[PASSED] Commend Almonaster Nuevo

Postby Makdon » Fri Mar 13, 2020 8:43 am

My first attempt at a sc resolution, huge thanks to bormiar for helping draft this :D

The Security Council,

ADMIRING the flags Almonaster Nuevo’s artists and government officials have crafted for foreign nations, producing more than 1800 flags over the course of 5+ years, and the consistent and high-quality commissions that Almonaster Nuevo’s artists and government leaders have given for so long,

RESPECTING the commitment Almonaster Nuevo has continually shown to lending a helping hand to other nations, through the nation’s long-lasting dedication to providing an incredibly valuable and difficult to locate service with no reward, only to help their fellow nations, performing selfless acts time and time again over the course of years,

UNDERSTANDING that flags are a key component of any nation, which take an incredible amount of talent and knowledge to create, and that only a select few nations have artists who possess such abilities, and that among those nations, still fewer are willing to let their skills be given freely to the world,

AWED by the other graphic work Almonaster Nuevo’s designers have produced for multitudes of nations and regions, regularly creating seals and other iconography, even producing official government seals and other art for 10000 Islands,

INSPIRED by the artists and government officials of Almonaster Nuevo indiscriminate willingness to create works of art for all other nations, and to treat all nations with respect, kindness, and generosity,

COMMEMORATING Almonaster Nuevo’s service as a three-time NationStates World Fairs committee member, where they:

  • Acted as an incredibly active moderator for the discussion during the 5th world fair, consistently and quickly responding to moderation requests,

  • Conducted an insightful interview on the NationStates bank, a tool used to allow for economic tracking and banking, which was open to anyone who registered,

  • Provided help in essential areas of the fair, such as setting up many regional booths, as well as giving technical assistance for the forums,

IMPRESSED by their service and work in region building for Canada, in which they have served as World Assembly Delegate and almost all other elected roles, first taking political office in 2007, as well as being an incredibly active and committed ambassador to multiple major regions,

HEREBY COMMENDS Almonaster Nuevo.

It's a good start, I've added a couple suggestions in red. I'd remove the comma after "1800 flags" to make the flow of the clause better, but it still seems clunky.

Makdon wrote:IMPRESSED by the consistent and high quality work that Almonaster Nuevo's artists and government leaders has have given for so long,

In your first clause you mention Almonaster Nuevo's artists, but here you kind of mention them like a player and not consistent like an RP type style. I'd say "Almonaster Nuevo's artists and government leaders" to tie into the part about Canada in your draft and replace "has" with "have".

Makdon wrote:RESPECTING the commitment they have shown to helping other nations, through their continued dedication to providing an incredibly valuable service with no reward, as flags are a key component of any nation, and take a vast amount of talent and knowledge to create,

Perfect.

Makdon wrote:AWED by the other graphic work Almonaster Nuevo has produced for multitudes of nations and regions,

Can you go into more depth here? I know Almonaster has designed stuff for XKI, so if you could find and give examples of what they've designed that'd be great.

Makdon wrote:COMMEMORATING Almonaster Nuevo’s work as a three time NationStates World Fairs committee member, as which where they:

I added a suggestion for re-wording, because that part seems clunky.

Makdon wrote:IMPRESSED by their service and work in region building for Canada, in which they have served as World Assembly delegate and Minister of Foreign Affairs, among other roles,

Can you give examples of what they've done in these roles? I feel like expanding this a bit will help your draft.

Don't know if you need to uppercase all of commend, but this is a good first draft. Remember, you have plenty of space to expand on things because the limit is 5,000 characters :).

Great choice of nominee!

You mention "other graphic work". Maybe you could explicitly mention the seals and logos that they do a thread for.

Maybe not commendable, but it might add some colour to mention their card collection of residents of Canada (see here. I guess it's art-themed.

Seconding Kuriko's stylistic and grammatical comments.

I have always been impressed by Almonaster's participation in TNP's forums in their role as an ambassador to us.

I echo Praeceps that Almonaster has also been a fantastic Ambassador from Canada to 10000 Islands. Canada is 10000 Islands' second longest continuous alliance (after Texas), thanks in large part to Almonaster and Mathilda Love both serving as exemplary Ambassadors. I realize this is probably Rule 4 disallowed, but Almonaster also has almost 9000 forum posts which I would say is pretty dang impressive for someone who isn't actually a resident of the region.

As further evidence of Almonaster's image design and diplomatic efforts, I have counted and confirmed (there may be more!) at least 24 designs by Almonaster that have been incorporated/used by the official 10000 Islands government.

I fully support this resolution and look forward to such a deserving nominee receiving appropriate recognition.

