Socionics is a personality typology system created by economist/sociologist/psychologist Aušra Augustinavičiūtė in the 1970s and 1980s and further developed by Aleksandr Bukalov, Gregory Reinin, and Victor Gulenko.¹² It is based on the ideas of psychiatrist/psychoanalyst Carl Jung and psychiatrist/philosopher Antoni Kępiński.¹³⁴
In socionics, each person has 8 information elements.¹ They are:
- Pragmatism / Extraverted Logic (Rational)¹
- Logic / Introverted Logic (Rational)¹
- Emotions / Extraverted Ethics (Rational)¹
- Relations / Introverted Ethics (Rational)¹
- Force / Extraverted Senses (Irrational)¹
- Senses / Introverted Senses (Irrational)¹
- Ideas / Extraverted Intuition (Irrational)¹
- Time / Introverted Intuition (Irrational)¹
The elements are organized into 8 functions, with 1D/2D/3D/4D denoting the dimensionality (“strength”) of the elements in the functions, with 4D being the strongest.¹ These functions are:
1. Leading (4D, Mental, Valued, Accepting)¹
2. Creative (3D, Mental, Valued, Producing)¹
3. Role (2D, Mental, Unvalued, Accepting)¹
4. Vulnerable (1D, Mental, Unvalued, Producing)¹
5. Suggestive (1D, Vital, Valued, Accepting)¹
6. Mobilizing (2D, Vital, Valued, Producing)¹
7. Ignoring (3D, Vital, Unvalued, Accepting)¹
8. Demonstrative (4D, Vital, Unvalued, Producing)¹
Here’s how it’s set up:
- If your rational elements are accepting, your irrational elements are producing, and vice versa.
- If your extraverted elements are 2D and 4D, your introverted elements are 3D and 1D, and vice versa.
- If you are, say, a Logical type, your 3D and 4D rational elements will both be logic, and your 1D and 2D rational elements will both be Ethics. The same goes for Ethical, Sensing, and Intuitive types.
This is probably a bit confusing, so as an example, here’s one type, the Intuitive Logical Introvert (ILI):
