YN's motto

Postby Xanthal » Thu Dec 05, 2019 2:21 pm

A national motto can encompass where a people came from and what's important to them, but more than that it's a declaration of purpose: a good motto can encapsulate the very spirit of a nation. Almost any time so much meaning is put into so few words, however, there's something to be lost in translation- sometimes literally as well as figuratively. This thread is a place to delve deeper into the context behind that little string of text. Following are some prompts to get you started, but feel free to answer in any form you choose.

What is your nation's motto? Is it different from what's on your nation page? Why?
If applicable, translate/transliterate the motto: into English if it's in a different language, back to the original if it's pre-translated.
Where did the motto come from? Who said/wrote it, and in what context?
Why was/is the motto important?
Is the motto official or unofficial? How did it achieve that status?
How does the government relate to it? How do the people?
Are there other mottoes which complement or compete with the primary motto in the public consciousness?
Have there been other mottoes in the past? When and why were they replaced?

----------

The Federation's current official motto is "Many Nations, One Federation." It replaced "Unity Through Respect" in 2396 and was seen by many as the final nail in the coffin for a once-popular philosophy that had long been in decay: that Xanthal should be not just a political union, but its people's primary national identity. In effect, it was a tacit admission by the federal government that Xanthal had been unable to subsume the disparate states into a unified culture and the new motto is intended to reflect a pivot away from the effort to do so while still impressing the importance of the union's other aspects. Like its predecessor, it was decided upon by committee. The people tend to identify more strongly with their state mottoes than the federation's.

"احذر الرجل الذي يستخدم القلم مثل السكين"
Ahdhir alrajul aldhy yustakhdam alqalm mithl alsakin.
Beware the man who uses the pen like a knife.

The motto was said by the nation's leader, Abdul' Hakim Hashim, in a talk once. It's not an official motto at all; no one identifies with any motto at all. What this means is to be wary of people who try to take something good and use it for something bad.

Liberty, Democracy, Socialism is the official motto of the Democratic Republic of Gandoor and has been used since the establishment of the Democratic Republic in 1904. The motto reflects the intent of the revolutionaries who created the Democratic Republic to create a society which embodies the ideals of liberty and democracy while working towards the establishment of a socialist society. The motto's wording was directly inspired by the motto of France (Liberté, égalité, fraternité), as most of the Gandoorese revolutionaries were inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution, and the motto was originally going to be Liberty, Equality, Socialism, a near direct translation of the French motto (just with Socialism replacing Fraternity) but was changed to reflect the revolutionary's goal of establishing a fully democratic state in Gandoor.

The motto replaced our nation's previous motto of For the Grace of God and Nzard, which was used during the existence of our nation's monarchy. Liberty, Democracy, Socialism replaced For the Grace of God and Nzard for the simple reason that the Nzardom of Gandoor no longer existed following the Gandoor Revolution. The new Gandoor was no longer a monarchy with a strong religious influence, it was to be a secular republic.

What is your nation's motto? Is it different from what's on your nation page? Why? "Invicta!"
If applicable, translate/transliterate the motto: into English if it's in a different language, back to the original if it's pre-translated. "Invincible", poetically it means 'Unconquered'
Where did the motto come from? Who said/wrote it, and in what context? It is a Latin phrase and battle-cry.
Why was/is the motto important? It is a memorial of a war we won that decided whether or not the Federated States would exist as a nation.
Is the motto official or unofficial? How did it achieve that status? Official, it was officiated by an Act of Congress in 1823.
How does the government relate to it? How do the people? The Government prints the motto of the nation on currency notes and in official symbols of the nation. The people tend more to the traditional motto of California.
Are there other mottoes which complement or compete with the primary motto in the public consciousness? The traditional motto of California is 'United in Diversity' which has been referenced on coinage by the government.
Have there been other mottoes in the past? When and why were they replaced? There have been no other mottoes adopted by the F.S.C. as the F.S.C., the motto of the Republic of New Alisonia was "Suffer no Kings", the motto of the original Republic of California was "Gloria!", the Latin word for 'Glory'.