It's rather rare that someone in NS is recognized by the World Assembly for artistic endeavors. And he does do good work. This has my full support. ^_^

Perhaps you could do something fun with the proposal, putting a spin on the wording to make it sound like they are one of the premier designers for national imagery in the world, having been approached by X national leaders to create flags and seals for use in heraldry and national iconography. Something along those lines might be fun. Especially since they are obviously such a creative individual, themselves.

Also, I believe they were involved with the NS World Fair (though, considering its outcome, I don't know whether this would help or hurt...but they did seem to put in a lot of work).
Edit: I overlooked that you'd already included this

I've tried to take in everyones advice about including more information about Almonaster's graphics work and positions in Canada. Special thanks to kuriko for the editing advice :D

This isn't technically accurate. We don't have an official government seal - we have seals for many different portions/functions/departments of our government. Almonaster has designed (I think) 21 of those and 3 Knights statues - for 24 total images.

Perhaps "including producing official government seals and monuments for 10000 Islands," would be more appropriate.
You could also ask around to see if Almonaster does anything similar in other regions to make it even broader about international impact.

Really? If I recall you recently said something along the lines of this "Extra-ordinary skill is not commendable in itself. Aiding the community with that skill is what makes one commendable." Well, if it's aiding the community you want, then it'll be hard to find someone better than Almonaster. So if you wouldn't mind, I'd love to hear exactly why you think their accomplishments aren't warranting of a commendation

Can we get clarification on which seals and other "art" for 10000 Islands? Because most everything XKI produces is aesthetically hideous, and if he is responsible for creating any of the eyesores we all now associate with XKI, that isn't exactly a commendable thing, or at least my eyes don't think so.

Turns out, I was wrong. Even aiding the community with such skill isn't commendable anymore. The SC has raised the bar massively with its most recent votes.

Makdon wrote:So if you wouldn't mind, I'd love to hear exactly why you think their accomplishments aren't warranting of a commendation

Their helpfulness to other nations isn't unique and doesn't rise to the SC's standard for commendation,
Their moderation of the NSWF, conducting a sole interview, and "assistance" pales in comparison to other contributions by players that the SC have already ruled as being unworthy of commendation,
Their region-building and service to Canada has also been easily eclipsed by multiple other players where the SC deemed the accomplishments unworthy of commendation,
and as a whole, their body of work is much smaller compared to other players who were deemed unworthy of commendation.

That leaves their flag-making, which is not unique either. In fact, Imkiville did better work in the flag-making realm, and Imkiville's Commendation draft was also scoffed at by the SC.

Now you've heard, exactly, why I think their accomplishment aren't warranting of a commendation. I can't support this.

Now, in an attempt to avoid being political about the whole situation, I do think it's unfair to vote based off of the SC's standard - you should vote based off of your own standard. If you think something is commend-worthy, vote for it. Who gives a shit if the other members of the organization think it's worthy. We get good, honest proposals when people vote based off of their own conscience, not when they vote based off of some preconceived notion over whether something is a good proposal or not.

Rant over. You can politic over this all you want, that was just my two cents on the situation.

Turns out, I was wrong. Even aiding the community with such skill isn't commendable anymore. The SC has raised the bar massively with its most recent votes.

In this, I'd only echo Morover's comment.

Their helpfulness to other nations isn't unique and doesn't rise to the SC's standard for commendation,

By those standards, GP and RP and virtually everything bar minigames cannot be commended by the SC. These things only become unique when done with intensity and/or creativity greatly above the average, Almonaster having done well in both metrics.
Yokiria wrote:Their moderation of the NSWF, conducting a sole interview, and "assistance" pales in comparison to other contributions by players that the SC have already ruled as being unworthy of commendation,
Their region-building and service to Canada has also been easily eclipsed by multiple other players where the SC deemed the accomplishments unworthy of commendation,

There is proof, and there is evidence.

This is not intended to be proof in and of itself. It simply goes along with the other evidence, and it's the job of the writer to make it clear how they connect in the "introduction" and "conclusion" with a "thesis" of sorts, thus forming a cohesive picture of the nation. To take each piece of evidence separately, analyze them as though they were left alone, and then vote based on that, you would ultimately find no nation commendable.

Yokiria wrote:That leaves their flag-making, which is not unique either. In fact, Imkiville did better work in the flag-making realm, and Imkiville's Commendation draft was also scoffed at by the SC.

Cormactopia Prime wrote:Those graphics for XKI aren't that impressive. As Yokiria noted, Imkiville's graphics were better and her commendation was rejected.

I think the easiest fallacy in the SC is to suggest that it is bounded by its previous votes.
