EU tourist authorization to begin Jan. 01, 2021

Postby Rio Cana » Sun Jan 19, 2020 1:12 pm

Next Jan. 01, 2021 the EU. will be implementing an authorization system (no they say its not a Visa) which all travelers to the EU. will need to fill out via the internet. Its called "ETIAS" (European Travel Information and Authorization System). Price is $7 Euros. If accepted you can enter the EU. If not, then get ready for a Florida vacation. Yes, this affects US citizens. Some US citizens say they will not bother with this and will go elsewhere to vacation. Currently, the US has a similar type of system implemented.

So what do you think. Will this deter many US and other nations tourists from visiting the EU? Will it increase internal tourism in the US and other nations?

I think this will deter some people from traveling to the EU. since the form you fill out on the internet asks too many questions. Most people, especially in the US, cannot be bothered by such things. Seems if you are not working could also affect your ability to get an authorization.

For more info. read this direct from the EU. - https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/etias/

Doubt this will deter US visitors to Europe. American visitors to Europe are disproportionately wealthy ones, who will not be encumbered by this fee.

I like to think this was designed to annoy the British, because that's exactly the sort of petty thing I would do.

The fee does not seem to be the problem. Its the questions they ask.

From the link:

Will British citizens be required to have the ETIAS authorization?

Since the UK is going through the Brexit procedures, it is still unclear of what the conditions for Britons wishing to enter the EU will be. However, the British are very likely to fall under the ETIAS program.

As the negotiations for the UK leaving the EU proceed, the situation will be clarified and British citizens will understand whether they have to get the ETIAS or not.

After reading about it, that it takes ten minutes max to complete, and that the approval is instant in the vast majority of cases, it seems alright. Sure, I'd prefer not to need it, but this is just another Brexit shit sandwich that I need to deal with to continue travelling in the EU.

Anyone entering any nation is subject to immigration and customs inspection. What the EU appears to be doing is attempting to automate some of that beforehand, charging a fee for it and making common carriers responsible for ensuring their passengers have obtained the authorization. Pretty straightforward. Any affect it has on tourism numbers will probably be from people who neglect their duty to determine and comply with the entry requirements for the countries they visit. What are they gonna do, go see some other Eiffel Tower, Colloseum or Brandenburg Gate?

Before the US brought in their system it was just a little card you filled in on the plane. This is just tit for tat.

Seriously though Google says Americans travel to Europe 12 million times a year. British people crossed over to the mainland something like a hundred and twenty-six million times every year. Per capita that's like 3% vs. 200%. Think about it this is clearly targeted at British and other countries in and around Europe, it has very very little to do with America.

But again it isn't exactly clear whether us Brits will be subject to ETIAS yet.

This was coming into play long before the Brexit vote. It's aimed squarely at the US.

It's meant to do what, exactly? Bother next to nobody? That's the effect. No one cares in the slightest. It's a tiny fee and approval is basically guaranteed. So, it's aimed at the US to what end?

Dunno, but asks you if you seek to engage in terrorist activities while in the US.

I mean, if you lie you committed fraud but if that's the case fraud will probably not be the worst thing you've done while in the US.