The motto of the Federated States of California; 'Invicta!', Latin for the words 'Unconquered', received official status in 1823 after the First Calo-Cristobellan War. The traditional motto of California, which is also seen on some symbols of the nation is the phrase 'United in Diversity' and is felt to reflect California moreso than the official by most Citizens. It stands as a reflection of the fact the F.S.C. is a land of many disparate peoples that are more or less unified. United in Diversity has been referenced on coinage.

Brellach's 'motto', to use the loosest definition of the term, in its Anglicised form, is "Her Favoured Children, of Her Favoured Lands".

It's as much a statement of identity as it is a statement of intent. It is a paraphrased replication of text from the Canon of Her Divine Glory, the collection of ancient scrolls that makes up the basis of Brellachi religious beliefs, specifically their creation myth. The lands that constitute the Holy Queendom are believed to have been the final creation of Her Divine Glory. Her Divine Glory, upon having created the current incarnation of reality, realised that she had achieved her 'perfect form'. She created Earth last of all, then populated it with 'Her Children' - mortal humans.

Brellach was this goddess' final creation, intended to be a kind of 'divine retreat' - a paradise isolated from all other influences, where all of Her Divine Glory's favourite climes, creatures, and plants were represented, and so it became 'Her Favoured Lands'. Upon Her Favoured Lands, she created Her Favoured Children, the Brellachi, the last and purest of her human creations, who were placed there to enjoy in Her most perfect creation, to uphold her most important values, and to protect Her Favoured Lands from 'the Dark'. This belief was solidified centuries ago with the creation of the First Divine Queen in Brellach, who (along with all subsequent Divine Queens) was meant to be an Earthly avatar of Her Divine Glory in mortal form.

Brellachi faithful take their role as 'Her Favoured Children' seriously, and regard themselves as being blessed to live in 'Her Favoured Lands', a term which is almost synonymous with the formal name of the country. When the Holy Queendom was eventually founded with the signing of the Compact, and the First Divine Queen brought lasting peace to the country, she reputedly described what it meant to be a citizen living under the terms of The Compact thusly: "we are Her Favoured Children, and these are Her Favoured Lands. Nothing more, and nothing less".

Which, according to the canon, means that the motto should inspire myriad feelings in Brellachi - loyalty to their goddess, an innate duty for every citizen to defend Brellach with their lives against any and all nefarious influences (foreign or domestic), a recognition that they are the 'purest' of all creations, a feeling of fortuitousness that they were lucky enough to be born in Brellach, and a sense of reverence for the supposed Avatar of Her Divine Glory who saved Brellach from war, among others.

No other statement that has ever been uttered could ever mean more on an emotional, spiritual, or patriotic level to a Brellachi than "Her Favoured Children, of Her Favoured Lands". No other rallying cry could motivate them more, and no other sentence could tell anybody more about them. To the Brellachi, it describes literally everything that need to be said about who they are, what they are, what they believe, and how fiercely they'll protect it.

The current motto of the Asdian Empire is "Fråmatskridande och Fullkomlighet". In Standard, this means "Progress and Perfection". These very words were uttered by the current Emperor, Krister Ulf Sjöberg, during his Imperial Speech in 2550. Those 3 words describe the aims of the Empire; to progress, and to perfect everything. These two aspects are the most important to building the utopia the Empire is.

The official motto of Valentian Elysium is "Ad astra per aspera". It is Latin and can be roughly translated to "To the stars through hardship."
However, while not a motto, there is a very well-known phrase that was supposedly used when Holy Emperor Hugo the Conqueror fought Ultimate Supreme Emperor Julius in their final battle. The phrase is as follows: "Today, we use our power to fell a god, and then seize our destiny!"

What is your nation's motto? Is it different from what's on your nation page? Why?
TurtleShroom has two national mottoes that are used interchangably.
  • The Future Is In the Past
  • Sobriety, Purity, Asceticism

Where did the motto come from? Who said/wrote it, and in what context?
The origin of the former motto is embarassing. The origin of the latter was from the creed of the founding Missionaries that would go on to unite men and non-humans to form TurtleShroom.

