3 DEAD IN SHOOTOUT AT ARREST OF KENTUCKY CLERK

MOREHEAD, KY - The ongoing saga of Carla Dawson, the clerk in Rowan County, Kentucky who became nationally known for refusing to process the paperwork for refugees resettled in Rowan County under a federal program, took a deadly turn yesterday when right-wing terrorists ambushed local and state police officers who were serving a warrant for Ms. Dawson’s arrest for contempt of court. Now multiple police officers and suspects are dead or in the hospital and the nation is reeling from the shocking outburst of violence.

Carla Dawson was indicted by a district court three days ago for contempt of court, when she defied a court order to process paperwork filed by newly arrived residents of Rowan County to register for various social welfare programs. Ms. Dawson claimed that she did not personally agree with the federal and state governments’ decision to admit the refugees or resettle them in Rowan County. Dawson then refused to appear before the district court, leading to the decision to hold her in contempt. When local police and state troopers arrived at Ms. Dawson’s house to serve the warrant, they were fired on by several men armed with military-caliber semi-automatic rifles. One police officer was killed and three others were wounded. One attacker was killed by officers returning fire. The county SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) unit arrived on the scene an hour after the shooting began and stormed the house, killing one other gunman and wounding two others. Two gunmen were arrested unharmed, as was Ms. Dawson.

The Oath Keepers, a right-wing militia associated with the conservative Patriot movement, claimed responsibility for the ambush in a video released online. It defended its actions by claiming that its members were doing their “Constitutional duty” to defend Ms. Dawson’s right to refuse to perform duties which she considered to be against the best interests of the United States of Astoria.

Ms. Dawson’s case became a nationally-covered event, and a rallying point for conservatives and right-wing activists who claim that the federal government is trampling on the rights of states and localities. The program remains wholly voluntary and overwhelmingly popular. Ms. Dawson and other opponents of the program have cited national security as a chief concern, but no refugee has been indicted or convicted of terrorism or other crimes of a national security nature. The data shows that refugees are no more likely to commit any sort of criminal behavior than citizens born in Astoria.

President David Jefferson Adams spoke with Kentucky Governor Malcom Ridgeway over the phone hours after the gun battle ended, and he has also spoken with President of Chrinthania Jose Alvarez, who expressed his condolences to the family of the officer who was killed and to those officers who were injured. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released a statement that it is coordinating with all relevant national, state, and local authorities to bring the leaders of the Oath Keepers to justice.

Prominent terrorist group NLF has conducted a raid against a border checkpoint in the state of Udrain!

At 07:05 Nacrad Standard Time today, Instow Border Checkpoint near Instow City was raided by 75 NLF members. The battle ended at 13:00 Nacrad Standard Time, with a Nacradian victory. As of writing, 15 Nacradian Border Patrol personnel have been killed, with a further 20 injured, while 33 attackers were killed and 42 captured.

The Internal Security Board has vowed to eradicate this terroristic group, and will look into the security of that region.

NLF has in turn admitted to this attack, and vowed to "rain fire upon Nacrad" unless liberation is given.

A statement on behalf of the Senate and People of Rome

Rome has been greatly disturbed by the announcements out of the Kingdom of Big Carencia regarding the piratical scourge that has plagued the East African coastline for decades. Rather than cracking down on such a barbaric and outdated practice, the King of Big Carencia has, foolishly, decided upon a path of state-sponsored piracy that is not befitting a modern-state, and has all the characteristics of a failed state unable to control its criminal elements. It is the long-standing position of Rome, and settled international convention, that all civilian vessels have the right of innocent passage; to pass through the territorial, contiguous, and exclusive economic zone of another without fear of molestation or attack. There is no circumstance in which this right should be infringed, save for the enforcement of applicable law within the territorial waters of another, however this would be carried out by properly authorised law enforcement personnel, not a civilian militia acting as pirates.

