Question about Irish mythology

Postby Blue Embassy » Sat Jun 06, 2020 3:28 am

Hello,

Please help me understand.

I'm trying to understand one thing about Irish mythology - maybe someone who knows Irish language could know this.

Why the chief deity is called The Dagda? Why not just Dagda?

Like instead of calling someone "Adam" you would call them "The Adam"?

Thank you in advance!

From what I understand, it is because 'Dagda' is closer to a title than a name.

So more like "God" in Christianity?

The logic being that this is the name of the.. "function" for lack of the better word, not an actual given name?

Oii,
While I'm lightyears away from even the remotest approximation of an expert on Irish mythology, I assume, that it's most because An Dagda translates as 'the good god' or 'the great god' (an is a definite article, like 'the' in English), which would explain why the other names the Dagda goes by, like 'Dáire' or 'Áed', which are actual given names, do not use it, and neither do the other deities I can think of.
It might also be to stress his meaning as a main deity, similar like most other pagan pantheons tend to have some main deity, think of Odin.
I hope, this helps a bit ... ^^

Greetings,
Lillo

Since Lillorainen's geography is currently being overhauled a 'tiny' bit, most information on it posted before December 12, 2018, is not entirely reliable anymore. Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

Because its a Title rather than a name, thus An Dagda - The Good/Splendid God. from proto-indo European Dago-deiwos (Good god). His association with Splendour probabaly marks him as a Solar diety and his actual name was maybe Daire

Similarly The Morrigan from Moro-rīganī (Terror Queen)

So you don't confuse it with a guitar tuning.

Dagda means ''Good God'', so that's why it is typically listed as An Dagda or ''The Good God'' - Now why they say 'The Dagda' is just because English is bad with names. Hence Sahara Desert lit. 'Desert Desert'.
