DRAWKLAND'S WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC 48

Finally, after many cycles of disappointment and failure by Drawland's Base Corps, the Drawkian International Sporting Council (DISC) has deemed it's the right time to host the most storied tournament in international baseball history: The World Baseball Classic! The 48th edition will feature 48 brave and skilled nations duking it out on the diamond, for the right to call themselves champion. Will one of the several WBC dynasties capture a seventh title, or will a fledgling nation break through and claim all the glory for themselves? Only time will tell. Welcome ... to World Baseball Classic 48!

FORMAT

With 48 nations competing in this edition, we will be rolling with an 8 groups of 6 format. Every nation will play every other nation in a three-game series, both home and away, against every other nation in their group. This will amount to 30 total games, across 10 series. For every cutoff, a single three-game series will be scorinated, for a total of 10 scorination days in the group stage.

16 teams will qualify for the playoffs. Each group will send its top 2 teams to the playoffs, with the group winners being seeded 1-8 by record, and the group runners-up being seeded 9-16 by record. The tiebreakers are Wins, H2H Record, Overall Run Differential, H2H Run Differential, and if push comes to shove, a Tiebreaker Game.

Every round of the playoffs, except for the Championship, will be Best-of-5 series. The Championship will be Best-of-7. A Third-Place Series will be held concurrently with the Championship Series (besides the fact that it's Best-of-5 and not 7). For the playoffs, 2 games will be scorinated per cutoff (in the interest of time). Game 5 of any series (and beyond, if the Championship Series needs them) will be only one match per scorination cutoff. See the intended schedule below for a clearer picture.

SCHEDULE

With the World Cup and other events looming, I'd like to get through this with a little delay as possible (especially considering how it took a week longer than I wanted to get this thread posted). I'll be shooting for cutoffs every day with few breaks. Despite this, if all playoff series in a round conclude without needing a Game 5, that day will simply become a break day, as to keep the schedule from drifting.

Cutoff Window: 10pm-11pm, Eastern Daylight Time.
My cutoffs will likely be towards the back end of this window, but they will never be before 10pm.

NEW TO THE WBC?

First of all, welcome! If you haven't done any sports roleplaying with us before, please give THIS THREAD a read if you haven't already. Maybe you have participated in tournaments in the past and don't remember exactly what to do, or maybe you've signed up but never posted anything because you didn't know what to post ... and maybe this is your first experience and you're really in the dark! Either way, here's the basic information (assuming you've already read the thread linked above):

To get started, you're gonna want to post a roster. Even if you don't post anything else on the thread, posting a roster will at least help your fellow groupmates make more realistic RPs, as well as get your feet wet so that if you do have the time or inspiration to RP, you have a solid starting point. It can be as simple as just listing your players and their positions in plain text, or you could go overboard and make fancy colorful graphics. Do whatever you're comfortable with, and feel free to look at your fellow participants' rosters for inspiration (just don't steal directly from them - that's obviously bad form)! Once again, I highly suggest that you post a roster, even if you don't plan on participating any further. It goes a long way and it does count towards your bonus in the scorinator.

Now, if you don't really know what baseball is about, try looking at the Wiki article on baseball, so you have some idea of the basics. If you're confused on how to build a roster, try the Wiki article on baseball positions, or look to any rosters that have already been posted. You can even ask your fellow participants (or me

) by TG or Discord - there's no shame in asking for help! Again, your roster doesn't need to be fancy, just needs to have the barebones of players and their positions, so that your fellow nations can RP with it. Of course, if you want to add more information (numbers, age, their home team, handedness, height, weight, etc.), you're perfectly welcome and encouraged to do that. Just do whatever you can manage.

If you're going to post a roster, it's highly encouraged you include an RP Permissions Box. On NS Sports, it's generally accepted that the first nation's RP about a game is the "official" version of those events. If your opponent has already RP'd the match against you and you want to RP about it, you have to roughly conform to what they already wrote (there is some leeway, of course, but that's where this comes in). The RP Permissions box helps other RP'ers know what they can and can't do with your players and team if they RP first. If you have a really specific vision for how you want your team to play, you might want to restrict one or more of these. If you don't care at all what happens, you could just say "Yes" to all of these, or even just put a blanket statement saying you give your opponents full permissions. Copy this text here:

Here's a short description of all these permissions:
Choose Runscorers: This allows your opponent to look at your roster and decide which players scored the runs in the game. Almost everyone grants this because it's hard to RP fully without it.
Choose Lineup: This allows your opponent to choose the order that your players bat in. If you already have a specific lineup specified in your roster, your opponent will probably use that, but it doesn't hurt to specify here.
Follow Pitching Rotation: If you have a pitching rotation on your roster, this allows your opponent to follow the rotation and assume which of your pitchers started in which games. This basically allows your opponent to specify your pitcher without having to ask you first.
Godmod Scoring Events: This allows your opponent to make unrealistic things happen leading to scores. These can range from statistically improbable stuff, like 5 straight batters hitting a homerun, or straight up impossible, like a dragon swooping into the stadium and stealing the ball so the batter can score. If you are strictly realist with your RP, you should say "No" to this permission.
RP Injuries: This lets your opponent RP realistic injuries to your players without having to consult you first. If you don't want that, you could also specify that they can as long as they ask you first.
Godmod Injuries: This is the same as above except the injuries could be more unrealistic, like career ending injuries or deaths.
Eject Players: This allows your opponent to eject your players in their RP if the situation arises.
Godmod Events: Same as the other godmod permissions, except this covers any other events that don't involve scoring or injuries.
Use DH at Home: The Designated Hitter is a unique position in baseball. This permission tells your opponent whether or not your team uses a DH normally (the home team always decides whether or not a designated hitter is used in the game based on their preference).
Style Modifier: This is a number ranging from -5 to +5. Simply put, it's a measure on how aggressive your team is. In some sports (not baseball), this number is put into the scorinator and can affect scores, but here it's simply an easy way to show your opponents how your team operates. Does your team play balls-out, swinging for the fences every at-bat? You'll likely be a positive style mod. Do your players prefer to grind out a low-scoring win, sitting back until the time is perfect to strike? You're more of a negative mod team. If you're a balanced team or don't care, you can always go with 0.