Why was/is the motto important?
The former motto is a testimony to conservatism and reactionary thought, both of which factor heavily in TurtleShroomian politics and society. It states, and teaches, that progressive change in a society is not normally neccesary. Learning from one's past and adapting from previous precedent is far better than driving off the cliff, because clamoring "DO SOMETHING" or "every other country does it" spells the hedonistic death of democratic nations.

The latter, which is centuries older, is the founding creed and "mission statement" that the human missionaries founded their proselytizing colony on.

Is the motto official or unofficial? How did it achieve that status? - Both mottoes are considered official by law, custom, and statute.

Are there other mottoes which complement or compete with the primary motto in the public consciousness? - See above.

Have there been other mottoes in the past? When and why were they replaced?
See above. "The Future Is In the Past" was adopted in 2012 AD.

What is your nation's motto? Is it different from what's on your nation page? Why?
The motto of Atmovia is "Läbi võitluse, me elame ja me õitsevad."

If applicable, translate/transliterate the motto: into English if it's in a different language, back to the original if it's pre-translated.
It translates as "through the fight, we live and we bloom/blossom"

Where did the motto come from? Who said/wrote it, and in what context?
The current Head Minister, Kaja Õismaa, said it during her fight to become leader of Atmovia against the previous, very oppressive leader.

Why was/is the motto important?
The Motto became something that the people truly believed in, that they could fight, and though Atmovia was "wilting" under the oppressive rule of the Dictator, Evald Põhi, that there was the opportunity to fight it, and that they would come out of it blossoming anew, in a new era of Atmovian history, where life would be better for everyone and their country could be saved. Alongside the main "Motto" there was other "slogans" the protest and such used, and it was not uncommon to see such phrases as "We are growing", "We will not wilt" and "The rain is coming" (in reference to plants needing rain to grow and blossom).

Is the motto official or unofficial? How did it achieve that status?

It started off as an unofficial motto during the protests and fight for Kaja Õismaa to lead the nation, once the fight was won, and Kaja took up position as head minister, the motto simply stuck as the nations motto.

How does the government relate to it? How do the people?
See above. The motto began as a phrase that gave hope to the people during a hard time, and then stuck, the people and the government view it as a message that will forever be one of victory, and of hope, that they fought and lived, that they brought themselves back from a wilting flower into a beautiful blossom, and that they will continue to grow and fight hardships that come their way.

Are there other mottoes which complement or compete with the primary motto in the public consciousness?
See above. During the protests, there were many motto's that were inspired by the main motto.

Have there been other mottoes in the past? When and why were they replaced?
Yes, during the dictatorships of the Põhi family, the motto was "One Nation Ruled By Power", a rather narcissistic motto highlighting the supposed power of the Põhi family, the motto was almost immediately replaced following Kaja Õismaa's rise to being Head Minister of Atmovia, for obvious reasons, she believed that a motto that encompassed the people's spirit, rather than that of just it's leader, was needed, she did not however expect her previous phrase and motto of the protests to become the nations official motto, however.

Kinbu sa trali ritsa yupanren. Half a heart bears (pumps) no blood. It is a call to boldness, commitment, and pursuit of excellence for the good of the Nation.

It is an ancient proverb from the Tsōrago Sumārelupe, a collection of spiritual texts of the Fatarago religion that originated in ancient Maizan.

It is unofficial, but it is a line in (though not the name of) the official National Anthem. It is also the official motto of The 1st Infantry Division of the Army.

The current national motto of Aikoland is Trois États, Une Impératice, which is French for 'Three States, One Empress'. As the motto does change based on the gender of the sovereign, it can also be Trois États, Un Empereur (Three States, One Emperor), which was most recently used during the 1975 - 1992 reign of Emperor Édouard IV.

The motto's meaning is fairly self-explanatory: the Empire of Aikoland consists of three states, all of which are ruled over by a sole monarch. (Of course, we're a constitutional monarchy, so the monarch doesn't really do any actual governing anymore, that's all left to the Prime Minister and Parliament these days)

The motto was adopted with the 1810 Constitution, which also changed our nation's name to the Empire of Aikoland, and established King Auguste II as Emperor Auguste II. Barring two brief periods from 1812 until 1815 and again from 1940 until 1945, it has remained in use for over 200 years.

