Animated flags

Postby Aleator » Fri Nov 29, 2019 4:23 am

Good day.

I previously had a flag that was removed due to being "too fast" for the site. Given the introduction of season 2 cards, I wanted to improve the quality of the image while not breaking the rules. However, it seems like NationStates doesn't tolerate animations with delays between frames. Is that assumption correct, or am I doing something wrong? I've tried both GIF and PNG formats, and neither worked for me. The old epilepsy-inducing GIF still works fine. I would appreciate some help from people who are more familiar with image processing or how animated images function here in general. Thank you in advance.

Link your image here, I'll try to figure it out. You might have went over the technical limitations like the pixel dimensions or the size of the file itself.

Not as far as I'm aware. And this is the original.

Sorry for the intrusion, but the image you linked has dimensions of 118x71.

GIF flags have to fit within 107x71 to work.

(And also be under 50 kilobytes, but your GIF is 2.5 kilobytes so that's not an issue)

Not a problem at all. Gandoor is correct, the dimensions should be 107x71. Resize it accordingly as your file size is within the limits. These were the two main things that I originally had suspected to be the culprit behind it.

For future reference;

Thank you! You saved me.

I somehow overlooked the spoiler for "technical details". Thank you very much!

That doesn't explain why the original GIF works though...

Perhaps it has too many frames per second? It could be that it's not a technical issue but rather a visual courtesy to other users and (maybe) those with epilepsy?

As you say, that was not a technical issue. It was a moderation issue. We appreciate the cooperation of players who have a potentially troublesome flag.

I am not debating the decision with regard to the previous version of the flag (and I do apologise for uploading it). What I find strange is that the previous GIF would be animated after the upload despite its dimensions being larger than the ones allowed for animated flags. I find it strange that an image of the same dimensions would still be animated with a frame delay of 0 and not animated with a frame delay >0.1s. Perhaps there is an error with the algorithm that runs those checks server-side.

Incidentally, Aleator, flashing horizontal high contrast stripes with the illusion of movement, are pretty much as high as you can get on the list of probable triggers for photosensitive epilepsy.

Maybe consider changing it? I suggest reducing the colour change frequency to less than once every half second, and you should be safe for epileptics.
