Rules/Procedure

A group stage win earns a team 3 points. During the group stage, there will be no ties, and all games, if necessary, will be settled with a 5 minute 3-on-3 overtime followed by a shootout. An overtime or shootout win grants 2 points, and an overtime or shootout loss grants 1 point.

After the group stage, the top 2 teams in each group will automatically advance to the Round of 16. The final 4 spots will go to the top 4 3rd-placed group finishers, who will be seeded based on points, and goal difference. To determine Round of 16 matchups, the advancing teams will also be seeded, based on points, goal difference, and goals for. Seed #1 will play seed #16, and so on. After each round, the tournament will be re-seeded.

During the playoff rounds, there will be no shootout. Tied games after regulation will go to continuous 5 on 5 20-minute sudden-death overtime to determine a winner.

The tournament will be scored with xkoranate 0.3.3, using the SQIS formula developed by Saintland. As there are no ranks for this tournament, RP bonus will be generous. If you so desire, a style modifier ranging from -5 to +5 can be added to your roster. -5 represents a defensive hockey team, +5 an offensive minded one.

Welcome/Wilkommen/Dobre Doshli!

With the United Republics of Siovanija and Teusland playing host to the 14th World Junior Hockey Championship, the Ministry of Sport and Ministry of Tourism have united to provide spectators and teams traveling to the country with a guide to help make their stay the best possible. We'd like to offer all those visiting our country for the first time a big welcome, and best of luck on the ice - unless you face our Goldhorns!

National Information and Modern History

The United Republics of Siovanija and Teusland is located in the Southwestern region of Atlantian Oceania. A democratic republic, the country is composed of two distinct nations: the Teus, living in the eastern half of the country, and the Siovanijans in the west. The two nations are for the most part split by the Mittelgebirge mountain range that runs roughly along the halfway point of the island.

The history of the islands has usually been one of conflicts between these competing nations. For hundreds of years, Siovanija and Teusland struggled against each other for dominance over the other. Each nation claimed major victories over the other, and it seemed they would be in conflict perpetually. Teusland enjoyed a long period of dominance throughout the late 17th, 18th and first half of the 19th centuries during which it expanded beyond its borders and created a colonial empire. The Teus Empire was at its peak during this period of time, and was one of the largest naval powers in the world.

It faced troubles at home, however, and eventually liberal republicans in Siovanija rose up in cities like Vlaikograd, Chernovets and Siovanska Gora, with the city of Borograd being the heart of these demonstrations. Teusland initially attempted to put down the rebellion, but the Siovanijans grew in conviction as this continued to happen. Worried about the potential cost of a drawn-out guerilla campaign, as well as fearing the revolutionary ideas spreading to the Teus population, the Empire granted independence to Siovanija on July 3, 1808.

The new Siovanijan Republic had a tumultuous youth. Its leaders debated how far their nation should take the revolutionary cause. There were three key factions in the Republic’s politics at that time: the liberals, the nationalists and the Dialikovites. The liberals wanting to maintain and build on what had already been achieved through independence. The nationalists wanted to grow the Republic’s power to take back the lands of the Korjava/Vest-Marlebucht region. This area was equally split 50/50 between Teus and Siovanijans. The Teus Empire had maintained the region as part of its Empire upon independence, and the Siovanijans wanted it back. This area contained the major port city of Pomorie, also known as Marzig. The Dialikovites, named for their leader Anton Dialikov, were the most extreme and advocated for radical changes to the state.

The liberals held much of the power in the early days of the Republic, but as time went on the nationalists grew and grew in power, eventually taking control of the National Parliament in 1865. They immediately embarked on a program to build up the nation’s military, which had been neglected in the years since independence. They also demanded Teusland give economic rights to the Pomorie region and some territories of the western Korjava to Siovanija outright. Teusland, caught up in a series of colonial wars at the time, wanted to avoid what would be a costly and bloody war, and in the 1873 Marzig Declaration granted these demands. This move was widely opposed by the average Teus citizen, and opposition to the Imperial government began to rise.

Tensions between the states continued to rise over the following years, as Teusland continued to make some concessions and Siovanija continued to make demands. These tensions would eventually boil over. In 1888, a Teus army officer shot a Siovanijan demonstrator in Pomorie/Marzig. There were mass protests in the city by Siovanijans, and the Teus government cracked down hard on them. Siovanija responded by occupying the mountain pass connecting the rest of Teusland with the city, shutting down rail transport to the city. Teusland warned it would take ‘any and all means necessary to secure our territory.’ and sent a division to retake the passage. It is unclear which side fired the first shot of the war due to conflicting reports, but the Teus Army won this battle and pushed through to the city. 4 days later, Siovanija declared war on Teusland.

The situation in 1888 militarily placed the states roughly even. Teusland had much more fighting experience, having in the previous years fought and won several colonial wars. In addition to a slightly larger population, the Teus could also call upon soldiers from the colonies to fight for them. The army had, however, gotten complacent in the wake of their victories and thus were not as technologically advanced. Siovanija, on the other hand, had relatively little fighting experience but could call on a technological advantage as well as a well-developed industrial base within the country. Each side believed it would defeat the other in a matter of months.

As is often the case with promised ‘short’ wars, however, that did not occur. The Teus won many of the initial skirmishes along the border, and pushed Siovanijan troops back beyond Pomorie/Marzig, the centre of conflict. This remained the focal point of fighting in the early stages of the war. Air superiority and technological advantage allowed the Siovanijans to finally push the Teus in Marzig back to the border after heavy fighting. The fighting stalled, however, in the Mittelgebirge. Each side dug in for what would become the worst phase of the war.

The mountain warfare continued for the rest of the war. Long, bloody battles were fought over strategic passes, forts and mountain tops, usually never ending in a truly decisive victory for either side. Teusland’s troops from the colonies were rendered ineffective, most of them having never seen snow in their lives, let alone a blizzard or avalanche. Siovanija used their air advantage to harm Teus supply lines and harass urban centres such as Stahlberg and Stelburg. By 1892, however, Teus air technology had caught up to their rivals and these campaigns were halted. Popular opinion in both countries had turned heavily against the war, as millions died on each side for virtually no ground gained.

By the end of 1894, each side was looking for a way out of the war. For Siovanija, it was quickly becoming clear that their army would not be able to hold out much longer as the Teus had adapted much better to the gruelling campaigns and had almost caught up to them in technological advancements. Teusland, however, faced a problem on the homefront: food shortages in rural areas due to the amount being sent to the front, and the new Sparta-Korps, anti-war and, for the first time in history, pro-unification, was growing rapidly. Protests in Stelburg to end the war intensified.

In March 1895, both sides agreed to a ceasefire. The Pomorie/Marzig question would be settled with referenda in different parts of the region over which state each area wanted to join. This was massively opposed by the majority of both nations, who wondered why they had lost millions of sons/brothers/fathers over 7 years for virtually no change. Almost 4.2% of Teusland’s population had become casualties, and around 4.0% for Siovanija. The Sparta-Korps openly marched in the streets of St. Jakob, Felsenkirchen and Stahlberg demanding the end of the monarchy and unification between Siovanija and Teusland. Over the next few months, the food crisis in Teusland got worse and there were riots in the streets of Stelburg, an Imperial stronghold and the capital. The situation was becoming untenable.

On September 23, 1895, Kaiser Heinrich III abdicated the throne, fleeing to the Teus colony of Sankt Konrad. The Sparta-Korps stormed the Sanssouci Palace and proclaimed a Republic of Teusland. In the election that soon followed, the SK won a massive majority on a pro-unification campaign. Starting in December 1895, talks began between the governments of Siovanija and Teusland on unification. This was achieved on May 4, 1896, known as the National Day of the new United Republics.

The new nation faced a series of struggles as a series of nationalist Siovanijan Presidents held office. They restricted pensions for Imperial Teus Army veterans, dismantled the rights of Teus-speakers in the Korjava, and handed the Teus lands little power economically. Frustration in Teusland was growing, and the United Republics were quite divided. Those in Siovanija often voted for the National Liberal Party, while Teus voters supported overwhelmingly the National Union. The NLP gerrymandered districts in contested regions, however, to prevent the NU from gaining power.

Over the years, however, the NU could not be held back, and Marwin Laufer was elected President in 1940 on the back of 93% support in Teusland. His main support group was former soldiers and ardent Teus nationalists/monarchists, who rallied around him and attacked opponents in the streets. Laufer promised to bring Teusland back from the abyss, and during his term in office restricted rights of Siovanijans, transferred much of the nation’s industries to Teusland, and made Teus the official language of business and the military. Laufer and the NU planned to eventually declare Teusland again independent and then proceed to invade Siovanija. Laufer was defeated, however, in an election by Milan Dimitrov.

Dimitrov is regarded as the father of the modern-day United Republics, as he focused on creating a shared sense of identity between each rather than the revenge-driven politics of the early period. Under Dimitrov, many differences were reconciled and each group was given enshrined equality in the constitution. Dimitrov was in power for 16 years and is widely regarded to date as the greatest President of the United Republics. In the years since his rule, Siovanija and Teusland has developed into one of the strongest nations in the world. It enjoys a strong economy as well as a strong value placed on civil liberties and human rights. The United Republics of Siovanija & Teusland have overcome a turbulent past to truly become a united, strong state.

Language

There are two official languages in the United Republics: Siovanijan and Teus. As the World Junior tournament will be held entirely in Teusland, you would do well to familiarize with this language first, but we do encourage teams and fans, if possible, to get to see the other half of the country as well. Many Siovanijans will also be travelling to watch this tournament, and so it may be useful to pick up some of the basics.