Once you have your roster posted, you're free to RP about whatever you want! Most people like to RP about how their teams perform, giving match reports every day or so about the games that were recently scorinated. You don't have to do this, but it's a good starting point. Some players have posted freeform stories unrelated to the tournament, if that's more your style, or given news about other events in their nations not necessarily relating to sports or the exact games in this tournament. In any case, you can RP about whatever you want! Just be sure if you write RPs including other nation's teams that you check their roster and RP Permissions. Drawkland - Sonnel

WELCOME to DRAWKLAND

Intro
Welcome all WBC playoff competitors to the shores of Drawkland for the first time! For those that aren't aware, Drawkland is the largest and most prominent nation on the planet/region of Sonnel. While several nations throughout Sonnel, especially Juvencus, are active in sports both domestic and abroad, Drawkland is undoubtedly the nation with the widest number of competitors and fans. As fans traveling from other nations to watch their teams compete, you will find that your experience in Drawkland will likely be pleasant and well-accommodated. Drawkians are very proud of their nation and always try to go the extra mile to make sure visitors and tourists have a great experience. What better way to prove Drawkland is the greatest Sonnelian nation?

Travel
None of the playoff nations in this WBC are located on Sonnel. Fortunately, Drawkland has many transportation services which travel to regions far and wide throughout the multiverse. No matter where you're located, you're never more than a spaceship or portal plane ride away. If these don't jive with your tech levels, feel free to ignore all this and just travel in normal planes here. I certainly don't mind.
When in Drawkland, your best bet within any of the host cities are the well-adjusted bus and light rail systems, as well as the subways and ridesharing systems throughout. Between cities, your best bet is airline travel or long-distance trains or airships. Low-orbit flights are much quicker, but also much more expensive. Although if you have the time, renting a car and taking a road trip between the cities would be a great way to experience the vast natural and man-made beauty Drawkland has to offer in that section of the nation.

Weather
While most of the host cities are hundreds, if not thousands of miles apart, they are along approximately the same latitude, meaning their temperatures and climates are relatively similar. Since this WBC playoffs will be held in the spring, all cities will be pretty temperate, with rain easily a possibility. All of the cities are solidly inland, so the climate should be quite predictable. For Drawk City, Metropolon, Pittsennat, Chelstio, and Raikennax, if it's not raining, it'll likely be partly cloudy. Cemmendy is at the edge of a large desert, so rain is much less likely, and the sky should be pretty barren.

Cuisine
Drawkian cuisine is pretty consistent throughout the nation. As a whole, the Drawkian palette is heavily focused on carbs, dairy, and savory proteins. Food one would describe as American pub style, Italian, or Mexican are the most common in Drawkland (although they weren't influenced from those particular sources, obviously). Raikennax, being inland and part of the greater Callagardet sector, has a larger emphasis on the grains and field-grown foods. Cemmendy lies on a large river that flows to the major port in Ducentu, so there is a hint of seafood in their local foods. The rest of the cities are large and you're likely to find any sort of cuisine you'd desire, but there's not much of a big local flair.

Hosting
In all cities, all the games for a particular playoff matchup will be held in the same stadium. Every stadium is a ballpark used in Drawkland's professional league, so they should be up to standards, if not slightly bigger yards. Make sure to check your group's specific stadium and city for more information. Please note that while these stadiums have massive capacities that may be overwhelming for some nations, these seating numbers are relatively normal for Drawkian standards. Most of these cities are large, with storied sporting histories, so some of their capacities are big even by Drawkian baseball standards.

Since Drawkians are bigger than the average human, most Drawkian ballparks have wall dimensions that are bigger than what most human players will be used to, both in height and distance to the plate. Because of this, every ballpark will be utilizing temporary walls set in the deep outfield that are of more standard fare. The spare space will likely be filled with temporary bleachers or grandstands. The only exception is in playoff matches contested against Drawkland's national team (if there are any). These will use the ballpark's regular dimensions with no temporary walls.

SEVEN STARS STADIUM

Hosting: World Baseball Classic 48 Championship Series, Round of 16 series
With Drawkland finally hosting another major tournament, we couldn't pass up another opportunity for Seven Stars Stadium to host a championship match (or in this case, matches)! Built during World Cup 79 specifically to host the Final match, Seven Stars Stadium is one component of a much larger Centivar County Complex. Seven Stars Stadium is a massive and beautifully constructed indoor arena with the highest level of arcane arts and modern technology combined in its construction. An indoor arena with a retractable vaulted roof, Seven Stars holds a massive 250k fans within it, combining several decks of seating as well as massive multi-level columns for additional seating and luxury boxes. The surface is a combined turf/natural grass to mix the advantages of both. Nano technology allows it to be colored via electronic controls, making switching between sports easy at the press of a button.

For baseball, the seating arrangements and field dimensions are obviously modified. The highest-quality infield dirt is stored in-house for this very occasion ... so while the outfield is the hybrid turf, the infield will be completely natural and pristine. The outfield walls are normally 15 feet (standard for many Drawkian fields). The walls themselves are in an angular but symmetrical formation, with center field being 425 feet from the plate, and both poles being 350 feet. Again, in the event the matches are non-Drawkian, this size may be reduced.

So far, Seven Stars Stadium has held only several matches at the international level: all soccer championship (World Cup 79, IAC 7, 7 Nations Cup). Since then, it has hosted several Drawkian domestic championships in various sports as well. This will be its first time hosting baseball at an international level, adding a new duo of nations to those who have the honor of playing in one of the most iconic stadia of the NationStates multiverse.

WELCOME to DRAWK CITY

History
Drawk City is certainly one of the older cities in Drawkland, but it's more recent than most of the other hosting cities. Rather than many Drawkian metropolises, Drawk City did not date back to one of the kingdoms of old. It was planned and built about a century after the founding of the nation, commissioned by the immortal ruler of Drawkland, Iarocav. It was originally built to be the capital of the new nation, a city that was new and unbiased to any old regimes or treaties. When Metropolon was built many centuries later, it took over the capital mantle, but Drawk City remained as the most populous city and the unofficial cultural capital of the nation.
For many centuries, Drawk City has been the heart of the nation. It was built on the banks of a wide, sweeping river in the forests of Iarocav's territory, and quickly expanded once many government functions were moved there. From then on, many citizens from across the continent flooded there to start a new life in the new city. The flooding nearly never stopped, and nowadays, it's home to over 25 million people in its greater area. You could spend months in Drawk City and still not see everything worthwhile there is to see. Fortunately, fans know what they're here to see, and there's plenty of major attractions to visit in the meantime.