Let me, in the name of the Senate and People of Rome, make the position of the Republic clear; any act of state-sponsored piracy against a vessel flying the flag of Rome will be considered an act of war against the Republic, deserving a full retaliatory response. Any act of state-sponsored piracy against a vessel flying the flag of any sovereign nation will be considered a crime against international peace, and full support will be offered to the injured party by Rome.

In order to protect Roman trade against unprovoked attacks, and to provide a reassuring presence for other international partners, the Senate and People of Rome have authorised me to make public a decision to deploy significant naval assets to the Mare Indicus (Indian Ocean) with the expressed purpose of suppressing piracy off the East African Coast. A Decree of the Senate and People of Rome regarding Roman Citizenship and Roman Sovereignty.

The highest priority of the Roman State is the protection of its citizens, both at home and aboard; this decree, proposed by the Consusl Gaius Decimus Meridius & Quintus Septimus Avitus to the Roman Senate, and enacted at their command by the Comitia Civis, shall be the Supreme Roman Law when matters of Citizenship and Sovereignty are to be considered. Violation of this decree by any Roman is under pain of death or exile, and by any foreigner, individually or collectively, under pain of whatever retribution the Senate and People of Rome deem appropriate, up to and including military action.

Section I: On Citizenship

• A Roman Citizen is defined as any individual who is a Roman Citizen by birth, or an individual who is in possession of grant of citizenship.

Section II: On Sovereignty

A further twelve nautical miles is claimed as a contiguous zone and a further two hundred nautical miles is claimed as an exclusive economic zone.

Any individual, party or state violating the territorial integrity of Rome under arms will face immediate and severe repercussions.
  
• No Roman-flagged vessel or aircraft shall be impeded or molested whilst conducting its lawful business in international waters or airspace; any such acts of piracy, terrorism or hostility shall be dealt with severely as a breach of this decree.
  
  
  • Any Roman-flagged vessel or aircraft may defend itself against unlawful or hostile action.

High Chancellor Opens Panama Canal

Today is a great day for both Oceanor and the world. Earlier this day High Chancellor Audric Charpentier announced that the long-planned and even longer awaited Panama Canal is now open to the word for commercial use. Both over budget and long past the planned opening date, the people of Oceanor are overjoyed nonetheless. Over a million showed up to the opening ceremony, which was also attended by hundreds of well-known celebrities and politicians from around the globe.

Access to the canal will be free and open to all Oceanorian ships,

and it's close allies. At this time the only confirmed "close ally" is Chrinthania, which will have open and free access to the canal for all of its ships as soon as the Canal begins operation. However, military ships are not permitted from any nation other than Oceanor, and any military vehicles attempting to enter the canal will be turned back. Further ways of acquiring permissions to the Canal will be decided in the future, but for now, the current permissions are as stands.

The canal runs through the shortest route between the Atlantic and the Pacific, with a set of locks on either side. A lake has been created in the center of Panama Confederate, with the permission of the Chancellor of Panama. It is estimated that the canal can take over 20,000 vessels per year, although estimated vessels are 14,000 per year. The canal will be a huge convenience for thousands of ships who will now be able to skip the 12,713 km trip around South America.

This amazing feat of engineering just goes to show that Oceanor is more unified than ever and that many of the conflicts that have plagued it for years can be put aside when greatness calls.

President Adams Should Show More Sympathy for the Plight of Conservatives

Once upon a time, political debate in Astoria was open to everyone. Our greatest Presidents - John Burke, Alexander Logan, Daniel Jessup, Emmauel Dewey - all built their greatness on a foundation of bipartisan compromise. They understood that the United States was at its best when it listened to both the left and the right. Unfortunately, President David Jefferson Adams, unfortunately, has followed in a less honorable and more recent tradition, forged by Presidents like Lee Sarason and Jeremiah Hull. This tradition sees tragedies like the shootout in Morehead, Kentucky not as a sign that the country is fatally divided and in need of healing, but as a new wedge to further elevate their political agendas at the expense of those who disagree with them.

