescued. “These so-called ‘wishing wells’ are a menace to society and a danger to our children. Outlaw the construction of any new wishing wells, and fill the existing ones up with concrete. Your people will thank you.”

Effect: ball pits beyond a certain depth are considered a public safety hazard

Option 4
“What’s all the hubbub about?” questions @@RANDOMMALENAME@@, an elderly gentleman. “Sure, someone’s kid got trapped for a bit. So what? Those wells are a part of local culture throughout our great nation. If anything, you should be supporting local culture, instead of trying to control it. What’s a few @@CURRENCYPLURAL@@, anyways?”

Effect: children’s chalk drawings are considered sacred cultural sites

And to think I thought this was an issue about overcooked meats. Instead it's about wells.

Well done. :)

Not entirely sure about option 4, since it seems sorta... meh. I feel like there could be an option about pouring concrete into wells so people can't access their jackpot.

Another... really weird possible option that could work is a reversal to the no cents policy. Hear me out:
This issue would hypothetically be valid to all nations. If you go into wishing wells and discover there could be a profit, but most of the coins are worthless pennies,
then it could be an incentive to make pennies officially part of the currency again.

Just some ideas. Overall I think it's a cute premise. I haven't the foggiest what is done about wells irl but if this is an actual issue, this could be a fun one. :)
Still, definitely remove present option 4. If you'd rather have more options, definitely consider the others I brought up. :P

Here is a list containing a bunch of factbooks I created that are Got Issues? related.

^ I know this is hardly a flashy signature, but at least I have one now.

I think almost all wishing wells are regularly emptied of coins by whoever owns them. Even if they weren't, coins in the well would still clearly be the property of the well's owners.

For this to be an issue there'd need to be large numbers of unowned wishing wells that people regularly throw coins into. The only circumstance that really makes sense is if the well is a natural formation, and then there's environmental concerns that are more important than who owns the coins.

So basically, not sure the issue works.
editors like linguistic ambiguity more than most people