Sports
One of the biggest elements of Drawkland's culture is its sporting spirit and love of competition. With Drawk City being the cultural capital of the nation, it's not an unfair assumption to believe that Drawk City's sports teams are among the best in the country. You'd be pretty much right. Most of Drawk City's professional sides are dynasties that have been in the mix for many years, and baseball is no exception. The Drawk City Scouts and the Drawk Corps' baseball squad are the main contenders, and their stadia will play host to several WBC series.

Tourism
As aforementioned, there is so much to do in Drawk City you could probably never write it all down. We'd say the best attractions are the many museums, which cover pretty much every topic you could imagine. I'd personally suggest the Royal Drawk Museum, which is filled with stories and artifacts from Drawkland's almost mythical past. One could visit the many skyscrapers and monuments in the busy and massive downtown, or just take the time to visit the park closest to your hotel (there's a lot). No matter what kind of tourism you enjoy, you'll probably be able to enjoy it here. Unless you like the beach. Then you're hosed.
For a quick and easy day trip you could visit any of the nearby old Drawkian cities, like Sadeg or Hellenmack. You could even visit the nearby Metropolon (scope out you rivals maybe?) for a host of other big Drawkian landmarks. Multiple-day trips could take you further inland, to perhaps visit the vast mountains and forests that are hallmarks of the northern end of the territory. You'll definitely have more than enough things to do in Drawk City, though, so we doubt you'll need to find your way out of town.

HYDROGEN CYANIDE FIELD

Hosting: Third Place Series, Round of 16 series
While many Drawkian stadia are known to be massive cathedrals of competition, especially in the sport-crazed center of the nation, the Drawk City Scouts' stadium is actually a bit small compared to some of the other big market teams. The name is a little unorthodox, especially for a stadium of its caliber, but it's held dear by many Scouts fans. The naming rights were bought by a young mogul in Drawk City, and he opted to name the stadium after a reference to a classic moment from Scouts history, dubbed "the Hydrogen Cyanide Incident". I won't elaborate further. This stadium is also the home stadium of the Base Corps, Drawkland's national team.

Being in the center of town, there is no shortage of hotels and public transportation to make life easy for those commuting to and from the park. It is a bit far from the nearest airport, which is more on the outskirts away from the downtown area, so travelling there from outside the city may be a pain. However, the extensive under- and above-ground public transport will surely suffice to bring you to where you need to go.

CORPS CENTRAL PARK
Drawk City, Drawkland | Capacity: 89,000 | Drawk Corps
Hosting: Semifinal Series, Round of 16 Series
Corps Central Pitch is apart of the larger Corps Central Complex, the headquarters of the Drawk Corps' sports venues. The Complex hosts 4 large venues for the 4 major sports in Drawkland, all adjacent to one another laid out in a 4-pointed manner. In the center is a large skyscraper that servers as the Corps' main HQ. The ground levels of the building are recreational and retail spaces, making this a hub for many Corps members.

"But wait!" I hear you saying, "What the hell is a Corps?! And is this a different team from the Base Corps? What is happening? Ahhhhhhh", to which I tell you to calm down and listen. The concept of the Corps is rather unique to Drawkland. Corps are usually a regional organization, like a club. Most Corps give certain benefits to members, like easy access to jobs within the Corps which relate to particular industries. Many Corps operate universities, and some sports teams as well. The Drawk Corps is the biggest one, with a nationwide reach.

The Corps Central Complex is more on the outskirts of Drawk City. Luckily for fans, it's way closer to the main airport, so it'll be way quicker to get there. Unfortunately, it'll be a while away from the downtown attractions, but if you're interested in the Corps life, you could perhaps see what it's all about. You could even become a member! Though you probably wouldn't be able to reap the bigger benefits from your home nation.

WELCOME to METROPOLON

History
Metropolon has been Drawkland's capital for many years, but it's the youngest of Drawkland's many large cities. Drawk City was planned by Iarocav to be the capital way back in the days of yore, and it remained that way for centuries. But after the advent of what many consider to be modern technology and beyond, Iarocav began planning a new city, perfectly circular, gridded, and symmetrical, to be built on an artificial island in a lake. This plan turned into the city of Metropolon, which would serve as Drawkland's capital from that point forward. The city's outskirts are made up of low buildings, but the height of each building increases gradually as one gets closer and closer to the center of the city. The center of the city is a massive building known as The Pinnapex, the tallest building on Sonnel and one of Drawkland's most iconic structures.
While Metropolon never had the benefit of being a years-old city with lots of history and identity, its population quickly spiked due to its proximity to other major cities in the Metro District, as well as its new status as the largest seat of power in Sonnel. After several generations of expansion, cementing its place and purpose in the Drawkian culture, it became one of the biggest cities in the nation, supporting around 20 million citizens in present day.

Sports
Metropolon was founded long after sports leagues had cemented their place in Drawkian society. This put them as a disadvantage ... despite having a rapidly ballooning population, it would be harder to bring themselves into the fold. Luckily, after several years of waiting, leagues began to expand, or smaller teams began to fold, and Metropolon's moguls quickly jumped on the opportunity to bring sports to the new capital and fill the brand new sparkling arenas with fans. After over two decades of waiting, Metropolon eventually had a team in each of Drawkland's Big 4 sports - baseball, basketball, soccer, and football (founded in that order). Thanks to the big resources of the rich owners that had made the city their new home, it didn't take long for these fledgling clubs to find success. Metropolon, like other cities in the north, was established as a powerful force in the sporting world.

Tourism
As one could imagine, Metropolon's immaculately planned construction and layout is beautiful for one to behold. You might just want to spend the day traveling through its simple and effective transit system, dodging "underrunners" (the many commuters of the subway system for which Metropolon's gridiron football team is named) during rush hour, or the aboveground monorail system that goes along major thoroughfares. The biggest tourist attraction is undoubtedly The Pinnapex, as people from all around Drawkland and Sonnel come just to see it and visit its many levels of observation decks. You could also visit all of Drawkland's federal government offices, if you're into that sort of thing. The downtown cluster of Metropolon is absolutely loaded with restaurants, hotels, malls, and any other attractions to spend your time. It wasn't just designed to be the perfect city to host the capitol, but also the perfect tourist trap.