Prior to 1810, the national motto of Aikoland was 'Trois États, Un Roi/Trois États, Une Reine' (Three States, One King/Three States, One Queen', which was used following the 1719 incorporation of the Kingdoms of Aiko, Boullién, and Saun into the Kingdom of Aikoland under King Christian III.

The Achaean Republic's national motto is "Escogidos por la Fé" (English: Chosen by Faith). The motto was chosen in 1850 by President Eugenio María de Vilella and approved by the antebellum Congress of the Republic, its words inspired by the Declaration of Achaean Independence from Spain in 1789:

"Y nosotros, escogidos por la fé que nos brinda la certeza de nuestro amado Señor y la Virgen de la Candelaria, podremos luchar contra el invasor español y recuperar la lealtad a nuestra tierra."

"And we, chosen by faith that offers us the certainty of our beloved Lord Jesus Christ and the Virgin of Candelaria, we will fight against the Spanish invader and restore loyalty to our land."

Originally, the motto was "Fides Nos Elegit" in Latin, but this was changed to Spanish in 1989 in commemoration of the Achaean Bicentennial.

As a curious detail, the word "Fé" in the motto is accented as a conservation of tradition despite the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language declaring in 1959 that monosyllable words should not be accented unless they are distinguished in their use.

“Our land is our body, our water is our blood”
There are numerous conflicting stories as to where the motto originates. It is known that it is from an anonymous poem. Some sources claim that it was written as a patriotic poem of determination in the face of the Circassian genocide in the 19th century, but it is also believed to date back to the days of the Byzantine Empire. It is the unofficial motto, but it was adopted by the people during the War in Bykhia in the early 1990s. Previous Bykh mottos were whatever motto the ruling nation had. For example, during the Russian Empire, it was "For Faith, for the Tsar and the Motherland. God is with us!"; during the Soviet era, it was "Workers of the world, Unite!"

Prior to the Persian Gulf War, Iraq's motto was "Unity, Freedom, Socialism". However, in an effort to boost the country's Islamic credentials and generate support from the Muslim community, the government changed it in 1991 to "Allahu Akbar", or "God is the Greatest".

It serves as a sort of poetic declaration both within the nation and to any outside forces that would seek to disrupt it – this is our nation, our land, our heritage, and we are here to stay.
It's Linavian, not Linaviarian

"the lin-guist appears" - Ainslie

The motto of the Alliance, "For the Greater Freedoms of the Galaxy!", was established by the first President of the Alliance, Anthony Muñoz. It was actually created as a last-minute choice and not initially intended to be permanent, but it stuck.

What is your nation's motto? Is it different from what's on your nation page? Why?

"Diversitas Noster Fortitudinem"

If applicable, translate/transliterate the motto: into English if it's in a different language, back to the original if it's pre-translated.

"Diversity is the our strenght"

Where did the motto come from? Who said/wrote it, and in what context?

From Diversity Pride (it's considered an evolved version of LGBTQ+ Pride, thatinclude all humankind, and express the pride of own differencies that make a person diverse from another peoples), the banner became popualr in the net, and 6 years ago, this became the official motto of the Confederation.

Why was/is the motto important?

Because capture the essence of the our nation, the our anchestor was the European colonist escaped from religiuos or political persecution, liberated or escaped slaves from Africa and America, Mensheviks from Russia, Jews or political oppositors to nazifascism from Italy and Germany, and other migrants arrived successfully. The mixed marriages are estremely common in Alinghi.

Is the motto official or unofficial? How did it achieve that status?

Official, it was putted in the Confederal Constitution, and in the our official stem

How does the government relate to it? How do the people?

It was insered in the Confederal Stem, and the people of Alinghi seem to take as own this motto

Are there other mottoes which complement or compete with the primary motto in the public consciousness?

Have there been other mottoes in the past? When and why were they replaced?

Unoffical was Mayority is the minority. Official was One Democracy, One Confederation, Many Peoples.
