While Tattoos do mark you forever as a person, I personally have to say, the freedom of choice of what they do in Prison is to each their own. No harm in them getting what they want. But then again it would suck to get a Tattoo in prison and then become a lawful citizen again only to have that same Tattoo as a reminder of who you were and the memories of being in Prison. Or it could be a good thing to remind you to not do stupid crap to go back as well.

What’s the point in denying them that? It’s their bodies, let them get tattoos.

Also I repeat, they're not really free to choose when they're at the mercy of other criminals.

Got any evidence for the claim that all these people are being tattooed against their will instead of being active participants in getting/wanting the tattoo?

Also the "we deny them so many rights, why not this one too?" argument is perhaps the shittiest argument I've ever heard. We should be redesigning the prison system so that prisoners don't have so many of their rights stripped away - particularly for as long as we continue mass incarceration practices and the majority of people in prison don't belong there (that's a whole argument for another day). But no, we should not be denying them more rights than we already are.

I don't disagree with the concept you're trying to promote here, OP, but you could have worded it better. Preferably with more words and better arguments.

Pressure from people who're prepared to break the law, you say. Surely a law will stop that.

Just another "I don't like/approve of it, so it should be illegal" position. Meh.

How about this: Just leave everyone else alone?

Plus how much can it really be worth extending a sentence for? It's basically getting more prison for the crime of being in the vicinity of other criminals, in prison, where you were sent for committing a crime.

It's already a thing in the federal prison system though. Getting a tattoo can lead to spending more time in prison, a fine, loss of privileges, etc.

I would think that every part of getting a tattoo in prison is already not permitted by the prison.

Also, tattoos aren't permanent. They can be removed or modified.

Granted i only did a pdf find on that file, but the word tattoo was not in there.

And to add. I think getting a tattoo in general is a bad idea, but I dont want to impose that opinion on others, and I dont see a public safety reason to impose it on prisoners. If I did see a public safety reason I would be ok with banning them.

I imagine that prison tattoos are not done in the most hygienic fashion.

Possibly, but the folks I know with them, never complained to me about that

They’re already in prison, somehow I don’t think they’ll care much if you criminalize tattoos...