The Teus language is based in the Latin script, and has developed over the 2000-year history of the Teus peoples. It is the majority language in Teusland, and an official government language. You will see it on signs in all of Teusland, parts of Siovanija near the border, and in larger Siovanijan cities. It is spoken by about 56% of the population as a mother tongue.

The Siovanijan language is also based in the Latin script, and developed over the history of the Siovanijan peoples. Until 1937, however, the language was based in the Cyrillic script. Often on old buildings or in rural areas, you will still see this script. For example, in many towns on the western coast near Trkev, Cyrilic is still used on street signs over Latin. You will see Siovanijan on signs in all of Siovanija, parts of Teusland near the border and in larger Teus cities. It is spoken by about 44% of the population as a mother tongue.

83% of the country is fluently bilingual. English is a commonly-spoken language among young people and is often used in media. Additionally, cities like St. Jakob (largest in the Republics) are quite cosmopolitan, and many other foreign languages can be heard.

One important thing to note for those planning on driving or taking the train is that some Siovanijan cities have different names in Teusland. The most obvious example is the city of Pomorie (Siovanijan) or Marzig (Teus). Other examples include the cities of Chernovets (Karnowitz), Bukovets (Bucowitz), Siovanska Gora (Siowenienberg) and even the capital, Borograd (Borburg). On highway signs approaching the border in Teusland, these names will be used over the official name, except Borograd, which will be signed as Borograd/Borburg.

Weather

The World Juniors will be held during the winter months. The city of Stelburg, located more inland, is famous for its chilly winters. St. Jakob, the other host city, is located on the sea, and thus won't be as cold and doesn't experience much snow. Stelburg is famous for being rainy in the spring and summer, and it is equally snowy in the winter. Over the years, Stelburgers have become accustomed to this, however, and what's considered normal to them might be different for some visitors. One cool effect of this weather is that the River Drai freezes over, allowing Stelburgers to go skating along the famous river. On a walk by the river side, you can encounter several games of pick-up hockey being played, and the skateway can be very busy. Our advice for visitors would be to make sure you bundle up.

Sporting Culture

The most popular sport in the United Republics is ice hockey. The national game of the country, it is played and watched by the vast majority of the nation’s population. Due to the long winters in much of the country, winter sports tend to be the most popular. The national hockey team has had some success over the years, and is currently ranked 5th in the world after World Cup of Hockey 39. The second most popular sport is football, where the national team just recently qualified for World Cup 84, and the domestic league is on the rise on the world stage. Cricket is popular in Teusland, with a team representing Teusland competing in GCF international events. Basketball is somewhat popular in Siovanija, while gridiron football is on the rise in the country as well. Hockey, however, is king, and the Saturday night broadcast of Ehrenliga games is usually the most-watched TV program of the week. Junior hockey is also quite popular, and many teams are the 'only show in town' in some areas, making them a symbol of their communities. The Siovanijan Hockey League (SHL) and the Teus Major Junior Hockey League (TMJHL) have 14 teams each, and the top teams from each league compete each year for the national championship. College hockey is somewhat on the rise as well, but isn't yet seen as a main pathway to professional play. The U20 national team for this World Junior championship is likely to receive massive support from the nation, and the expectation on them from fans will be to win this tournament at home. Arenas will be full for nearly all tournament games, with the 'Goldhorns Pack' - all games played by the national team - selling out within 5 minutes of being available online. All games will be aired nationally on the Republic Sports Network (RSN), and the hype is real for this event.

Host Cities

After a bidding period , the cities of Stelburg and St. Jakob were chosen to host this tournament, beating bids from Borograd/Chernovets and Felsenkirchen/Rotmunde. 3 arenas in each city will be used to host the tournament.

The city of Stelburg is the third-largest city in the United Republics of Siovanija and Teusland. Founded in 979, the city quickly rose to prominence within Teusland, and served as its national capital. As Teusland grew, gradually, into an Empire with possessions overseas, Stelburg was its centrepiece: home of the palaces and manors in which important people made important decisions. The Teus Empire peaked in the late 1700s and early 1800s, and much of the old architecture in Stelburg dates to this time, including the famous Sanssouci Palace. After the Civil War, and the unification process, Stelburg found itself, for the first time in its history, on the outs: no longer the capital, and no longer 'the centre of the world,' as Stelburgers once saw themselves. The early period was hard, due to remaining political struggle in the 'United' Republics, and Stelburg faced a decline in this time period.

By the 1950s, however, much of the old wounds had been healed, and Stelburg was on the rise again, its historic character making it one of the most important cities in the country. President Milan Dimitrov declared that, "If Borograd is our political capital, and St. Jakob our financial capital, then Stelburg is our cultural capital." The National Art Gallery, the National History Museum, the Imperial Museum, and other major cultural institutions can be found in the city. The National Music Conservatory has its headquarters here, and the national opera and ballet companies are both found in the city, it having once been a hub of Teus composers. Balls are still regularly held in the various manors and palaces across the city, and the celebrations can last long into the night. The national football and hockey teams play their games in the city, for the most part. The Stelburg Kaisers are the most successful hockey team in the country, and FC Teussen Stelburg the most successful football team. Today, Stelburg is home to nearly 3 million people in its metro area.

Popular sites to see in Stelburg include the aforementioned cultural buildings. The most famous street in the city is the Teuslandstrasse, which runs east-west in the downtown core. At the west end, it terminates in front of the grounds of the Central Palace, with its lush gardens - and also the grounds of the Imperial Oval, the national cricket oval. It then continues along eastwards past several important government buildings and offices, with monuments and memorials to wars of long ago in the middle, as well as a well-kept garden. It crosses the River Drai on the Kaiser-Wilhelm-III Bridge, before terminating at the Nationalplatz. There are 12 monuments along the route, mostly dedicated to old wars/important leaders. The largest of these is the Civil War memorial, the last one on the street. It depicts a Siovanijan soldier and a Teus soldier embracing, and is captioned: 'Never again will brothers fight'. On the base of the monument are the names of each of the 3.4 million soldiers killed in the conflict on both sides. The Nationalplatz itself is another tourist attraction, considered the centre of the town: the old city, with the one-time Imperial Chancellory - now the Republic of Teusland's government offices - at the north end. Side streets are lined with the city's famous coffee houses, or bakeries - one might try a Stelburger donut.

As a city, Stelburg has come to represent both old and modern interpretations of Teusland, and looks forward to welcoming visitors for the World Juniors. The Stelburger Eispalast arena is located just a few steps away from the Nationalplatz downtown, and is considered the national 'cathedral' of hockey, home to the Stelburg Kaisers. The Blaukard Centre is a 10 minute drive from the city centre, and is home to Eisbaren Stelburg. The Edelweiss Garten, meanwhile, is located a few blocks north of the Eispalast, and is home to the Stelburg Edelweiss junior hockey club.

The other co-hosting city is St. Jakob, officially St Jakob an der Drai. Located at the mouth of the River Drai, where it meets the Ostsee, St. Jakob grew rapidly as Teusland expanded in the 1600s, as the main commercial port of a marine empire. People flocked to the city from across Teusland, and eventually Siovanija as well. Soon, the city was even seeing immigration from the colonies, such as Sankt Konrad and Prinz-Eugens-Land. Soon, St. Jakob had become the biggest city of the empire, and the hub of its navy and merchant marine. Compared to the more conservative Stelburg, St. Jakob has always been a bit more cosmopolitan, and it adapted much easier to the end of the empire.

Today, St. Jakob is the biggest city in Siovanija & Teusland, with a population of over 4 million. In addition to people from across the United Republics and its former colonies, the city is also home to cultural minorities from nearby nations, such as, for example, the vibrant Banijan community in the city. Many of the United Republics' biggest companies find their head offices in the city, and it is the financial powerhouse of the country. The Bank of Teusland (TeusBank), the biggest bank in the nation, is headquartered here, and the national stock market is centred on the Uberseealle street in the downtown. While Stelburg's downtown features palaces and museums, St. Jakob's features skyscapers and office towers. Sporting-wise, the St. Jakob Saints are one of the most successful Ehrenliga teams in recent history, led by captain Gunter Pfenning - the best S&T player of his generation - while FC St. Jakob have had their struggles in recent years.

St. Jakob is a massive city, and there are many sites to see. The downtown core itself is an attraction, as is the still-busy port - St. Jakob still serves as the primary commercial port of the nation. The old Harbour Lighthouse, built in 1686, is a famous symbol of the city, as is the Mouth of the Drai Bridge, which gives great views looking out to the ocean or the city skyline. St. Jakob is a much more fast-paced, cosmopolitan city compared to any other found in Siovanija & Teusland, and its unique character makes it a great place to visit.

The main arena in St. Jakob is the St. Jakob Forum, one of the most famous arenas in the country. It is home to the St. Jakob Saints of the Ehrenliga, as well as the Junior Saints in the TMJHL. It is located right in the downtown core, and is within walking distance of most of the city's central attractions. The Prenzlauer Eispalast will also be used for tournament games. It is host to EHC Kosmopolit of the Ehrenliga, as well as the St. Jakob Crusaders of the Banijan hockey league. The arena is located in the district of Prenzlau, on the north side of the Drai in the central part of the city. Finally, the St. Jakob host committee decided to use the Arena Johan-Beck in Tarnitz as the final area. Tarnitz is a suburb of the city located about a 15 minute drive north of the downtown core, and the arena is home to the Tarnitz Tornadoes of the TMJHL.

