I think Jazz should make a come back, there were a lot of great Jazz musicians during that time, who knows what this day and age may come up with.

electric interurban railways, narrow gauge railways, density of public transportation service in relation to population 20 times what it is in the u.s. today, including rail and all other modes. typical cost of health care in relation to typical income. a real middle class.

i can't speak directly for the 1920s, my parents were alive then, but i can speak to health care costs in 1948, the year i was born, when $400 a month was a very good solid middle class income, that cost of a one week hospital stay, including all medication and doctor and nursing services, this was for my own birth, which was a difficult birth for my mother, and why i'm an only child, and i have the receipts for this, was $99.00. that's right, less the a hundrend dollars. not a thousand, and that just for per dium, but less then 100, for the whole deal.

and public transportation networks were growing with a great deal of public support and enthusiasm for their doing so.

there were of course also some significant abuses by the major long distance railroads, which led to their regulation and eventually regulated terrifs, hours of work rules and so on. but there were also growing networks of local short line services that connected with urban trolley lines and which connected with each other end to end, such that one could travel between chicago and new york, for example, if you wanted to travel cheaply and were in no hurry, you could do this, without ever having to board any of the major long distance services.

even in less dense regions, narrow gauge lines connected many smaller communities, and all of these were still growing and doing well.
and doing so without nearly the devistating environmental effects, though this was not a widely held concern, then today's super highways and reliance on the automobile. the latter having begun mass production, but still looked on primarily as a rich person's play toy.

and land was affordable too. on a typical average income most people could reasonably look forward to owning their own five acres and indipendence, and a home of their own, one big enough, with small rooms, but more of them then is typical today.

that's another thing, i wasn't there in the 20s, but in the 40s, 50 bux a month on a 20 year fixed, would buy one of those still typical houses.

2. America had a de-facto woman president.

While on the campaign trail pushing for the U.S. to accept the League of Nations, President Wilson suffered a blood clot that caused paralysis, partial blindness, and brain damage. For the remainder of his term—another year and a half—he was, as Burns describes, “an invalid at best, little more than a rumor at worst,” totally incapable of meeting with lawmakers, governing, or performing the duties of the presidency; the First Lady, Edith Wilson, stepped in and assumed his role. She controlled access to the president and made policy decisions on his behalf. When something needed to be signed or written, she wrapped her hand around his and scrawled words with a pen. The French ambassador to the United States reported back to his superiors that Wilson was a non-factor in governance. The real power rested with “Mme. President.”

3. America sustained the worst terrorist attack in its history.

On September 16, 1920, a horse-drawn cart carrying a massive, improvised explosive was detonated on the busiest corner on Wall Street. One eyewitness described “two sheets of flame that seemed to envelop the whole width of Wall Street and as high as the tenth story of the tall buildings.” Thirty-eight people were killed in the Wall Street Bombing, and hundreds were injured. It was, at the time, the worst terrorist attack in American history, unsurpassed in horror until the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995. The perpetrators were likely Italian anarchists.

6. The Constitution was twice amended in a single year.

It was the only year since the passage of the Bill of Rights that the Constitution was twice amended. The Eighteenth Amendment prohibited alcohol in the United States.