CAPITAL PARK
Metropolon, Drawkland | Capacity: 85,000 | Metropolon Engineers
Hosting: Semifinal Series, Round of 16 Series
Metropolon is a symmetric city, arranged in a sort of grid with similar buildings in each quadrant, so the skyline looks similar from every angle. The sports venues are no exception. The "big four" are located near the center of town, right outside "The Cluster", the group of skyscrapers surrounding the Pinnapex. All are large, indoor venues covered in beautiful lights inside and out. Capital Park is home of the Metropolon Engineers, the first professional sports team to begin play in town. Its dome does not retract, though it has a state-of-the-art natural lighting system that ensures it doesn't feel like playing in a big box store. Like some other popular indoor stadiums, the playing surface of Capital Park is entirely turf, except for the areas directly around the bases.

The stadium is in the center of town, so there's a plethora of transportation options and attractions in close proximity to the venue. Its futuristic facade and interior are sure to be a hit with any foreigners visiting Drawkland. The atmosphere during a game is also infectious, especially thanks to the enclosed nature of the stadium. Crowd advantage can play a big factor in any sport, so a nation that can turn the crowd for them in Capital Park may be able to run away with the game.

WELCOME to RAIKENNAX

History
As with most huge cities across Drawkland, Raikennax is an ancient city which traces its roots back to before Drawkland was founded as a nation several thousand years ago. The territory of Callagardet had been a land of mainly nomadic and tribal gatherings, while the settlements of Iarocavet in the north were more permanent and feudal in nature. Raikennax, being in the cradle of both areas, took a mix from both societal structures. In the foothills of Valsum, the massive volcano in Drawkland's center, Raikennax was established as a castle stronghold in the style of the north. However, the people there still took a nomadic lifestyle. This was the place where the southernmost of the northern kingdoms could come and trade with the southern and western tribes, without too much difficulty for both.
Raikennax, being in such a central and strategic location for multiple territories, played a major role in the Great Kingdom War that eventually led to Drawkland being founded as a unified nation. Because of its status as a trading hub that surpassed cultural barriers, as well as being in a central location, Raikennax grew quickly as a city. Eventually it became one of the largest cities south of the Metro District (which is famous for harboring several huge cities), and stands today as one of the most culturally important Drawkian towns.

Sports
Raikennax's status as a major city obviously led to it quickly becoming a sports hub. As the Iarocavetian cities up north quickly took to professional sports as they came, Raikennax was one of the first cities south of that territory to take up professional sports. This turned out to be a great move, as their various teams enjoyed a great deal of success, being able to draw from a larger southern recruiting base since most other cities in those regions had not yet organized teams. This early dominance stayed with the city for years, and stands even to this day.
The home team for Raikennax is the Eruptors. While they don't share the domination of their gridiron and association football brothers in the Stallions and the Charge, they're far from a middling side in Drawkland's league.

Tourism
When not watching some of the high quality WBC playoff baseball, visitors have a smorgasbord of attractions in the area to choose from. The aforementioned historical city, with the immaculately-kept original castle walls and interior, is definitely at the top of the list for any tourists. Of course, the looming silhouette of the mountain Valsum can be seen on the eastern horizon, and any outdoorsy and adventurous visitors could take a day trip out to hike the various foothills and mountains, or take a guided tour through Valsum national park.
Raikennax is also home to a lively downtown scene, as well as a great deal of parks and green spaces scattered throughout town. Those willing to take longer day trips could consider nearby towns, such as Esmereldane and Ifferdam Station (known for being huge shipping hubs for the regional agriculture systems), or more rural destinations. The metropolises of the Metro District may be a little out of reach for a day's trip ... but if your team makes the final you'll have to travel up there anyway!

VALSUM HILLS BALLPARK

Valsum Hills Ballpark is the home of the Eruptors. As said earlier, the volcano Valsum is within view of the outskirts of Raikennax. The rocky hills and small mountains that make up the volcano's foothills are one of the biggest geographical features of Raikennax's eastern region, and this is where the ballpark is located. It's a bit older compared to its professional venue counterparts across town, but it's by no means shoddy. It's located at the top of one of the smaller foothills, with the center field opening eastward, so on clear days one can see Valsum looming, far on the horizon. It's certainly a sight to see, and we're sure foreign fans will get a kick out of it.

We know players will enjoy the well-kept playing surface, and fans the freshly-renovated seating. Located on the east side of town on a foothill, you can see its sister stadium in Castle Stadium just a couple miles away, closer to town and more north. The elevated position makes it easy to spot from afar, and gives fans on the balconies beautiful views of the city. It's a little far from the airport, but not enough to be uncomfortably inconvenient.

WELCOME to PITTSENNAT

History
Pittsennat is further away from the bustling Metro District of Drawkland. The furthest north of any city hosting WBC matches this cycle, Pittsennat has been an industrial town since the manufacturing industry first took off, taking raw materials mined in nearby Kanyoet and Iarocavet. However, this reputation of a booming industrial center was not the first way Pittsennat got its fame. When Drawkland's military was first being restructured as a federally-funded and national force, the first and main academy for the Army was constructed right in the outskirts of Pittsennat (though it's not in the outskirts much anymore). Since then, Pittsennat was established as a military sort of town. For a time, if somebody lived in Pittsennat, you could assume they were either in the military or a factory/mill worker.
Obviously Pittsennat has modernized since then, but its hard-nosed reputation has remained. It's not considered one of Drawkland's massive cities that have a huge cultural pull, but it's certainly a household name, and the most major city in its district. Several million people call it home, and it's certainly got a devoted and proud population of people.

Sports
Being more of a regional powerhouse than a national one, Pittsennat never fully got on the sports train. Still, back when pro teams were starting to show up and leagues were beginning to be organized, one of Pittsennat's richest metal magnates invested in founding a couple of teams, the Reds (soccer) and Cadets (baseball). Both names are references to the army presence in the town, with cadets being trained at the academy and "reds" being a nickname for the red uniforms of said trainees when they're on leave. While Pittsennat is not a big money destination, the sports-rich reputation of the north ensures that the teams are able to find reasonable success.