Kalactanian Squad for the 14th World Juniors

Almost the neither team is made up of players playing in college or major AAA leagues. The reason for a lack of teams at the junior level is because of laws that prevent kids from being paid for sports until they are 18. The Kalactanian squad this year is a speed-heavy team, many of the kids on the team are under 6-0 so it will be interesting to see how they fare against more physical teams

Sarzonia Junior Stars

Style modifier: 0

Coach Martin Pelleur, age 49
Pelleur was tapped to manage the Junior Stars based on his work developing the coaching programme for Sarzonian junior hockey. Sarzonia's Incorporated Ice Hockey Federation realises the team would likely be behind the eight ball compared with other teams, so they lean on Pelleur's patience with what they expect to be a lengthy process. Pelleur's pedigree is working with offence.

Assistant Coach Brett Tanguay, Sr. Age 41
The team's defence-minded assistant coach will handle the defencemen and defensive forwards even though his son Brett, Jr. is an offensive forward on the team.

Goaltending Coach Todd Ranford, age 46
Ranford spent four years after his retirement as a goalie working as a studio analyst for Sarzonian Hockey Channel broadcasts, but is itching for a chance to go behind the bench. This is his first coaching experience.

Trainer/Team Physician Clayre Bennett, age 47
Bennett earned a medical degree after her five-year playing career in a women's hockey league in Delaclava ended. She is eager to play her trade with a competitive sport team.

ROSTER (Starters/first line in BOLD)

Goaltenders
1 Owen Franks, 20, 6-foot-1, 195 pounds
Franks is a stand up goalie who plays the puck well and can be a weapon when the Stars are shorthanded. He scored a goal into an empty net during a college game last season.
31 Carter Liut, 18, 5-foot-9, 175 pounds
Liut employs a butterfly style and relies heavily on his reflexes to make up for his lack of experience in goal. Needs work on his puck handling skills.
35 Connor Whalen, 20, 5-foot-11, 190 pounds
Tends toward the butterfly style of play. He has some puck handling skills, but is just coming back from an extended absence due to a torn knee ligament.

Defencemen
2 Joel Roessel, 19, 6-foot-1, 205 pounds
Makes up for relative lack of size with agility and a sixth sense of knowing where and when to play the puck. Can deliver terrifying checks.
3 Mike Stevens, 20, 6-foot, 200 pounds
Also not the biggest guy, nut is blindingly fast and reads the situation on ice very well. He has strong chemistry with Roessel.
13 Hunter Abrams, 18, 6-foot-4, 235 pounds
Abrams has the size and just enough speed to deliver powerful checks. He doesn't like getting into fights, but won't hesitate to in order to defend himself or a teammate.
19 Larry Rollins, 18, 6-foot 2, 200 pounds
He doesn't have the size of his defensive partner, but has more speed. They are roommates and get on well, though they are learning to play together.
25 Ashleigh Whitfield, 20, 5-foot-9, 175 pounds
Whitfield has been playing hockey almost her entire life and uses positioning and her ability to read the tendencies of her opponents to overcome her lack of size. She won't hesitate to mix it up in the corner or drop the gloves if necessary.
27 Christian Channing, 19, 6-foot-4, 225 pounds
Another heavy checker and aggressive presence on ice, he is quick to defend Whitfield or any teammate if needed.
36 Cal Isaacs, 20, 6-foot, 205 pounds
He's there to provide depth for the defence and could be an emergency goalie if all three goalies were unable to suit up or play.

Forwards
Left Winger 10 Josh Evans
, 20 5-foot-11, 175 pounds
He's the guy who plays every shift as if his family's honour depended on it. He's frequently mucking up in the corner scrums and can score on occasion.
Centre 8 George Anderson, 19, 6-foot-1, 195 pounds
He wins faceoff and distributes the puck extremely well and is a key presence on the power play. He can be deceptive with his shot and score goals.
7 Brett Tanguay, Jr., 20, 6-foot-1, 215 pounds
He has skill and power, and fires a blistering shot from the point. The son of the defence-minded assistant coach is as offence-minded as it gets.
12 LW Jamie Preston, 19, 5-foot-8, 170 pounds
He spends a lot of time in the weight room when he isn't focused on hockey. He has some defensive skills and will work shorthanded shifts.
14 C Joyce Bradley, 18, 5-foot-4, 145 pounds
She uses speed and positioning to make up for lack of size. She can pinpoint passes right on the tape of just about any Junior Stars player.
17 RW Nate Tyson, 17, 6-foot-5, 218 pounds
He's an imposing presence, especially on the penalty kill, even though he's as gentle as they come off the ice. He has good puck handling and shooting skills.
18 LW Yves St. Louis, 19, 5-foot-10, 185 pounds
He has a laser of a lefty shot from the point and scored 26 goals in an abbreviated 50-game schedule for his junior league. He's coming off an injury to his hamstring that likely cost him a spot on the first line.
20 C Xavier Healey, 20, 6-foot, 197 pounds
He's likely to be called upon in late game situations in the event the Stars need to win a faceoff in a close match. At the very least, he can provide backup if the main faceoff centre gets kicked out of the dot.
21 RW Alan Wilkins, 19, 6-foot-1, 205 pounds
Wilkins is a regular presence on his team's penalty kill unit and is one of Sarzonia's best defensive forwards.
23 LW Quinn Hadley, 20, 6-foot-4, 225 pounds
Hadley is on the Stars checking line for a reason. He also serves as the team's enforcer and led his league in penalty minutes.
28 C Frank Teague, 19, 6-foot-1, 210 pounds
He is also a checking line player, but more because of his defensive prowess.
29 RW Dave Johns, 18, 6-foot-3, 215 pounds
He's a defensive forward who has surprisingly deft touch with the puck and can be a surprisingly strong threat to score.

Siovanija & Teusland National U20 Hockey Team

Facts

Nation Name: United Republics of Siovanija and Teusland
Short Names: Siovanija and Teusland, the United Republics
Demonyms: Siovanijan, Teus
Governing Body: Hockey Siovanija and Teusland
Colours: Blue, gold, white
Anthem: ‘High Mountain Skies’
Highest Domestic League: Ehrenliga (Junior Leagues: SHL & TMJHL)
Nicknames: The Goldhorns
Style Modifier: +3

Head Coach: Otto Heiskel (Stelburg Edelweiss, TMJHL)

Otto Heiskel gets the nod from Hockey S&T to coach the national junior team at the World Junior Hockey Championship. The legendary Stelburg Edelweiss coach and general manager will bring his philosophy to the junior team. Heiskel’s game is about beating the other team through speed and strength, but it is his man-management and experience that may be most valuable here. There will be huge pressure on this team to perform, at home, and for them to take home the gold. Heiskel, as coach of probably the most-followed junior club in the country, is used to that, and with his many years of experience as a coach in the TMJHL should be able to help the players work through that pressure. These players will be dealing with the expectation of fans, of media, and also the knowledge that Ehrenliga scouts will be watching their every move in this tournament. Heiskel, known for his ability to stay calm under pressure, could be invaluable to helping the team rise above it all and succeed.

Roster

Player information will be listed in the following manner: position, name, age, junior club (Ehrenliga club if applicable), number.

Goaltenders

G - Max Fichter - 19y/o - Launitz Lions (Rotmunde) - #1
G - Oto Klemenc - 19y/o - Venkovets Vipers (Trkev) - #30
G - Valentin Egger - 18y/o - Tarnitz Tornadoes (Draft eligible) - #31

This was the most scrutinized position in the training camps leading up to the tournament: who would play goal for the Edelweiss? Max Fichter appears to have won the starting job, the Launitz Lions goalie leading the TMJHL in GAA and save percentage before the World Juniors break. A draft pick of the Rotmunde Hurricanes, Fichter’s butterfly style and size have contributed to his success. Backing him up is likely to be another 19 year old, Oto Klemenc, a HK Rudar Trkev draft pick, who is quite an athletic goalie. Finally, Valentin Egger gets the call as the third goalie, expected to go in the 3rd-4th rounds in the draft this year. Egger has been solid for Tarnitz all year in the TMJHL, and will gain some valuable experience here. Fichter will likely get 2 games in the group stage, Klemenc the other, with Egger coming in in case of injury.

Defencemen

D - Evgeni Tomic - 19y/o - Piran Pirates (Chernovets) - #2
D - Darko Pahor - 18y/o - Borograd Bulls (Draft eligible) - #3
D - Emil Lanner - 19y/o - Lensbruck Muskies (St. Jakob) - #4
D - Oliver Neurath - 19y/o - Giesenau Bearcats (Felsenkirchen) - #5
D - Jaroslav Zevnik - 17y/o - Piran Pirates (Draft eligible) - #6
D - Marco Belek - 18y/o - St. Jakob Jr. Saints (Draft eligible) - #24
D - Andrija Babic - 18y/o - Stavropol Seagulls (Draft eligible) - #25

Most of the attention here, and rightfully so, will fall on Evgeni Tomic. The big 6’7 defender was voted the most difficult player to play against in the SHL last season, and was drafted by Energija Chernovets 4th overall. Tomic can hit harder than anyone in the national junior ranks, and is almost impossible to beat in netfront battles. He also has a cannon for a slap-shot. Paired up with him is a more puck-moving player in Darko Pahor. The Borograd Bulls defender leads the SHL in points by a defenceman this season, most of them coming off power-play assists. Combined with Tomic, they’ll make a formidable pair, and together on the power-play? It’ll be tough to stop them. Emil Lanner, the St. Jakob Saints draft pick, is mainly an offensive defenceman, skilled at moving the puck out and getting it forward. Oliver Neurath, meanwhile, is a bit more stay-at-home, he and Lanner also pair up well together. Scouts will be watching young Jaroslav Zevnik, the only 17 year old on this team, and he’ll be expected to play a big role in this tournament. He has great passing vision, and is arguably one of the best skaters on this team. He’s been talked about as a potential first-overall pick in the season 4 Ehrenliga draft, not being eligible for the season 3 draft this summer due to a late birthday. Marco Belek is a bigger body on the blueline, and a more calming presence in his own zone that should help alongside Zevnik. Andrija Babic is the 7th man here, a good skater who will be trying to work his way into some extra minutes in the tournament games.

