Is religion a necessity for society?

A religion of some kind usually always pervades in our behaviour. Most of us are fairly superstitious and most of us seem to become outraged if any of the accepted orthodoxies of the age are challenged. Progressives often treat their own ideology like a religion -with the way they behave they'd probably burn you if they could.

Nah, we tend not to be fans of the death penalty.

Not in policy, but I see plenty of that ilk saying that 'so and so ought to be killed/punched/etc for saying/believing X'.

I mean, I see a lot of people saying we should punch Nazis, which... we kinda had a whole war where killing Nazis was a major goal, and that's peanuts compared to what they'd do were they to rise to power again, so...

That's not really germane. And also what constitutes a 'Nazi' or a fascist is pretty loose on your side, hence where the religion aspect comes in. The anger directed towards anyone not 'progressive' is basically a form of 'burn the heretic', even if only metaphorically.