Tourism
One of the downsides of Pittsennat's more working-class and military feel is that there's a distinct lack of big-ticket tourist attractions for visitors to reach. Sure, there's military and city history museums to hit, and you can visit the modest downtown, but there's not a huge amount of things to do. The biggest pull is the river that slices right through downtown, the same river that has Drawk City much further upstream. There's plenty of parks and fun outdoor entertainment to enjoy, especially in the springtime and when events (like the WBC!) are in town. The other downside is that Pittsennat is relatively on its own, so you'd probably have to wait until a later round to try and visit other cities in Drawkland, unless you have the money to be flying all over the place.

RIVERFRONT FIELD

Riverfront Field is one of the gems of Pittsennat's downtown. As the name implies, the stadium is right along the riverfront, nestled between two iconic bridges spanning the waters. The main skyline of Pittsennat is on the other side of the river, so the opening in the outfield grandstands reveals a beautiful view of the river, the park on the other bank, and the pretty skyscrapers that accentuate Pittsennat's downtown. It's a great view, and the stadium has always been relatively well-kept, despite its understandably more industrial look. It's midsized, for a Drawkian ballpark, so it's a little more cozy than the massive cathedrals you'll find in the Metro District, for instance.

One of the other interesting parts of Riverfront Field is the large and flat stage in center field. Usually it's empty, with the backdrop simply displaying a massive Cadets (or in this case, WBC) logo for games. However, during Cadet road trips or outside baseball season, the stage is often used for big concerts by famous artists than have the popularity to fill stadiums. The downtown location of the field is also going to be really convenient for tourists and fans, since it's within a short drive or quick ride on the bus or tram system to wherever you'd want to go.

WELCOME to CEMMENDY

History
Cemmendy is located along a river at the edge of a desert. This river is sourced from further inland, and eventually comes though Ducentu and into the Oreme Sea, which leads to the Oreme Ocean. For a long time, Cemmendy was a completely irrelevant town, never a big player in Drawkland's early history or even its middling history. Ducentu, being a port town and nestled in the gap of a continental mountain range, was always the powerhouse of the area. The advent of computation and programming began to change things for the dusty desert town, however. Stuck a bit halfway between the manufacturing town of Elmanden and the big trade town of Ducentu, Cemmendy was known for being a cheap place to live. When Elmanden's manufacturing industry began focusing on computer components like circuits and wires, lots of fledgling engineers and computer scientists decided to settle in Cemmendy due to its cheap real estate and proximity to two major powers in the industry.
It didn't take long for the information age began and computers really took off. And for this new technological boom, Cemmendy was in the forefront. Intelligent and capable engineers and programmers flocked from the prestigious southern universities to this nearby new boom town, where tech companies began to stick their roots and prosper. Within 50 years of the first generation of nerds to move in, Cemmendy had become a household name and an important destination for anybody that wanted to get into the tech industry.

Sports
Obviously, due to its irrelevance in Drawkland's early history, Cemmendy never had a big pro sports presence. Especially being close to the bigger town of Ducentu, no teams ever really had the chance to get their start in Cemmendy. But when the new tech million- and billionaires suddenly had a lot of money to spend, they decided to open a technical university in town. Cemmendy Tech started as an academic-only college, but in order to bring more blue-collar blood into the town, the university administration decided to invest in sports, especially the basketball team. It worked, and the college basketball team skyrocketed in skill and popularity. Some of the university founders and some other newly rich CEOs in town decided to take advantage of this new popularity by establishing a pro team in basketball and baseball, since both leagues expanded around the same time. The baseball team, the Pickmen, was named after the humble mining beginnings of the city.

Tourism
Cemmendy is one of Drawkland's tech capitals, so there's a lot of futuristic and high-tech stuff around. If you're a fan of modern, brutalist, or abstract building styles, you will have a blast in downtown Cemmendy. Museums and exhibitions are peppered all around the glassy downtown, and there's a lot of hip places to get food or drinks. Cemmendy also has an active amateur e-sports community; there's internet cafes and gaming bars all over town. If technology and games aren't your thing, you could always go down the river (via boat, train, car, plane) on a day trip to Ducentu, which has a lot more history and non-modern attractions to enjoy.

PICKMEN PARK

In accordance with the glassy, metallic, futuristic style of Cemmendy's downtown, Pickmen Stadium is similarly modern in design. The exterior is covered with sleek glass sheets and metal, and features plenty of abstract art pieces around its exterior. Pickmen Stadium was built on the former site of a large park in the center of a big cluster of office skyscrapers and fancy apartments, so from inside the stadium it's surrounded on all sided by tall, shiny buildings. The stadium itself has a metallic and clean feel to it, with the brightest spots of the stadium being the bright blue seats in the lower bowl. Unlike many ballparks, Pickmen Park is completely enclosed, even in the outfield, with a double deck surrounding the entire field. There are three massive screens, one behind home plate at the top of the upper deck, and two at the top of the upper deck at each foul pole.

The clean and futuristic feel of Pickmen Park may be startling to some, but it's still a sight to behold. The elevated MAGLEV trains used for public transport downtown are well-designed and efficient, so getting to and from the stadium should be no problem. The strangest part of it may be the blue-colored grass turf used in the outfield, but we're sure you'll be used to it after a couple games.

WELCOME to CHELSTIO

History
Chelstio is by far the smallest city on the list of WBC 48 host cities, though still home to millions. Chelstio is, like Pittsennat, the biggest city in its area, and far from any major population centers. Back in the mythic days of Drawkland, Chelstio was not one of the major kingdoms or castles in play. It was more of a village nestled in a thin patch of an otherwise dense forest, and mostly kept to itself. When the Unification War passed and Drawkland united as one nation, people were more likely to travel longer distances since the land was friendlier and easier to traverse. Chelstio benefited from this greatly, as it was one of the easiest places to pass through on your way to more important cities.
As scientific studies began to take shape as a more common path for intellectuals to take, Chelstio became home to one of Drawkland's first major astronomers. In the twilight of his career, he founded a university of astronomical studies. After several generations, it became a more general university, but its reputation as the best place to study the stars remained. As telescope and other space-related technology improved, Chelstio just became more of a power in that sphere of study.

