On The Topic Of School Lunch Shaming

Postby Aeritai » Tue Jan 14, 2020 4:57 pm

For those who don't know what School Lunch Shaming is here a article that explains what it is.

Broadly speaking, “lunch shaming” refers to the overt identification and stigmatization of any student who does not have money to buy a school meal. While the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) narrowly applies this overt identification to students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch, in practice legal lunch shaming occurs against students whose family income exceeds free or reduced lunch eligibility thresholds. The purpose of lunch shaming is to embarrass a student and parent(s) so that a school lunch debt is paid quickly, in turn reducing a school’s financial burden.

Sources: https://www.americanbar.org/groups/youn ... h-shaming/

As we all know school lunch shaming is a problem in American schools and I want to discuss how we can prevent school lunch shaming and how we can provide lunch to children whose family can't afford to pay for school lunches because they're poor.

In my opinion I think school lunch shaming is disrespectful to both the student and their family. And I think schools shouldn't be shaming a student and their family because their poor to afford it. While I understand why schools need lunch money, there needs to be a better away to get the lunch money without shaming the student and their family.

What is your opinion on school lunch shaming NSG? And what are some ways to prevent this type of shaming?

So I guess you were one of the students that were able to afford a decent school lunch meal?

Seems like a non-problem. Seems like the bigger problem is kids going hungry during lunch rather than the fact of "lunch shaming."

So what does 'lunch shaming' involve? Kids picking on the 'poor kid', or teachers being assholes to the kid, or something?

I always like school lunch. I come from a school district where they actually have something that's edible.

If the student obtains sufficient sustenance paid for or provided by their parents, Then scold the other kids for bullying.

If the parents are neither paying for, nor providing lunch for their child, take the child from them for child abuse.

Wait really?

Besides that, I agree that kids going hungry is a bigger problem than shaming, and maybe some kids can't afford school food.

Could there be any kind of solution that doesn't involve us coughing up more taxes to the government? And just a question, has anyone thought of the way reduced lunch or free lunch could affect the productivity of America's hard working farmers?

No comment from the defeated side of the pond. This practice did not occur to any student at my school when I was attending; the husband and my daughter can vouch for the same on their part.

I can't read the whole thing but it seems to be schools outing parents and their children who are over the minimum threshold in terms of income yet still claiming free school lunches. I don't know what the minimum threshold but if this is the US then I can only imagine it's something ridiculous.

Having said that aren't lunches generally sponsored by Coke or Pepsi or some other ridiculously unhealthy company that shouldn't be in schools?

It doesn't help when a school is so anal-retentive it refuses an offer to pay off all the lunch debts just to squeeze the families of the children like a stress doll.

"Legal lunch-shaming"

Lolwut. Do they like have cafeteria boards posted with names and pictures of students and their parents who cannot afford lunch while assigning staff to point and laugh at said students during said lunchbreak?

This. Usually, it's just a bare-bones baloney or bottom-tier PBJ. Something cheap and not at all filling, but enough for the school to claim to have not let the kid go hungry and crappy enough to point the finger at the parents for not doing better.

I would guess it's more like register operators caling out students for not paying incured debts. My grandmother works a lunch line for the last ten years and she's always been very sassy and very proud of herself for calling the students out on all kinds of stuff.

Jeebus. Shaming kids for their parents either being poor or cheapskates...

How about the schools act like responsible adults and ask the parents to pay if it is so important instead of taking it out on innocents? Preventing bullying over this sort of shit sounds like a good idea too.

Schools should be about learning. School lunch shaming is opposed to that goal. School lunches only exist to benefit corporations like Pepsi while allowing the school to say that they fixed the problem. Also, pizza is not a vegetable, it’s a carbohydrate. School lunch should be reformed to improve quality and decrease cost. Ordering raw fruits, veggies, and bread from local providers and making the food in the cafeteria would help.

School is about the hidden curriculum. Yeah you got a math class and science and all that horse shit, but what I really learned in school was that the world is unfair, worthless roaches have the most power and good people suffer and when you lash out at the mistreatment, they'll point their fingers and say you're the bad guy. I learned in school that society ain't shit