President Adams’s comments at the Memorial Day ceremony were unnecessary and made a partisan farce of a solemn national moment. He has refused to walk back his remarks even after an outpouring of outrage from Democratic Party politicians and other conservative activists. Now Adams’s political allies and followers are joining in with salvos of their own, making unsubstantiated and harmful pronouncements blaming the Democratic Party for inciting the violence. The Oath Keepers are an unregulated militia, and a public menace. They should be brought to justice for their deeds. But to try and beat Astorian conservatism with their body of work is to merely inflame future extremists into following their lead. It also continues to alienate ordinary Astorians who see themselves virtually disenfranchised, with two flavors of Liberalism to choose from in January.

If President Adams is serious about his pledge during the campaign to serve as a uniting force, he should start listening more earnestly to the complaints of voters who reliably send Democratic politicians to the House and Senate every election. He should start following in the footsteps of his self-proclaimed role model, President John Burke, and incorporate good ideas even if they come from outside his political circle. Continuing to plow forward with policies like refugee resettlement, dismissing those who have legitimate economic and national security objections as “racists” (a word which seems to have been broadened to include any disagreement with the Progressive Party line) or ignorant xenophobes does nothing to solve Astoria’s most pressing issue of the 21st century: the gap between those who are heard and those who are silenced.

Daniel Beeks Should Listen to What His Conservative Friends are Actually Saying

Daniel Beeks has a very easy job. No matter what issue he is asked to write a column on, he merely has to repeat the same points: 1) In the Mythical Past, there was no partisanship; 2) despite everyone in this Mythical Past always agreeing to compromise and meet in the middle, the good solutions always ended up being conservative ones because the Silly Liberals always realized the folly of their dreaming; 3) this Mythical Past ended when the 21st century began (totally unrelated to the election of Lee Sarason, Astoria’s first gay President) and the Silly Liberals began shoving their pipe dreams down the throats of “ordinary Americans.” Beeks then gets to copy and paste the same end paragraph onto every column, where he calls for the current Liberal or Progressive President to “compromise” with conservatives by totally conceding to all of their demands. This, Beeks promises, will finally win over those Democratic Party voters who have stood by their party throughout the racism, homophobia, and xenophobia of the past two decades.

Curious that Mr. Beeks never seems to use his column, which he certainly believes is influential and widely-read, to try and convince those Democratic Party voters, politicians, and donors to maybe try and clean up their own Party before they start making demands of others. I say curious, but it isn’t really; because Mr. Beeks isn’t in the business of offering sound and rational political advice. If he was, he would have published a column somewhere around the fourth week of the 1999-2000 presidential election campaign, urging all of his readers to take a hard look at the party embracing bigotry of all shades in a desperate attempt to block President Sarason from winning in January and then do the rational, politically astute thing and disown the whole apparatus.

But Daniel Beeks isn’t writing a political advice column. He’s writing a sop piece for conservatives who can use it as another club to bash whatever Liberal or Progressive is in office. He’s writing for TV pundits who can invite him on their shows to ask him “why doesn’t President Adams just listen" to the goons ranting about foreign devils coming to siphon off the precious bodily fluids of good, “ordinary” Astorians. President Adams cannot “bridge the gap” between the vast majority of this country and its angry conservative minority because every single bridge that has been built has been built from one direction, from left to right, and as soon as it gets close enough for conservatives to reach they’ve hurled fire at it until the cinders were floating away in the breeze along with the Democratic Party’s electoral prospects. The Democratic machine doesn’t want to engage in dialogue that crosses partisan lines, they want to make tons of money peddling blind, frothing partisanship (and plenty of other grifts) to their base.

Here is how President Adams can really be a “Uniter-in-Chief”: he can keep saying what he said on Memorial Day. He can speak the truth, openly and unashamedly, about the ugly things that motivate conservative political action in Astoria in 2020. That will unite all the Astorians who really care about this country as something more than a cash cow.

