YN's tourist thoughts on AN: Revival

Postby Silver Commonwealth » Mon Jun 15, 2020 7:07 am

(For reference:
YN = Your nation
AN = Nation above you in forum post)

This thread in previous iteration was around for quite a long time, actually, but got auto-pruned some time ago. So, this is a reboot, I guess.

Anyways, the premise is pretty simple: Write an opinion of a tourist from YN in AN. It can be about its people, buildings, food, or just general things. It is highly encouraged to have factbooks before posting, so other users would have something to write about (Basing everything on NS stats is not fun, right?).

No nation above me.

"I... this place. It's fucking sad, in all honesty. It's just so, so depressing. The general atmosphere I got, at least in my experience, was one of sadness, where thinking for yourself was frowned upon and punishable. I can not imagine someone legitimately liking this place. Everyone may look like they like this place, but in reality, they just fake it so they don't get persecuted."

(As I have a separate overview of SC's Patagonia, I thought that using Patagonian characters would fit the most.)

''One of the first things we noticed when we arrived at Neuquén airport was the fact that it was the capital, and not Río Gallegos - sure, it is the largest city, but it is too close to the border with those La Platans. Alright, we will keep the cities for the last - we went first to the Mapuche and Gauchos in the countryside. We were surprised about the Gaucho cultural revival, and that Mapuches were apparently raiding the Chileans again. However, perhaps the most bizarre thing is, that those Gauchos got actual metal horses to do their thing - I wonder, what they do with biological ones. We also got to witness how some of militias shipped La Platan (Argentinian) prisoners of war to work in Ancap Chile - hell, the word itself makes us want to throw up, and their leader got shot like a dog after the failed coup attempt in our timeline. Enough about Chile, let's get back to Patagonia - we met some of old people which were grilling meat, and we were shocked when they told us that they were required to kill themselves to ''make way for new blood''. Although on a second thought it makes sense that those futurists would think out something like that. One of us tried some of the futurist ''foods'' in a caffee, and while ''Milk in a Green light'' actually tasted quite nicely, some others had either wacky names, weren't appetizing, or were just plain disgusting. At least they hadn't ruined the good old curanto yet. That said, at least the whole nightlife and street cafe atmosphere were sightseeing-worth objects. Some of their ways of life could be described as... degenerate, but we are afraid they would take it as a compliment instead. Also, music in their radios was very different if compared to songs like Que viva Fidel in Caribbean Union's radios - almost as same in spirit as their art movement. On our way back, we managed to meet a few so called ''hippies'' from America, and to say that our views on culture clashed would be an understandment. We could have dug deeper in this Patagonia, but we are afraid that we would get nightmares from this insanity, where dream catcher wouldn't help. Overall, this Patagonia seems to be built on immigrants as well, but remains just as sparsely populated - SC's Patagonia has over a million population, and yet it still feels so goddamn sparse. Their territory is also somewhat smaller, however, as it is not like that Chile would gift them their part of Patagonia anytime soon. Now, we know a few things about futurism from obligatory political literature back in school, but scariest thing is that those futurist freaks are getting somewhat popular in SC's Italy, the birthplace of that movement. Let's hope, that the Holy Social Republic contains them if their goal is Patagonia 2.0.''

The Vincosian people have more drive, are more self-reliant, and hold greater convictions than the Coryans, which confirms my suspicion that Vincosia is ideologically superior, but... their technology. It more than makes up for that! Coryanahafflaruda is like a paradise to almost a cloying degree and we could NEVER stand against their might. ''Hey, we are back with the series ''Patagonians travel across the world''! This time we visited North Styx. Let's just say, that they didn't let us in through Purgatory for some reason, so we had to travel over the river of Styx, which was the chance for some of our mythology nerds to shine with their knowledge. We had to pay Charon a bit to carry us across the river of Styx - usually he carried deceased souls, but we guess that this time it was an exception for him. Our first impressions? Let's just say, that while its metropolitan status means that it is quite urbanized, we also got to meet quite a few unique species which we either wrote down in our notebooks, or took photos with. Most of them were something we never had heard or seen before, but some like Wendigos we did recognize, and one of us was excited to see one of their dead ancestor souls which had ended up there somehow. We heard, that deep down there was also Tartarus - inhospitable caves, where only the most evil souls ended up, but we didn't get to see them. We also found out, that occasionally some undead nazis rise up to try to take over - while it was supposed to scare us, all we could feel was... cringe. As their ideology has been discredited beyond recovery in our world, they are also seen as cliche. Our advice for other SC's tourists? Better stay in the Northern Styx if you even end up there, and go where the guides tell you - exploring on your own hand could end up badly very quickly.''

''Surprisingly, we knew something about posadism before from the private lectures about ''obscure ideologues'' by our professors during some stormy Patagonian nights in a Río Gallegos flat - a testament to how absurdly efficient and paying attention to details SC can be. Honestly, at first we were surprised how they were able to establish a city state in Antarctica with about 8.5 million people, considering that SC's colonization attempts so far only have a couple of thousand colonists, and most of them are in former Antarctic stations, and those settlements would barely classify as villages on the mainland. When we checked their history museum, we came to a conclusion that their founders indeed were eccentric, which also mirrored in the nation itself - think about it, they have achieved autarky, and most of their population could very well survive both nuclear war and apocalypse, so they are a force to not mess with. After all, those crazies believe that nuclear strikes are the way to dismantle capitalism, and achieve true equality, although the ''dissolving capitalism'' part doesn't sound that bad. From the city itself, we got to see their greenhouses, along with the land which was reclaimed from the cold Antarctican desert - it was clear that they worked hard on improving biodiversity. We didn't have enough time to explore inner city, so we mostly spent the rest of day by looking at the outer city. They had tall, brutalist buildings, just like SC's USA, but they seem to have been built as such mostly due of practical, rather than aesthetic reasons, and I can't blame them, as Antarctica is still a horrible place to live in. We also noticed that they liked to keep penguins as pets, and had even domesticated them - our guide explained that it was because ''they saw a bit of themselves in them''. Well, let's just say that penguin sh*t stinks pretty badly, so gl when it comes to that aspect. That said, they having alien technologies and aliens not establishing contact with the rest of the humanity is quite uncanny, especially considering that they would want others to accept the decadent values of this nation in order to do make a contact. Their blissymbols were said to be made in order to be ''easily interpreted despite language barriers'', yet we still sometimes were puzzled of what those were trying to tell us. As a final note, while their technological progress is commendable, their social progress isn't - secularism and acceptance of certain non-ethnic minorities is a bane.''

"Our accommodation was a run-down bland concrete hotel that looks like a Soviet apartment. The housekeeper kept boasting how the commode has advanced amenities, I'm sure that he couldn't notice the irony of having a "commode" with advanced amenities. When we arrived, the bed was white and the sheets were not even replaced with stains on it. The shower heater has a high-tech cyberpunk looking display on it, but I had to punch it to make it work!

When we went to a canteen, there was a vending machine that sells Farmer's Joe Potato Chips and Nuka-Cola. The Farmer's Joe Potato Chips simply tastes like your average chips, but the Nuka-Cola tastes like a Coca-Cola that lost its carbon and fizz, bad! The meals served at the community canteen also tastes bad, even when they are served by a robot from a retro-punk vending machine.

Also, we feel that we were watched anytime, as the telescreens could not even be turned off. A memorable experience was when there was a Droid-looking robot that apparently has "advanced AI", but couldn't even see us and kept bumping into me even when I was 1 meter away!

Bland food, rude customer service, pervert and rude housekeeper who glares at me, dumb robots, 3/10, would not visit again!"