Left Wing

LW - Rafael Werner - 19y/o - Marzig Jr. Wolves (Felsenkirchen) - #11
LW - Edmund Debevic - 18y/o - Borograd Bulls (Draft eligible) - #71
LW - Anton Merkatz - 18y/o - Venkovets Vipers (Draft eligible) - #27
LW - Nico Mayer - 19y/o - Stelburg Edelweiss (Stelburg Kaisers) - #26

Rafael Werner is the biggest threat on the wing for the Goldhorns, a dynamic scorer who was tied for the SHL lead in points before departing for the national team training camp. He’s known for being a fighter along the boards, using his body to win pucks. He’s a strong player, and it’s tough to knock him off the puck, which when combined with excellent passing vision makes him a dangerous playmaker. Edmund Debevic is expected to be a top 10 pick this year, the Borograd Bulls winger probably the fastest skater on this team. He’s also very skilled on the puck, and can beat defenders before they even make a move against him. Anton Merkatz, a projected first rounder this year, is a bit more of a power-forward, able to get into battles along the boards and in front of the net due to his size. Nico Mayer brings some scoring depth to the fourth line, he’s excellent at making space for himself and leads the Stelburg Edelweiss in goals.

Right Wing

RW - Aleksej Knejz - 18y/o - Siovanska Gora Stars (Draft eligible) - #93
RW - Anton Pelko - 19y/o - Venkovets Vipers (Olympia Borograd) - #65
RW - Benedikt Ressel - 19y/o - Lensbruck Muskies (Marzig) - #21
RW - Konstantin Lehner - 19y/o - Giesenau Bearcats (Ternau) - #29

Aleksej Knejz is the man who scouts will be watching all tournament long. The projected #1 pick in this summer’s Ehrenliga draft, Knejz is a goalscoring power forward similar in mold to Razvigor Tsvetanov. He leads the SHL in goals, and was 3rd in points, at the break, and is well on track to break the SHL goals record (currently 62, Knejz is on pace for 65). A powerful winger, his wrist shot is like a rocket off his stick, and his ability on the puck is almost magical, almost every goal he scores is highlight reel worthy. He’ll be expected to carry much of the goalscoring load for the team this tournament, and will be looking to establish himself as a dominant player here. The bottom three lines are filled out with already-drafted wingers. Anton Pelko has a wicked one-timer, he’ll be a good choice on the point for the second powerplay unit. Benedikt Ressel and Konstantin Lehner, meanwhile, are more big bodies capable of fighting for and winning the puck to give to their linemates. Ressel in particular is a hard-nosed player who gives 110% every shift.

Centre

C - Leon Goss - 19y/o - Marzig Jr. Wolves (Marzig) - #10
C - Karel Medved - 18y/o - Vlaikograd Lakers (Draft eligible) - #9
C - Drazenko Skrlj - 18y/o - Piran Pirates (Draft eligible) - #15
C - Mario Boltzmann - 19y/o - Stelburg Edelweiss (Stahlberg) - #19
C - Elias Nalder - 18y/o - Magesbach Mariners (Draft eligible) - #13

Leon Goss was the number 1 pick in last year’s Ehrenliga draft, and the dynamic centre will have a starring role on this team. It’s been a storybook career so far: born in Marzig, played for the Jr. Wolves, then drafted first overall by the Marzig Wolves to play in the Ehrenliga. He’s a speedy, pass-minded centre who should fit in perfectly beside Rafa Werner and Aleksej Knejz. Werner and Goss have great chemistry together with the Jr. Wolves, while Knejz and Goss in particular could make a very effective partnership. Karel Medved is expected to be a top 5 pick in the upcoming draft, he’s a big, goalscoring centre who is also quite capable of using his body. Drazenko Skrlj is a projected top 10 pick, the Piran Pirates forward is tied for the SHL points lead with Rafa Werner. He’s an excellent playmaker, and quite quick as well. Mario Boltzmann is a faceoff and penalty-killing specialist on the fourth line, trusted by his junior coach to have a big role here, while Elias Nalder fills out the roster as the extra forward.

Units

F2: Debevic - Medved - Pelko

For the World Juniors, the national team will be wearing new jerseys designed by Donnaconan design company Infinite. The new jerseys are very similar to the old, but are a much sleeker look, the ‘Triple Edelweiss’ logo continuing to be front and centre. The writing ‘Siovanija and Teusland’ has been removed, and a black strip added to the bottom of the jerseys. The gold primary uniform will serve as the home jersey for this tournament, with the blue primary uniform serving as the away jersey. “We’re very pleased with the design, and we’d like to thank Infinite for their hard work on these,” said Hockey Siovanija & Teusland in a statement.

Group and Schedule
As the host nation, Siovanija & Teusland have been drawn into Group A, with all games taking place at the Stelburger Eispalast. Group A also contains the nations of Banija, Jeckland and Abahnfleft. The senior Goldhorns faced Banija in their debut World Cup of Hockey, WCoH 35, and faced Abahnfleft in the semifinal of WCoH 38. The nations have never met at the junior level. Jeckland, on the other hand, have never faced the senior Goldhorns and will be a totally new face for fans of Siovanija & Teusland. Let’s take a look at the schedule.

MD1: Siovanija & Teusland vs Jeckland
MD2: Siovanija & Teusland vs Banija
MD3: Abahnfleft vs Siovanija & Teusland

The Goldhorns get things started against Jeckland, the team will be hoping to gel quickly and get off to a good start in that one. Next up will be Southwestern AO neighbours Banija, followed by a final-day clash with Abahnfleft. It’s a tricky group, for sure, but with the backing of the home crowd we’ll be hoping to see the Goldhorns come out on top.

We’ll have complete and total coverage of every second of the WJHC, as the Goldhorns go for gold against some of the world’s best young hockey players. Let’s go Goldhorns!

RSN Hockey
World Juniors Preview

It’s finally here, hockey fans. The World Junior Championship is back.

24 national U20 hockey teams will descend on Stelburg and St. Jakob with one goal in mind: the gold medal. It’s been quite a while since the last WJHC, so it’s difficult to pick a favourite. Defending WCoH champions Cassadaigua will be a force, as will perennial WCoH giants Neu Engollon. The Royal Kingdom of Quebec, Savojarna and Donnacona are other nations to look out for, but in reality, the beauty of the World Juniors is the fact that any of these 24 teams can come away with the gold.

For the host country, however, there’s a bit more at stake. The fans here, across Siovanija & Teusland - and all 74 million of them will be paying attention - are expecting big things from the home side. To expect them to win gold is foolish: who knows what will happen over the coming days. But there is a feeling in the fanbase that this team could go far, if things go well. Our RSN panel decided to identify 3 key things that the Goldhorns will need to do well to win the World Junior Hockey Championship.

#1: Special Teams Success

This might be an obvious answer, but for the Goldhorns to win gold, they’ll need their power-play and penalty kill to get going fast. Special teams always have a key role to play in tournament hockey, but in a World Junior tournament where many teams are playing together for the first time, their role is even more important. Whoever figures it out first has an instant advantage.

So, what’s the key for the Goldhorns? The first power-play unit is going to have to lead the way, and there’s really no reason why it shouldn’t. This unit is stacked with talent, including one of the best-ever junior goalscorers in Aleksej Knejz, and with playmakers like Goss and Werner alongside him, the Goldhorns shouldn’t have trouble getting the offence going. At the point, Evgeni Tomic offers a heavy slap shot if needed, and his partner Dario Pahor is going to be the quarterback of the unit, using his ability to move the puck around.

The second power-play unit is going to be the bigger question. They are all strong players overall, the question will be how quick will chemistry develop, and will they be needed. If the first PP is lights out, we won’t have to worry: if it does falter, these guys will need to come up big. One candidate to have a big tournament here is Edmund Debevic. Debevic is a quick winger who is great on the puck, and his ability to get open and find space could be invaluable here. Another name to watch for on this unit will be Jaroslav Zevnik, the 17-year old defenceman. Zevnik’s being expected to quarterback the unit, a lot of pressure for the young player. He’s been able to handle a great deal of pressure, however, with the Piran Pirates this year, and the Goldhorns will be hoping his excellent passing ability will shine through here.

Killing penalties can be just as important as converting on power-plays, however, and for the Goldhorns, the way is led by Mario Boltzmann. Considered one of the best defensive forwards in the TMJHL throughout his junior career, Boltzmann is excellent on faceoffs and will be expected to take several key draws for the Goldhorns, especially on the PK. Konstantin Ressel, perhaps the hardest-working player on this roster, will be with him on a unit, and the Goldhorns will be tough to score on.

The best way to kill penalties, however, is to not take them. This Goldhorns team doesn’t appear to have any issues with discipline, no player has over 40 PIMs in the SHL or TMJHL this season. The biggest thing for the team will just be keeping that cool, and staying calm under pressure: there’ll be 25,000 fans in the building each night roaring them on, and losing can be frustrating. Ignore that frustration, and focus on getting yourself back in the game.

#2: Goaltending

This is another major factor in tournament hockey. You see it in the Ehrenliga playoffs all the time: David Wagner stole the show two seasons ago in the playoffs to lead the Stelburg Kaisers to a Strauss Cup, recording 6 shutouts in 20 playoff games. A hot goalie can take a team farther than it should go, a cold goalie can send a team home earlier than they should’ve been.