High Chancellor Audric Charpentier of Oceanor has just announced the founding of a new international body: The Global Trade Organization. This news comes in unison with the opening of the Panama Canal, a new body of water that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The GTO will be a global organization to promote trade amongst its members. Oceanor will be the first member of this organization, and because of its status as both the founder of the organization and as a major trade hub, it will be at the head of the GTO. It has been confirmed that membership in the GTO entails access to the Panama Canal.

The High Chancellor had this to say when asked about his plans for the role of the organization: "It will be an organization to promote both free and fair trade. Free trade is in the interest of all nations, as it creates the possibility for global prosperity and pulls nations closer together. One major goal of this organization is to bring nations closer together, which in turn will bring a more peaceful, connected world and create the environment for international cooperation. Fairtrade is an even more important tenet to the GTO. Ensuring that all people receive fair pay and adequate work conditions should be a priority in the modern world, yet still millions do not have either of those. The GTO will strive to ensure that those necessities are provided to workers across the globe, and any nation that does not adhere to fair trade will be embargoed by the GTO".

Application for membership in the GTO will begin immediately, and almost all nations are welcome. That being said, the High Chancellor has confirmed that Big Carencia will be barred from the organization due to its piratical tendencies. "Big Carencia not only does not meet the expectation of fair trade but is inherently a threat to the GTO. No nation that sponsors piracy can truly be a trading nation. The GTO and all of its members will be dedicated to ridding the seas of pirates, and ensuring the safety of all trading vessels" said the High Chancellor in the interview. Membership is expected to grow rapidly. Between the GTO and the Panama Canal, the outlook for Global Trade and international cooperation looks brighter than ever.

THE UFG JOINS THE GTO

A historic vote recently took place today, with a unanimous vote to join the GTO. A massive wave of contention sweeped the nation today, as pundits fought over the meaning of this. The GTO is a recently established trade organization, which will allow access to the Panama canal, and mandates 0% tariffs on trade goods. The organization also has a anti-piracy force, with UFGNSC, and UFGN sending over CSG 1, with the new Bismarck-Class nuclear carrier. A media spokesman of the UFGC has cited the many benefits from joining the GTO as the catalyst to join, and has also said that he has high hopes for the organization.

NEW MILITARY ALLIANCE ESTABLISHED

The President has recently announced that a new alliance was established today, with the name of the Pan-Pacific Defense League. Member states have to have a clean human rights record, and need to have representation of all peoples. Oceanor has been extended an invatation, but the treaty is currently under drafting.

NEW BISMARCK CLASS CARRIER BUILT

A new Bismarck Class carrier was christened today. Named UFGS Joan of Arc, The UFG Navy says that the second Bismarck Class is a massive step to gaining power projection. CSG 2 Quick Action was established today, with rumors saying that the new Diderot-Class Destroyers will be assigned to CSG 2. The new Diderot Classes have many advancements, such as Laser AA systems, and stealth. The UFG navy is slated to replace the old Burke-Classes, which were obtianed from a shady company a long time ago. The new Bismarck Classes have cap. for 100 jets, and new CIWS systems, which make this carrier a great addition to the fleet.

A Statement on behalf of the Senate and People of Rome

Rome is a strong believer in the Law of the Sea, and the right of innocent passage through territorial waters. As a result, the Senate and People of Rome are greatly disappointed with the decision of the Confederacy of Oceanor to restrict passage through the Panama Canal, both civilian and military. Although the Republic acknowledges ownership and sovereignty over the Panama Canal belongs to the Confederacy, and that the Confederacy has the right to levy fees and charges for passage, refusing passage rights to such a critical waterway is improper. Rome has maintained a long history of allowing passage of civilian and military vessels through the Suez Canal, without restriction and without conditions save for transit fees, including to shipping from the Confederacy; a magnanimity which is repaid with a cynical decision to betray that example.

As a result, the Senate and People of Rome has made the decision to enforce its sovereignty over the Suez Canal and to restrict passage of all civilian and military vessels registered in the Confederacy of Oceanor, with immediate effect. Moreover, all members of the grandly titled Global Trade Organization, by associating with the Confederacy of Oceanor, will also be denied passage through the Suez Canal until further notice.

