What five changes to the government would you make?

Postby Kaltovar » Sat Jan 18, 2020 11:22 am

It's simple: What five reforms would you make to your own country if you had ultimate power? My intention in creating this thread is NOT for DEBATING the reforms people would make UNLESS you have ALSO posted your reforms first. It's far too easy to call people names without actually putting your own ideas up for poking.

I can't make you follow my original intention, but I will think you're pretty lame.

For me it would be, in no particular order:

1: Universal Healthcare
2: Drug Law Reform (Legalizing weed and decriminalizing hard drugs for PERSONAL use (not sales) in addition to amnesty for people convicted under old laws)
3: Prison Reform (No more private prisons, no more mandatory minimum sentences, felons can vote)
4: Ranked Choice Voting
5: Legalize Machineguns (pewpew)

What's the point then?

Edit: Also for changes I guess.
Revamp train infrastructure everywhere. Electrify train infrastructure. Make buses trolleys or trolley buses. Get rid of parking minimums. Ban nonessential cars in urban areas (work trucks, mail, and emergency vehicles would stay of course), only public transit.

In no particular order:

1. Loosening regulations on gun control (I'm not a gun person but I am mostly a personal freedom person)

2. Switch to proportional representation

3. Put more funding in education

4. Focusing more on rehabilitation than imprisonment

And...

5. Just get rid of the government :P

Legalize prostititon. (sic!)

Also quite possible some bigger changes to the adminstrative and governmental system and structure in general. Quite possible those would be requiering a total overhaul of the constitution though and aren't very realistic nor feasible, short of a total new state.

1) Tie minimum wage to local cost of living. This will result in:
A: a greater correspondence between necessary and actual local wages
B: rural revitalization, as cheaper labor in rural areas becomes more attractive to employers
and C: a lack of a need for the endless political fights over it
2) Rewrite alcohol laws so that a person needs a license to purchase alcohol, with the goal of encouraging responsible alcohol use.
3) Eliminate the cap on payroll taxes.
4) Create a UBI for families with children. Everyone else is perfectly fine living under a bridge or eating ramen.
5) Reinvest in infrastructure.

For 1 I would replace that with UBI

I disagree with 2

I like 3

I think 4 would encourage people to have children. Although I agree that children shouldn't be in poverty, I don't think we should be encouraging more people. I think the whole world needs to reduce it's population if we want to survive as a species.

5 I agree completely with

3 is probably the most necessary of the lot. 1 is another solution to the same problem, but I have "encourage full male employment" and "revitalize rural areas" as policy positions. 4 is something we just completely disagree with.
2 is essentially an alternative to having a drinking age. I argue it would work slightly better, others might argue it would work slightly worse.

1) Universal healthcare with the option to buy private for those who can afford it, and yes abortion would be covered. This would also include the ability of the US government to negotiate drug prices.
2) Tie minimum wage to local cost of living, an ensure that it is a living wage as originally intended.
3) End the draft and look into equalizing the treatment of men when it comes to things like prison sentencing as well as when it comes to domestic abuse, maternity paternity leave, family courts, etc.
4) Actually revitalize the infrastructure of the US, as it is now I see it as a national security issue.
5) People have been feeling unrepresented or ignored using the current voting system an with the current parties (Trump managed to tap into this issue), I think that the basic system of voting needs to be looked at and possible overhauled.

1) Universal healthcare is a good case.
2) An equal rights amendment - enforced. Even in areas where women are advantaged.
3) A tax code that takes into account hours worked. I'm not sure how to do this, but somehow we should make it account for hours worked so that people who work a lot of OT get a lower effective tax rate than someone who earns equally with no OT.
4) STV voting system
5) Prison time for politicians that pass bills that rampantly violate the constitution (can be executed by the court that finds the law unconstitutional if it is extremely so)

New Kereptica: Since power is changed energy over time, an increase in power would mean, in this case, an increase in energy. As energy is equivalent to mass and the density of the government is static, the volume of the government must increase.

revitalise industry/manufacturing in the west by mass spending on housing education and infrastructure to radically lower living and production costs

reinstate tariffs and remove welfare and redirect most healthcare spending to education (including post-18)

reintroduce colonialism in africa for mutually beneficial trade of resources for economic development and close ties

zone out china from the rest of the world in conjunction with other western countries to prevent their detrimental rise

make uninhabited iranian desert an extraterritorial renewed nuclear bomb testing ground, in a russian roulette of a new nuclear bomb dropped daily 1km closer to tehran until they yield and change government

I think it would depend on the type of election. For instance the president is supposed to represent the entirety of the US voting population, I am as such unsure why that particular office would need to be separated into voting districts when we no longer have the limitations on communication that we used to have.

Both the senate and the house are set up to represent individual areas of the country (with the Senate representing states while the House represents districts within the states), and I am not sure we need both to be set up like that. I think that leaving the Senate as is, representing states is fine, but that the House might need to be changed so that it does not represent voting districts (which should really happen at the state level government), but instead represent different ways of thinking about issues (for lack of better term different parties), sorta like what happens in various European countries. This would mean that you ensure that various ideologies are still represented while various state needs are also represented which will hopefully make it so that people no longer feel ignored.

I'm not allowed to set up rules for threads, and since I wanted to make a thread that's not about debates, Farnham had a problem with that. Since I now have to allow people to do that, I'm no longer interested in maintaining this thread or having discussions here. I've asked Farnham to lock it.