In Max Fichter, the Goldhorns will be hoping to find a hot goalie. The Launitz Lions netminder has posted a 1.78 GAA this season with Launitz, good for the best record in the Teus Major Junior Hockey League. Fichter, at 6’3, covers the net well, and has an excellent glove hand. The Rotmunde Hurricanes selected him in the second round of last year’s draft, and he’s expected to play a key role in that club’s future. What’s better for the Goldhorns is that Fichter is a consistent performer. A streakier goalie can be a blessing or a curse: if he’s hot, great, but if he’s not? Fichter, meanwhile, brings his level of compete and performance most nights in the TMJHL.

The backup option, meanwhile, is Oto Klemenc. Klemenc is more of an athlete than Fichter for sure, and his saves are more likely to end up on RSN’s Highlight of the Night compared to Fichter. He can definitely do a job for this team, likely to get the start against Banija in game #2, and Klemenc will be doing his best in that game to take his chance to earn another start. Coach Otto Heiskel has said that Fichter will be the starter, but he’s a coach that in the past has definitely been open to giving chances to the other guy. If Klemenc does get an opportunity, he’ll need to make sure he takes full advantage of it.

Max Fichter should be a great fit on this Goldhorns’ team. He’s not the type that will go out and win you the game every night, but he’ll very rarely lose it for you either. And with a solid D corp in front of him, that could be exactly what is needed.

#3: Home Ice Advantage

This one can be a blessing, or it can be a curse. The Goldhorns will need to ensure that it serves as a positive force for them.

Playing this tournament on home ice will certainly be an experience for these players, who will have the 25,000 faithful at the Stelburg Eispalast behind them completely for every minute of this tournament. That is, inarguably, the biggest advantage Siovanija & Teusland has here. A hockey-mad country that will be going mad for every single game this team plays. Many of these players will be coming from countries with hockey not as ingrained in the national culture as it is here, and the Goldhorns need to use that to their advantage. Most of these players have played in front of sold-out crowds their entire career, while some teams may have never had that experience. We cannot stress enough how this can be important to the Goldhorns’ chances.

It can also, however, lead to issues. Sure, Max Fichter has kept a 45-save shutout in front of 9,800 fans in Launitz. Now, millions of people will be watching him, hoping for him to do it every single game. That is a new kind of pressure many of these kids just haven’t faced, and it’s one they’ll need to find a way to manage. It’ll be easy to feed off a good run in this tournament: the streets of Stelburg will be packed if they win the opener against Jeckland, let alone make it out of the group. What will be much, much harder is dealing with a loss. While junior hockey is a big deal here, the World Juniors is something new: it’ll be impossible to hide. There will be 20 mics shoved in your face after every game, and if you make a mistake, it’ll be on the TV in every room you enter. It’s not fair for these kids to have to deal with, but they do, and fast. The opening game against Jeckland will be huge for the mentality of this team: if they get out to a quick start, it could be smooth sailing from then on. Anything else, and it could get significantly more rocky.

That’s why Otto Heiskel is a good choice to coach this team. The Stelburg Edelweiss junior team are run like an Ehrenliga club, and their success at the TMJHL and national championship levels backs that up. They are the biggest team in junior hockey, and deal with all the pressure that comes with it. Heiskel is used to having a target on his back - as he will, if things don’t go right here. And he’s also used to getting his players to avoid all the noise and just play hockey. That’s what the Goldhorns need to do here.

So, we’ve gone over the basics of what the Goldhorns need. Let’s check in with our RSN Hockey Panel to see how they think the Goldhorns will do at this tournament:

Paul Blecker: Gold. It’s destiny, it’s meant to be. Heiskel won’t be worried for a second about the pressure, and that will rub off on the team. Once the players hear the anthem roared out in that arena before game 1, there’ll be no looking back.

Georg Muller: Semifinals. I think we have to look and realize that there are a lot of excellent hockey countries in this tournament, and that there can only be 1 winner. I have to agree with Paul that the home ice will be a benefit for this team, but it’s tough to win hockey tournaments, and it’ll be hard for the Goldhorns here as well. I’m not counting them out, but I think it’s hard to call them as a winner before we’ve seen any of the teams play.

Sergei Berezov: Round of 16. I just don’t see this going as expected, honestly. Everyone in the media has coronated them already, saying we’ll be champions. That’s not how hockey works. These are a bunch of 18 and 19 year old kids playing together for the first time. What’s going to happen if Jeckland scores first, and they get booed off after the first period? I think we have a very strong team, I do, but other teams will be looking and saying that all the pressure is on us. And it is, but only because we ourselves have put it there. I hope they prove me wrong, I really do, but I think that at this level, we might need to learn to lose before we learn to win.

The World Junior Hockey Championship gets started next week as the Goldhorns take on Jeckland in game 1. Be sure to tune in on RSN 1, 2, 3 and 4 as Aleksej Knejz and company get ready to take their places on the world stage.

To say the relationship between Brett Tanguay, Sr. and his son Brett, Jr. is unique would be to understate the point.

Senior was right in the middle of his university studies when he got drunk at a local tavern in Corcorran and slept with a sorority woman from the nearby university. Fortunately, instead of "loving and leaving," Senior committed himself to supporting Junior.

It's not like he had much choice. His father was displeased with his son's recklessness and threatened to disown him, although his mother put her foot down and refused to allow it. More importantly, though, Lloyd Tanguay was completely won over by one look at Junior. The "threat" soon was to pull financial support for university if Senior didn't help raise Junior.

Thus, the two Bretts essentially grew up together. Junior developed an interest in hockey and cried when Senior missed out on a spot on the national team for a World Cup of Hockey.

With Lloyd and Senior's mum Clarissa both helping to raise Junior, the two men essentially became something more closely resembling brothers than they did father and son. Thus, the two went out to the same bar where Senior met Junior's mum for a night on the town for Junior's 18th birthday.

Now, the two men were both playing a role with a Sarzonian ice hockey team on a bigger stage than any they could have imagined even six months ago. Junior was a top line forward and arguably the biggest offensive threat the Junior Stars had. Senior was an assistant coach, but he was focusing on the blue liners and the defensive forwards. That meant the two wouldn't cross paths as much as you might expect.

That was perfectly fine for both.

"I don't want people to think I'm pushing him into doing anything he doesn't want to," Senior said. "His style is different from mine, so I just tell him good luck." And, "I love you."

"Dad has a different set of responsibilities and he's going to be focused on getting our defence in the right places on the ice and making sure we're ready for the teams in our group," Junior said.

The two men also acknowledged they potentially could play a vital role in the Sarzonian sporting landscape. They were fully aware that a strong performance in the World Junior Hockey Championship would give Sarzonia's embryonic junior hockey programme a major shot in the arm.

"Success on the world stage translates to stronger support domestically," Senior said. "Look at field hockey. That league was struggling to keep six teams solvent until the national team won," to which Junior interjected, "for the second time."

"Yeah," Senior said. "Now they've increased average attendance by 90 percent in what's now a 10-team league."

Only one question remained for the Bretts. What do they call each other?

"In the practice rink, during games, and whatnot, I call him Coach Tanguay," Junior said.

"I call him Brett," Senior said. "If I were the colour analyst, I'd call him Tanguay. Away from the ice, though, Junior made clear that he called Senior by one name.

"Dad," he said before adding a wry smirk. "Of course, when it's not "FATHERRRR!"

Preview of the WJHC and why Northwest Kalactin can win it
“Hello all we are back here on Sporting News Kalactin I’m Dave Martin and we also have Ken Sanders here, today we have our special World Junior Hockey Championships preview today and after a long hiatus the WJHC is finally back.”

“Yes everyone in Kalactin is very excited for the WJHC this year as the Kalactanians have compiled a very strong team to bring to the Championships this year.”

“Correct, this draft class has been considered one of the best years in the history of Kalactanian Hockey.”

“Yup, this squad is looking very strong although the Kalactanians look to be drawn into one of the strongest groups this year, especially that Sarzonian squad who may be the team to beat this year. Now Dave, do you think that there are any big sleeper teams this year that could preform when people aren’t expecting it?”

“Yes, I see a couple of teams that stand out when looking at them both Terre Septentrionale and Flekkefjord could run the table in group F if they are able to get past Free Republics. Also I see Donnacona who could come out with an easy win in group C if they play well.”

“Yeah, what about Power teams this year are there any teams that you expect to easily win there groups or have a good shot at the title?”

“Yes I think on a normal circumstance Sarzonia would easily win a group, although with Northwest Kalactin and Quebec in this group we could be in for some surprises. Also, I expect hosts Siovanija and Teusland to win their group and punch a ticket to a top seed in the playoffs.”

“What do you think of the playoff format that allows some third place teams in groups to sneak in to the playoffs?”

“Well I think that it really opens the door for teams in tougher groups like our group and Group F, it will allow a third place team from some groups to qualify for a lower seed in the playoffs where, if there able to pull off an upset they could suddenly be in the picture for one of the top teams.”

“Now do you think that the Kalactanian team has any chance at the World Junior Title?”

“Well it depends this first game against Sarzonia will be a pivotal point in the series that we think may decide who finishes first in the group. Now of course if the Kalactanians win that game we could be looking at a very high playoff seed for the team but, if they end up losing they could end up playing a team that was also at a mid-table finish in some other groups also.”

“Why do you think the Kalactanian team can win it?”