High Chancellor Gawks at International Backlash, Attempting to Regain His Step

Just after the creation of the GTO, many in the international community have denounced Oceanor's sudden creation of an international body, and seemingly hypocritical granting of permissions to the newly built Panama Canal. This newspaper managed to gain a short interview with High Chancellor Audric Charpentier this morning, and this is what he had to say: "About the "Close Allies", Chrinthania does not have to join the GTO in order to gain access to the Canal due to it's status as a long time friend and allie to Oceanor. About the GTO, it was a little rash of me to institute an international body without first discussing it on the world stage, but I meant no harm or hostility. I will be temporarily shutting down the GTO, and I will not re-found it until the rest of the world has a chance to discuss it. There will be an International Trade Conference on June 4, 2020, where the leaders of the world can come together to discuss the nature of the new organization. United France Germany's membership in the GTO will remain, and they will still be considered a member if the GTO is re-founded. I must go now."

With that the High Chancellor rushed off. He left us with some important questions. What will the world decide at the conference? What will the High Chancellor's next moves be? What does this backlash mean for Oceanor and the world? What does all this mean for the Panama Canal? Why has your talented correspondent not gotten a raise in over a decade? Let us hope that all these questions will be answered by the conference. Until then, we can do nothing but wait.

International Trade Conference Begins in Panama City, Oceanor

Leaders from across the globe have gathered in Panama city today to discuss the future of international trade and the new international body, the GTO. This conference was created after international backlash to the High Chancellor's sudden creation of an international body. It is expected that the fate of the organization, namely the Global Trade Organization, will be decided at this conference.

The conference has no end date, but instead will end once all of the three issues at the conference have been either resolved or put to another date. One of the biggest issues that will be discussed is Piracy. The international community has been trying to deal with the state sponsored Piracy of Big Carencia for centuries, and they will come together at the conference to figure out what steps they will take to end it, if any. It must be noted that Big Carencia itself has sent representatives to the conference.

What will happen at the conference, and what will be the fate of the GTO? As the conference is televised live to the world, all we can do is wait and watch. But one thing is for certain: change is coming, and it's coming now.

Super Typhoon Catherine is now centered near 21°11'39.4"N 122°21'24.2"E, or about 300 km (186 mi) southeast of Guthan. Its 10-minute average wind speed near the center is 240 km/h (149 mph) and the maximum gust is expected to reach 380 km/h (235 mph). Super Typhoon Catherine is expected to move at its current heading at 15 km/h (10 mph) and may strengthen slightly.

According to the computer simulations by the South East Asian Meteorological Survey Center (SEAMS), Super Typhoon Catherine may experience yet another spurt of strengthening, and will enter the South China Sea without making landfall in either Guthil or Luzon, thus retaining its strength. On the contrary, the Philippine counterpart PAGASA forecasted Super Typhoon Katherine to make landfall in Guthil and thus losing much of its strength before reaching the Pearl River Delta region as a Stage 1 Super Typhoon or a Severe Typhoon.

Owing to the subsidence warming effect of the typhoon, most of Nacrad experienced intense heat, smashing June records. The highest temperatures were recorded at Portsville, Instow and Riverfort, which reached 41 C (105 F), 43.5 C (111 F) and 42.7 C (108 F) respectively, as the Very Hot Weather Warning Tier 3, the maximum level, was issued on much of the nation since 2 June.

At 21:00 today (4 June 2020), the Storm Signal, No. 8, is in force in Kalinko Province to the east of Guthil, while the Gale Signal, No. 7, is in force in Guthan Province and Taichung Province, on the south and west of Guthil respectively, whereas the Strengthening Wind Signal, No. 5, is now in force in Toipak Province, in the north of Guthil. Cape Kenting, the southernmost point of Guthil, is currently recording hurricane-force winds.

