Our current date is October of 1989, the location: Southern China. Four months after the Tiananmen Massacre in central Peking the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Her Commonwealth withdrew themselves from the memorandum of understanding they had signed with the Peking regime 5 years prior regarding the status of Hong Kong, on top of the international sanctions meted out in response to the brutality witnessed that June day by the world. Now, instead of delivering the Pearl of the Orient to the People's Republic of China, Britannia employed a clause in the memorandum to enable a referendum to take place, a referendum involving every adult person born and residing in Hong Kong eligible to vote. Results of which overwhelmingly elected for inclusion into the Republic of China instead of the Peking regime. Peking is to say the least not very happy about the whole situation and is seeking to make Chairman Deng Xiaoping's threat of taking the city by force in a single afternoon reality.
The OOC-Story:
This is a scenario that Ostmark has been cooking on and off for the past decade or so, ever since I played Wargame Red Dragon actually. The geopolitical situation is very different from real life. Firstly, magic is a thing, granting every nation Witches to play with. Secondly, East Asia consists of three powers: People's Republic of China who owns a corridor down to Guangzhou's coastlines; Republic of China, owning the last pieces of land they held onto after the conclusion of the Chinese Civil War in 1955 - i.e. the provinces of Taiwan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, and parts of Anhui and Jiangsu, the Yangtze River forming its northern border against the PRC. The third regional power is the Empire of Fusō, stretching from the East China Sea to the middle of the Pacific.
Third and finally, Britannia has not gone and abandoned East of Suez like in real life. With its obligations under the two and a half century old Anglo-Fusō Alliance the Royal Navy maintains a significant capability presence in the ports of Singapore and Fusō itself and the airports of Hong Kong and Singapore are major hubs for the logisticians of the British Army and Royal Air Force.
You and your nation can do all the things one would expect a nation to do in response to a major conflict in the Far-East. Within reason and with an approved application of course.