“Well I think that their offense will be a strong point for the team this year as they are a very attacking-focused team, that being said if they can make some good stops on defense we could very well be looking at a Championship team this year. Also, it will depend on how many of the 17-18 year olds play as almost all of them are on the first and second lines, but they also do have some experience on the team. One of those experienced players is Aaron Nelson who already plays in the NKHL on North Coffs HC who coasted to a championship season in the NKHL this year. The top defensive pairing is very young with 2 18 year olds starting on defense, now both of them are very good although it will be interesting to see if they are able to play defense on many other young stars like them.”

“Now are we possibly looking at a Kalactanian Junior Hockey League soon?”

“Well it’s been discussed although with the NKHL spiraling into Debt it may not be the best time to start a new league right now. Of course though it’s getting harder and harder for the players to get noticed on Major AAA clubs and college teams as there is not much organization in the associations. The NKHL has talked about an open Draft Combine for kids looking to make the league in their futures although that would Cost the league a lot of money.”

“Ok that’s it for today on Sporting News Kalactin come to us tomorrow to get a one on one with 18 year old first line center John Moore.”

ROSTER FOR THE 14TH WORLD JUNIOR HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP

Image
Sweaters from Infinite, Donnacona's foremost sportswear manufacturer. The vaguely art-deco design within the apple for this tournament is representative of the art deco buildings of the city of Outremont. Let them bring your national hockey team into the new era, TG for details!

Quick background: Donnacona is a continuation of the history hockey power of Cotdelapoms/Marianne, which has agglomerated with Hudson Islands, Isula Reale, Auguste du Nord and Agosto del Sud. To say the sport is a religion in the country would be almost unfair, World Juniors is appointment viewing in Donnacona, and that's for the fans who don't travel to the matches. It's safe to say that despite this tournament taking place in Siovanija & Teusland, it may feel like Donnacona are the home team at times.

FIRST TRIO:
LW- Mikkö Möttöla, 18
C- Daniel Plante, ALTERNATE CAPTAIN, 18
RW- Pierre-Alexandre Tremblay, ALTERNATE CAPTAIN, 19 (property of Saint-Sulpice Rushmoréens)

The big discussion in hockey right now is which of Möttöla and Plante should be the first pick in the next draft, and what a gift for Pierre-Alexandre Tremblay that he gets to play with both in this tournament. There's considerable contrast between the potential top picks- Möttöla is a high risk, high reward pure goal scorer, a volume shooter with an incredible shot who is in the middle of a goal a game season in the LHJMD. Möttöla also has a big body that he loves to throw around and at this level it should be incredibly useful. However there are questions about his commitment, defensive abilities and whether or not he is going to be able to translate those skills at the highest level. Would he face those questions were he pure laine Mariannois? Who knows, but he can potentially change some minds with a big tournament here. Meanwhile, his centre will be Daniel Plante, who is absolutely good enough to play pro right now but likely has highs that are not quite as high. Plante has few real weaknesses, although you'd expect a surefire top two pick to score a few more goals. Alongside both will be Tremblay, who is no slouch on his own- the Rushmoréens are excited about his development, he is a smaller player who likes to get to the net in spite of that. Advanced stats types (and regardless of what you think about advanced stats, they don't carry as much weight at the LHJMD level) really rate Tremblay, as his line is consistently among the best drivers of play in the league.

SECOND TRIO:
LW- Wesley Korzhanenko, 20 (property of Botley Comets)
C- Alexi Dupont, 18
RW- Stefano Russo, 19 (property of Macchinisti Trevona)

Russo is the most interesting of this group, the only Agosto born player in the team (in fact the only player in the team born outside of the former Marianne), and will be carrying a lot of weight for that region after being drafted by Trevona. Russo has the tools to be an elite pro scorer, as he's a smooth skater and a tremendous puckhandler. Korzhanenko is a player who has a lot of fans for his skills at doing the little things, chief among them is national junior head coach Louis Periard. He's got tremendous vision and he goes to the dirty areas, if he can develop a shot he'll be unstoppable. Dupont has tremendous vision and can add a goal or two of his own whilst also being fairly defensively responsible.

THIRD TRIO:
LW- Yoan Lévesque, 17
C- Pierre Kovačević, 19 (property of Dynamo Île d'Élisabeth)
RW- Francois Xavier Lafrenière, 19 (property of Tchérec HC)

Lévesque is a player with quite a lot of intrigue surrounding him as the only 17 year old on the team, and thus not even draft eligible yet. Like so many Donnaconan hockey players, he's technically sound and slick, although he could use to put on some muscle. Against other juniors he can go to the net but he'll get crushed against bigger pros. Kovačević plays a little bit on the edge which can get him in trouble, but he is a fantastic creator and also is willing to crash the net. Lafrenière is a coach's dream on account of his seemingly endless motor, and his speed makes him very dangerous.

FOURTH TRIO:
LW- Logan Lalonde, 18
C- Mickaël Pominville, 18
RW- Mickaël Mariani, 18

All three of these guys are draft eligible, so keep an eye out for this line as potential overperformers. Mariani, whose brother Pascal is a star for Cap Nordique, is probably the best player of these three, if he lives up to his potential he can be a star in the pros. Pominville is safe but unspectacular, and should get some minutes on the penalty kill as a result. He's also the LHJMD's best faceoff taker this season. Logan Lalonde is a wizard with the puck with some questionable tendencies without it, a slightly less intense version of Möttöla, although he carries less skepticism perhaps in equal parts because he's not as good and because he's pure laine.

FIRST PAIRING:
LD- Omar Houde, CAPTAIN, 20 (property of Outremont HC)
RD- Gianmarco Lamontagne, 19 (property of Stalingrad HC)

Houde is a big body with a big slapshot who skates like a much smaller player. For a lot of people in hockey he's the platonic ideal of a defenceman and that has Outremont fans salivating at the prospect of Houde paired with Wojtek Voltavolski, a slicker skating more attack-minded defenceman. They'll likely have to wait until next year, although if they're fans of the national team it'll be worth the wait if Donnacona brings home the trophy. He'll be partnered with Lamontagne, who is never out of position and delights in breaking up plays. He's not a big hitter, but the eye test can be deceiving- he is among the LHJMD's leaders in hits even if they rarely seem crushing.

SECOND PAIRING:
LD- Jérémie Boisvert, 19 (property of Olympique de Marianopolis)
RD- Axel Daigle, 18

OM are the biggest team in hockey and maybe one of the biggest teams in the world of sports, so despite having never played a minute of pro hockey, Boisvert is something of a household name. He has a cannon of a shot and can hit pretty hard, which makes him look good in 5 minute highlights videos with questionable music. Daigle is aggressively handsome and very fast, and is something of a power play quarterback. His vision and stickwork are excellent, but he is not much of a hitter. This duo will not kill penalties due to Boisvert's tendency to occasionally find himself out of position after going for a big hit and Daigle's best asset being his speed.

THIRD PAIRING:
LD- Kazimir Massicotte, 19 (property of Frontenac Érabliers)
RD- Jonathan Talbot, 19 (property of Terrecourbe Athlétique)

Massicotte is a very technically savvy player who like so many good defencemen sometimes can go long stretches without really being noticed. If you want to know where the puck is about to be, look for him. Talbot is similar, but with a little bit more of an edge- it's maybe not fair to call him a sandpaper guy but smaller skaters may want to stay away from his side of the ice, lest they end up a little more sore.

EXTRA SKATERS:
C- Wojciech Cadieux, 18
LW- Jesse Marois, 19 (property of Côte-Est Océanic)
D- Dany Boivin, 19 (property of Botley Comets)

Marois is a high-risk, high-reward, all energy type of player who is on the ice for the most shots (for either team) in the entire LHJMD. Cadieux is a gritty defensive forward and faceoff type. Boivin is a very offensive oriented defenceman who may find himself in the lineup against a lesser light in order to pile on the goals.

GOALTENDERS:
G- Lorenzo St-Onge, 19 (property of Saint-Laurent HC)
G- Cedric Lambert, 19 (property of Lokomotivo Sankt-Petro)
G- Mikko Gavrilovic, 20 (property of Félix Pétroliers)

St-Onge is the undisputed #1 here, easily the best goaltending prospect in the country. He has great technique and excellent rebound control, although it'd be nice if he were just a tiny bit bigger. St-Onge is perhaps the emotional leader of the team despite not being the official captain, and whilst he's not the most famous player on the team, he might be the most respected. Lambert is a similar smaller goalie with great fundamentals, who has the added benefit of not being a liability when forced to handle the puck. Gravilovic is a classic "shot-stopper" who likely won't see the ice.

POWER PLAY UNITS:
1: Möttöla-Plante-Tremblay-Houde-Lamontagne
2: Lévesque-Dupont-Russo-Boisvert-Daigle

PENALTY KILL UNITS:
1: Plante-Tremblay-Houde-Lamontagne
2: Korzhanenko-Pominville-Massicotte-Talbot

HEAD COACH:
Louis Periard, a veteran of three World Cups of Hockey (including, yes, 18) and three World Juniors, has been a controversial figure as a coach. Many feel he was fast tracked into the position because he simply has always been around Hockey Donnacona and was on the famous WCoH 18 team. He has been a competent coach at a few levels up until this point, but seemingly gets promoted mostly on name recognition. He does prioritise technical hockey and skating the puck into the zone rather than dumping and chasing, and he can sometimes keep a short leash for players who make silly mistakes.

World Juniors And A Broken Nation

There are only so many reasons you'd see a proliferation of flags in a city like Marianopolis, and the most likely of all aside from the 22nd of April is an international hockey tournament. In neighbourhoods all across the economic spectrum, there are flags hanging out windows and on proper flag poles, as fans prepare to get wrapped up in the 14th World Junior Hockey Championship. The old joke is that hockey is not a religion in Marianne, it's much bigger than that, and that joke has an uneasy new tone as it resurfaces on social media and in conversations at bars again with the additional backdrop of the first presidential election post-agglomeration.