The Nacradian Astronomy, Climate and Atmospheric Observatory has stated that it will consider issueing the No. 10 Hurricane Signal on the southern portion of Guthil soon. It has also stated that the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 may be issued as early as tomorrow morning to the coastal provinces on the mainland, unless Super Typhoon Catherine weakens or slows down significantly. It is predicted that the typhoon will make landfall during the late night of 7 June or early morning on the 8th.

SEAMS have warned that the total damages caused by this storm may be in hundreds of million dollars, if not billions.

An evacuation order is currently in place in Kalinko Province on the east of Guthil, which is expected to be hit the hardest during the passage of this typhoon.

Parasites in Nampula

An outbreak of a rare disease has emerged in the Nampula region. The doctors, sent by the state, believe they have discovered where this disease can occur.
The majority of cases have been in coastal regions. It is believed that it is due to the food that the people of Nampula follow. They mainly feed on fish. This fish, in particular, has been discovered to be contaminated by an invasive parasitic species.

It is believed to be a parasitic species that somehow managed to get from the coast of India. We are very surprised that it has reached this point, above all due to the short life expectancy of these parasites. There is not yet a treatment effective enough to be able to worry about the problem.

As Talks Dissolve at Conference, High Chancellor is Voted Out

As talks at the International Trade Conference fall apart, the High Chancellor has been voted out of office. Earlier this day the Council of Chancellor's made a Vote of No Confidence, effectively ousting the High Chancellor from the government.

This may come at a surprise to foreign media, but the fall of Audric Charpentier has been brewing for quite some time. A Personality Politician, his terms were riddled with grandiose actions that were merely for show. His ineptitude at the basic executive responsibilities of Foreign Relations and Diplomacy between Confederates, both of which are extremely important to voters in Oceanor. His one major accomplishment was the construction of the Panama Canal, but that project was years overdue and billions of dollars over budget. His actions following completion of the Canal have proven a fatal blow in his political career.

With the High Chancellor leaving office in two days, to be temporarily replaced by High Arbiter Fernando Krüger, the election process is already beginning. The process is expected to be especially exciting this year. Audric Charpentier's ancient Minority Coalition most likely has no chance, but many new parties are rearing to make a stand, and older parties just as eager. No nominations have yet been revealed, but many parties are expected to release their picks in the coming days.

As the Personality Politics and grandiose gestures of Audric Charpentier come to an end, Oceanor is ready for the change. His last effort, the Global Trade Organization, is left a burning pile of rubble. Regulations for the Panam Canal have yet to be made. And international crises are in the midst of creation. The next High Chancellor will certainly have their work cut out for them.

Protests turned into riots today, as protesters looted stores and started fires. The organization which organized this protest are the citizens against Fascists, while a different organization organized a counter protest. 3 groups met in the main city plaza, and overturned police barricades.

We spoke to Police Commissioner Peter Dietrich, who had this to say.

'It was regrettable that these protests turned violent. I wholly disagree with many of these groups, but the right of the people is not to be infringed on. The police performed admirably, and did the right thing. The protests were out of control." He continued his monologue for 40 minutes, before commending the officers who were there.

At 5:00, 6/10, The groups met on the main plaza things quickly turned violent, as a car rammed through the protestors.

At 5:30, 6/10, riot police moved in.

At 6:00, 6/10, the square had been emptied.

ROME, ASTORIA SUDDENLY DISSAPEAR, LEAVING SCIENTISTS BAMBOOZLED

Scientists noted a former void in the location of the Roman Republic, devoid of life. Meanwhile, the local inhabitants, seemed to show no knowledge of either Astoria nor the Roman Republic. As most countries start to observe radio silence, leaving the population of the UGF confused and dazed. Conspiracy theories have started to pop up, leading to massive protests from Radical Christian and Muslim groups, which proclaim the end of the world. Multiple cities are currently on fire, as police struggle to contain these riots, leading to a emergency authorization of military assets. Bundeswehr and armée de Terre moved into the square, using blanks and CS gas to successfully contain these riots. Vice President Johansen gave a strict conndemnation of the violence, and said that rioting would be met with force. Meanwhile, scientists are currently drafting up theories.
