Also I repeat, they're not really free to choose when they're at the mercy of other criminals.

And firstly, that's nothing to be proud of.
BUT more importantly, prisoners are not free to make such a choice. There is pressure from people who might kill them, to get a tattoo
And finally it is contrary to the purpose of prison to make the prisoner pay their debt and THEN go back to being a lawful citizen. They can't do that if they have the mark of some prison gang on them.

Do you actually think making them illegal will stop them?
I mean..... doing illegal things is kind of WHY people are there.

Plus how much can it really be worth extending a sentence for? It's basically getting more prison for the crime of being in the vicinity of other criminals, in prison, where you were sent for committing a crime.

Not to mention stripping you of your First Amendment right to Freedom of Expression.

It's already a thing in the federal prison system though. Getting a tattoo can lead to spending more time in prison, a fine, loss of privileges, etc.

Granted i only did a pdf find on that file, but the word tattoo was not in there.
And to add. I think getting a tattoo in general is a bad idea, but I dont want to impose that opinion on others, and I dont see a public safety reason to impose it on prisoners. If I did see a public safety reason I would be ok with banning them.

I imagine that prison tattoos are not done in the most hygienic fashion.