Sports
As one could imagine, Chelstio was not really known as a sporting town at any point in its history. However, when baseball was just beginning to spread across the nation, a group of guys at the university decided to start a team. By some stroke of luck, they were actually quite good, and they elected to found a professional team (the Stars) in town once they graduated. They played out of the university's recreational fields, before saving up enough money from winnings and revenue to build their own modest park more in the center of town. Though the original generation of players retired, they had enough success to draw others to the team. When Drawkland's professional league was formed, they made the cut, and its status as a lovable small-market legacy team kept it afloat until modern days. They may not be the most successful team in the nation's history, but the town loves the team, and is one of the most loyal fanbases around.

Tourism
As Chelstio is a smaller town, it doesn't have really any interesting things to do. If you're a space geek, you'll probably be in heaven, as the Space and Astronautics Museum near campus is one of the most expansive of its kind in Drawkland. Especially for those from nations of lesser tech, you might be interested to see how Drawkians developed their own deep space technology. One of Chelstio's biggest draws is actually a couple hour's drive from town, the Chelstio Observatory. Luckily for you, there's a long-distance shuttle to the destination, so travel won't be as difficult. Knowing that light pollution is very inhibiting for observing the night sky, Chelstio's local government has always ensured the city practices energy-saving and light-reducing measures. This means it may be strangely dark at night in town, but its secluded locale and relatively smaller population means it's safe to be out regardless.

THE STARFIELD

The Starfield is far from the humble beginnings of the Stars' parks. While it's one of Drawkland's smallest baseball venues, it's one of the most iconic and beautiful. The stadium is indoor, topped with a beautiful dome. The stadium itself is circular, almost resembling a space observatory if it weren't for the dark blue, stonelike exterior. Several pillars adorn the circumference of the exterior, which are a brilliant white. The dark blue walls and roof are dotted with star drawings, which light up at night when a game is in session. The inside has a similar paint job on the interior walls, giving it almost a cavernous feel. The roof has the same light-up stars, as well as models of Sonnel's several moons. The moons themselves are actually massive lights which keep the field lit during games and events.

The Stars have a special ritual before the first pitch of every home game. After the lineups are introduced, the stadium's internal lights turn off, leaving the stadium in total darkness. One by one, the stars on the ceiling begin to light up, filling the stadium with very faint light. Once all the stars are lit, a spotlight shows on whoever is singing the national anthem, and fans usually turn on their phone flashlights to fill the room with a beautiful glow. Once the anthem finishes and the ceremonial first pitch is about to be thrown, the moons in the ceiling begin to light back up and bring the stadium back to its normally lit state. The Starfield operators plan to keep this ritual intact for all the WBC games held at the stadium, so fans and players have something near to look forward to.

Notes on the team
Athletes in prime ages on the form of a lifetime. The selection process took up most of the second half of the season and involved multiple different statistical models to predict what each player's baseline is and how good they are performing right now. This all leads to a team that's worthy of defending the 3rd place on the ranking.

Still, it's a very weird realisation to see Ko-oren at third. The sport is very strong, domestically, but it's done with a small base of elite players, and it feels like it could fall away from us at any moment. The form of several players, especially Berganza/Kagulazaka, Utada, Gavreau, Sotolongo, Ozawa, Agramonte, and Gray defensively, as well as Esumi, Shiro, Oshita, and Ritsushima offensively, is more indicative of this team's best possible performance than anything. Injuries will be very hard to replace.

The team uses a lot of pitchers per match. At the same time, it's not uncommon to see the starter go deep into the sixth, seventh inning. Using 3-5 pitchers is a decent minimum (for any Ko-orenite team).

Culturally, there is a divide between the Western players (those with Hispanic-sounding names), from Finisterre, and the Eastern players (those with Japanese-like names), from Yoshima. The former can come across as arrogant, while the latter are extremely defensive of their home state (a group of islands off the east coast). There have been independence movements. Other names (French, Dutch, Gehrennan, English) are from other regions of Ko-oren, and typically don't occur in baseball very often. They are mostly just happy to be there, but are also usually most in favour of a unified Ko-oren through and through.

Team Overview

Being a new nation with deep roots in baseball, The Daskies signed up for their first international tournament. Their high school federation has given Daskel the best talents of the nation, and scouts of the profesional league are permanently seeking for the next diamond in the rough. For this tournament, the Federation, in partnership with the profesional association of Daskelian Baseball (PDB), decided to send a team with the best U18-23 players in the nation.

The Daskies play in the Astor Dai Stadium, one of the biggest and oldest stadiums in the country. the "Dai" has a capacity of 60.000 attendants. Its trademark feature is the all-dirt infield.

Baseball in Daskel

Baseball is one of the most dominants sports in Daskel. However, baseball history didn't start with it's professionalization, but with a rapidly developing high school baseball federation. Baseball in Daskel started around 1909, when the sport arrived to the coasts of Kuji Bay. Since it's insertion, it spread through every prefecture of Daskel, creating a vibrant culture of colors, sounds and, of course, loads of baseball. The natural course of the activity lead to the creation of the "Federation of Daskelian High School Baseball", who watch over pesky head coaches, rough kiddos, and tiger parents who strive to see their children turn into a professional baseball phenomenon.

The National Tournament is held every year in November, start of the Daskelian Summer. In that tournament, 30 schools teams battle in the burning sun, not only defending the pride of their high school, but also the pride of their entire province. It's usual occurrence that other province teams cheer for their final representative, in and out the stadium.

One big custom of Daskelian baseball is to bow in front of opponents before and after the game, and we'll absolutely see that in this tournament. Watch out for daskelian fans! They know how to make a good atmosphere, bringing music and entire brass bands to the stand.

Kriegiersien Nationalteam Baseball

Kriegiersien is a nation that loves sport, but sports without an Olympic tradition always had a problem.

Now, with a possibility to be played at the next Olympics, Kriegiersien Baseball got a chance to show itself on the international stage.

The on short notice build up National Team uses the World Baseball Classics to prepare for the next Olympics and as intern qualification.

Most players are from the capital, where, thanks to an initiative from a Sponsor, a giant Stadium had been built already years ago.

So the best players from the KBL (Kriegiersien Baseball League) have now to wear the Kriegiersien Olympic jerseys and swap their clubs caps (the only thing they are normally wearing at games, in the nation were nudity is mandatory) with theses ‘uniforms’.

The home stadium of the Greater Nordics is the National baseballl stadium. It is a classic style ballpark outside of Copenhagen. It seats 38,000.