You see, hockey is something bigger than a religion in Marianne, but Donnacona is of course not just Marianne, and whilst the sport previously had a small but non-zero following in Agosto and Hudson Islands, it does not create the same zeal. In fact, the most popular sport in three of the four new provinces is basketball, a sport that is undeniably more accessible to young athletes from lower status households, and which has slightly more clout across the multiverse. For younger generations, it already has begun to grab a foothold in the former Marianne, as it can be played year round at outdoor courts and indoor facilities that do not require the level of maintenance. In an urban nation like most of Donnacona, one must rely on municipal facilities or ponds that require transport out of the city to play hockey, and whilst generations of kids have done so (and continue to do so), the siren call of a game that can happen any time has gotten more and more powerful.

Image

And so, the sentiment that hockey is more than a religion in Marianne now has an added symbolism...it's more than a religion in Marianne. Marianne has always prided itself on openness and the sanitised public face of our country- open borders, refugee resettlement, a healthy social welfare system, has always brushed up against an uneasy mild chauvinism towards the pure laine Mariannois, or at least those who identify that as something aspirational- often the argument these chauvinists use to suggest they are not is an enthusiasm for the Mytanar or Valhallan immigrant who waves the flag, follows hockey, likes our food- essentially that we love these immigrants so long as they "speak white" as the poem goes. Moreso than almost anything else, hockey has been a stand-in for this part of our culture, a get rich quick scheme to become "one of us". After all, the O'Bagels family are clearly not pure laine, although at this point only the hardest Mariannois separatist would aruge they are not in spirit.

In the middle of the World Juniors, voters from across the country will head to the polls to vote in their party political primaries, and across the spectrum the main topic is Loi 26, which would trigger an official request to enter the Common Rushmori Community, which has been the cause of fervent debate in bars and on television. Many of the stipulations for entry into the CRC are less intense than rules regarding immigration in Donnacona to begin with, which makes some voters feel as though entry into the community is unnecessary. Others are also still anxious about entry because of the perceived slight of the larger Rushmori political body after the "Night of the Long Lymans", which ended with the ouster of Karine Lessard as Rushmori delegate to the World Assembly.

Image

As if that is not even more fraught, the front-runner for the Parti travailliste nomination (and thus the front-runner to become first President of unified Donnacona) is Priya Chaudhury, a deputy from Botley in Hudson Islands. A muslim, a woman and a Hudsonian, Chaudhury knows first hand the Mariannois chauvinism that can exist but is proud of her party and her nation and feels as though it can rise above. A savvy politician, Chaudhury recorded a special message for the World Junior team at her campaign stop in Limoilou, telling them that she was so proud of the way they represent Donnacona and Rushmore and that she'd be watching them closely.

But where Chaudhury represents the new Donnacona, the World Junior team very plainly looks like old Marianne. Only Stefano Russo (from Monterme, Agosto) is from outside of Marianne, and only Kazimir Massicotte (whose mother is Wiguese [aboriginal]) is a visible minority. They say that everything is political and if you think something is apolitical, that means you agree with the politics inherent. Users on the Jasr social networking services have taken to pointing this out- "I love hockey, but it's a bad look to send out a team so white to represent Donnacona right now." said prominent hockey blogger Guylaine Drainville. She added later- "There is absolutely nothing wrong with being proud of this team, who represents a lot of what's good in our country, but it's ridiculous to think they represent ALL of us." Le Hockey du samedi soir commentator Jean-Marie Cerise, a controversial figure, went on Jasr to decry this point of view. "I tell you, people are too sensitive these days. This team wears the apple PROUDLY and if you think anything else matters then you are too sensitive. We kept the apple when we merged, I'd like to see some of these people wear it a little more often." These comments set off a firestorm of their own, and Sport+ has temporarily suspended Cerise whilst they evaluate his future.

In St. Jakob's Heinrich Vogel square, Donnaconans questioned about the greater meaning of the World Junior team had views more aligned with Cerise, although few seemed to care much either way. They were on holiday and they were going to see the hockey team they loved beat Austrakia, and in the words of one such reveler "Politics can wait until I get home."

The players chafed at the instructions passed down by Sarzonian Under 20 national ice hockey coach Martin Pelleur.

No leaving the hotel grounds unless on a team outing. No trips to the local bars. Not even a trip to the local library. Each player must shelter in place until everyone associated with the team underwent tests for the SARS 2 novel Coronavirus. If anyone tested positive, they would have to be isolated entirely.

In top of that, strict cleaning, handwashing, and social distancing protocols would be enforced. No hugs. No handshakes. Waves and elbow bumps were as much physical contact as would be permitted off the ice.

"Coach, this is madness!" Brett Tanguay, Jr. said. "Nobody here's been diagnosed with it and no one's gonna be diagnosed with it."

"No one on the team or on staff has been tested yet," team doctor Clayre Bennett said. "We need to err on the side of caution until the curve flattens or until a vaccine gets developed. Tanguay was aware of the look on his father's face and squelched his desire to blurt out, "if I get it, I get it." He didn't know Sarzonia baseball assistant traveling secretary Todd Meyers well, but he knew Todd well enough to know how much difficulty he had with SARS 2.

After the meeting about the restrictions continued for another hour, Pelleur pointed out projections from Northwest Kalactin that projected this inexperienced, untested Junior Stars team as a favourite.

"They're having a laugh!" starting goalie Owen Franks said between laughs. "They really think we're a favourite?"

"They're probably doing that to get us to let down our guard and take them more lightly," defencewoman Ashleigh Whitfield said. "We can't believe our press clippings. We gotta play our game and be disciplined."

Pelleur stopped short. Whitfield took the words right out of his mouth. She was warning the team about lack of communication between the blue lines and emphasized the importance of finishing checks and giving Franks a clear look at the puck when opponents had possession in the Sarzonian end of the ice.

She's really like a coach on the ice, isn't she?" Pelleur whispered to Brett Senior.

"Yes she is," the elder Tanguay said. "I think she should be the team captain," he said, remembering that his son declined the offer of the captain's C on his sweater. He offered to wear an A for alternate captain, but he didn't want the added pressure of being captain. Besides, Ashleigh earned the respect of the team as a hard nosed defender.

The preparations would continue, both for the escape actually playing hockey would provide and for the testing to find out if anyone affiliated with Junior Stars hockey had the SARS 2 novel Coronavirus.

“Hello everyone we are back here on Sporting News Kalactin and we have more news regarding the world junior hockey championships including some interviews with some of the members of this years team.”

“Yep, we are very excited today to have with us John Moore, Jason Griffin and Craig Johnson some of the youngest but best players from this years team.”

“So John how do you think that this years team can win the WJHC championship.”

“Well, I think that this years team has some great offensive power that we can use to blowout the other teams on offense. Also I think that we have great goalies this year like Jason to really help the team out on defense.”

“Are any of you scared by this matchup with the Sarzonian Junior Stars?”

The cocky 17 year old Craig responded with “not at all we will easily take care of these guys we will destroy them I expect them to finish last in the group.”

“Well that’s a bold statement, some experts have said that the Sarzonian team might be one of the stronger ones this year.”

“Yeah but when you look at them on the inside they are a very weak team, our offense will be blasting through their defense and their offense will get destroyed by our guys.”

“Do you expect there to be any bad blood between the 2 teams?”

“Yeah especially if those guys see this news interview although it won’t end up mattering in the end, now won’t it”

“Um okay, what other teams do you think could preform well during this tournament, do you have any sleeper picks?”

“Well I like the hosts their team looks strong this year and then obviously us.”

“You say that the Kalactanians will win?”

“Yeah we can win if we go out there and play our hardest.”

“Who do you think the strongest players in the Kalactanian team are this year?”

“Well myself and also Scott Morris the kid can really skate. Also both John and Jason are very good players in their own right and also Eugene Henderson has some great puck skills.”

“Do you think that the age of this team poses any issues that could affect the outcome of this tournament?”

“Well I think as much as having younger teams can hurt you, they can also help you out a lot our team despite being very young, are some of the best skaters in the tournament this year.”

“What about the size, this Kalactanian team could very well be the smallest team in the tournament this year?”

“Well like I said earlier the Kalactanian team has some very fast skaters although you sometimes have to compromise size for speed and that’s what happened with this team.”

“How about some non-WJHC topics, what do you think about a possible junior hockey league for the NKHL to draw players out of?”

“Well I think it could really help the league it starts getting harder and harder to draw kids out of the Major AAA teams to come and play in the NKHL when they can go on and get a scholarship at a college for 4 years. The only 2 problems are that the league is running out of money and initiative 1435 prevents kids from being payed for playing sports until they are 18. I think if the league could get back on their feet and the initiative was repealed the league would be able to start a major junior league but until then we will have to keep going through AAA teas and colleges.”

“Okay then that wraps it up for today on Sporting News Kalactin”

TROLLEBORG NATIONAL TEAM

Hello, this is Goool magazine!
Today we present to your attention the line-up of our U20 hockey team with our comments.

