Selling cards to yourself

Postby Olofin » Fri Jul 03, 2020 6:29 am

Recently, I saw an example of a player matching their own bid in the card market. Does this mean that it’s possible to make money from a trade with yourself?

I don't see how you can make money on it if you mean buying and selling a card from your main to your main as no bank is subtracted/added. The reason that people might do this would be to inflate MV on a card, but I'm not sure if MV factors in transactions by a main to itself.

If you mean however selling a card by a main to a puppet, this is a neat way to transfer bank from one nation to another. You "make money" not from the card, but simply from transferring money made from junking cards by your puppet.

People self match typically for 4 reasons:

1. (Perhaps the most common these days) TCALS triggers on self matches, so we run pull events with self matches so that we don't have to transfer the bank back to our mains. That's probably what you saw earlier as TNL/myself was running a couple of pull events.

2. Saving MV after accidentally placing a bad ask. For example, one time I asked 33.2 on Mindless Contempt rather than 332, so I self matched and nobody interfered since self trades don't count for MV and nobody wanted to get dropped.

3. Making up for mistakes after a failed drop/getting dropped.

4. Piggybacking. This can simply be a transfer or an inflation attempt, where an additional match will be added at the last minute that will actually transfer bank/count for MV.

EDIT: An uncommon and not particularly effective reason for self matching is to sell cards too, often you'll see someone match with themselves in hopes that someone outbids them.