My players are aggressive at the plate and on the basepaths. They may be caught stealing because of it but they also steal a lot of bases. They like to swing for the fences on every pitch so they strike out more than most teams but they can also score a lot of runs off of homers. There is two changes in the roster, both being pitchers. The longtime starter pitcher and first in the rotation, Jon Isaksson has retired and joined the staff as pitching coach. Also longtime closer Lise Olsen has been hampered by injuries this Nordic Baseball season and has decided to call it a career. The starting lineup remains the same though.

Divvying up the Schedule - Endless Division

Twelve games against teams that are really close to us. The two northernmost nations of Atlantian Oceania take each other on during the first and sixth series, and the two westernmost nations of Atlantian Oceania will play each other during the third and eighth series. What's more, these three teams are among the highest ranked teams in the Multiverse and all three are in this to reach the Round of 16 at the very least. The bad news is that only two teams graduate from this very tough looking Group 3. And we can just imagine all Xannerians raising their eyebrows at the start of this article. "What about us?" being the collective cry from a proud nation with a proud team - and we can't rule them out at all. We never planned to, it's just that they are from Esportiva so the headlines don't exactly write themselves. Then, there is Northwest Kalactin, also very much from Atlantian Oceania but not a nation we have a long history against. It's also the nation with a very high likelihood of joining an ever-growing list of teams we just seem to face in every tournament of every sport, following the likes of Darmen, Banija, Taeshan, Cassadaigua, and many more, such as... Quebec and Equestria. Lastly, there is South Newlandia, who are complete strangers to us and we're curious to see what kind of team steps up to the plate.

The Dragonflies get three home series in the first five rounds, which makes our schedule very away-heavy at the end. Building up a lead in the standings and then not let it slip away towards the end seems like the second-best M.O., just behind building up a lead and then maintaining that lead throughout the end. Quebec is up first, followed by Xanneria, then the Equestrian States, so we face all of the top 30 early on, then there are six games against the less prolific baseball nations. Obviously, the second half of the schedule works the same way, with 9 tough games of which 6 are away, and then six more games against teams we should mathematically beat. But this is Ko-orenite baseball, so going 18-0 against the former teams and 0-12 against the latter wouldn't really surprise us either.

The Ko-orenite Baseball Council has, following the draw, immediately booked 14 venues across Ko-oren. Instead of tying an entire series to one single stadium, the KBC is not above dividing up a series across multiple towns and cities. Road trips galore.

As with every year, some places have been snubbed. With so many towns that have baseball as its biggest attraction, it is inevitable that some towns cannot be visited. There is a precarious balance between playing big games in big stadiums on the one hand, and giving each town what it deserves. This Classic, unfortunately, we won't be visiting the smaller venues on the island of Leleia; Nitoya and Aviansola. On the mainland, it's the Étouille/Granon region that isn't featured on the fixture list. The biggest snub of them all is the third largest stadium in the country: Suvira's Obsidian Park.

The Jersey World Baseball Classic Preview
Welcome to the Jersey Baseball Classic Preview this WBC we will be ranking and comparing all the Jersey’s from the teams competing in WBC 48. So far the announced jerseys have been the Pripet Socialist Republic, Northwest Kalactin, Ko-oren, Kriegiersien And Drawkland. So far it is looking Kriegiersien will... struggle in this competition. The Pripet Socialist Republic has pretty cool jerseys, they might do well. The only problem with the Kalactanian Jersey’s is that they have some weird font on the front. The Ko-oren jerseys are good they look good until you get to the back, the neon green jerseys have some sort of national symbol on the back. Meanwhile, the blue jerseys have nothing on the back, what concerns the jersey experts were that there are no names on the back. The hats look pretty good also. The Drawkland jerseys haven’t been fully released yet although we expect them to use the Base Corps jerseys again.

Preview of Kalactanian Group
Group B looks very hard this edition with 3 top 20 teams and the Royal Kingdom of Quebec. Ko-oren looks like the hardest team in our group this year they came into this tournament ranked number 3 in the world. The ponies of Equestrian states looks to be the second best team in the group, if they end coming through with their relievers. Xanneria is also looking to have a strong team because of their recent strong performances. Nobody really knows about South Newlandia although if they come out and start winning they could come to be one of the power nations in some later classics. The Kalactanians look to finish in the top half of their group although they do play in possibly the hardest group in the World Baseball Classic. Group F also looks hard with Drawkland and Banija who should be able to easily win that group, although Kita-Hinode could challenge for second place in that group. Group 1 seems to be the easiest group with 2 unranked teams and the Hampton Islands as the top team in the group.

Sizing Up The World Baseball Classic,

The 48th World Baseball Classic will be underway soon, thankfully. It seems like it has been a long time since the last one that we played but some of that might be because we did not provide a lot of the media coverage for that one as we normally do. A lot of the sporting media budgeted time was focused on the overall preparations for World Cup 84 then. Now, the next World Cup is still in the sign up phase, so there should not be many distractions to us. Fine, we will have NSSCRA on occasion to discuss, and eventually the International Basketball Championships will be underway. When a host is found, anyway. We should be spending more time on NSCAA 11, maybe, in terms of covering it, but there is not a lot of media coverage there, in general.

The baseball world is focused on Drawkland this time, and the hosts have made sure to say that if anyone has a virus running rampant through their country, they will be disqualified. No wait, they didn’t say that. Nor did they say they will disqualify anyway who says “10-3" more then once. Fine, got that out of my system. Drawkland is actually a great nation, which you probably know, is on another planet. That will have team have to increase their travel budgets, but for Team Cassadaigua, that is not an issue. We’ve made trips to Drawkland before, and we like going there, and it not just because of their very tall, handsome men that they have. At any rate, it’s a good change of pace host from us, Newmanistan, and Free Republics. Let’s talk about the team.

The Fillies roster does not have a lot of turnover due to many players really being at that prime age right now. Upper 20's and lower 30's is where you will find most of the players. One difference to mention is that Samantha Owens has been promoted to be the ace of the staff after her monstrous season. Her 24-3 season saw her win her final 13 decisions overall, and ERA of 2.11 is obviously impressive. However, during those 13 starts, Samantha registered a 1.55 ERA. So, that stats are good, and she comes into the Classic pitching very well. There have been some changes in the bullpen to look over. Roxanne Gomez will be the new closer for the team, and a few new faces are seen. In terms of the hitters, there is not much difference, but two newcomers take over starting spots in their debut. Rachel Kessler, at short, and Tori Coufal, in right, were the two players. Kessler is obvious due to her excellent season, but Coufal maybe a little more of a surprise as there are outfielders in Cassadaigua with better stats. I think she will be a good player to hit right in front of the pitcher, because ideally, you don’t want the pitchers leading off an inning. Tori is also excellent with the glove, and that goes a long way, too, of course.”