Head Coach
Let's start with the head coach. As many of you know, the difficult question of who to appoint as head coach was resolved in the already traditional form - by the vote of coaches, functionaries and fans. To the surprise of many, this post was given to 45-year-old Morten Gould, who trained our national team at the world championship so unfortunate for us. This decision surprised many, but at least he is the only coach who has at least some experience in international competitions. According to the decision of the hockey federation, five coaches also entered the coaching staff at once, clearly with the goal of helping them see themselves how the big hockey world live and work

Line-up
After the formation of HQ, the coachesmanaged to hold two gathering, equvalent to the traditional pre-season tests with the aim of selecting candidates, more than 100 young hockey players were called up for the first, including four just from the street, without special sports training, discovered by scouts while watching amateur games on skating rinks. After the second gathering, the main backbone of the team was formed. The number of hockey players in the team, enough for a full four lines of both defenders and forwards, is noteworthy. Apparently, the coaching staff decided to use the maximum number of young players..

Goalkeepers
Fintan Baak (19)
Mao Rens (18)
Adrian Hautkoper (19)

Of the three goalkeepers, only the surname of the first says something to ordinary hockey fans, since he is always either on the field or on the bench as part of his team, and recall that he has a 93.2% shot deflection ratio. The other two are familiar to those who attend the Trolleborg youth championship matches, and they have more than decent indicators for their age. Our experts, however, are questioned the fact that all three goalkeepers play in the same style.

Defenders:
Timon Boot (18)
Joris Wubbe (19)
Jacob Bomer (18)
Tobias Hudmaker (19)
Yisbrand Arbe (18)
Kless Flip (19)
Fergum Pwill (18)
Balder Loekk (18)

The defensive line looks balanced, the coaches have a choice of players focused on creation or destruction, both large and small stature, fast and not very. Everyone played at least once in the Trolleborg League, and Boot and Wubbe already putting themselves in the main teams of their clubs.

Forwards:
Robban Kuul(18)
Kees Severin(18)
Brage Hendrix(17)
Rossem Wouter(18)
Godfried Finn(17)
Conlla Anker(18)
Hein Willigen(17)
Servas Chern(19)
Bert Bemer(18)
Barend Houtem(18)
Shoorel Rijnders(19)
Piit Althous(18)
Martinus Ritweld(18)
Willem Reinhard(18)
Muno Braam(18)

Of the forwards selected by the coaching staff, a little more than half played in the main league, the remaining notable in the youth championship. Rossem Wouter managed to become the top scorer of the youth championship and at the same time get medals of the adult championship, regularly playing for his club. It's worth noting that in the attacking link there is a also a variety of players, with almost every style represented.

To the surprise of everyone, the head coach said that he was not going to use fixed lines at this championship, but intended to shuffle the squad, approach the selection of players flexibly and use combinations of players that were most suitable for the situation on the field, focusing on their talents and physical conditions, but our experts suggested that the line-up would look like this:

Timon Boot - Tobias Hudmaker
Joris Wubbe - Yisbrand Arbe
Kless Flip - Jacob Bomer
Fergum Pwill - Balder Loekk

Robban Kuul- Bert Bemer- Barend Houtem
Godfried Finn- Hein Willigen- Rossem Wouter
Kees Severin- Shoorel Rijnders-Brage Hendrix
Conlla Anker- Servas Chern- Piit Althous
Martinus Ritweld-Willem Reinhard-Muno Braam

If my opponent RPs first, they may:
Choose my scorers: Yes
Godmod scoring events: No
Assign penalties to my players: Yes, except fighting penalties.
RP fights: Only with prior coordination
RP injuries: Yes but I will determine severity

Hockey Time,
by Madison Gagnon, Coach

I am honored to have been named head coach of the Cassadagan World Junior Hockey team, and am grateful that this competition exists in the first place. When the tournament was announced, our participated was declared quite quickly, and overall there are 24 nations that are taking part. Initially, it seemed as though the hosts would have been happy with sixteen signups, so in that regard this is already successful. In the end, what will determine success is the quality of hockey on the ice. For our team, wins and losses are obviously the most important. There can be as few as three games, so one must make the most of their opportunities.

I would hope that there is excitement for this competition within Cassadaigua as we are fresh off of our title run in the World Cup of Hockey. A tournament like this is where it all can start. It is an under-20 competition, so we have a mix of players who are already in the Cassadagan Hockey League and those who still have not been draft eligible. I have tried to create a balance with this team in regards to their age. It is not as simple as taking the best players in the country, you have to pick players that compliment one another. If you take the twelve best forwards in the country, in terms of goalscoring, you are going to have a team that might be real strong in one aspect of the game, but suffers in other aspects. You have to compose the roster like you would a hockey team, as there are many roles that you want from players on the ice. Then, you figure out the best players for the role, but even there you have to do even more. You want to have size on each line, you need to match up right handed shots and left handed shots, especially on the back end so you can have an effective system of cycling on the power play. The final cuts on the eventual roster were the hardest. Then, once you have named the players, you have to decide who will be scratched and who will play. That, too, is tough. When you have just three games before the playoffs, you have to make the right decision. One loss can keep you from advancing in this type of group stage.

We have mostly female players on this team, but I am proud to say we have included a handful of male players, too. Hockey is the sport that had the greatest influence in Cassadaigua early on in gender equality, and that is continuing in this day and age. They are here because they belong here, not because there was any quota that was assigned to me. Trust me, if there was going to be such a quota, I would not have accepted this job.

I hope you all enjoy this competition!

Greetings, this is TTV from the streets of Stelburg!

A visit to the Youth World Cup in Siovanija and Teusland last season was the first ever trip of our athletes to the competition abroad and was the first trip of our fans in which they began to earn a reputation. Not much time has passed since then, but, I must say, unlike the athletes themselves, who have not yet shown themselves so well in the fields and halls, our fans have already made a big name for themselves in a short time. Our people make many friends in both parts of Siovanija and Teusland, and, therefore, in addition to hockey fans, a good bit of football ones arrived, not only to support the athletes of our country, but also to meet old friends from the city.

Image

Undoubtedly, restaurant owners in the Stelburg, which was well-known for our fans, today have a lot of work to do, i.e. counting the money flowing into the coffers due to the heavy influx of fans from Trolleborg. As always, after serious partiying in the city center, our fans built a traditional “green river” with a mass of people from the main square to the stadium, complete with live band music, horns, drums and chants, and this time many people had with them not just put shreds with the colors of the city flag, but full-fledged scarves with the symbols of Trolleborg, hosts and the championship.

Team arrive day before after traditional tour around the country to accustom young people with a foreign countries. Only two of the players ever going behind the borders before, and Hockey Association gladly put many efforts to add something to the minds of youngsters.

In the first game our opponents will be a team of Neu Engollon, one of the most formidable nations of the hockey world. Trolleborg players is already on the ice, making warm up, let's hope that responsibility will not put serious pressure on our lads

Image

Our team will then play Savojarna and Xanneria. It will be seen, how our youngsters will fare where first team fail.

RW Cedric Caldwell, 18, St. Stephen's University - top high school prospect last year is the closest thing this team has to a sniper, incredibly fast with a good body
C Tony Abbott, 19, Cape Breton University - Abbott's a phenom in passing, checking, defending, awareness, and smarts, but as a shooter, he leaves something to be desired, the leader of the club
LW Joseph Robinson, 19, Memorial University - Robinson's a burly, aggressive player, expect him to mix it up a little, good shooter

2nd Line
RW Jacques Laflamme, 19, Memorial University - Laflamme often leaves opponents gasping for breath with his speed, unlikely to be hit, always finding a hole in the opponent's defense
C Christophe Goudard, 19, Universite de Sept-Iles - quick, fast, good skater and passer, will distribute to his two wings
LW Leif Knudsen, 20, St. Stephen's University - Norwegian immigrant skates like the wind and shoots well

3rd Line
RW Stephen Lawson, 20, University of Rutupiae – Lawson has a steely determination about him, better than average shooter who can also lay a lick
C Ian Holmes, 20, New Brunswick University - this line is the toughest line, mostly because Holmes is everywhere on the ice fighting for every bit of possession he can, almost like a third d-man, but he's no slouch on offense
LW Ryan Mason, 20, St. Stephen's University - Mason's not afraid to check and check hard, better than average defender for a wing, likes assists

4th Line
RW Clement Freitas, 18, St. Francis Xavier - Freitas is a bit of a wild man, but his upside knows no bounds, could be a great goalscorer
C Pascal Clevenger, 18, St. Stephen's University - Clevenger is supposed to keep his two wild and woolly wings under control, Benson thinks he could be future top-line guy
LW Armand Calderon, 18, Universite de Sept-Iles - an unparalleled athlete, but needs to work on his technical game, prone to fighting more than you'd expect

Pair 1
Jesse Erickson, 20, University of Reginorum - Erickson is a big body who is good at all types of checks, disciplined and heads-up at all times
Philippe Marchand, 19, Universite de Moncton - Marchand is lithe and cat-quick by defensemen standards, excellent awareness, shot-blocking and checking abilities

Pair 2
Cam Ferguson, 20, Dalhousie University - Ferguson is a high-motor player who will fiercely protect his teammates and clear people out from in front of the goal, but also has good blocking and passing abilities, kind of an enforcer-plus
Brendan Bryan, 20, St. Stephen's University - Bryan is a converted forward who is playing well as a two-way defender, more likely to be known for offensive highlights than defensive ones

Pair 3
Doug Warren, 19, University of King's College - Warren and LaMarche are two of a kind, big hitters and shot-blockers, but not likely to contribute much on the offensive end
Guy LaMarche, 19, Universite de Sept Iles - LaMarche likes to wind up and shoot when he gets the chance, but he's much better off sticking to hitting and defense

Goaltenders
Jermaine Roy, 20, Universite de Sept-Iles - played for national second-place team, a brick wall in net, but can be beaten if you screen him
Tim Riley, 19, St. Thomas University - Riley was the main reason little St. Thomas made the playoffs, preternaturally athletic but still learning