As far as the group is concerned, Cassadaigua will be joined by Saintland (because, of course), Mushroom Kingdom, The Sarian, Imperial Joseon, and Gekkeom. I don’t have to tell you about Saintland, we know what they’re all about. Mushroom Kingdom and The Sarian are ranked teams that have not done much in this recently, and Gekkeom is unranked and an unknown. Imperial Joseon, an unranked nation, is a potential spoiler here, because if you look at youth soccer tournaments (I know, they’re only youth soccer tournaments), they have been very impressive, so they seem to have what it takes to compete in sports. Unrankeds are always ones to watch, and if their baseball program is good, then they will be a challenge to beat. Fortunately, we know that Maddie Polanco will have this team ready to go as she always does as we search for our fourth World Baseball Classic title.

As much as he relished the opportunity to be the manager of the Sarzonian national baseball team, Geoff Yancey couldn't shake the sense of loss.

His best friend on the Sarzonian coaching staff, his former boss, and the man who saw potential in Yancey that even the longtime hitting coach didn't see in himself was gone.

Khalil Dennis retired as Sarzonia national team manager and decided to return to Delaclava, where he still managed the Catherina Fighting Doves. He later became a studio analyst for Delaclav baseball broadcasts.

Sure, the two men stayed in touch the first offseason, and they both talked as much as their schedules allowed. Yancey founded a baseball academy that sought to bring the game to children who otherwise wouldn't have had the opportunity to play an organised sport. The machinations of running the academy, to say nothing of the baseball aspect of his work, plus the demands on Dennis of managing a major league team and his now-husband became too much for the two men to keep up with each other.

The fact that Sarzonia was once again competing in the World Baseball Classic meant that Yancey was only too happy to apply for the managerial role, even though he had scant experience making the decisions Jim Paulsen and Dennis made on a daily basis. Fortunately, longtime Woodstock Mountaineers manager Brad Howland was willing to serve as bench coach. That would give Yancey the sounding board he knew he needed.

He decided to make his first mark on the team by opting to use the designated hitter for Sarzonia's home games at Fleetwood Park. He knew Dennis wouldn't have employed the DH, but he knew Sarzonia's lineup lacked power without one.

Several of his colleagues from Paulsen's and Dennis's coaching staffs had retired, so Yancey had to assemble a staff of his own. It felt strange not going to battle with people who had become a second family to Yancey, but the biggest hole for Yancey involved sitting in the proverbial big chair.

This is Khalil's chair, Yancey thought when he stood in front of it. He caught the glance from Howland and realised he couldn't treat himself as an interloper. He lowered himself into the chair slowly, only to shoot up quickly when he saw a botched double play during a scrimmage against Woodstock City College.

"HEY! YOU'VE GOTTA WATCH THAT TRANSFER FROM THE GLOVE!" Yancey shouted. "It's only gonna get faster from here on!"

Boy will it ever, he thought.

About South Newlandia
South Newlandia is joining the International Competition for the first time in the 48th Edition of the World Baseball Classic, and they could hardly be more of an outsider. Baseball hasn’t been relevant here for a long time, and as a result most players of the comparatively small squad are still very young, and some of them are not even professionals yet. Especially with such strong nations as the Equestrian States (Ranked 16th), Xanneria (Ranked 18th), and group favourite Ko-oren (Ranked 3rd), it is hard to expect anything from the newcomers. Nevertheless, they will try their very best, and try to learn from this opportunity.
South Newlandia is playing all of their home-games in the Elephant-Stadium, a small venue at the south of the capital city Elephant Valley. The stadium can host up to 8000 people, but it is rarely ever filled completely, even though 3000 of the seats are designated for the fans of the away-team.
Foreigners are always welcome in the very inclusive South Newlandian society, and visitors from other nations hardly have to worry about breaking unexpected rules. They should be aware; however, that polygamy has been recently outlawed again.

Hampton Island Golden Bears

In regards to Midnight, who is an actual black bear: he is ok with being referenced as a Golden Bear for the competition. No one knows how he became so good at baseball. Will get along with teammates and opponents as long as he is well fed before the game. The team was looking to liven things up after making the playoffs for the first time in World Baseball Classic 43, before losing in the first round. He performed well during WBC 44, and the upswing continued in the last classic. He should not be considered sentient (he can’t talk).

Archbishop Stadium is the home stadium of the Londinium Capitols as well as the Nova Anglican national team. It's not as hard on right-handed hitters, but is a fly ball pitcher's paradise. Many people are seen in the bay outside of the stadium attempting to catch home runs hit into the water or simply cruising the bay while enjoying the sound of the game on the radio.

CEO: I don’t care who the hell is in our group. They make the top two, or else we do massive changeover for the next one.

Assistant: They have to play Hapilopper and Abanhfleft, sir.

CEO: What??? How the hell are they not top seeds or at least second seeds, too?

Assistant: Abanhfleft is the second seed. Hapilopper is third.

CEO: Noooooooooooo!

Assistant: They are the pot four team.

CEO: What?

Assistant: Nevermind.

CEO: There goes the publicity stunts.

Assistant: They are fifth, but aren’t you Republican?

CEO: What?

Assistant: Sorry. Go on.

CEO: How the hell is Hapilopper only a pot three team? Something has to be wrong! Send a message to the organizers and tell them they messed something up with Hapilopper. No way they are a pot three.

Assistant: It is a correct ranking, sir. There is nothing wrong. Maybe they are just not as good in baseball as they are in stock car racing.

CEO: Lisander is a pot 2 team. Lisander sucked when they tried NSSCRA. How can they be good in this? Surely Hapilopper is better then them.

Assistant: NSSCRA success means nothing in the World Baseball Classic. After all, aren’t we a prime example? We suck in NSSCRA, but are ranked seventh here.

CEO: Very well. Look, we still got Midnight.

Assistant: You know the day after the Hapilopper Race, the Super Skychief 500, we are in Hapilopper for a three game set. Want to stick around?
